Sony's Hirai: Third Party Devs Should Take Advantage of PS3's Features
In an interview with Japanese site ITMedia +DGames, Sony president Kaz Hirai acknowledge the financial necessity for third party developers to make games for multiple platforms, but suggested they should take advantage of the PS3's special abilities.
During the interview, translated by Develop, Hirai says that making the most of a particular platform gives a game "extra flavour." For example, on the PS3:
[y]ou've got the Sixaxis controller, or you could utilise the extra capacity provided by Blu-ray to add more levels, put on interviews with the developers or have your videos able to play in 1080p. I think it's really important that we talk with third party developers so that they can have these interesting extras in the PlayStation 3 version.

I thought he said Blu-Ray was needed for games this gen, now after making a console without any consideration for ease of use from a dev's point of view, he wants them to go out of there way to fill the discs full of crap like interviews and such just to justify it's use of Blu-Ray.
What happened to 4D? and what happened to the console selling exclusives like Lair (4.5 out of 10)
"You shouldn't play Lair. Not unless you have some morbid interest in experiencing what is quite possibly one of the worst control schemes ever devised"
http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/action/lair/review.html?mode=gsreview
or Heavenly Sword (7.0 out of 10)
"You'll quickly find that you're fighting the same battles time and time again, and that there isn't much variety in what you need to do"
If Blu-Ray extra space is so important why can you reportedly finish HS in as little as six hours even with the repetitive nature of the gameplay?
Sony should stop blaming the dev's, it's the PS3 that's failed to deliver.

Just a thought: the reason developers don't want to use the Sixaxis for anything is that the idea of a tilt-function controller was tried and rejected on the PC over a decade ago. Just about everyone knows better by now. No one was crazy enough to want to play TIE Fighter with a Gravis Tilt, and now no one's crazy enough to want to play Lair with the SixAxis motion control.
(Well, from the sounds of it no one's crazy enough to play Lair period, but you get the idea.)

Please please consider Sony. We understand that it's not financially viable to do make games for PS3 so go ahead and just port Xbox & PC titles across to PS3 but just make sure to fill up the slow fat bluray media so that we have something to waffle about. Who needs quality games when we have hype-o-stuffed hyper-bluray drives and hyper-rootkit-DRM-advertisingSpyware systems and the 4th dimmensional Cell supercomputing hype-o-processors! with increadible PC destroying** memory of a whole 256MB on board!!!
**Sony Disclaimer: PS3 has more memory than typical Windows 95 PC's shipping in 1997 with an average of only 128Mb of main memory. Sony excludes any ability to upgrade.

How about he starts with convincing 3rd parties to actually RELEASE SOME SOFTWARE... and then take it from there?

Where are developers going to find the time to add extra features like commentary and interviews? Movies can do this because there is time between the theatrical release and the DVD release to add extra content. It is very difficult to do this unless you are making a heavily funded game like Halo 3.

Let me get this straight developers should put extra content on PS3 games so they can sell them to who? The same customers who in ten months couldn't get a single million seller despite a crap load of bundle tie ins? Kaz has been smoking that same shit that made him think giant crab bosses reflect Jap. culture! Good luck with that considering that the 12 million 360 users still maintain a 5 game ratio to 4 million PS3's at 2-3 games per console. Yeah and I hear LAIR is great(Bullshit), Heavonly Sword is eye opening to what the PS3 can do(suck out loud), and Killzone 2 will out sell Halo 3 (not likely). Blueray has done absolutely nothing for gaming considering three of the so called AAA titles are under 6 hours long! I'm sorry but paying my $600 console $10 an hour is crap.

I don't usually watch the extra features on DVDs to begin with. How about just adding some extra levels, weapons, etc. But... wait... if they're going to record all that extra stuff and put it on blu-ray disks to utilize the extra space, couldn't they do the same for the X360 and add all that extra stuff to a second dvd? Unless Sony is going to throw in some extra dollars to keep the extra content PS3 exclusive, why should any dev/publisher care about giving the PS3 the edge when there are so many X360 gamers out there and the X360 is also cheaper? That's a waste of resources if you're simply trying to pull one person from one console to the other as opposed to giving gamers a reason to pickup the game regardless of the console/s they own. C'mon Sony, show me the money.
I'm not even surprised that Lair sucks. I could see it coming from a mile away. It reminded me of Brute Force for the XBX and we all know how that game turned out. Both games received lots of hype, both games sucked badly.
Initially people expected they PS3 to easily crush the X360. Then is the idea that 1st gen PS3 games look good compared to 2nd gen X360 games. However, it seemed as though some people didn't realize that while games improve on the PS3, they'll also keep improving on the X360. This year is the year for the X360. I don't know what's in store for next year, but if MSFT can match this year or top it, then that's bad news for Sony. Hopefully MGS4 and FF XIII will do the trick. That's all it seems to boil down to. Gran Turismo 5 looks great, but Forza 2 also looks great and if PGR4 looks anything like those trailers then I'm definitely getting that.
Anyway, back to Geometry Wars. I didn't know what all the hype was about until I actually saw and played the game. This is addicting. Seeing as I have limited funds right now, XBLA is working out great.

Wow!!!
Its a XBOX fanboy party!!!!
Sony SuXXXs, Gran Turismo 5 Looks like crap, every racing game on Xbox looks better, and play better. Halo3 looks worse than Bioshock but some how it looks better than Killzone2.
How long until we get a Halo party game?? Why is it taking this long? Come on MS!!!
Halo tennis, Halo bowling, Halo racing, you know learn something from Nintendo, have no shame about milking a franchise.
We need more Halo so that the boat wont sink too fast. I feel like we are running out of time, just now that I started to enjoy my Xbox, most likely will be replaced in two years and abandoned just like the last one... Soooo Sad.

