a.f.k.’s Lucky Star
April 11, 2007 at 9:36 pm under anime, impressionI’m not gonna say much more on Lucky Star. But I wanted to say a few things about a.f.k.’s version of Lucky Star. This version made better sense and looks like a.f.k. did a good job on the sub. I congratulate them. Hopefully, they will continue the series despite the criticism of the show so far.
Also how is this series so hated by some many of the anime blogging community? I will agree that it is not the best series ever but I don’t find it to be the worst. Of course, I could be totally wrong in a few more episodes. Time will tell.

Rising expectations and J-curve.

Several Possibilities:
1. Bandwagon, it’s apparently makes you look cool should you hate something popular.
2. Many Bloggers deciding simultaneously to set themselves apart from the crowd and bash KyoAni in order to make themselves look more critical than other bloggers. Ironically instead of setting themselves apart from the crowd, they BECOME the crowd.
3. They have no sense of humor, or least they only like visual humor such as fanservice and whatnot.

@mikemil828: Not sure I would agree with those. But they seem like logical possibilities.

Well, I’m not a blogger, but I’m one of what is, I suspect, a rapidly increasing number of people wanting thirty-nine and a half minutes of their life back after seeing the first episode. I reserved judgment and waited for afk’s version of the show despite reading lots of scathing comments. I really wanted to like this show as I have lots of admiration for kyoani, but ten minutes in of utter tedium listening to a seemingly endless unfunny conversation about ice-cream cones et. al. of the sort you’d only expect to hear from a group of hardened glue-sniffers on their last handful of braincells left me with my jaw on the deck. How could something as poor as this come out of kyoani’s studios? I don’t have the answer, except to maybe suggest that they’ve been working way too hard and really should be taking a holiday. There was for me the briefest flash of humour near the end with the response to the ‘how much do you get paid?’ question, but it felt utterly out of place compared to the boring dross which preceeded it.
I must have watched a couple of hundred animes over the last few years, but I’d have difficulty finding one as boring as this amongst them.

I just realized I said ‘thirty-nine and a half minutes’. Of course I meant 23 and a half minutes. Just goes to show how much that show traumatized me….

I think the blog reaction is the show failing to meet expectations more than being bad. Compared to previous KyoAni work, the first episode is underwhelming. Losing the audience expectation factor can be bad, but is sometimes inevitable. So, basically, overhype. I’m glad I read all the negative reactions before watching it, because then it was almost certain to meet my (tempered) expectations.
April 12th, 2007 at 3:46 am
I didn’t really hate it.
It’s rather boring and quite targeted at shallow and lonely otaku.
While I can see Hinano finding it a bad series, well, I certainly have to say, it isn’t as bad as, say, TSUKIHIME THE ANIMATED SERIES? (Sorrehs, TYPE-MOON fanboy acting up.)
Well, at least SOMEONE’S subbing it… … …
Unlike StrikerS, where the subbers are either dropping it due to loli content (yesy, yes they suck, they did the same thing with Demonbane.), or waiting for better raws (Triad, lazy britches.)
April 12th, 2007 at 9:02 am
@Seth: You are right it was not really that it was bad but that it did meet expectations of people. I guess you can’t please everyone.
@DrmChsr0: Tsukihime was not that bad of a series. Fate/stay night was a much better series. Sorry I just so happen to be one of those TYPE-MOON fanboys although I’m not a rabid fanboy.

What would people be saying if Lucky Star wasn’t made by kyoani? Would there be this much attention? Probably not. But then there’s also the question of how kyoani’s success with Haruhi affected the making of Lucky Star–would it have had the same type of op?
April 12th, 2007 at 7:16 pm
@DS: Perhaps not.

i personally thought the first episode was pretty good, not having read the manga before. but then again im into very odd humor, including certain stuff that’s just drawn out over time. i’ll admid though, i definitely could not take a whole anime series of drawn out conversations.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:23 am
If you like characters just having silly conversations like we all do in real life, than Lucky Star works, as it did for me. We’ve all had conversations about how to eat certain foods, but I guess people did not expect something like that in an anime, or rather something so… slow.
And the hypemachine did a great job in also provoking such a strong negative reaction. I’d like to think bloggers learned a valuable lesson in not solely focusing on the hype, but I don’t know. :/

I like the show so far, I would urge people to watch it with an open mind and expect nothing from it. I don’t think it’s s comedy at all, Bleach has more laugh out loud moments. But Lucky Star is a really fun slice of life show (a genre I have never really liked before). It’s a bit wacky and strange and maybe thats why it appeals to me. Also Konata is made of cup cakes and win. Oh and wait for the a.f.k version, it’s superior to the others I have seen, especially for a show which relies heavily on the dialogue.

