It’s a delicate dance, and John McCain is ‘liable to break a hip’

Update: This post has been updated, expanded, and broken down by category.

Long-time readers know that I’ve been emphasizing John McCain’s dozens of major policy flip-flops for months now, hoping that this would a) catch on as a campaign issue; and b) undermine McCain’s unearned reputation for principled stands on the issues.

I’m beginning to think that maybe, just maybe, the criticism is taking root. Consider yesterday’s “Cafferty File” on CNN:

For those who can’t watch clips online, Jack Cafferty noted some of McCain more glaring recent reversals, adding, “If John McCain doesn’t stop changing his position on the issues, he threatens to make John Kerry look like an amateur. In order for McCain to win in November, he has to appeal to both the traditional Republican base and to Independents. Dana Milbank, in The Washington Post says that’s a delicate dance. And if McCain’s not careful, ‘he’s liable to break a hip.’ Of course, any doctor will tell you a broken hip can be very difficult to recover from.”

The past couple of weeks have been especially difficult when it comes to McCain flip-flops.

* McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.

* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.

* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.

* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)

Wait, I’m not done with the last two weeks yet….

* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.

* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.

* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”

* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.

And these come after these other reversals from April and May:

* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.

* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.

* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.

* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.

* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.

* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.

* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.

* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.

* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.

And these are the flip-flops I’ve noticed earlier:

* McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”

* McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.

* McCain says he considered and did not consider joining John Kerry’s Democratic ticket in 2004.

* In 1998, he championed raising cigarette taxes to fund programs to cut underage smoking, insisting that it would prevent illnesses and provide resources for public health programs. Now, McCain opposes a $0.61-per-pack tax increase, won’t commit to supporting a regulation bill he’s co-sponsoring, and has hired Philip Morris’ former lobbyist as his senior campaign adviser.

* McCain has changed his economic worldview on multiple occasions.

* McCain has changed his mind about a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq on multiple occasions.

* McCain is both for and against attacking Barack Obama over his former pastor at his former church.

* McCain believes Americans are both better and worse off than they were before Bush took office.

* McCain is both for and against earmarks for Arizona.

* McCain believes his endorsement from radical televangelist John Hagee was both a good and bad idea.

* McCain’s first mortgage plan was premised on the notion that homeowners facing foreclosure shouldn’t be “rewarded” for acting “irresponsibly.” His second mortgage plan took largely the opposite position.

* McCain vowed, if elected, to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term. Soon after, he decided he would no longer even try to reach that goal.

* In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.

* McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.

* McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants’ kids who graduate from high school. Now he’s against it.

* On immigration policy in general, McCain announced in February 2008 that he would vote against his own legislation.

* In 2006, McCain sponsored legislation to require grassroots lobbying coalitions to reveal their financial donors. In 2007, after receiving “feedback” on the proposal, McCain told far-right activist groups that he opposes his own measure.

* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”

* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”

* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.

* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.

* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.

* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.

* On a related note, he said 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.

* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.

* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.

* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.

* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.

* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.

* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.

* McCain decided in 2000 that he didn’t want anything to do with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, believing he “would taint the image of the ‘Straight Talk Express.'” Kissinger is now the Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.

Confronted with the inconsistencies in McCain’s record in March, the senator’s aides told the New York Times that the senator “has evolved rather than switched positions in his 25-year career.” That’s a perfectly sensible spin — when a politician holds one position, and then, for apparently political reasons, decides to embrace the polar opposite position, it’s only natural for his or her aides to say the politician’s position has “evolved.”

But in McCain’s case, the spin is wholly unfulfilling. First, McCain sells himself as a pol who never sways with the wind, and whose willingness to be consistent in the face of pressure is proof of his character. Second, Republicans have spent the last four years or so making policy reversals the single most serious political crime in presidential politics. The dreaded “flip-flop” is, according to the GOP, the latest cardinal sin for someone seeking national office.

And if we’re playing by Republican rules, McCain’s “evolutions” should be a fairly serious problem. I’m beginning to think they might be.

Gaia help me, those “evolutions” can be measured in “revolutions per minute” – next you’ll see the Weather Channel reporting high, gusty winds from all the spinning.

Jack Cafferty often embarrasses Wolf Blitzer on the Situation Room with his outbursts, particularly on Bush and the march to war, where he doesn’t toe the politically correct media line.

But the whole crew – Wolf, Jack, Jeffrey Toobin and Gloria Borgia all flubbed the test royally yesterday when discussing the drill, drill, drill insanity. Each muddled the issue, and Jack even said he didn’t know if it would do any good or not. This issue, when looked at objectively, is so one-sided it is laughable, but tragically, it appears the media is going to play it out as he said/she said political bickering.

In 2004 it was really only one sound-bite that turned Kerry into a flip-flopper. Unfortunately he handed them that sound-bite on a silver platter. God… Kerry! What an awful candidate. The less he speaks this year, the better.

The thing is, almost all of McCain’s flip-flops are on tape: YouTube has dozens of them.

When it comes to attack ads this fall, it will be easy to create 5-10 ads (and Obama will have the money to broadcast them) with different examples of McCain’s flips and flops using the same tag line.

Actually, I’m stunned and amazed at what McCain has managed to do: he’s out flip-flopped Romney, and I though that was impossible.

Me brain stupid. No read so good.

For some reason that paragraph just blended together for me – thanks for the correction. It makes more sense coming from Milbank than Cafferty anyway.

Point stands though – GOPers will ignore the flipping and the flopping and will concentrate their ire on “Democrats” making cracks about McCain’s age. (All journalists/tv pundits are “Democrats” when they criticize Republicans, as far as I can tell.)

A fantastic list — how can it be fit onto a palm card? From my reading, the single issue on which McCain is consistent is that he’s unwaveringly hostile to women (personally, including his wives) and politically — women’s health, women’s rights, women’s pay, women’s issues. He has reportedly voted against family planning programs that included money for mammograms, for example. Makes you wonder…. (among other things, what’s really driving those who claim to be Clinton supporters but will vote for him?)

No, it isn’t funny in any context. It is ugly.

Hip replacement in women is related to decreased bone density due to reduced estrogen levels. In men, it is related to obesity, prior injury, and generalizaed osteoarthritis and only weakly related to physical activity such as flip-flopping or dancing.

Would you make jokes like this about cancer or heart attack? Maybe you would.

I was dismayed by the ugliness of the primary and now I see that it is carrying on into the general election. You talk about Laura Bush showing class compared to Cindy McCain, but you wouldn’t know class if it bit you on the hip. Dems were supposed to care about women’s issues, about the elderly, about poverty and the environment. These were always core values. Now I see that they go right out the window when it comes to mocking a campaign opponent.

By the way, Laura Bush has no class. She raised a couple of useless delinquents, enabled a dry drunk to lie the American people into a war, and she has always lived high off the looting of Bushes failed enterprises and favors done to the president’s son. I wouldn’t be surprised if she publishes a tell-all about her struggle with drug addiction, after she leaves office. But you all think she’s peachy because she says one nice thing about Michelle? I said phooey and I meant phooey.

As far as the attacks on the opposing party…where have you been for the entirety of the American political process? That is how elections are conducted, since the inception of the office of President. Furthermore, it is easy to confuse ‘attacks’ with ‘WHAT AMERICANS ARE IN DIRE NEED OF KNOWING PRIOR TO CASTING THEIR BALLOT!’. McCain and the rest of the Republithug cronies need to be slapped around with as much fact-based degradation as we can muster up; they’ve done far greater to the entire country for the past 7 1/2 years. Do you really want this man running the country when he can’t even be honest about making a seemingly innocent statement that ‘he doesn’t know much about the economy’, and actually got mad when questioned about his own statement and denied it with some misguided self-righteous indignation. C’mon now America THINK ABOUT it, please. We cannot afford another someone who appears to be as totally inapt as the current president, can we?????????. PLEASE…….use your brains!!!!
WE DO NEED CHANGE.

The Ethics Committee had already criticized him for “questionable conduct” in the Keating Five saga. Why is anyone surprised at this guy’s state of mind?
His judgment is similar to that of a squirrel chomping away on a nut and darting back and forth between traffic in the middle of highway I95. Sooner or later some SPCA driver is going to nail him!
(Talk about breaking a hip? More like splat to me!).

