Man I have been wanting something like this for us Reason-heads ever since my first iPhone. Reason Compact gets 2 new cross-compatible instruments, and so does Reason 10.4! This means we can finally start ideas on our phones and iPads, and then open them in Reason later. Just did a quick test and all works as expected. I am stoked. 😎

So glad for this one! Over the last few years, the more and more features that have been added to Reason seem to have bogged it down a bit. For some it is worse than others. Today they just released a performance update for VST (and RE) and Reason in general. I had a few recent projects that were giving me the old "Computer is too slow to playback song" error. That seems to be a non-issue as I am opening these previous projects and playing thru/looping them without a pop click or error message. Reason 10.3 appears to use MUCH LESS DSP. Let me know if it changed anything for you and your system. Did for me! 👍

UPDATE - Sep. 13, 2018: Reason 10.2 will have "Multi-Lane" editing in the sequencer. This will soon be a feature in Reason!

I finally figured it out. Ghost channels in Reason. Why should those FL Studio cats have all the fun? This is perfect for something like tuning your 808 sub to the key/progression of your track, or writing a melody off a chord progression you started.

Here is the best way in Reason that I have figured out how to do this.

1. The clip you are tuning TO goes UNDER the clip you are tuning.

2. Clip that you are tuning (ON TOP) must be muted.

That's it! Unmute your clip and delete the original reference clip when you are finished.

Tip: Works best with sequencer STOPPED, as the reference clip is the unmuted one! You WILL be able to hear the muted blue notes you are editing, IF you have "trigger notes while editing" checked in preferences.

I admit it's not quite as nice as FL ghost notes, but it is the fastest and easiest way that I have found so far in Reason. I hope that helps! Spread the word and share the knowledge!

That was fast! Reason 8.3 dropped today and with their new update system I had .3 going in a couple minutes. (autoupdate FTW!) Standout features in this release:

Detached rack window can now have a separate browser panel.

Adds convolution mode to RV7000 reverb.

Zoom to Selection function (for zooming in on selected clips or notes.)

Buttons for setting MIDI focus to a device directly from the rack.

Convolution in RV7000 is a most welcome addition. Setting MIDI focus from rack is a long-requested feature that I am very glad to see. Zoom to selection is nice too, but next time i hear "zoom" announced in an update I want it to be for devices! I'm greedy like that. ;) There are many more fixes and tweaks in Reason 8.3, Check out the links to propellerhead listed below.

This is a really great technique for diving in to a new (or old) synth and really raising up your understanding of it, quickly. It also helps you to learn general synthesis techniques. The idea is very simple. Make a beat or song, using only one synth. Yes, for the drums too. ;) (OK so the drums probably won't be the best they can be, but that's cool... it's the practice of "learning by using" that matters here. Go as far as you can get!

I believe that learning things by immersion really does work. IMO there is no better way to learn the ins and outs of a synth than immersing yourself in it, and there is no better way to immerse yourself in a synth than using only that synth to (try) and make a song.

I've gotten <del>pretty good</del>... <del>fairly decent</del>... completely average at this by now.

Here are 3 examples, using rack extensions:

One synth Song | Parsec

One Synth Song | Antidote

One Synth Song | Viking

Easy to do

You already have what you need. Pick a synth and go. Thor, one of the RE below, any of the vast number of VST's available..

Great for a 30 day trial...

It seems I do this without thinking now. Every time I get a new RE or synth it seems that I go right back to this exercise. Try this the next time you demo or trial or buy a synth.

So what do you guys think? Do you ever practice this method? Leave a link in the comments and share!

I have quite a few Rack Extensions by now so I thought I should post on my favorite ones in an ongoing segment called "RE Must-Haves". This is not a paid endorsement or aynthing like that. These are just some of the new RE for Reason that I think are: useful, indispensable or just plain bitchin'. My own personal favorites I guess you'd say.

First up is Selig's stuff . To put it simply, these have become like "indespensible mixing utilities" to me, so I figure it will be easy to write about them. :)

Selig Gain

This one is the most "tool-like" of the three IMO. Very practical handling of gain, among other things. Put simply, it gives you much more control over your gain staging in Reason. Bonus: this device gives control over the pan laws too.

Selig Leveler

I tend to use this most on vocals...probably because those are always my most wildly fluctuating tracks, with regards to the levels. I use it just like the directions on the rear panel say: calibrate first, set target and then let it do it's business.

Selig DeEsser

Another one mostly for vocals, obviously. Pretty straightforward here, de-ess with no stress. I think it has to be the easiest and most effecient de-ess plug i have ever used. To have the sibilance completely separated from the signal is an awesome thing.

★★★★★

That's it for my first short and simple review. Selig Audio creates very practical and smart Rack Extensions and now that I have them, I really can't imagine mixing in Reason without them. This is why I've opened this segment with them, and they are 5 out of 5 for me. Read more about their features on the individual product pages, and try them for yourself.

I love the kick. Not so fond of the snare...but upon researching, I see that there is an easy fix that sounds great, so I'll do that later. ;) Right away, I reached for Reason to send some MIDI-out to the Volca. I grabbed a Redrum, but this box has some weird default note numbers (or maybe redrum does) so I just pulled up a Tick Tick Step Sequencer and quickly scanned, labeled and adjusted to taste. With the patch saved, I can now quickly pull that up whenever I want to run Reason MIDI out the Volca.

I thought I'd share the patches I made for it, for any other Reason-using, TickTick-owning, VolcaBeats-havin' fools like me out there. There are two patches, same setup. One is [TickTick - Empty .repatch] and the other [TickTick - Test Pattern .repatch]

I love the Roland Tr-808.

Who doesn't? The kick, the snare, the clap... even the rimshot. So when I saw a small, D.I.Y. 808 BD Clone circuit, I jumped on it! This was a fairly easy build. I found the perfect case: small and sloped with a 2x9v battery cradle. Once I had all the parts it only took about a day to put them together.

Some might say that this project is not for beginners because the PCB is very small, but I did OK and I am definitely a beginner!

jmej @ Tindie says "This is a near exact clone of the famous kick drum from the classic tr-808 drum machine. The only changes are for facilitating the common mods (extended decay and a pitch pot), and a slightly more flexible trigger input."

I'm a fool for the branding, huh? This case has: the power switch, led indicator, Frequency, Tone, Decay and, the pushbutton, in a nice -008' logo configuration. Custom Kloom. Branded Boom. Yeah, I'm a nerd.

LINKS AND INFO

PCB was $25. Parts were about $15. After that, all you need is a case. This unit also works at +/-12v or +/-15v and most people are building them for their analog modular rack systems. Jesse at Anesthetic Audio:
