McCain New Hampshire Town Hall: Results

“In Manchester last night, there was just one reporter and one photographer waiting for McCain as his plane landed.

All three cable networks aired some of McCain's town hall meeting today in Rochester, NH. Of the three news channels, MSNBC aired the most of McCain, from 12:21-12:35pmET; FNC aired it from 12:17-12:27 and CNN took the McCain town hall from 12:22-12:26. All three aired this morning's Barack Obama news conference in Jordan.”

Of course all of the networks were busy following Obama around like dogs in heat. And of course the New York Slimes opted against publication of McCain’s article in response to Obama’s absurdity published prior. Can you say Media Bias boys and girls? I knew you could.

Brad Marston arrived in New Hampshire late Monday night to head on over to my place and start making up batches of banners and handmade signs. We all got up pretty early (actually I never went to sleep) and headed on into town (Rochester) around 6:45am. I got there the same time as Fox News. We had a quick breakfast….joked around, talked a lil’ strategy and went to work.

We brought hundreds of signs and flyers…as well as two huge four by eight signs in support of McCain. (Good thing we did, apparently the setup crew hadn’t thought of that) We set about handing out flyers, signs, stickers, pins and placing yard signs around the town. It was fun….but hot.

Any how….On to the event . . .

John McCain returned to New Hampshire today for a Town Hall meeting at the historic Rochester Opera House.

Two Democrats introduced the senator reaffirming his attention and effort to get the democratic and independent vote.

"I'm a life long democrat," said Bill Condon of Barrington. "I've never voted for a Republican and never dreamt I would."

Condon said he first saw Sen. McCain at my personal old friend Dan Steinbach’s(RIP) picnic during New Hampshire primary season. (I was there as well.) "He doesn't have a speech for New Hampshire and a different speech for Iowa. He tells people not what they want to hear, but what they need to hear. If you want to keep things happening, join me in voting for Sen. McCain," he told the crowd. Condon was right.

McCain took the stage . . . "Coming back to New Hampshire is almost like coming home," McCain said. McCain was right. It was like having a relative you’ve been waiting to see for too long finally arrive.

"He was wrong then, he's wrong now," McCain said at the town hall meeting in Rochester, N.H. . . . and McCain was right.

McCain stated that he wants to bring US troops home as well -- but only when conditions on the ground allow.

"They will come home in honor and victory," McCain said, bringing the crowd to their feet yet again. Once again . . . He was right.

John reminded the crowd that it was he and he alone that fought for and supported the “surge” in Iraq . . . stating that Obama “Would rather lose a war in order to win a campaign.” "I would hope he would have the courage to reverse his position," McCain said.

"The benefits of this success are tangible," McCain said, "And we cannot let that disappear by doing what Sen. Obama wants to do."

Sen. McCain then took questions from the crowd. Greg Muller, a disabled Iraq war veteran, told McCain that he is having a difficult time getting benefits from the VA, primarily with problems in the adjudication process as are many of our current veterans. He went on to ask if McCain would help make this easier on them when in FACT he became POTUS.

McCain told Muller that there have been recent improvements to the law, but he would like to see more opportunities for veterans to be able to see the doctors of their choice, rather than in some cases, driving a long distance to a VA hospital. McCain mentioned use of a card a veteran could take to any provider of his choice. Again, McCain was right.

McCain also talked about our goal for energy independence. "This energy crisis is a real one. It's about environment, economy and national security. I have a plan to fix this energy crisis."

McCain also recognized folks representing the One organization as well as AARP’s Divided We Fail. Two organizations McCain stated he personally holds in high regard.
McCain gave each representative the opportunity to give the crowd a ‘commercial’ of what they were all about and also answered their questions. Yep, you guessed it he was right here also.

And of course the event had the usual ‘nut.’ This ‘nut’ I actually felt bad for as she was an elderly woman that was very obviously deeply misguided and disturbed.

McCain had to silence the crowd several times to allow some of the woman’s rather absurd questions regarding the Iraq war. At one point, McCain asked the crowd, "Please, could we all be respectful of everybody's point of view?" McCain took three questions from the woman, saying he respected the fact that she came to state her views. And you know what…McCain was right.

On her third or fourth question McCain had to once again quiet the crowd, the woman asked whether the U.S. was in Iraq to steal the country's oil. McCain then told her, "In all due respect, I think that is something that is not what Americans are fighting for."

McCain showed the crowd and the woman grace, integrity, great respect and great leadership. He was right, and we were all impressed.

McCain repeatedly thanked the woman for her questions, saying, "You obviously represent the views of many Americans and I respect those views." When the exchange between the two finally came to an end (after nearly ten minutes!), McCain quipped, "It's far better, frankly, than some of the shouting that sometimes that exists between Americans." I’ll be damned . . . Right again.

At one point another woman criticized McCain’s staffers. McCain started by making a joke "A lot of my staffers are on work release programs.”

