Nokia Ovi Orion Gaming Phone, New N-Gage (Video in Youtube) - There were a few Nokia fans who regretted the canning of the N-Gage gaming phone series, but there is still hope for this idea, specially if you believe in concepts. The folks of Recombu created the Nokia Ovi Orion, a gaming phone design, pictured above.

okia Ovi Orion looks like a combo between a Palm Pre and an iPhone, with a strange QWERTY keyboard and a hidden one line display at the back. This bizarre design might make gaming more user-friendly, but what’s really important is the front multitouch capacitive touchscreen, with a huge diagonal, hopefully.

We wouldn’t be surprised if a Tegra or Snapdragon CPU was on board too, as well as HDMI out and a decent bunch of speakers. The question is: does Nokia have the software platform for such a device? Here’s a short video demo of the concept gaming phone.

Microsoft offers first Google Android mobile phone app

Google and Microsoft are fierce rivals in the handset market

Microsoft has made an application that works with Google's Android phone.

Called Tag, the free software uses a handset's camera to turn it into a mobile barcode reader.

It is the first application Microsoft has made for the Android operating system - one of the key rivals to Windows Mobile.

Android is among the last to get the Tag application which is available on Windows phones, the iPhone, Blackberry and Symbian handsets.

Using Tag and similar programs, barcodes can become coupons that link people to websites, pass on information or give visitors a discount in an online store.

Releasing the application for Android continues Microsoft's program of making software for rival phone firm. In December 2008 it produced its first iPhone app, called Seadragon, and followed it up in early 2009 by releasing Tag for the Apple handset.

Apple has the most mature mobile apps store. In early January, Apple said more than three billion applications had been downloaded from its store.

Microsoft's launch is made against a background of greater co-operation among operators on phone software.

In February, 24 of the worlds largest mobile network phone operators banded together to create the Wholesale Applications Community. This will try to make it easy for application developers to make and sell phone applications.

It is widely seen as a move by operators to wrest control of the lucrative apps market away from software firms and phone makers.

Microsoft recently unveiled a revamp of its mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7 Series, which will be publicly launched later in 2010.

Masamichi Hayashi, a marine ecologist and educator, has created a few life-like robotic fish from various recycled items. The toy fish have been produced from all kinds of recycled objects including raincoats, used tires, plastic bottles and windscreen wipers.

Masamichi Hayashi's great knowledge in both robotics and sea animals has helped him create a realistic set of robot fish. The robots fish closely imitate the swimming styles of the species from which they are modelled.

Google Nexus One vs iPhone 3GS

13 January 2010 – The Google Nexus was just launched a few days ago at CES 2010. Physically, the device has dimensions similar to that of the Apple iPhone. However, the Google Nexus runs on version 2.1 of the Android OS while the iPhone runs on the Apple OS.

The main difference in the hardware is the 5.0 megapixel camera in the Nexus whereas the iPhone only has a 3.0 megapixel camera. On the software side, the applications available to the iPhone outnumber the applications available to the Android device. And the Nexus has been the subject of numerous complaints about its functionality, although that will doubtless change eventually.

However, the point here is that the Google phone is sold unlocked with the operator sales package as an afterthought, whereas the iPhone is sold on an operator package and it is only with great difficulty that you can obtain an unlocked iPhone.

I would venture to say that for now, the Nexus will play second fiddle to the iPhone, but this could change quickly if the open-source community starts to write numerous programs for the Nexus. This in turn depends on how both companies engage with the multitude of developers that write programs for both platforms.

The Google Nexus One runs on Google Android 2.1, is 11.5mm thick, comes with 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, and a 1 GHz microprocessor. The phone will support HSPA 900/1700/2100 and a 3.7 inch WVGA AMOLED display.

The phone has four illuminated soft keys primarily for Back, Menu, Home and Search. A tri-colour LED will be used in the device for notifications and charge status. Haptic feedback is to be included in the phone. Other features are the A-GPS, Accelerometer, Light sensor and a proximity sensor along with a Digital Compass, Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack and active noise cancellation. The camera is 5 megapixels with mechanical AF and LED flash and will be capable of using the A-GPS for geo-tagging shots.

If a phone can get away with looking like a dummy phone, it's art. Let's see. You wouldn't want to touch the LG Crystal. At least a couple of minutes you'll just sit back and admire. OK, you'll eventually start exploring it and the question will slowly emerge.

What kind of keyboard do you put on a full-touch phone? Well the answer is simple - a touchpad. The LG Crystal keypad is not a real keypad, but a transparent touchpad instead. And it's not there as a typing commodity, it's there for the coolness of it. How sick is that you may ask? Well, we don't really know but we're infected.

We are previewing a pre-production unit here but it's the most final design that LG currently have and happily matches the latest official photos, so the exterior will most likely stay the same in the final retail version.

If you've followed the Crystal as closely as we have, you will know that back in the day when it was first displayed to the public it had a strikingly different blue front panel gradient that later on silently disappeared. We guess them focus groups are more fond of uniform gray than gradient blue.