I didn't know the xbox fanboy convention was in town :)

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed...

I do think it is the developers who fault the PS3 is not doing as well. If developers would start supporting PS3 as much as they do Xbox360, then more people would buy it then more games could be sold. All PS3 needs are the big franchises to finally come out and another price drop.

We can only see real data after the holidays. All Halo fans will buy Halo, all Gran Turismo's will buy it, the same for MGS4 and FFXIII.
My guess is that Xbox will be overshadowed this holiday and Wii will most likely make a killing with PS3 hot on its heel.
Mark my words, almost everybody who would buy a Xbox just because of Halo, did already. Yes, Halo will break all sales records and will be the fastest selling game ever, maybe even the best selling ever, I have no doubt of that, and if you ever played you know it deserves it, its great fun and very few FPS play that well on a console.
But MS is betting all on Halo and we all know how it ended last time. Again YES! Bioshock is great, Too Human looks good, am I missing any other shooter??? Do you see what I am hinting at?? SHOOTERS and more SHOOTERS... Please give me some Final Fantasy, I dont care if they have to pay for it, just steal it from Sony!! That would be a move to shake the industry, and a slap on Sony's face. As it is, the Xbox looks more and more like my PC, I can get almost all the same big titles on it. And since I am in my second always freezing X.R.I.P.360 I just wonder why, beside Halo3 I need it for...
BTW, I still don't own a PS3, just too expansive right now, when it comes down in price ($400) I will take the plunge.
Also I think the Wii is still no cheap enough for a machine that only plays mini games, and GameCube ports for now...

Marcelo are you smoking rock? "Shooters and more shooters" Have you forgot all the RPGs on the 360? Theres lost odyessy, blue dragon, eternal sonata, oblivion, two worlds, mass effect and ect vs. what a game that won't be out until late 08. PS3 fanboys like you fail to realize that your favorite console doesn't have shit on it right now. Hell the best selling game on you platform is RFOM which is a FPS. God I wish close minded people like you would realize the 360 is this generations PS2. Tons of games, best multiplayer, larger instal base, and a better price point. And before you talk about blueray why are none of these HUGE games longer than 6 hours? SONY is a hype machine always have been always will be. Your just another sucker
Posted by: Dan1581 | Sep 4, 2007 11:51:55 AM
None of my friends bought the last xbox. All owned a PS2. All now have a 360 except a few still holding out for ps3 to come good. I think that's generally how it seems to be going
Posted by: John3333 | Sep 4, 2007 12:37:53 PM
@ Dan1581
So after more than 2 years out the only RPG I can play is one I got for my PC already (Oblivion) and the PS3 has and looks better and plays better and dont even get me started on the whole loading every minute thing on the Xbox...
Blue Dragon is the only one out besides Oblivion, and the average score around the net is 7 out of 10. Well since you got nothing else, I guess you would call that good.
Eternal Sonata and Lost Odyssey are not even out yet! So is that really all you can come up with???
The Xbox360 is this generation's PS2? hahahaha
If I am smoking rocks then you probably been smelling too much of the smoke coming out of your Xbox and all the peripherals MS have been puting out these days.
The Wii is already the leading Next Gen console, and it did it, in less than half of the time it took Xbox, their sales have been disappointing this whole year long, and thank God for Halo3 or it would have been the end of it.
By the middle of next year, Xbox will be second or very close to it, all analysts have predicted a PS3 victory in the long run, and I do believe that will be the case. I will not send my Xbox for repair again, when it dies, and die it will. I will just trow it in the garbage can where it belongs...
BTW, the next big thing coming from the GTA Devs is going to be exclusive to PS3, because the Xbox would not be able to handle it without a HDD and with that puny DVD storage. Say what you will about Blu-ray, but most games came on CDs in the beginning for the PS2 as well. I wonder how would the devs make a game like San Andreas or GOW 1 and 2 if they had only the space of a CD to work with... I know the MS game plan was to beat everyone to the market and they took their chances by, releasing a machine that was just a upgrade to the older one. I just can see that decision coming back to bite them in the A$$...
Peace!!

Choca-Latte:
Where do I go to buy one of these “slow fat bluray” players? Blu-ray has a maximum bitrate of 53.95 Mbit/s, compared to HD DVD at just 36.55 Mbit/s (and the 360’s measly 12x DVD drive, at only 15.9 Mbit/s…
I also find it interesting that you call the Cell a “supercomputing hype-o-processor” when it is indeed used for supercomputing, and has a peak performance of 204 GFLOPS, compared to the 360’s Xenon processor, at a meager 115.2 GLOPS.
On to your next fine specimen of the English language: “hyper-rootkit-DRM-advertisingSpyware systems”. Ever notice that the HD DVD specification requires Internet support for all players? That’s so the movie studios can track which movies you watch*… Comforting, huh?
As far as the “increadible PC destroying memory of a whole 256MB on board”, I should mention that the PS3’s RAM is much faster than the 360’s, and that memory isn’t as important as you think (the PS2 had only 32MB).
*There’s another reason besides that: HD DVDs hold so little data that you have to go online to get the bonus features that should come on the disc.

web sites:
yes or provide a commentary track.
More levels and the some (optional) sixaxis movement might give a game some extra value. I wouldn't care about the rest.
