Six Nations 2026 - Rivalries Renewed, Stories Rewritten

Six Nations 2026: A Championship Steeped in History, Set Ablaze Again

Few sporting tournaments stir the soul quite like the Rugby Six Nations. Every winter, as the cold air settles over Europe, stadiums from Dublin to Rome crackle with anticipation. The Six Nations is more than a championship - it’s history, rivalry, identity, and passion wrapped into five unforgettable rounds. As we look ahead to 2026, the excitement is building once again, fuelled by tradition and the promise of fresh drama.

A Championship Born of Rivalry

The origins of the Six Nations stretch back to 1883, when the Home Nations Championship was first contested by England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. From the very beginning, rugby was more than a game, it was a matter of pride. Battles for the Calcutta Cup, the Triple Crown, and later the Grand Slam forged rivalries that still burn today.

France joined in 1910, adding flair, unpredictability, and a continental edge that transformed the competition into the Five Nations. Nearly a century later, in 2000, Italy’s inclusion completed the modern Six Nations, broadening the tournament’s reach and reinforcing its status as rugby’s most prestigious annual competition.

Across generations, legends have been made in Six Nations matches - Gareth Edwards dancing through defences, Brian O’Driscoll announcing himself on debut in Paris, Jonny Wilkinson’s icy precision, and more recently, new stars carrying their nations forward. Every era leaves its mark, yet the heartbeat of the tournament remains unchanged.

Why the Six Nations Feels Different

What sets the Six Nations apart is its intimacy and intensity. There are no pool stages and no second chances. Every match matters. A single mistake can derail a title challenge; one inspired performance can echo through history.

The atmosphere is unmatched: packed stadiums, national anthems sung with raw emotion, and supporters who carry decades of hope and heartbreak into every fixture. Whether it’s a rain-soaked slugfest in Cardiff, a tactical chess match at Twickenham, or a fast-paced spectacle in Paris, the Six Nations consistently delivers rugby at its most compelling.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Six Nations

The 2026 Six Nations promises to be another thrilling chapter in this storied competition. With northern hemisphere rugby continuing to evolve, the tournament feels as open and competitive as ever.

Traditional powers will arrive hungry. Champions will be hunted, challengers emboldened. Younger players who’ve been blooded over recent seasons will step fully into leadership roles, while experienced internationals chase one last shot at silverware and glory.

Tactically, the game continues to balance power with pace. Expect ferocious breakdown contests, ambitious attacking rugby, and defensive systems pushed to their limits. Fine margins will once again decide outcomes - a missed kick, a turnover won, a moment of brilliance under pressure.

Rivalries Renewed, Stories Rewritten

Every Six Nations carries its own narratives, and 2026 will be no different. Old rivalries will be renewed, but new storylines will emerge.

Can a Grand Slam dream survive the pressure of the final rounds?

Will an underdog rise to stun the giants?

Who will claim bragging rights that last a lifetime?

These questions are what make the Six Nations irresistible. It is rugby stripped to its essence - nation versus nation, history versus ambition.

The Spirit of the Game

At its core, the Six Nations is a celebration of rugby’s values: respect, resilience, and community. From grassroots clubs to packed international stadiums, the tournament inspires players and supporters alike. It reminds us why we fell in love with the game in the first place.

For Centurion Rugby supporters, and anyone who lives for the sport, the 2026 Six Nations offers another chance to be part of something special. Another winter of shared moments, unforgettable matches, and stories that will be retold for years to come.

The countdown has begun. History awaits - and once again, the Six Nations will deliver.

Centurion Rugby: Gearing Up for the Return of The Ashes

It's not often that rugby league gets to revive something so steeped in history, so rich in rivalry, and so packed with promise. But that's exactly what's happening this Autumn, as the Ashes return to England in Rugby League for the first time since 2003. And for us at Centurion Rugby, it's more than just marking time, it's about stepping up, delivering excellence behind the scenes, and helping England be ready in every possible way. Here's what we're excited about, what we're doing, and what's at stake.

What's the Ashes 2025?

Some of the headline facts:

The ABK Beer Ashes Series is a three-Test match series between England and Australia (the Kangaroos).

It's being held over three Saturdays in London, Liverpool, and Leeds:

Wembley Stadium – Saturday 25 October

Hill Dickinson Stadium (Bramley-Moore Dock), Liverpool – Saturday 1 November

Headingley, Leeds – Saturday 8 November

All matches kick off at 2:30pm GMT.

The Ashes are returning after a 22-year hiatus. The last time this series was played was back in 2003.

