Scammers use official-looking documents, names, case numbers and other information to make their claims appear legitimate. They want to pressure people into sending money, or providing personal information.

Steven Palmer — Westport’s Planning & Zoning director in the 2010s — passed away peacefully on Monday, surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 59.

After college, the Fairfield native began a 20-plus-year career in municipal planning and zoning. He served as director in Westport, Bethel and New Canaan, earning a reputation for thoughtfulness and reasonableness.

In 2020 he left the public sector to join the family business, Judge Tool & Gage in Stratford. He helped his father Joe bring the 70-year-old company into the digital age. He recently hired his son Michael, to ensure the business remains in the family for future generations.

Steve loved golfing, beautifying his home and yard, traveling, hosting Sunday family dinners, and body surfing.and open up. Even the family dogs seemed to love Steve the most.

He is survived by his wife Theresa; children, Michael and Kelly, and their mother Karla; parents Joe and Gwen; brothers, Chris (Marjory) and Joe (Colleen); nieces, nephews and great-nephew; Theresa’s children Christian (Jessica), Allison (Michael), Matthew (fiancée Victoria), Helen and Fisher (Greg), and Theresa’s grandchildren Blakely, Pasquale, Walker and Giada.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday (August 31, 10 a.m., 10 a.m., St. Pius X Church, Fairfield). Friends and family may visit at the Spear-Miller Funeral Home in Fairfield on Sunda (August 30, 2 to 5 p.m.). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Smilow Cancer Hospital.

She is 11 years old, and lives in Germany. Her godparents live in Westport. Paula visited them this summer. She had such a great time — in so many ways — she decided to write about it for “06880.”

So sit down. Relax. Read Paula’s thoughtful, insightful words.

Then realize: An 11-year-old German girl nailed it.

So the next time you’re consumed with anger, outrage or any other negative emotion, about traffic or parking or a dogport – look at Westport through Paula’s eyes.

She sure opens ours.

One of my favorite things this summer was going for walks on Soundview Drive with dogs named Teo, Lola and Bobo. Walking all 3 of them (with help!) at the same time was a little bit chaotic, but it was also one of the best parts of my whole trip.

The view is beautiful, and I loved looking out at the water while the dogs pulled me in 3 different directions. But it allowed me to met a lot of Westport people.

I also got to swim in the ocean, which is something I do not get to do very often in Germany. The water was a little cold at first, but once I got used to it, it was so much fun. I jumped over the waves and floated on my back and looked up at the sky.

This summer I made friends with 3 girls almost the same age who live close by. It is good to have friends my own age around. I hope we can stay in touch and play together again next time I come back.

Something really special happened this summer: the local Westport police made me an honorary Junior Officer! They gave me a little badge, and I felt so proud. The officers were so kind and let me ask them all kinds of questions about their job. I will keep my Junior Officer badge as a memory of my summer in Westport.

I went to golf camp for a few days, and even though I am not the best golfer yet, it was really fun to learn. My swing definitely needs some more practice, but the counselors were patient and nice, and I got a little better every single day.

The birds right on Soundview were very cool to watch. Catching fish right out of the water is really special, and I loved watching them fly around and fight for the oysters. I had never seen anything like it before, and it made me appreciate how much wildlife there is around Westport.

Checking out the tidal gates at Sherwood Pond. I thought it was fascinating to see how the water moves in and out and how the gates work. It felt like a fun little science lesson mixed with an outdoor adventure.

One of the most magical evenings of the summer was when we drove our camper right up next to Compo Beach. We climbed up into the roof tent and ate pizza while watching the most amazing sunset over the water. The sky turned all these incredible colors, and it felt like the perfect way to end a day in Westport.

Westport also has some amazing restaurants, and I got to try a lot of them this summer. I ate at Casa Me, and the food there was so good. I also went to the Lobster Shack, and it turned out to be delicious too. I also loved going to Little Barn, and Romanacci (and OMG) where we had pizza and it became my favorite spot. Of course, the bagels from PopUp Bagels were amazing to have on Sunday mornings. It made it easier being away from the amazing pretzels we have back at home.

Even though all of these adventures were amazing, my favorite part of the summer was spending time with my godparents. We talked, we played card games, we laughed, we cooked together, and they made me feel so at home even though I live so far away.

My godparents also have 3 children, who are all in their 20s now, so they are much older than me, but that never stopped us from having so much fun together. They always joined in and played with me too, and it never felt like there was any age difference at all.

Every time I visit, it feels like coming back to a whole second family, and that is such a special feeling. They all took me on these adventures and made every single day feel special. I already look forward to coming back and seeing everyone again.

I had a chance to meet so many friendly people who were always kind, curious and welcoming to me in Westport, thank you for an unforgettable summer.

I already cannot wait to come back next year!

For nearly 40 years, the Hole in the Wall Gang — founded by our longtime neighbor Paul Newman — has provided “pure camp magic” to children with serious illnesses. They have fun, they laugh, and form great friendships.

All free of charge.

Jordan Glick — the son-in-law of Westporter Jamie Klein — has spent many summers as a camp volunteer. His wife — the Klein’s daughter Stevie Klein-Glick — recently joined him.

This year, both families are collecting and donating items from the Hole in the Wall Gang’s “wish list” (click here to see).  Several are running low in the General, Sports & Rec and Workshop categories.

“Michael Borders: Connecticut Industry” — the newest piece of MoCA\CT’s larger “Looking for History” exhibition — features a monumental mural of 8 5 foot-by-10-foot painted panels. Together, they offers a sweeping visual account of Connecticut’s 8 counties.

Created over more than 2 decades and informed by years of research, the mural traces the state’s history, from Indigenous presence and colonial settlement to industrial expansion, technological invention, and contemporary community life.

Borders incorporates local figures, regional industries, landscapes, tools, machinery, and symbols of labor into his vivid, detailed composition.

Youngsters in grades 6 to 12 who enjoy camping, hiking, outdoor adventures and hands-on life skills: Scouting may be for you.

They and their families can learn more about Troop 36 next Monday (August 31, 7 p.m., Saugatuck Congregational Church).

Founded in 1949, Troop 36 is Westport’s only Scouting America Family Troop, welcoming both girls and boys. They usually meet once a week, with at least 1 weekend outing a month (camping, city tour, merit badge courses). They participate in several community service projects throughout the year.

On Monday night, “Get Up With It” — the 10-member jazz ensemble co-founded by Greens Farms Academy graduate Charlie Hall — wowed a large Levitt Pavilion Crowd with a dazzling tapestry of Miles Davis works.

After the show, members of the group — now in its 3rd decade — said this was their first time on a stage large enough that they could all see each other while playing.

It was also their first outdoor performance as this collective. The setting created a new dynamic for the artists — and the audience.

And finally …. the New York Times reported this sad news well:

Dolly Parton, a rhinestone-studded, rags-to-riches daughter of Appalachia who for six decades ruled country music — and much of pop culture — with an outsize personality and down-home wit that enshrined her as one of America’s most cherished originals, died on Tuesday in Nashville. She was 80.

From her hardscrabble beginnings to glittering stardom, Ms. Parton’s life was the stuff of make-believe. With her voluptuous figure, sparkly stage costumes and blond bouffant wigs, she was likened by the writer Chet Flippo to the Big Rock Candy Mountain, the Depression-era symbol of abundance. Her songs spoke to millions, confronting privation and loss even as they radiated possibility and hope.

She was, quintessentially, a uniter of people. In 2019, The New York Times ran a story with the headline “Is There Anything We Can All Agree On? Yes: Dolly Parton.”

Inducted into both the country music and rock ’n’ roll halls of fame, Ms. Parton was the top-ranking female singer on country radio from 1967 to 1993, and had a total of 25 No. 1 country singles.

He has owned many huskies, all of whom loved Winslow Park. Brian writes:   

There’s a simpler, less costly way to address the safety concerns behind the Winslow Park “Dogport” proposal (the text amendment now before the Planning & Zoning Commission that would allow a fenced dog enclosure in a park that already separates leashed and unleashed areas).

The amendment would change Winslow’s classification, meant to keep town-owned open space unencumbered by structures and reserved for passive recreation. Without P&Z approval, the enclosure cannot be built.

This has become another contentious issue within the Westport community, with more than 60 residents staying for nearly 5 hours at a recent P&Z hearing to voice their views.

Proponents Andrew Colabella and Emme Dorfman argue the enclosure would make the park safer for dogs and owners alike. Andrew points to dogs escaping onto Compo Road North — including a fatal incident — and argues a fenced area would let passive park users avoid off-leash dogs entirely, while letting owners separate small dogs from large ones.

Emme, who developed the idea for a school project, worries her own dogs could get loose at Winslow, adding that no one would be required to use the fenced-in area.

As a near-daily Winslow visitor for over 20 years who has attended every public meeting on this issue, I agree the park has real safety problems. But I don’t agree that a fenced enclosure — and the contentious zoning fight it requires — is the only, or the best, way to solve them.

Responsible ownership and accountability don’t require a fence to exist; they require rules that are enforced, which the town can establish today.

