I really think that the "Life Skills" section is imperative! I feel that life skills are sometimes ignored and they are so important to have.

My child is gifted in many areas and contrary to popular belief, it doesn't make life any grander!
It may make things a little more challenging and interesting though!
Trying to make excuses for and brand new definitions for your 3 yr old reading the tabloids in grocery lines is not an easy task!
I am so happy that this site addresses our issues also. All kids are special and all kids learn in different ways; sometimes it really is the gifted children who get overlooked because the rationalization is "OH, he/she is goina make it just fine"...
Yes, they will. As long as they have love, guidance and the opportunity to be stimulated intellectually.

By Blogger mannequin, at 6/28/2008 7:49 PM

I like that it's broken up by ages/grade.

Bot the "Is my child on track" and "Learning personalities" articles were very interesting and helpful. You want to steer clear of comparing your child to others but you definitely want to know if he/she needs extra help.

By Blogger Sandy, at 6/30/2008 2:11 PM

I like that you can research your child's school.

By Blogger Susan, at 7/01/2008 4:29 AM

I'm a teacher AND a mom, so lets see here...the magazine articles are nice. My husband is a tutor so the Adventures in Tutor is enlightening. I like the articles about cooking and stamp collecting to help parents see the educational value in "everyday" activities. What I would like to see is a checklist/form that parents could access in order to generate guides to help make the most of activities like that. Such as selecting "trip to the zoo" "age 2-6", and some printable sheet would result that would tell little extra things to do (note the large size of the elephant; ask child to try to walk like an elephant with you!) and facts (elephants eat 70 pounds of hay each day! That is like TWO of you!) to make a family zoo trip like a field trip.
There could be similar sheets for things like planting seeds, baking a cake, painting a picture, etc.

By Blogger CanCan, at 7/01/2008 5:03 AM

My 5 yr old son has autism, and we are always looking for new toys that will engage and teach him useful play skills. I thought the special needs section was right on target with a good variety of toys that might appeal to a broad range of special kids. These toys look like they have a long life and would be good to pass on to friends!

By Anonymous cathy54321@hotmail.com, at 7/01/2008 6:00 AM

i was just reading about the studies done with children in daycare. that the average daycare kids were more likely to act up and have tantrums while those at better quality daycares the children were respectful and made friends easier. i guess it does matter what child care facility you use.

What a great site! I bookmarked it. We are a home educating family and I am always looking for new ideas.

By Blogger Heather, at 7/03/2008 2:06 PM

Really good site! I'm a teacher and I will definitely be going back. This year I have a challenge because I'll be out of the regular classroom and in a Resource Room, where I'll be working with students from 1-7 grade. The breakdowns for each grade - with imformation about Academics, Social, and Emotional "benchmarks" will be great for helping me to understand the range in ages I'll be working with. I also like the "Easy ways to incorporate math learning at home this summer" ideas. Thanks so much!