The woman then told McCain that he needed to change his staff.

“I am going to do a little straight talk here,” she said (here is a pic of her doing it!) at the Rochester, N.H., forum. “Mine is not really a question. It is a statement about a lot of your campaign staff members, and I can tell you right now I know I will be on top of their shit list but I could care less.”

"You've got two people sitting right here next to me, Sheridan Folger and Brad Marston." the woman said. "They have done more work for you volunteering than a lot of your paid staff have."

“I’m very aware that the only way campaigns succeed and the way mine has in the past is relying on volunteers,” McCain responded.

That woman was our great friend Andi Card. To an extent she was right and once again so was McCain. Andi was there first thing in the morning helping Brad and I bust out signs, gather folks up keep them motivated and just be all around great for McCain . . . yet again.

It was a great event. McCain was on top of his game. It was good to see him again.

I did manage to get him a copy of my dear Vietnam veteran friend Dan Mayhak’s CD/Video and a letter from another Vietnam veteran friend Bill Cray’s ten year old daughter. I assure you John enjoyed them both immensely.

Why Jesse Jackson Hates Obama

A few weeks ago, the Rev. Jesse Jackson made something of a fool of himself. There he was -- a historical figure in his own right -- threatening the castration of Barack Obama. It was sad to see.

If I have often criticized Mr. Jackson, I have also, reservedly, admired him. He is a late 20th century outcropping of a profoundly American archetype: the self-invented man who comes from nothing and, out of sheer force of personality, imposes himself on the American consciousness. If he never reached the greatness to which he aspired, he nevertheless did honor to the enduring American tradition of bold and unapologetic opportunism.

But now -- not looking old so much as a bit lost within the new Obama aura -- it is clear that Jesse Jackson has come to a kind of dÃ©nouement. Some force that once buoyed him up now seems spent.

Mr. Jackson was always a challenger. He confronted American institutions (especially wealthy corporations) with the shame of America's racist past and demanded redress. He could have taken up the mantle of the early Martin Luther King (he famously smeared himself with the great man's blood after King was shot), and argued for equality out of a faith in the imagination and drive of his own people. Instead -- and tragically -- he and the entire civil rights establishment pursued equality through the manipulation of white guilt.

Their faith was in the easy moral leverage over white America that the civil rights victories of the 1960s had suddenly bestowed on them. So Mr. Jackson and his generation of black leaders made keeping whites "on the hook" the most sacred article of the post-'60s black identity.

They ushered in an extortionist era of civil rights, in which they said to American institutions: Your shame must now become our advantage. To argue differently -- that black development, for example, might be a more enduring road to black equality -- took whites "off the hook" and was therefore an unpardonable heresy. For this generation, an Uncle Tom was not a black who betrayed his race; it was a black who betrayed the group's bounty of moral leverage over whites. And now comes Mr. Obama, who became the first viable black presidential candidate precisely by giving up his moral leverage over whites.

Mr. Obama's great political ingenuity was very simple: to trade moral leverage for gratitude. Give up moral leverage over whites, refuse to shame them with America's racist past, and the gratitude they show you will constitute a new form of black power. They will love you for the faith you show in them.

So it is not hard to see why Mr. Jackson might have experienced Mr. Obama's emergence as something of a stiletto in the heart. Mr. Obama is a white "race card" -- moral leverage that whites can use against the moral leverage black leaders have wielded against them for decades. He is the nullification of Jesse Jackson -- the anti-Jackson.

And Mr. Obama is so successful at winning gratitude from whites precisely because Mr. Jackson was so successful at inflaming and exploiting white guilt. Mr. Jackson must now see his own oblivion in the very features of Mr. Obama's face. Thus the on-camera threat of castration, followed by the little jab of his fist as if to deliver a stiletto of his own.

And then Mr. Obama took it further by going to the NAACP with a message of black responsibility -- this after his speech on the need for black fathers to take responsibility for the children they sire. "Talking down to black people," Mr. Jackson mumbled.

Normally, "black responsibility" is a forbidden phrase for a black leader -- not because blacks reject responsibility, but because even the idea of black responsibility weakens moral leverage over whites. When Mr. Obama uses this language, whites of course are thankful. Black leaders seethe.

Nevertheless, Mr. Obama's sacrifice of black leverage has given him a chance to actually become the president. He has captured the devotion of millions of whites in ways that black leveragers never could. And the great masses of blacks -- blacks outside today's sclerotic black leadership -- see this very clearly. Until Mr. Obama, any black with a message of black responsibility would be called a "black conservative" and thereby marginalized. After Obama's NAACP speech, blacks flooded into the hotel lobby thanking him for "reminding" them of their responsibility.

Thomas Sowell, among many others, has articulated the power of individual responsibility as an antidote to black poverty for over 40 years. Black thinkers as far back as Frederick Douglas and Booker T. Washington have done the same. Why then, all of a sudden, are blacks willing to openly embrace this truth -- and in the full knowledge that it will weaken their leverage with whites?