I’m proposing a targeted, lower-cost alternative that needs no zoning change and has already been partially built. After the 2022 fatality on Compo Road North, I worked with the affected family. Twice that summer, I presented a detailed fencing plan to Parks & Recreation.

Fellow dog owners and I began a GoFundMe campaign to cover the cost. Riverside Fence — a contractor with municipal projects from Greenwich to Westport — provided a full quote on May 12, 2022.

The town ultimately did the work itself, but completed only a partial fix, closing wall gaps along a limited stretch near the road rather than the full boundary that was proposed. The town already has a workable, non-zoning solution in hand — it simply hasn’t been finished.

Winslow Park

Three modest steps would complete it, none requiring a zoning change: Finish the remaining 30–40 feet of post-and-rail fencing that separates the leashed and unleashed areas, and add matching mesh; close the remaining stone wall gaps along the east and south meadow on-leash areas near Compo Road North; and install a gated entry at the Playhouse parking lot, the park’s main access point.

Completing this work would fully separate leashed and unleashed areas, resolving the “conflict” and “predictability” concerns proponents raise — concerns that stem largely from how easily dogs move between zones today.  It would also remove conflict risk between families and off-leash dogs in shared spaces like the east meadow sledding hill, and add additional protection for on-leash visitors in the rare event a dog escapes despite a responsible owner’s best efforts.

Pairing this with clear signage — rules posted at every entrance; visible markers at zone boundaries, and a short-term, time-limited increase in enforcement during construction — would round it into a complete safety package.

It comes at a fraction of the cost, maintenance burden, and liability exposure of a permanent enclosure, while preserving the park’s open, unencumbered character for every visitor — not just dog owners.

A documented, funded safety response also carries less liability exposure for the town than an unaddressed, known hazard, and avoids the added upkeep — gate hardware, drainage, worn ground cover — that comes with a permanent enclosure at scale.

Connecticut’s §8-2 “reasonably related” standard asks whether a zoning change is the least restrictive means necessary to meet a legitimate public need. When a more direct, non-zoning remedy is already funded, documented, and on the table, the Commission should weigh that carefully before amending the town’s zoning code over the objections of so many residents.

If you agree, I encourage you to share your views with the Parks & Recreation Department and the Planning & Zoning Commission before the September 14 vote.

Faith moved to Westport from Rowayton in 1989, and wasted no time getting involved in the community. She joined the board of the Westport Library, and began forging relationships with a number of community members.

Earlier in her career Faith was director of development at Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. She held the same position at Norwalk Hospital.

She began her career in Washington, working to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. Later, as her children began to leave the nest, Faith went back to work, first as administrator at the Unitarian Church in Westport, then in a similar role at Earthplace.

Faith also served 4 years on the Board of Education, after holding various PTA leadership roles. She retired in 2020.

Faith grew up in Old Greenwich, the youngest of 5 children. She met her future husband, Teddy Sullivan, at nursery school in Riverside. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary in May.

Faith was an intrepid traveler, and imbued her children with that same passion. There were family trips to Europe, and summer vacations on the coast of Maine. She loved walking trips in France, Italy and Japan.

But her passion was being near the water, whether Penobscot Bay in Maine, Squam Lake in New Hampshire or Compo Beach in Westport. Even as her illness took its toll Faith strolled with her walker at Compo, while her dog Olive cavorted at water’s edge.

Faith felt blessed to have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. They were her greatest joy, always eager to come to Westport to be with their beloved “Birdie.”

Faith is survived by her husband Ted Sullivan; sister Holly Taylor Young; children Theo Sullivan, Annie Sullivan (Devlin) and Jane Sullivan (Culhane), and 4 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Westport on November 7 (2 p.m.) In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Compassionate Care ALS and/or Aspetuck Land Trust.

Today’s “nutshell” — the highlight reel, taped and edited by former media teacher Jim Honeycutt — includes only one cast. The DVD of the other was damaged.

We’re sorry we can’t show all the talent on stage a dozen years ago. But we assure you, both were lookin’ swell.

Everett Sussman (Horace Vandergelder) is an applied mathematics/computer science graduate of Harvard University. He is now a digital creator. He has acted in regional theater productions, including “Sweeney Todd.”

Jack Baylis (Cornelius Hackl) graduated from Point Park University’s musical theater program. He has performed in “Legally Blonde,” “Jersey Boys,” “Children of Eden,” “Peter and the Starcatcher.”

Jack Bowman (Barnaby Tucker) earned a BFA in musical theatre from Pennsylvania State University. He worked on stage and screen in New York. Because of COVID, his focus shifted to digital art. Jack is now an animator with a focus in 2D and 3D design, illustration and animation.

Emma Ruchefsky (Irene Malloy) performs professionally under the stage name Emma Charles (and occasionally EMMMA).She has toured nationally and released acclaimed singles and EPs. Billboard recognized her as a Best Emerging Artist. She continues to write, record and tour.

Jacob Leaf (Rudolf Weisenweber) is a professional actor. He has appeared in “Mamma Mia!,” “Gypsy,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Eurydice” and more.

Christian Melhuish (Joe the barber) is a singer, actor and dancer in New York. After graduating from Temple University with a BFA in musical theater, Christian has performed regionally around the country. Credits include Jesus (“Godspell”), Romeo (“Romeo & Juliet”) and Bob Gaudio (“Jersey Boys”). He has also performed Off-Broadway and in cabarets and staged readings.

Mackenzie Lavoie (Mrs Rose) earned a bachelor of science in arts administration, combined arts and a minor in film and media studies at Wagner College. She is a communications and PR professional specializing in strategic storytelling, media relations and brand positioning.

Julia Mandelbaum (Mrs Price, court stenographer) graduated from Rider University. She performed professionally in “Evita,” “Singing in the Rain,” and more

For many years it was the Kiwanis Westport Triathlon (“The Minuteman”). Money raised went back to the community.

Two years ago, Kiwanis handed the race to myTeam Triumph Connecticut. Entries still fund a local cause: mTT-CT puts athletes with disabilities into endurance events across the state, at no cost to the athlete or their family.

The course is the same. And it’s still a hometown race, run by neighbors, for anyone willing to show up.

The 2026 edition is Sunday, September 27. Registration is 7 a.m. The competition begins at 8:30.

The course is short: a 1/2-mile jetty-to-jetty swim, 5.5 miles on bikes through the flat Compo neighborhood, and a 2.2-mile run.

There are 3 ways to take part

Race it. Go solo, or split with 2 friends as a swim-bike-run relay. The field already runs from age 12 to 80. For many, this is their first triathlon. Register at active.com.

Race with myTeam Triumph. The organization pairs athletes with disabilities (“captains”) with volunteer athletes )”angels”) who push, pull and pace them through the course. Angels can cover 1, 2 or 3 legs. Sign up at runsignup.

Volunteer. A race this size needs people holding clipboards, pointing at corners, registering, marking bodies, at the transition area, course marshals, and at the finish line and cleanup. No athletic ability is required. Sign up at runsignup.

Harvest Fest is one of Westport’s best parties ever.

Wakeman Town Farm’s biggest fundraiser (and food & wine) event of the year includes tons of seasonal fare from local farmers and chefs, wine and signature cocktails, live music, an auction with culinary and travel experiences, and much more.

It’s the closest thing our town has to an old-fashioned barn-raising party. And proceeds help WTF provide education to folks of all ages, incomes and abilities.

It’s a “John” fest on Sunday September 6 (12:30 p.m., Saugatuck Rowing Club).

First Folk Sunday features the music of John Denver and John Prine. Two singer/songwriters — Westport’s Suzanne Sheridan and Northampton’s Dave Dersham — provide their interpretations of the iconic musicians. Both straddled the line between folk and traditional country music, relying heavily on acoustic guitar and narrative storytelling.

Tanya — a strategic and operations professional who moved here in 2023, and has already gotten involved in town activities as a Westport Library trustee and member of the Fair Rent Commission — wanted to learn more about the project.

What are the plans? What will it look like? What’s the timeline?

She reached out to the Long Lots School Building Committee, and offered to help.

They quickly accepted her offer.

This week, her contribution — a new, clear, informative and very user-friendly website — launched.

Handsome typeface and easy navigation are 2 key features.

Though not part of the official westportct.gov website — its URL is https://llsbc.org/ — it may be the best “town site” of all.

Tanya worked closely with the Long Lots School Building Committee on the site’s design. She approached it as a parent interested in learning more about the project.

“It’s a good way to orient yourself to the job site. It’s not too technical,” she explains.

But users with a technical bent find plenty of links to satisfy their inner engineer, too.

Tanya will continue to update the LLSBC website over the next couple of years. (Move-in date for students, it notes, is expected to be January of 2028.)

Meanwhile, let’s hope she has time for a new project.

And not just for students.

Hundreds of teachers, administrators and support staff packed the newly renovated Staples High School auditorium this morning, for the Westport Public Schools’ annual opening convocation.

There were several highlights, like the announcement of the district Teacher of the Year (Saugatuck Elementary School literacy coach Jessica Carey), and superintendent of schools Thomas Scarice’s keynote address (including a video appearance by comedian Colin Mochrie).

But the most rousing applause — and a prolonged standing ovation — came near the beginning, when Scarice invited the facilities team and security officers to the front of the room.

Scarice offered anecdotes of the work the often-unheralded work performed every day by custodians, maintenance staff, and security officers. Their value to the district was recognized long and loudly, by the men and women they work with.

Scarice also hailed the educators, administrators, nurses, counselors, paraprofessionals and others who  make the district successful. He said that in his 30 years in education, “this is the most incredible faculty, from pre-K through high school.”

He thanked the 3 Board of Education members — Jill Dillon, Lee Goldstein and Stephen Shackelford — in attendance too, along with all staff members with 20 or more years of service.

There are 31 new teachers this year, plus another 31 support staff and 15 interns.

Introducing Carey as Teacher of the Year, Saugatuck principal Beth Messler cited her work helping students become “readers, writers, communicators and kind human beings.”

Carey — a Westport teacher since 2005, and No Place for Hate co-leader — also “influences colleagues and administrators,” Messler said. “And she makes sure that real, authentic books stay in kids’ hands.”

Nominations come from the staff. The final selection is made by former Teachers of the Year, with assistant superintendent of schools John Bayers.

Scarice’s keynote included 3 pieces of advice he has offered his 3 children — Where is your focus? What does it mean? What are you going to do? — and 4 premises he hopes all Westport Public Schools employees will think about:

• The world has changed.
• We have a moral imperative to prepare students for that world.
• AI is a force multiplier.
• Technology must serve humanity — not the other way around.

The convocation began with performances by the Staples High Jazz Band and cheerleaders, and the national anthem sung by choral students.

On Sunday, September 6, every Westporter is invited to help create a one-of-a-kind portrait of the town. We’ll do it by taking a photograph that captures one real moment from our day.

Whether it’s a sunrise at Compo Beach, breakfast with family, volunteering at a community event, opening a business downtown, walking the dog, cheering from the sidelines or enjoying a quiet moment at home, every image will become part of a collective portrait of Westport.

“A Day in the Life of Westport” is a collaboration between the Artists Collective of Westport, the League of Women Voters Westport, the David T. Langrock Foundation, and “06880.”

As part of Westport’s America 250 celebration, the project will document the town in its everyday rhythms, creating a lasting record of who we are as a community in this semiquincentennial year.

Inspired by the classic Life magazine photo essays documenting “A Day in the Life of America,” the project invites residents of every age to photograph one moment on Sunday, September 6, then submit it online with a brief caption describing what the image means to them.

Photos must be taken on Sunday, September 6, and submitted by midnight that evening at dayinthelife2026.artcall.org. The submission website will accept photographs only on the day of the event.

Each participant may submit up to 3 shots, each accompanied by a brief caption describing the moment.

For years, Village Pediatrics’  “Story Walk” — an often-changing display along the Saugatuck River — has made doctors’ visits fun.

Now they’ve added a new chapter.

Dr. Neysa McDonald has started a “Little Free Library” for kids. It’s by the Riverwalk near their office, at 323 Riverside Avenue.

While it’s a treat children can have after a physical or sick visit, Village Pediatrics says it’s open to the general public too.

Dr. McDonald built the free library, with painting and personalization by medical assistant Caleigh Porter.

Dr. Bill — the very popular office dog — is prominently displayed on the side of the structure.

Cayden — medical assistant Caleigh Porter’s son — enjoys the Little Free Library.

On Saturday, Ben Stiller was at Stew Leonard’s.

The “Meet the Parents” star was in Norwalk for a well-publicized promo of his recently launched Stiller’s Soda. Entry into the meet-and-greet line required the purchase of a 12-can case ($15, plus tax).

The event drew an enormous crowd. There were reports of fans (presumably of Stiller, not the soda) flying in from Texas.

Gabe Escobar was there too. I didn’t know who he is, but plenty of other people do. AI described him as a “musical theater graduate, and digital content creator with millions of followers across TikTok and Instagram. He is well-known for his solo travel vlogs, comedy sketches, Broadway content, and for sparking the viral ‘girlfriend effect’ fashion trend.”

I also didn’t know what “the viral ‘girlfriend effect’ fashion trend” is, but whatever. (Click here, if you must know.)

Back to Stew’s. Gabe’s encounter with “the worlds [sic] largest grocery store” — (he “didn’t know it was a superlative,” he notes) offers an intriguing perspective on it, as well as on Ben Stiller, suburbia, and the world of influencers in general.

Forget January 1. Pshaw, Rosh Hashanah. Tomorrow — at least for Westport parents and students — is the real start of the new year.

It’s the first day of school.

Whether you’re a kindergartner heading off on your own, a Staples senior already counting the days to graduation, or a mom or dad feeling pride, trepidation and the warp-speed passage of time — or anyone else, who has ever gone to school — this story is for you. 

Summer vacation ends with a thud tomorrow. Each year it’s the same: One day a kid’s free as a bird; the next he’s trapped, chained to the rhythm of the school calendar for 10 long months.

Some youngsters love this time of year; they’re eager to greet old friends, and meet new ones. Or they can’t wait for the smell of newly waxed floors, the security of assigned seats, the praise they know will be lavished on them day after day.

Others abhor it. The thought of entering a strange building filled with strange faces, or trying to be part of a group of peers who won’t accept them, or sitting for hours at a time, doing work they can’t stand, is excruciating — even physically sickening.

Around this time each year, I think about the entire school experience. I wonder which kindergartner will hate school for the rest of the year because his teacher makes a face the morning he throws up in front of everyone, and which will love school because an aide congratulates her the afternoon she almost puts on her coat all by herself.

Which 1st grader will invent any excuse not to go to gym because he can’t throw a ball, and which will get through the school day only because he knows gym is coming soon?

Which 4th grader will walk meekly into class each morning with just one ambition — to get through the day without anyone noticing how ugly, or stupid, or poorly dressed she is — and which will look back on 4th grade as a turning point in her life because a guidance counselor took the time to talk to her, to show her how to comb her hair better, to make her feel good about herself?

Which 5th grader will have a teacher who does nothing when she catches him cheating on a test — too much effort to raise such a touchy issue — and which will have a teacher who scares him so much when he’s caught that he vows to never cheat in school again?

Which 6th grader will enter middle school intent on making a name for himself as the best fighter in his class, and which with the aim of never getting a grade lower than an A?  Which 6th grader’s ambition will change, and which will remain the same?

Which 9th grader will temper his fledgling interest in current events with the feeling “it’s not cool; no one else in class cares,” and which will visit the New York Times website every day because her class is working on “this really neat project”?

Which 10th grader will hate English because all she does is read stupid books assigned by the stupid teacher from some stupid list, and which will go to Barnes & Noble on his own for the first time because his teacher suggests there are more books by the same author he might enjoy?

Which 12th grader will have the brains to apply to 3 Ivy League schools, but lack the common courtesy to thank a teacher who wrote glowing recommendation to all of them? And which will slip a note in a teacher’s box the morning of graduation that says, “Thanks.  I’m really glad I had you this year”?

It’s easy to wrap our school years in nostalgic gauze, or try to stuff the bad memories down our mental garbage disposals.

We also tend not to think in concrete terms about what goes on inside school walls every day. Learning, we assume, happens. Kids read, write, use laptops, draw, eat and see their friends.

We seldom realize how much of an impact this institution we call “school” has on our kids.

Or how much it has had on us.

But between hosting town-wide events at its Bedford Hall auditorium, and the wildly popular 1o7-year-old Yankee Doodle Fair, plenty of guys are familiar with the Imperial Avenue property.

Still, I was a bit surprised that about half of the correct responses to last week’s Photo Challenge — a shot of the Woman’s Club’s moderately hidden patio entrance — came from males.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation took the lead, with its Post Road renovation.

But the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is not sitting back. (Well, actually, they are.)

The popular Sherwood Island State Park pavilion has been closed since January 16 for “assessments for repairs.”

The other day, the Y’s Men of Westport & Weston — which is one of many groups that uses the pavilion — asked for an update.

Parks supervisor Caitlin Munson told Allan Siegert: “We unfortunately do not have any estimated timeframe for the repairs to the pavilion as the project is in the planning phase with the Engineering division, however, it is my best guess that it will remain closed for the remainder of 2026 and the majority, if not all of 2027.

“At this time, I don’t have any details to give, but you’re welcome to check back periodically to see if there are any updates. However- I would say for now while you plan for your events next year, it is safe to assume that the pavilion will remain closed next year.”

That must be some assessment that’s going on.

Ruben — the popular, ever-helpful Westport Post Office clerk — has seen a steady stream of customers requesting passports.

They’ve filled out forms online. But because they googled “Passport application,” and clicked on a “service,” they paid an additional fee that they did not need to.

Frank Mastrone is always a Levitt Pavilion favorite.

His 10th annual appearance last night was extra special. The Connecticut-born Broadway star brought 2 friends: Westporters Dodie Pettit and Rex Fowler.

Dodie met Mastrone when both were in “Phantom of the Opera.” Rex — Dodie’s husband — is the co-founder of Aztec Two-Step. The duo now perform as Aztec Two-Step 2.0.

From “Send in the Clowns” and “Bring Him Home” to “Like a Rolling Stone” and “The Boxer,” it was a great evening.

And the rain held off until 10 minutes after the show ended.

Just hours after she was born 9 weeks early, in June of 2022, Shea Greenfield’s heart stopped beating.

Doctors saved her life. But she was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome. Her heart’s electrical system takes longer than usual to recharge between beats. She is at risk of fainting, seizures, cardiac arrest and sudden death.

There is no cure for the condition. And Shea’s condition is one of the most severe her doctors have ever seen.

Shea’s parents, Mark and Kira, had moved to Westport a year earlier. In addition to educating themselves about LQTS, they began raising funds for the Mayo Clinic, where Dr. Michael Ackerman’s team does cutting-edge research.

In 2023, the Greenfields organized a fundraiser. Others followed. Since then, they’ve raised over $1.4 million.

The next event — “Shank It & Serve It” is September 14, at Birchwood Country Club. The day includes an 18-hole morning golf scramble, 9-hole afternoon scramble, ladies’ point-play tennis tournament and canasta tournament — all capped by a cocktail reception (and pop-up market).

William Bell was a noted fashion photographer. His career began in the 1950s. It extended through the 1970s, when he began designing furniture, silk screening fabric and putting color onto everything he touched.

His daughter Bobbi Liepolt and I — both retired Westport teachers — inherited masses of photographs, slides and transparencies when Bill passed away. Organizing and archiving seemed desirable, but low on the list of priorities as our kids moved away and we began our retirement.

However, one thin box shifted our priorities. Bobbi and our son James found it in a closet. He noted that Bill had scrawled with a thick marker “IMPORTANT,” and opened it.

The photos.

In it we found a tranche of about 40 8×10 color transparencies. Bill had mentioned some of the subjects we found, but no one in our family had seen them.

The subjects range from super models (Suzy Parker, Dolores Hawkins, Sunny Harnett, Evelyn Tripp) to celebrities (Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, David Niven.)

Bill’s extensive list of editorial and covers for Vogue and other Condé Nast publications have been featured in online archives and library publications.

Dodie Kazanjian chose 2 of his Vogue covers for her Met Gallery coffee table book, “Vogue: The Covers.”

He was entrusted with several successful national advertising campaigns. Bill chose Westport for photographs in the witty, award-winning Dunbar furniture series.

However, what Bobbi uncovered was work that had neither been printed nor published. Digitizing a few of the dozen reels of 16mm film that she always thought were shot during family reunions revealed Bill’s record of photo shoots and encounters with prominent figures from the New York fashion world — including her introduction to the teen aged Suzy Parker.

From the moment we began to review and digitize not only the film and  large format transparencies (eventually about 150), but also the medium format and 35mm slides numbering close to a thousand, Bobbi realized that her father’s legacy deserved to be freed from the boxes where it had lain hidden.

Though much archival work remains, Bobbi, I and Bill’s grandchildren have formed the William Bell Estate LLC. We created a website where a portion of the archive can now be seen, along with Bill’s biography, and material placing his work in the world of mid-century New York fashion photography.

For Bobbi, the project has become more than an effort to preserve her father’s photographs. It is a way of bringing back into view the warmth, wit, technical skill and sense of beauty that he brought to his work — and of sharing a part of photographic history that in some cases has not been seen for more than 70 years.

The archive is still revealing itself. Boxes remain to be opened; films to be digitized, viewed and stored; photos to be identified, and stories to be connected.

The Westport Farmers’ Market is 20 years old this year.

Beyond providing hundreds of shoppers with fresh produce and herbs, meats, seafood, breads, ice cream, lunch, Thai food, pet food and knife sharpening each week, they feed over 50,000 people a year through partnerships with the Gillespie Center, Homes for the Brave, Norwalk Arts Space and Cardinal Shehan Center.

To celebrate — and raise funds — they’ve planned a special, intimate event. “Fork It Over” (September 17, 6 p.m., Terrain) features several Big Names (and friends of the Market): Jen Bengtson (Terrain Café), Dan Kardos (Café Melba), Hoodoo Brown Team, John Nealon and Christian Wiki (Crust Issues) and Piereluigi Mazzella (Fatto a Mano).

In February, Rob Simmelkjaer and his daughters traveled to Kenya.

They visited Tirop’s Angels, a non-profit created after elite runner Agnes Tirop was murdered by her domestic partner. The Simmelkjaers spoke with many victims of gender-based violence, an importand issue in the country.

This week Julia — a rising Staples High School senior — announced a “Back to School 5K.” The virtual race will benefit Tirop’s Angels.