Why don’t we see any of this in the main stream media? McCain is still getting a free pass! Obama clarifies, his position, or compromises on an issue, which he has always said is necessary – on occassion… McCain cries foul, calls him out on flip flopping. Then MSNB-FOX, will devote their whole morning show talking about Obama’s “flip flop” according to McCain( their trusted source). Is McCain a producer there, or maybe he owns stock.? Now if it were Fox, I would not be surprised at all, their favorite pass time is Obama bashing, 24/but Msnbc? McCain is THE KING OF FLIP FLOP! This information needs to be put out there the people have a right to know.. McCain should make a list of things he has not flipped on, because it would be a lot shorter, than the other way aroin
People in glass houses shouldn’t cast stones / but should pay taxes on it. Maybe they forgot because the own so many!

So — how do we get this information in the hands of the masses and not just progressive/left blogs? These are important facts that voters need to know. If we can’t rely on main stream media – what’s the strategy for getting in a broader audience?

Anybody who votes for this nut case needs their head examined. Seriously people, this guy is about as stable as a wind mill in a typhoon. One day he’s praising Hillary, calling her a compassionate individual then the very next day he exclaims rather angrily when it was brought up in an interview, “I Did Not” say that. Either he’s, like I said a nut case or senile. Either way one would have to be a supreme idiot to vote for this silly-minded man. He will say anything convenient thus the title, ‘John the Expedient McCain’. Get it??

Great list. It was time someone pointed our McCain’s change of positions on various issues. I refuse to use the word flip flop, which the media have been using for Obama, for far less changing of positions.

The only thing I did not like about the article was the comment about breaking a hip. Please let us be respectful. Ageism is as bad as racism.

Let me ask this question, which politician has never done the flip flop ? None that I know of since the 70’s since I have been watching. Either they find out facts they did not know before and flip knowing more or flip due to the polling. Someone mentioned rules, in the run for president what are the rules. And with freedom of the press, well sort of, (got to stay politically correct, ha ha) RULES, that is a joke. Now a question for you Obama supporters what does he stand for? That is other than raising taxes and so called universal health care (thats a joke, look at England and Canada that are looking for a way to get it back to the way it was). I have heard him say change, change, change but what are the changes he wants?
I am not a MaCain person and he is to liberal for me just as Bush is. I will admit I am for lower taxes and getting the Gov. out of my back pocket and almost of all aspects of my life. Stay away from my Church, Car, House and Kids and my Money. For all those Dems out there what has Gov. done right other than the military and trying to keep the roads working? Check the Constitution there is not much more that they are to do really. If you can remember those that listened in school, the Constitution is a set of rules to keep Gov. off our backs not control us, but them.
Now if everyone that reads this far will stop and think (something schools don’t teach any more) do you really want Gov. controlling your life??????

So? What you are saying is obvious to anyone following the news. Ditto on the left. But, what is so striking is the apathy exposed on the part of Democrats. You had more chances than imaginable to set impeachment motions into process.
But, what did you do? Nothing! No guts. You would have had Republicans flocking to your side to impeach that bastard. But you only whined and whimpered and stuck your tail between your legs.

But you only whined and whimpered about “Iraq” and stuck your tail between your legs. The war is not the problem, it is the blundering incompetence of George Bush that turned a remarkable victory upon the defeat of Sadam into a 7 year war and the loss of 4000 brave young Americans.
McCain is no damn good either ie: Amnesty, Free trade, and improving the economy. Imagine his gall. He went to Michigan last week to promise he would rebuild the auto industry and bring jobs back to America. For the last 8 years he has been crowing about being the free trade guy. “It’s good for America”. “The jobs are gone, they won’t be coming back” he said.
How can this fool propose to improve the economy when he 1. Advocates Amnesty for 20 to 30 million illitterate uneducated backward Mexcans. A vortex of lost jobs and income for American blacks and whites will ensue. 2. He will develop a comprehensive energy policy. Bull! 3. And as I said promote free trade. Hear thaat giant sucking sound? Perot said it 16 years ago, the sound of jobs and manufacturing fleeing the country.
If you have stayed with me this far let me ask you the $64 question. What drives innovation, research and development? The answer is simple COMPETITION. When you allow millions of poverty stricken Mexicans into the country why would you need to improve productivity? When you allow Manufacturing to leave the country and go abroad who will be doing the research and development to improve productivity and advance the competetive edge. FOREIGNERS, that’s who. What are we left with? The giant sucking sound!!!!!