From Centurion Rugby's Point of View: Preparing the Equipment, Supporting the Players

As a training equipment supplier, our role isn't front page, but it's essential. Here's how we're gearing up.

Gear to Withstand Test Series Intensity
Test matches demand the highest standards, and so does training for it: training pads, bags, agility gear that endure frequent, intense use. We've been stress-testing gear, increasing durability, ensuring nothing fails when players need it most.

Training Camps & Conditioning
England's squad will spend more time preparing physically and tactically for Australia's pace, power, and style. That means we're supporting them with a range of our tackle shields and tackle bags so they can train with the same intensity of a game scenario.

Innovation & Player Safety
One of our biggest concerns is safety. Tackling force, collisions, fatigue - all multiply in a high-stakes series. We're investing in gear design that helps mitigate injury risk, ensuring protective equipment is up to spec, and ensuring training drills mimic match conditions safely.

Challenges & What England (and Centurion) Must Overcome

We don't underestimate what's ahead. Some of the hurdles:

Australia's dominance: They've won the last 13 Ashes series since 1970. England will have to close a big historical gap.

Match sharpness & intensity: Domestic leagues and Super League provide strong competition, but a Test series is different in stakes, tempo, physicality. England will need to ensure their conditioning, depth, and game understanding are up to it.

Injuries and player availability: Through a long season, fatigue and injuries accumulate. Ensuring that players recover well and are fit is crucial.

Handling pressure: Wembley under the arch, big crowds, national expectation, media attention, these tend to magnify mistakes and test temperament. Preparation must include mental resilience, not just physical and tactical readiness.

What We at Centurion Are Excited to Deliver

Making sure every training session counts. We believe in zero-waste training time; that means the right gear, ready when needed, durable, and consistent.

Seeing players push themselves in practices where the margins matter: fast play, precision, tackling under fatigue.

Being part of a support ecosystem that often doesn't get the spotlight — the gear, the grounds, the drills - but which, when done right, lets talent shine.

Contributing to England getting that Ashes win. We believe the team has grown a lot in recent seasons. With the right preparation — physical, technical, mental — the gap can be closed.

The Final Charge to Old Trafford: 2025 Grand Final Preview

This October, the rugby league world converges on Manchester as the 2025 Betfred Super League Grand Final arrives. In what promises to be a spectacle of grit, skill, and legacy, four teams will battle head to head in the semi-finals for the right to lift the trophy at Old Trafford. The stage is set. The stakes are high. Let's dive into what to expect.

When & Where

Date & Kick-off: The Grand Final is scheduled for 11 October 2025, with a 6 pm (GMT) kick-off.

Venue: The match returns to Old Trafford, which will continue to host the Grand Final under contract at least through to 2027.

Teams & Form

While the final match-ups haven't been set just yet, one thing is clear: the contenders are sharpening claws.

Wigan Warriors enter as defending champions and bookmakers' favourites. Currently, Betfred list them at 1/1 for the Grand Final.

Hull KR remain in strong position after a high-quality season and are 13/8 in the odds to break through.

St Helens and Leigh Leopards have each shown flashes of brilliance and resilience through the season—and the play-offs. They are valued at 7/1 and 15/2 respectively. Leigh, in particular, would make history if they reach and win the final, given they are yet to appear in one.

Key Players & Storylines to Watch

Jai Field (Wigan): He's having a season for the ages—24 tries, 21 assists—and is on the shortlist for the Man of Steel award.

Building a dynasty vs. forging history: Wigan are aiming for a three-peat; Hull KR want to add to their silverware; Leigh could be on the verge of a breakthrough; and St Helens are never to be counted out.

Tactical chess in defence: In finals, defence often wins more than attack. Expect tight edges, strategic kicking, and pressure moments.

Mental pressure & composure: Handling the big occasion is as much about mindset as it is about physical form. Which teams can rise to the moment?

Predictions & What It Means

Favourite to win: Wigan are the safe bet - consistently strong, battle-tested, and backed by the odds.

Dark horse potential: If Leigh or St Helens get to the final, they have the underdog narrative and momentum.

Legacy on the line: A win for Wigan would push them towards dynasty status. For Hull KR or Leigh, it would be transformative.

Closing Thoughts

The 2025 Grand Final is shaping up to be an absolute cracker. Whether you're backing the favourites or hoping for an underdog story, one thing's for certain: Old Trafford will be electric on 11 October. The question isn't just who will win - it's who will seize the moment when it matters most.

Will Wigan cement their dynasty? Can Hull KR finally break through? Or will we witness a shock result that rewrites the narrative? Whatever happens, it's going to be a night to remember. 🏉

Your Essential Guide to the Women's Rugby World Cup 2025

Here's everything you need to know about what's shaping up to be the biggest women's rugby tournament we've ever seen:

When & Where: 22 August – 27 September 2025, right here in England. We're talking matches across eight cities from Sunderland to London – this isn't just a tournament, it's a nationwide celebration.

The Teams: 16 nations battling it out, including some brilliant newcomers like Brazil alongside the usual suspects. England kicks things off against the USA at Sunderland's Stadium of Light on 22 August – what a way to start!

The Final: 27 September at Twickenham, and it's already sold out. All 82,000 seats gone. That tells you everything about where women's rugby is right now.

England's Squad: 32 players packed with experience and hungry for success. With Emily Scarratt chasing history and captain Zoe Aldcroft leading the charge, this team means business. Their recent record speaks for itself – 50 wins in 51 matches is just ridiculous.

But let's not forget the Black Ferns. New Zealand won't give up their crown without a fight.

Why This Matters to All of Us at Centurion

It's about dreams becoming reality: When young players step onto our pitches, they're not just playing for fun anymore (though that's still important!). They're chasing dreams that now include realistic pathways to international rugby and World Cup glory.

The pathway is clearer than ever: WXV, Pacific Four, regional competitions – there's now a proper ladder from grassroots through to the elite level. Players can see exactly where their hard work might take them.

Community connection: This World Cup isn't just happening to us – it's happening with us. Fan zones are popping up everywhere, from Sunderland to London. It's the perfect opportunity for clubs like to bring people together, host watch parties, and maybe run some skills sessions while we're at it.

The Final Word

This Women's Rugby World Cup isn't just another tournament – it's a statement. Women's rugby has arrived, and it's here to stay. Let's get behind the Red Roses, celebrate the sport we love, and use this incredible momentum to drive our club forward.

G'day Centurion Rugby family!

Can we just take a moment to appreciate what we're witnessing right now? The British & Irish Lions are tearing it up in Australia, and honestly, it's giving us all the rugby feels. If you're anything like us, you've probably been glued to your screens, shouting at the TV.

What Makes the Lions Tour So Special?

Look, we all know rugby brings out the best in people, but there's something magical about the Lions tour that happens every four years. Picture this: the absolute cream of the crop from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales suddenly forget their rivalries and become brothers in arms. They head down to the southern hemisphere – this time Australia – and it's basically rugby nirvana.

It's not just about the matches (though they're absolutely quality). It's about watching players you've cheered against suddenly wearing the same jersey. It's about seeing communities come together. It's pure rugby magic, and we're here for every single second of it.

How Are the Boys Getting On?

Right, let's talk results – and spoiler alert, it's been pretty bloody brilliant so far!

The tour kicked off with a bit of a reality check in Dublin against Argentina (lost 24-28), but since landing in Oz? Absolute dominance:

Western Force: Smashed 54-7 (ouch!)

Queensland Reds: Demolished 52-12

NSW Waratahs: Solid 21-10 win

ACT Brumbies: Convincing 36-24

AUNZ Invitational XV: Complete shutout 48-0

Australia (1st Test): Clutch 27-19 victory in Brisbane

That's five wins from five in Australia, plus they've taken the lead in the Test series. Not too shabby, eh?

The Test Series – Where Dreams Are Made

Brisbane's Electric Night

Suncorp Stadium was absolutely buzzing for that first Test. You know that feeling when you're at a big match and the atmosphere just gives you goosebumps? That was Brisbane all over. The Lions scraped through 27-19, and you could feel the relief and excitement through the screen.

Australia's Fighting Back

But here's the thing about the Wallabies – they don't roll over easily. Joe Schmidt's brought back the big guns with Rob Valetini and Will Skelton for the second Test. Eddie Jones (remember him?) is stirring the pot, telling Australia to "physically upset" the Lions from minute one.

Classic Eddie, right?

The Irish Influence

What's fascinating is how Andy Farrell's leaning heavily on his Irish lads – nine of them made the match-day squad for the first Test. And can we talk about Finn Russell for a second? The man's been absolutely class, showing the kind of maturity and game control that makes you sit up and take notice.

Rugby Corner Flags Explained: Rules, Placement, and Purpose

Rugby is a thrilling sport that thrives on precision, teamwork, and discipline. Amidst the fast-paced action and tactical strategies lies an often-overlooked yet vital element of the game—the rugby corner flag. These flags might not see as much attention as the players or the ball, but they play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the game. Today, we’re exploring the rules, placement, and purpose of rugby corner flags, giving them the spotlight they deserve.

Rules Governing Rugby Corner Flags

What the Rules of Rugby Say

The official rugby rules lay out very specific guidelines for corner flags. These flags must stand at least 1.25 meters tall and have a non-pointed top to ensure safety during play. They’re typically made from flexible material like foam or plastic to avoid injury in case of collisions. While they might seem like minor fixtures, their adherence to these regulations is critical for standardising matches worldwide.

Interaction with Players and the Ball

What happens if a player or the ball touches a corner flag during a match? According to rugby rules, merely touching the flag does not automatically mean the ball is out of play. Play continues as long as neither the ball nor the player crosses the touchline or the in-goal area where it’s not allowed. For instance, a winger diving for a try near the corner flag won’t be penalised if their hand brushes the flag as long as they remain inbounds. It’s these nuanced rules that make the corner flag an integral part of boundary decisions.

Comparison Across Rugby Codes

While the basic principles of corner flags apply across variations of rugby, minor differences exist between rugby union and rugby league rules. Rugby union, for example, tends to emphasise clear in-goal regulations involving corner flags, while rugby league often focuses more on simplifying play scenarios near the touchlines.

Placement of Corner Flags on the Field

Standard Positioning

Corner flags are positioned at the precise intersections of the goal line and the touch-in-goal line. Their symmetrical placement ensures balance and fairness on the field. This precision is vital, as even the slightest misplacement can confuse players, referees, and spectators.

Marking Boundaries

Simply put, corner flags are boundary markers. They signify the edges of the playing field and help clarify whether a ball or player is in play or out. Their clear visibility is particularly important when determining pivotal moments, such as kicks or tackles made perilously close to the touchlines.

Practical Maintenance

During matches, corner flags aren’t just placed and forgotten. They need to be securely anchored to withstand wind or force from players brushing past them. However, they’re designed to be flexible enough to bend or fall over without causing harm. Weather and intense gameplay can damage them mid-match, so maintenance crews must remain vigilant.

The Purpose of Rugby Corner Flags

Enhancing Gameplay

Corner flags act as visual guides for players and referees. When a winger sprints toward the edge of the try line, or when a kick is aimed near the corner, those tiny flags ensure everyone knows where the field ends and in-play space begins. Without them, the risk of confusion and disputes rises dramatically.

Supporting Referee Decisions

Referees rely heavily on corner flags to make accurate boundary calls. Whether it’s declaring a try near the edge of the in-goal area or ruling the ball out of play, these flags are indispensable. Picture a contentious play where the ball rolls tantalisingly close to the touchline—corner flags provide that extra confirmation for fair judgments.

Tradition and Aesthetics

Beyond their functional roles, corner flags contribute to the timeless traditions of rugby. They’ve been part of the game for decades, adding a sense of uniformity and professionalism to the field. Visually, they also enhance the rugby-playing environment, creating a polished and structured look.

Corner flags might not be the stars of rugby, but their importance cannot be overstated. From upholding the game’s rules and marking vital boundaries to aiding referees and preserving traditions, these seemingly simple objects are foundational to rugby’s integrity and enjoyment.

In the fast-paced world of rugby, agility is a fundamental skill that can significantly enhance a player's performance on the field. Being able to quickly change direction, dodge opponents, and maintain balance under pressure can make the difference between a successful play and a missed opportunity. One effective tool for honing these skills is the rugby slalom pole. This blog will guide players and coaches on how to enhance agility through dedicated slalom pole drills, turning training sessions into powerful agility-boosting workouts.

The Role of Agility in Rugby

What is Tag Rugby?

Tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby that has been gaining popularity among various age groups and skill levels. This inclusive sport allows people of all backgrounds to enjoy the thrill and excitement of rugby without the physical demands of tackling. In this blog, we will delve into what tag rugby is, its rules, benefits, and how you can get started.

History and Origin of Tag Rugby

Tag rugby originated as a training aid for traditional rugby, providing a safe way to practice without the risk of injury. Over time, it evolved into a standalone sport with its own set of rules and competitions. Its simplicity and inclusivity have helped it spread globally, becoming popular in countries like the UK, New Zealand, and Australia.

Basic Rules and Gameplay

The primary goal of tag rugby is to score more points than the opposing team by making tries. A typical tag rugby pitch is usually half the size of a full rugby field, which makes the game faster-paced and easier to manage for beginners. Each player wears a belt with two tags attached, and a standard rugby ball is used during the game.

The game begins with a kickoff, and players score points by touching the ball down in the opponent's try zone. Instead of tackling, defenders stop play by removing one of the ball carrier's tags, making the game much safer. The ball must be passed backwards or laterally; forward passes are not allowed, maintaining the essence of traditional rugby. Matches typically last 40 minutes, split into two 20-minute halves, with teams comprising seven players each on the field.

Differences Between Tag Rugby and Traditional Rugby

One of the most significant differences between tag rugby and traditional rugby is the elimination of physical tackles, which reduces the risk of injury and makes the game accessible to more people. Minimal gear is required for tag rugby—just tags, belts, and a rugby ball—making it simpler and less costly to participate. The physical demands are also lower, appealing to those who may find traditional rugby too strenuous. Furthermore, tag rugby is suitable for all ages and skill levels, promoting a more inclusive environment where everyone can participate and enjoy the game.

Benefits of Playing Tag Rugby

Playing tag rugby offers numerous benefits, particularly in terms of physical fitness. It improves cardiovascular health by enhancing heart and lung function and strengthens overall physical conditioning through increased agility. Beyond physical benefits, tag rugby encourages social and teamwork skills, fostering cooperation, communication, and camaraderie among players. Its inclusive nature and low injury risk make it safe for beginners and those who may not want to engage in full-contact sports.

How to Get Started

To get started with tag rugby, begin by searching online for local tag rugby leagues or clubs in your area. You'll need some basic gear, including a tag rugby belt, tags, and a rugby ball. For beginners, it’s essential to familiarise yourself with the basic rules and gameplay. Practice passing, catching, and tagging in a safe environment to build your skills. Joining a beginner-friendly league or casual playgroup can also help you get comfortable with the game and meet new people.

Common FAQs About Tag Rugby

Do I Need Prior Experience? No prior experience is necessary; tag rugby is designed to be easy to learn.

Can Children Play Tag Rugby? Yes, it's a great sport for children due to its non-contact nature.

What Are the General Safety Precautions? Ensure proper warm-ups, use correct equipment, and follow the rules to minimise injury risks.

How Competitive Is Tag Rugby? It ranges from casual social play to competitive leagues, catering to all levels of interest.

Tag rugby is a dynamic and inclusive sport that offers the excitement and camaraderie of traditional rugby without the physical demands of tackling. Its origins as a training aid have blossomed into a globally recognised sport, enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels. The simplified rules and non-contact nature make it accessible and safe, promoting cardiovascular health, physical conditioning, and vital social skills. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned athlete looking for a new challenge, tag rugby is an excellent choice.

How to Choose the Perfect Rugby Ball for Your Skill Level

Choosing the right rugby ball is crucial for any player, whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional. The perfect rugby ball can enhance your performance, improve your skills, and ensure you enjoy the game to its fullest. This detailed guide is designed to help players at all skill levels find the best rugby balls for their needs, optimising your choice based on various factors like material, size, and intended use.

What Makes a Rugby Ball?

Rugby balls consist of several key components:

Outer Cover: Usually made of synthetic materials or natural leather. The outer cover provides durability and affects the grip of the ball. Modern rugby balls often use synthetic materials that offer better weather resistance compared to traditional leather

Bladder: The bladder holds the air and provides the ball's shape. It is usually made of latex or butyl. Latex bladders are more flexible and provide better touch, while butyl bladders retain air longer and are more durable

Grip: The textured surface helps players handle the ball. Different brands and models offer varying degrees of grip, affecting how easy it is to catch and hold the ball in wet or dry conditions

Stitching: Ensures the ball's durability and shape retention. Hand-stitched balls are typically of higher quality than machine-stitched ones, offering better longevity and performance.

Each component plays a vital role in how the ball performs during a game, impacting aspects such as grip, aerodynamics, and overall feel.

Rugby Ball Sizes Explained

Understanding the different sizes of rugby balls is essential for choosing the right one:

Size 5: The standard size for adult and professional matches. It measures about 27 cm in length and has a circumference of 60 cm at its widest point.

Size 4: Suitable for youth and junior players, generally aged between 10-14 years. It is slightly smaller, making it easier for younger players to handle.

Size 3: Ideal for young children and beginners, typically under 10 years old. Its smaller size and lighter weight facilitate easier learning and handling.

Material Matters

Rugby balls come in two primary materials:

Synthetic Leather: Durable and suitable for all weather conditions. Synthetic balls have become the standard due to their resilience and consistent performance.

Natural Leather: Offers a traditional feel but may require more maintenance. Leather balls are less common today but are still preferred by some for their authentic touch and feel.

Choosing the Right Rugby Ball for Beginners

Key Features to Look For

When selecting a rugby ball for beginners, consider the following features:

Durability: Look for a ball that can withstand intense practice sessions and rough handling without losing shape or performance.

Affordability: Budget-friendly options are important for beginners who might not want to invest heavily in their initial equipment.

Extra Grip: Helps beginners get a better hold of the ball, especially during drills and basic training exercises.

Selecting Rugby Balls for Intermediate Players

Intermediate players should focus on:

Balance: A balance between performance and durability is crucial as players start to develop and refine their skills.

Enhanced Grip and Control: Improved grip and control features help intermediate players handle and manoeuvre the ball more effectively during gameplay.

Training Rugby Balls

Training-specific rugby balls are designed to withstand rigorous drills and exercises. They typically have extra grip and durability to endure extensive use. Using a dedicated training ball can help preserve the condition of match balls.

Match Rugby Balls

Match rugby balls are crafted for peak performance during games. They offer precision, accuracy, and a consistent feel, often featuring hand-stitched panels and high-quality materials to ensure the best possible performance.

Custom and Team Rugby Balls

Custom rugby balls allow teams to personalise their equipment. This fosters team spirit and provides a unique identity. Many manufacturers offer customisation options for logos, colours, and designs, making it easy to create a ball that represents your team’s brand.

Selecting the perfect rugby ball depends on understanding your skill level and specific needs.
Are Rugby Tackle Bags Effective for Improving Tackling Technique?

Tackling is a fundamental skill in rugby that can make or break a game. Effective tackles not only prevent the opposition from gaining ground but also create opportunities for turnovers and counterattacks. With this in mind, many coaches and players have turned to rugby tackle bags for training. But are rugby tackle bags truly effective for improving tackling technique? Let's explore.

What are Rugby Tackle Bags?

Rugby tackle bags are specialised training tools designed to help players practice their tackling skills safely and effectively. They come in various shapes and sizes, including player-shaped bags that mimic the height and build of an opponent, low-height bags for practicing lower body tackles, and double wedge tackle shields for working on different angles and techniques.

Benefits of Using Rugby Tackle Bags

Safety: Tackle bags provide a safer alternative to live tackling practice, reducing the risk of injury during training sessions.

Consistency: They offer a consistent target, allowing players to focus on technique without the variability of a moving opponent.

Controlled Environment: Tackle bags enable players to work on specific skills in a controlled setting, which can be particularly beneficial for beginners.

Tackling Techniques

Key Components of a Good Tackle

Body Positioning: Proper stance and alignment are crucial for effective tackling. Players must stay low, keep their back straight, and lead with their shoulder.

Leg Drive: Powerful leg drive is essential for driving the opponent backward and completing the tackle.

Arm Wrapping: Wrapping the arms around the opponent ensures secure contact and prevents them from breaking free.

How Rugby Tackle Bags Simulate Tackling

Rugby tackle bags replicate the impact and resistance of a live opponent, helping players develop muscle memory through repetition. They allow athletes to practice body positioning, leg drive, and arm wrapping without the unpredictability and risk associated with live tackling.

Effectiveness of Rugby Tackle Bags

Pros of Using Rugby Tackle Bags

Injury Prevention: By minimising contact with teammates, tackle bags reduce the likelihood of injuries during practice.

Focused Practice: Players can hone specific aspects of their tackling technique, such as head placement and shoulder positioning.

Versatility: Tackle bags can be used in various drills to improve different tackling skills, from front-on tackles to side tackles.

Rugby tackle bags offer numerous benefits, including injury prevention, consistent practice, and a controlled environment for skill development.

While rugby tackle bags are effective for improving certain aspects of tackling technique, they should be used in conjunction with live tackling drills. This holistic approach ensures players are well-prepared for the demands of real-game situations.

Rugby versus American Football

American Football has enjoyed a strong and growing fan base throughout the UK thanks to a new partnership formed between the National Football League (NFL) and the Rugby Football Union (RFL) in November 2015.

NFL originated from early versions of rugby in the United States, and because of this Twickenham recently welcomed the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams to its stadium in October 2016 to stage the first ever non-rugby sporting event of its scale since the famous rugby venue opened in 1909. General admission tickets to the game sold out in minutes and there are two further American Football games planned at Twickenham over the next 3 years.

But despite the avid following of the NFL in the UK, the game of Rugby and American Football remains very different. Below, Centurion takes a look at some of the key differences between the two popular games.

Players

The game of Rugby has 15 players and 8 reserves to form a 23-man squad. When a starting player from the team leaves, he or she will not return to the field unless there is a concussion or major injury. Reserves do not have to be used either. In American Football, although there are only 11 players from each side on the field at any time, the overall team is made up of 45 players ranging in size and speed who possess different roles within the team. The 'offence' are the team's attacking players who attempt to move the ball forward and score touchdowns. The 'defence' are players who line up to stop the other team's offence from having possession of the ball. In addition, there is a 'special' team that only comes in on kicking situations such as punts, field goals and kick offs.

Passing

Passing is different for Rugby and American Football players. In Rugby, passing the ball back is one of the key elements of the game. An unintentional throw forward or 'knock-on' is an infringement to the game and will lead to a scrum being awarded to the opposition. In American Football general play, players can throw the ball forward, kick it or even pass it backward.

Length

The game of rugby lasts 80 minutes over two 40 minute halves whereas in the NFL the games are divided into four 15 minute quarters, separated by a 12-minute break at half time. There are also 2 minute breaks at the end of the first and third quarters as teams change ends of the field after every 15 minutes of play.

Tackling

In rugby, a tackle serves two main purposes, to bring a player to the ground or hold them and keep them off the deck. In NFL, if the defence brings the ball carrier to the ground (i.e. a player is tackled when one or both of his knees touch the ground), then play is over. Play also ends when a player runs out of bounds (as it does in rugby if the ball is run into touch or kicked out).

General play

As long as you hold onto the ball in rugby, you can do whatever you can to move the ball up the field. In American Football, play is measured in yards (1 yard is 0.9144 metres). The field is 100 yards long as opposed to a 100 metre field in rugby. The offensive team tries to get as much “yardage” as it can to try and move closer to the opponent’s end zone. Each time the offense gets the ball, it has four downs, or chances, in which to gain 10 yards. If the offensive team successfully moves the ball 10 or more yards, it earns a first down, and another set of four downs.

Scoring

In Rugby, a try is worth five points, a conversion two – and a penalty or drop goal is worth three points. In American Football, a touchdown (roughly equivalent to a try) is worth six points. A field goal, which a team can opt for if they cannot score a touchdown, is worth three points and can be attempted from anywhere on the field, although generally these are kicked from inside the defence’s 45-yard line on fourth down. An American Football field goal attempt is normally carried out by a specialist kicker who will come onto the field and the goal is kicked with a team-mate holding the ball. In rugby, the field goal is attempted using a drop-kick.

Physical fitness varies from sport to sport. For example, being fit for Rugby means developing the components of strength, power and speed, whereas marathon runners require a highly developed level of aerobic fitness. If you want to develop your fitness as a rugby player, you should be thinking about 5 key components - stamina, strength, speed, suppleness (flexibility) and skill.

In general, most rugby players will need to be reasonably capable in all five fitness components - the higher the level of play, the greater fitness is required to meet the demands of the game. There are also different fitness demands on rugby players depending on which position they play in, for example, strength can be important for the props whereas speed is more crucial for the backs.

Below is a series of recommendations for fitness tests for rugby players:

Aerobic fitness - The shuttle run (beep) test is great for testing the aerobic fitness of a whole team. Aerobic fitness is a very important component of fitness for rugby due to the distance each player covers throughout the game.

Strength - Strength levels should be determined and monitored for changes in conjunction with training. The vertical jump test measures leg power whilst maximal strength tests such as the 1 RM Bench Press should be conducted for specific exercises.

Flexibility - Good hamstring flexibility is important for rugby players for running and also for their ball kicking skill. The sit and reach test is good for testing lower back and hamstring flexibility.

Speed - speed and acceleration are both very important in rugby, as well as testing running speed whilst carrying the ball. A good fitness test is to time a 40m sprint with a split time for the first 10m which should be measured.

Body fat - excess body fat can affect a rugby player's ability to move freely around the field whilst the extra weight can cause additional fatigue during a game. Measure body fat using the skinfold method or by monitoring body weight assuming there is no change in muscle mass.

Agility - rugby players must possess the ability to quickly change direction in order to evade the defense and make a break. Choose an agility test where the player has to make a turn of less than 45 degrees - no turns greater than this are made at speed during a game.

Fitness Tests for Junior Rugby Players

Fitness tests for younger rugby players should focus on general motor fitness as opposed to specific rugby position fitness - the latter will improve naturally following the progression of motor fitness. Motor fitness consists of four key areas - locomotion, balance, manipulation and awareness skills. Fitness tests for each area are listed below:

Locomotion - some of the fitness tests that can be carried out on junior rugby players involve walking, jogging, cruising, sprinting, turning at pace, side-stepping, evading, running with a forward drive, moving sideways and backwards and so on.