Julia is getting many Staples cross country teammates to run, and invites anyone else interested — anywhere in the world — to join them, for a $25 donation.

The race is open through September 13. Runners can race individually, or as part of a team.

Need more incentive than helping a great cause? Runners with the fastest men’s and women’s times get complimentary entry into New York Road Runners’ United Airlines NYC Half Marathon in March.

Last December, “06880” reported that the building next to Five Guys — which old-timers still think of as IHOP, and newer-comers know as the Westport Pancake Shop and/or one of many nail salons — would have a new tenant.

JetSet Pilates — the Miami-based “market leader in Reformer Pilates.” with 100 locations open, or in development — would open there.

“In mid-summer,” we said.

The Westport Country Playhouse has just added 2 new — and very different — shows.

Coming up next in their Barnstormer Series: “The History of a Brief Time” (September 8, 7 p.m.).

Written and performed by Bill Williams, it tells the very personal story of the loss of his son to opioid addiction. Called a “vividly, beautifully and painfully described experience,” it’s one family’s journey through struggle, grief and, ultimately, healing.

On September 19 (1 and 4 p.m.), the big red dog Clifford–bounds onto the stage. The new musical comedy adventure (named for him) celebrates friendship, imagination, and the magic of unconditional love.

Matthew Mandell reports: “The crowd was Comfortably Numb as The Machine — the internationally touring Pink Floyd tribute band — returned to Westport for an exceptional show at the Levitt Pavilion last night.

“They first played here during COVID at the drive-in concerts hosted by the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce and the Westport Library on the Imperial Avenue parking lot.”

Recently, while visiting the John F. Kennedy Library & Museum in Boston, Staples High School Class of 1967 graduate Ron Berler bought a copy of a book he had last read in high school: “Profiles in Courage.”

He was struck, he said, by its currency. “The same issues that tempered brave acts in some members of Congress when Kennedy published his book in 1956 apply today: The fear of losing their next election. Of being tarred as traitors by their party. Of submitting to power. Of forfeiting pride and honor.”

It made him appreciate all the more “those few in Congress who have demonstrated true courage – even if just once.”

As he thought about the type of person he’d like to see in municipal, state and national offices, he wrote an essay. It was just published in Washington Monthly, under the headline “What is Political Courage?” Click here to read Berler’s piece.

Congratulations to winners of the Longshore Women’s Golf Association’s Invitational: Sarah Kim, Sally Rogol, Debbie Thron and MarthaLee Taylor.

Lnnch followed the competition, in the newly (and beautifully renovated) Inn at Longshore ballroom.

Members and guests donated food and money to Homes with Hope, this year’s designated charity.

The LWGA — going strong since 1960 — is open to all women golfers from Westport and surrounding towns.

Next Saturday’s “Movie Under the Stars” — a Weston tradition — is a double feature.

Local band Good Godfrey open the show (August 29, 6 p.m.; free) at the Weston Middle School Field.

The 8 p.m. film is “National Treasure,” starring Nicholas Cage. It is an apt choice, as the country celebrates its semiquincentennial.

Tony’s Pizza Truck will be on hand, at the Weston Commission for the Arts and 250th Advisory Committee event.

So even though the fireworks were, like, 3 days ago, students may have forgotten some basic rules of the road.

And (ahem) parents too.

The Westport Police Department has already begun targeting traffic violators in school zones, with their annual “Back to School” enforcement and education campaign.

They’ll keep doing it. Officers will watch for distracted drivers and speeding in school zones. They’ll also monitor bus stops and routes, citing people who disregard school bus signals.

Police suggest commuters allow extra time. School buses will be on the roads, making (very) frequent stops. There will be children walking and on bikes too (including those powered by more than feet).

The WPD offers these specific tips:

Drivers

• Watch out for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood.
• Be alert! Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
• Yellow flashing lights indicate that the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Slow down, and prepare to stop.
• Red flashing lights and extended stop arms mean that children are getting on or Motorists on both sides of the roadway must stop, and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop sign is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before starting to drive. Children

• Get to the bus stop at least 5 minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive.
• Stand at least 6 feet from the curb, and line up away from the street.
• If you must cross the street in front of the bus, walk on the sidewalk or along the side of the road to at least 10 feet ahead of the bus before you cross. Be sure the bus driver can see you, and you can see the bus driver.
• Getting off the bus, be sure that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps are not caught in the handrails or doors.
• Never walk behind the bus.
• Walk at least 6 feet away from the side of the bus.
• If you drop something near the bus, tell the driver, since he or she may not clearly see you.
• Listen to crossing guards!

To students and drivers alike: Slow down!

A few extra seconds of patience can make the difference between a safe arrival and a tragedy.
