About the Artist: Nshira

Daniel Akortia signs his paintings as Nshira, which means blessing.

He is a native Ghanaian and was born in 1979. After finishing secondary school in 1998, Daniel attended Art College for three years, pursuing drawing, painting, textile design and graphic design.

In his own words "I live in a world of my own, and therefore refuse to be drawn from real life. I concentrate on drawing my personal visions."

Many of Nshira's paintings can be found in private homes and collections, art galleries in Ghana. He also exhibits his work at national and international art fairs.

Daniel says "My aim is to depict the history and culture of Africa as it really is, in the true colors of nature. After completing college, I have spent all my time painting. I mainly use bright colors, and my paintings are often like decorative patterns of abstract expression."

1. Ignore everybody.
2. The idea doesn’t have to be big. It just has to be yours.
3. Put the hours in.
4. If your biz plan depends on you suddenly being “discovered” by some big shot, your plan will probably fail.
5. You are responsible for your own experience.
6. Everyone is born creative; everyone is given a box of crayons in kindergarten.
7. Keep your day job.

Lips pursed, trying to decide what to say, what they should do.
It's not a ready-made attitude, that fullness you see.
These Lips stay closed more often than not. Please believe.
Holding in teeth and tongue, thoughts ready to be made vocal, and set free.
Yet I heard it's a gift to be a lady with lips like these.

My journey is filled with decisions I must make
Chances I must take
And For my mothers sake
I often revisit my childhood
One filled with religion and full of hope
She tried every tactic in the good book
But prayer is no match for the streets,
At least it wasn't for me
I tried to do right, I meant to be there
To make up for my own father not being there
But life isn't fair, As if they actually care
I was sought out by the man,
It's like they dragged me by my hair
Come with me and be my slave
A slave to the environment that we put you in
An environment that you can't escape
And when we're done with you,
We'll brainwash another
So is there really hope for the next young brother?

Chicago south side Gallery Guichard has everything that an art lover or collector could want. Housed in the historic Bronzeville neighborhood is this building that illuminates the block of 35th and Martin Luther King Dr. Artist and founder, Andre Guichard helps to fuel this structure’s aura and has been running the gallery along with his wife since it started in 2005. Guichard features his work as well as 35 other artists of the African Diaspora.

I visited the gallery in March 2010 and was drawn to this particular acrylic on canvas painting Ancient Nature by artist Nathan Jalani Taylor.

Artwork includes sculpture and paintings that range from $200 to $20,000 dollars, so there is something creative for everyone. Gallery Guichard has many events, special offers, and hundreds of featured works of art at various times in the gallery and on the gallery website.

I was recently honored to have my work featured at Gallery Guichard as part of the Bombay Saphire Artisan Series.

Assata: Exile since 1979
On May 2 1973, Black Panther activist Assata Shakur (JoAnne Chesimard) was pulled over by the New Jersey State Police, shot twice and then charged with murder of a police officer.

Assata spent six and a half years in prison under brutal circumstances before escaping out of the maximum security wing of the Clinton Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey in 1979.

Due to government persecution in her own country, Assata moved that same year to Cuba where she now lives in exile.

Thankfully, she still writes and is able to share her expression with the world.

Wilfredo Lam is one of my favorite artists of all time. This Cuban-born French painter was born in 1902 when there were still new techniques of art to be discovered. Lam sought to portray his strong Afro-Cuban culture.

He has inspired some of the most renowned artists of the twentieth century, including Pablo Picasso. Lam combined his African and Cuban influences to create a unique style using hybrid figures. Amidst a forest of sugarcane and bamboo, Wilfredo Lam has painted beautifully masked figures in vibrant colors.

I love Lam's use of form and color to create such vibrant, unique works of art. MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art has more information about this beautiful, eclectic and historic painting.
