Synopsis:

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. Part twisted entertainment, part government intimidation tactic, the Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she’s ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 12 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 157 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

Ireland will very soon be getting its first IMAX theatre, we’ll also very soon be witness to Disneys sci-fi adventure John Carter. Which as luck would have it is in IMAX. Coincidence? With that in mind Disney have released  a brand new poster for the movie pimping the IMAX 3D version.

Based on Edgar Rice Burrough’s Barsoom series of novels, the movie sees Wolverine star Taylor Kitsch in the title role as a Civil War soldier who wakes to find himself on Mars in the midst of another bloody battle.

The movie marks Pixar director Andrew Stanton’s first foray into live action, working off a script from Michael Chabon. If this can live up to Stanton’s extraordinary Wall-E then we are in for a treat.

John Carter will be released in Ireland and the US on March 9th, 2012.

Synopsis:

Will Shaw (Henry Cavill) goes to Spain for a weeklong sailing vacation with his family but his whole world turns upside down when the family is kidnapped by intelligence agents hell-bent on recovering a mysterious briefcase and Will suddenly finds himself on the run.

The 84th Oscar nominations are here and surprisingly there’s no nomination for Michael Fassbender’s outstanding performance in Shame. There’s a number of other inexplicable descisions, including Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy missing out on a Best Picture nod despite 9 films being included in the short-list. Ireland does get 2 nominations in Best Short (Live Action) with Peter McDonald’s Pentecost and Terry George’s The Shore which keeps up our strong tradition of at least 1 nomination for each of the past 3 years.

Martin Scorsese’s Hugo leads the pack with 11 nominations, closely followed by The Artist with 10 and Moneyball with 6. David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is one of the major losers with only 5 nominations, but it did nab a Best Actress nod for Rooney Mara. Drive missed out in all the main categories and Spielberg was left off the Best Director list. Tilda Swinton and Charlize Theron should also feel slighted for missing out, for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Young Adult respectively.

The Oscars ceremony takes place on Sunday, February 26 at the Kodak Theatre with Billy Crystal returning to helm the show

Synopsis:1944. World War II rages and the fate of the free world hangs in the balance. Meanwhile the black pilots of the experimental Tuskegee training program are courageously waging two wars at once — one against enemies overseas, and the other against discrimination within the military and back home. Everyones favourite action hero, the one-man-army that is Jason Statham is back in explosive new thriller Safe. If you don’t believe me just check out the new poster for the film. He means business…

The movie sees Statham as a former cop turned cage fighter, who happens to witness the attempted abduction of a little girl on the New York subway. Steeping in as only the Stath can he soon finds himself in the middle of a turf-war between Russian mobsters, Chinese Triads and corrupt police officiers all of whom want the information that the little girl knows.

It’s all a little Mercury Rising but the director Boaz Yakin is an old pro having given us the superlative Remember The Titans. That coupled with the fact that Jason Staham beating the crap out of 3 different kinds of enemies is just pure awesome and we may be on to a winner here.

Safe is released in Ireland May 11th.

Sony Pictures has released the synopsis for their Colin Farrell starring reboot/remake/reimaging of Paul Verhoeven’s 1990 Arnie starring sci-fi actioner Total Recall. And despite claims to the contrary the plot sounds exactly like the original.

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world – Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

In addition to Farrell the film stars Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston, John Cho and Bill Nighy. The film comes from Live Free or Die Hard director Len Wiseman, but don’t let that deter you…Farrell has a pretty good rep with sci-fiers.

Total recall is out in Ireland August 22nd. We should be seeing a lot more of this very soon.

Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.

Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the “Transformers” franchise), along with Scott Stuber (“Couples Retreat”), Sarah Aubrey (“The Kingdom”) and Duncan Henderson (“Master and Commander”).

The battle for Earth begins at sea.