The reason there are so many haters is simple, people were expecting something on the level FMP or Haruhi and there were huge expectations for LS. It simply didn’t meet them.
Poor pacing, huge blocks of unfunny moments, some dull characters (Miyuki and Cousin Yui) and far to much self references.
KyoAni is good but here they just went on cruise control.
Maybe with some new characters being injected it will pick up but right now it’s been horribly mediocre.
June 28th, 2007 at 9:28 pm
Well, now this is a bit awkward… I’d never heard any of the hype, or the criticism, or really anything, I just stumbled across it on Stage6. And I really truly like it. The slow, drawn out, building absurdity of the conversations actually appealed to me as a nice change from everything else I’ve seen in comedy anime.

A lot of avid Azumanga Daioh fans think it’s just a cheap copy.
But I really do like Lucky Star, and I like the ‘life’ and lovable character aspects that AD had. The fact that the main character is a gamer makes it even better!
July 8th, 2007 at 4:10 am
@Popo
You honestly think Miyuki and Cousin Yui are dull characters?
July 10th, 2007 at 2:54 pm
Well, the first episode was dull but I don’t think Lucky Star was that bad. There was some very funny scenes in there too, like the Initial D spoof. Almost all anime had some dull moments, even Haruhi. Just don’t expect too much or you’ll just disappoint yourself. Being critical isn’t bad but being too critical can be stressful. Just because it was made by KyoAni doesn’t mean that it has to be great. Why not watch it for fun.

I personally love this series. And boo hoo to all the people out there who don’t appreciate it for what it is.
I love people stuff. Like Lost in Translation and Grave of the Firefly and other things that aren’t big and flashy and sometimes confusing but always about the people in it.
I’ve never read the manga so I can’t say how it compares, but personally I adore all the old references to mangas and animes no one watches anymore. Come on, did no one laugh their butt off at the karaoke of DBZ? Or all the Full Metal Panic stuff? I’m just waiting for the Sailor Moon reference somewhere or Card Captor Sakura - icing on the cake.
I admit, I’m a lot more openminded about the anime I watch than most, but the culture experience and relationship between not only the girls, but the little end segment characters just really makes me laugh.

u Know its kinda funny peopole who says i want 23 and a half minute back of my life means
they watched the whole episode
anyway i like lucky star and i really want the episodes
to continue

I remember watching the first episode, and like a lot of you have already said- it really did blow holes. I think that you’d have to wait a few more episodes before you start really enjoying it. After all, a whole episode with only 4 characters saying the same thing to each other is really quite boring, and character development is non-existant. And if you think that it’s 23 an a half minutes of your life wasted, remember how many other animes you’ve watched. Now it turns into hundreds of hours wasted
September 27th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
In all honesty I enjoyed the anime. It had a more mellow tone to it, and though it didn’t have some brash overactive girl who could seriously rip apart space-time I still managed to enjoy it. Honestly, the first episode wasn’t going to grip you in suspense but the series so far had a somewhat subtle humor to it. Each character seemed relatively well fleshed out over the series barring the newer characters who made appearances from around episodes 15-20. I only watched Haruhi after I watched Lucky Star, and they had very different types of humor. You do see a lot of chest size humor mentioned in Lucky Star but you won’t see Konata suddenly groping Kagami from behind. In the end I think they both have their respective humors. Those of you who felt it was a waste of time… it wasn’t since you found out you didn’t like that kind of show, and that is technically progress. Those of you who did manage to enjoy the show, found something new to enjoy.
I would recommend Lucky Star to those who don’t mind small chit chat humor. It’s largely nonsensical topics they cover but it is generally light hearted comedy that just covers everyday life.
