Having fun with your marital arts. After you have put many hours in training and learning the basics of your marital art, you should begin to flow with all the different entries and counters that you have learned.

Here’s a great example of flowing at about 50% speed and notice how one partner does not counter any of the entries. This allows the aggressor to practice and flow from one set of moves into another.

All of these can be countered but that would upset the flow and require a higher level of practicing. This is a excellent training video to copy for practicing Kali marital arts.

Here’s a example of how many of the arm locks that are taught in Kali, Kuntaw and Silat will look in action. Now you can see what would happen if you followed through with many of these techniques.

Practice Tips: I usually play these videos and learn these locks one at a time. Since we already know all these locks we general try to get as close to the movie trailer as possible while having a bit of fun with it.

By adding extra moves and blending even more of these techniques together you will learn how to flow from one move to the next using your opponents energy. What a great way to train. Also the MADummy allows me to do full knee and elbow strikes which is something we can not do in training with a partner.

These are simple moves that can be breaking down and learned one at a time.

Martial arts videos have flooded the internet and become very popular for new students trying to learn everything they can about there area of interest. I have folders and libraries of video on my computer broken down into specif areas of my training. One folder might be for “Kali sticks” or “Kali stick disarms” and so on.

You can also do the same thing for any classes or seminars you might be taking. Because of the flood of information you might be presented with in two or three hours, you will want to make some notes of what you have learned. I usually take mental notes while I’m in class and then I write it down. By doing this I can go back and review it on paper while remembering it and visulizing it until I have it ingrained in my mind.

This works, and it is worth practicing. As your learning something new just tape it in your mind, then run it back on the way home and try to remember as much as you can about what you learned. Then make sure to write it down.

The worst thing you can do is come out of class and change gears by turning the radio on in your car and start thinking about something else. If your practicing in Kali, “Think Kali” it’s that simple.

So my next step is to get everything out of my brain and on to paper or my computer and just write it down as you remember what you learned. You don’t have to organize it, just get it on paper.

Here’s some notes I took from just one of my classes, now these notes might only make sense to me buts that’s who there for. Sometimes because of class size you might have a rare chance to learn at a excellent ed pace, the amount of information your instructors are giving you can be overwhelming. Just go with it, relax and learn don’t let one negative thought come into your brain. “Learn, Learn, Learn”

Here’s what my notes for one class look’s like:

******************************************

Remove – Control – Counter – Reset

(Sticks) Check with hand, block with stick, strike wth stick then change drill
or continue with drill. (Instead of chambering stick – come with a spear)
Notes: look for avaible strikes always

Put in as many strikes a possible while working the drill and keeping
the flow of the drill at the same time.

Use a strike to give them something to think about, while
your changing their base. Works with all triangles.

Use the Table Leg Therory – Alway use good solid stance!
To change there stance – create a unstable side by removing (changing) a table leg.
Works with Triangles,
1) Distract with punch ( anything)
2) Change triangle
3)

Use a strike to distract them.

When platted low with three (points) legs – look for a leg to take out
and change the base.
*********************************************
Put both hands together and hold them out, have someone push sideways.
Kuntaw goes from long range to inside range

DO DRILLS – WHAT DO YOU GOT!
Do a ONE-for-ONE drill,
1) Start a drill
2) let parnter counter
3) keep drill going
4) let parnter counter
Notes: look for avaible strikes always

Triangle Therory -
1) Shoulders to waiste,
2) – Both feet to waste.

Take Down Notes: wrap leg around the neck while locking up the arms in a
branch up or branch down arm lock

When attempting a low take down – stay low and in close with good base with your back leg bent but grounded.
lean forward with your shoulders wrapping your stick or arms low on the legs for take down. (Use forearms
just like the stick take down drill.) Remember all things are the same stick or no stick.

Sticks- Zokettee thrust goes around the sheild
Do all stick excerises let handed if possible
*****************************************************
Pulling the Train
Example ; Follow thru your opponent with a strike setting you up for the next strike.
Use that momentuim into your next strike

When doing forms keep this in mind.
*****************************************************

Forms_
1) – Use Single Sticks, double sticks and knives with forms. Free flow as
long as it stays within the form – Its your form when done with sticks and knives.
Use common sense strikes.

2) Have your parnter use the straight punch to start the form – go thru the form controlling
and moving forward.

1 – 3 Annoy Forms are Stepping Back
4 – 6 Forms are going forward.

On 1 – 3 forms at the end of the form suffle back
and change sides – do other side- do w/sticks & knives
*************************************************************

This is a simple system but it works.

Training in Kali and Kuntaw for the street I would never want to be locked up on the ground, but you never know when that could happen. So I have incorporated these BJJ locks into my training. Knowing when and how to take advantage of a lock when the opportunity is there, could be the difference between you walking away unharmed or not.

Practing martial arts take downs after your on the ground can be practiced over and over again until the counter is second nature and fast and efficient. I have been devolping training dummies to help with areas where I want to use full contact and full force.

This video is just a demo of how the ground drill works. Up to speed I would be slaming into my opponent and twisting at the same time for a quick and easy take down. Of course you would incorporate your followup moves to finish the submission or what ever your goals are.

I have found that being able to strike full force and move fast in this training is giving me a built in response for the rest of the drills we use such as a “High Line Take Down”.

Play the video to the end.

Being over fifty you have to throttle your training. This setup lets me train at my own pace allowing me to train using my own judgment for when to slow down or stop.

Being consistent of keeping my guard up even when the drill is over. I set up a safe zone three feet outside of the dummy perimeter or training partner. This way I keep my hands up when ever I get inside of the 3 feet circle.

Use entry points and start a drill and then improvise using everything I can think of to finish a drill.

The video below will show a basic set of drills that are improvised just after the entry point.
