The housekeepers ("chambermaids") want the number of rooms they're required to clean on a normal shift to drop from 14 to 13, citing reasons that are less about money and more about the sheer amount of accidents, stress and physical pain that result from a standard housekeeping shift (especially since the workload has increased as hotels have been adding more pillows and linens to rooms in recent years).
Officials had better get this figured out soon and give 'em what they want because the four affected hotels are already hurting from the strike. According to the Gazette:
The four hotels continue to operate, but some have cut services. The Hyatt has closed its pool and redirected at least 35 groups of guests to other hotels.
Yikes. Looks like this is only the beginning, too: the unions on strike at the four hotels are affiliated with the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux (which represents 5,500 employees at 41 hotels in Quebec) and a CSN spokesperson told the Gazette that "current negotiations are 'not going very well' and more locals will have strike mandates by [Monday]."
Again: tip your housekeepers! They work hard!
