We have to sing "Happy Birthday" to the Hotel Cipriani in Venice this year, because they're celebrating their 50th anniversary. And to celebrate they're in the middle of a three-year renovation (pity it wasn't finished for the birthday, but still).
So far they say they're nearly done with the first phase, which has involved refurbishing ten rooms and suites in the Redentore and San Giorgio wings of the hotel. They've pulled out all the stops to make these made-over rooms fancy: cashmere and silk blankets, Murano glass, Fortuny and Rubelli fabrics and some genuine Venetian artwork.
Next step in the renos is to add the technology: high definition satellite TV's going into all the rooms, along with free Internet access (we're presuming WiFi but not sure yet).
Rates for this summer (so be aware that some of these rooms will be refurbished, and some not--ask when you book) start at 870 (US$1,350) for the cheapest double with just the garden view, and 1,090 (US$1,700) if you want a lagoon view. Suites are priced up in the thousands with a 2 bedroom lagoon view from 2,420 (US$3,750). Sounds pricey but it is a great spot for Venice--and it does come with breakfast (you'd better eat your fill).