Balance - junior rugby players should practice being able to manage balance in different stances, while being opposed by a partner or changing direction at pace.

Manipulation - this is all about co-ordination for rugby players. Fitness tests should include practising the co-operation of hand and foot movements at pace, for example, the ability of a player to pick up a ball on the move whilst changing direction at speed.

Awareness - this involves the rugby player's ability to judge space and time and to decide what are the best ways to exploit these.

It is important that all areas of motor fitness are well developed as a junior rugby player so they can bring an impressive level of fitness and skill to the senior game. Furthermore, the adult-player who has neglected the development of motor fitness during progress as a junior rugby player, could be disadvantaged long-term.

Should headguards be compulsory in Rugby?

Wearing a headguard whilst playing rugby is not compulsory. Rugby players currently have the option of wearing helmets which are made of soft plastics and only provide minimal protection from impacts.

Rugby helmets are most commonly worn by rugby forwards to protect their head and ears in the scrum. Below, Centurion explores the arguments for and against making headguards compulsory in the game of rugby.

What's currently available?

If you are a rugby player currently seeking rugby protective equipment, scrum caps or headguards are available to buy and wear from most sporting websites.

Scrum caps & headguards - are designed to protect the head and ears from scrapes, cuts, abrasions and cauliflower ear. Scrum caps are good for reducing bleeding head wounds but they are NOT designed to prevent concussion, a common misconception. There is no evidence that scrum caps help with concussion and they should not be worn for this purpose alone.

N-Pro Headguard - N-Pro has built a headguard specifically to help prevent medical issues arising from forceful collisions on the rugby pitch. The makers claim it can protect players from concussion by reducing 'G-force' energy that's transferred to a player's head. Working with Ulster rugby club, the creators developed the product allowing players to retain peripheral vision and also be able to hear their teammates.

"N-Pro manages the G-Force through its multi-layer construction, reducing the energy transferred to the brain by up to 75 percent compared to current headguards on the market," the creators say in a statement.

The creators have added that the N-Pro rugby headguard it is the first piece of head gear for rugby players that has been built within the European Union's legal framework for medical devices. The £135 headguard, is available in five different sizes and was tested in labs and a pre-clinical environment before it was tested on humans.

On 14th November 2016, the governing body of rugby around the world issued a statement saying the N-Pro needs to undergo more rigorous testing before it is widely used in the game.

Should headguards be compulsory?

When tag rugby evolves into contact rugby and junior rugby players are subjected to rucks, mauls and line-outs, parents have campaigned to suggest that at this point junior players should be wearing headguards.

However, many of the professional rugby players do not wear headguards, therefore children are not as keen to wear the rugby protective equipment which is causing a problem with young people being injured in the game.

Parents have argued that, unlike football, where shin pads are compulsory, there is nothing compulsory in rugby to protect player's soft tissues and heads. Like cycle helmets and ski helmets which are worn by pretty much everyone now, parents are campaigning to raise awareness of the danger of rugby and the importance of wearing a protective headguard for junior rugby players.

Could headguards add to the concussion problem?

Some experts are currently campaigning against the use of headguards to protect players from concussion. Scrum caps or headguards currently available on the market do not claim to protect players from concussion and there is the growing concern that players are being duped into thinking that they do.

Dr Mike Loosemore, the doctor for the British boxing team and a leading member of the medical team at the London Olympics 2012, has been influential in the removal of headguards in amateur boxing, and is keen that other contact sports should not make the same mistake.

Dr Loosemore said; “I worry that the sport will look to bring in more protective equipment when all the evidence suggests it would be counter-productive. Headguards give an illusion of safety. If you think you are protected by a headguard, you are more likely to put your head where it shouldn’t be.”

The science behind concussion

People's perceptions of brain injury differ greatly from what actually occurs. Most people believe that it is actually the blow to the head itself that creates the damage, but concussion actually results from a process referred to as 'neural whiplash' whereby the whole head accelerates causing the brain to move around its capsule and become bruised or damaged.

Although headguards may make rugby players less likely to suffer a broken skull and will prevent cuts and blood injuries to the head and ears, they do not stop the whole head from moving sharply after an impact - the cause of concussion.

Players who opt to wear headguards should therefore be mindful of their limitations. One Dr Loosemore's growing concerns is that rugby players may be lulled into a false sense of security when wearing a headguard and become even more susceptible to head injuries by thinking they are protected.