I think the answer is that Mr. Obama potentially offers them something far more profound than mere moral leverage. If only symbolically, he offers nothing less than an end to black inferiority. This has been an insidious spiritual torment for blacks because reality itself keeps mockingly proving the original lie. Barack Obama in the Oval Office -- a black man governing a largely white nation -- would offer blacks an undreamed-of spiritual solace far more meaningful than the petty self-importance to be gained from moral leverage.

But white Americans have also been tormented by their stigmatization as moral inferiors, as racists. An Obama presidency would give them considerable moral leverage against this stigma.

So it has to be acknowledged that, on the level of cultural and historical symbolism, an Obama presidency might nudge the culture forward a bit -- presuming of course that he would be at least a competent president. (A less-than-competent black president would likely be a step backwards.) It would be a good thing were blacks to be more open to the power of individual responsibility. And it would surely help us all if whites were less cowed by the political correctness on black issues that protects their racial innocence at the expense of the very principles that made America great. We Americans are hungry for such a cultural shift.

This, no doubt, is what Barack Obama means by "change." He promises to reconfigure our exhausted cultural arrangement.

But here lies his essential contradiction: His campaign is more cultural than political. He sells himself more as a cultural breakthrough than as a candidate for office. To be a projection screen for the cultural aspirations of both blacks and whites one must be an invisible man politically. Real world politics, in their mundanity, interrupt cultural projections. And so Mr. Obama's political invisibility -- a charm that can only derive from a lack of deep political convictions -- may well serve his cultural appeal, but it also makes him something of a political mess.

Already he has flip-flopped on campaign financing, wire-tapping, gun control, faith-based initiatives, and the terms of withdrawal from Iraq. Those enamored of his cultural potential may say these reversals are an indication of thoughtfulness, or even open-mindedness. But could it be that this is a man who trusted so much in his cultural appeal that the struggles of principle and conscience never seemed quite real to him? His flip-flops belie an almost existential callowness toward principle, as if the very idea of permanent truth is passÃ©, a form of bad taste.

John McCain is simply a man of considerable character, poor guy. He is utterly bereft of cultural cachet. Against an animating message of cultural "change," he is retrogression itself. Worse, Mr. Obama's trick is to take politics off the table by moving so politically close to his opponent that only culture is left to separate them. And, unencumbered as he is by deep attachment to principle, he can be both far-left and center-right. He can steal much of Mr. McCain's territory.

Mr. Obama has already won a cultural mandate to the American presidency. And politically, he is now essentially in a contest with himself. His challenge is not Mr. McCain; it is the establishment of his own patriotism, trustworthiness and gravitas. He has to channel a little Colin Powell, and he no doubt hopes his trip to the Middle East and Europe will reflect him back to America with something of Mr. Powell's stature. He wants even Middle America to feel comfortable as the mantle they bestow on him settles upon his shoulders.

City gives DNC host committee pass on gas tax

The committee hosting the Democratic National Convention is using the city's gas pumps to fill up on fuel, avoiding state and federal highway taxes, officials said today.

"There's something there that just doesn't seem right to me because, in a sense, you're saying then that the officials who pass the laws are not willing to live by them, and that concerns me," Councilwoman Jeanne Faatz said.

The issue came up during the council's weekly meeting with Mayor John Hickenlooper when the Public Works Department requested authorization to be reimbursed by the Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee for use of "fueling facilities, fuel and car washes."

"By doing it this way, by running it through our Fleet Maintenance, that means that that fuel does not pay state or federal highway taxes," Faatz said.

Christine Downs, a public works spokeswoman, said the host committee is not paying the city's locked-in fuel rate but one that's based on the weekly cost of gas. Downs was unable to provide council members an example.

Downs said the contract with the host committee started in March and that $9,700 had been expended so far. The city anticipates making $466,125 total from the contract, she said.

Faatz asked if it was customary to have "fleets for dignitaries" not pay for highway taxes if they're using government fuel facilities.

Hickenlooper said it was.

"I believe this is only for elected officials, government dignitaries," Hickenlooper told Faatz.

"My understanding is in Washington or wherever where this happens on a regular basis, that it's standard operating procedure. I do know for a fact that they're doing the same exact thing in Minneapolis," which is hosting the Republican National Convention, the mayor said.

"Hummmmm," Faatz said.

After the meeting, Faatz said that just because both host committees are doing it "doesn't necessarily make it right."

"I am just troubled by not having the payment of taxes for what I consider to be a privately funded party, and that's what the host committee is: it's a private organization," she said.

"The DNC is not government. The RNC is not government," Faatz added. "They are political parties and they are putting on a huge party, and that is not providing services to each and every citizen each day."

A host committee spokesman did not immediately return a phone call.
