The ballroom, the lawn out back reaching to the Sound, the chance for the bridal party to stay in a charming New England inn — it was all there.

The Inn was also a popular choice for corporate events, fundraising galas, family celebrations — an all-purpose property.

Yet there was always something a bit off.

You couldn’t quite put your finger on it. But now that the Inn at Longshore has reopened — following a year-long renovation — you can see that relatively small changes are a very big deal.

The waterfront location is a major draw. But standing inside the ballroom before, you wouldn’t know it was there.

A stage — with curtains behind it — blocked it.

Now the stage is off to the side. Walking into the ballroom, the first thing you see is a view all the way out to the water.

Designers even moved a beam near the entrance ramp (now steps). Most people won’t notice that difference. But it is dramatic.

Out in back, a broad new deck (with portable bars) invites attendees to flow between indoors and out. It’s a common amenity at country clubs — but missing from the Inn at Longshore for forever.

Weddings now take place on the lawn directly behind — not off to the side, near the tennis courts. The bride walks out from the ballroom, across the deck and down a few steps, making a dramatic entrance.

The first wedding at the new Inn was held September 11. In the middle of my tour with Michael Ryan, managing partner of Longshore Hospitality group — the Delamar-affiliated group that has a 30-year lease with the town of Westport — the grateful mother of that bride stopped by with gifts for the staff. The wedding, she said, was “a dream” — even beyond her expectations.

Another wedding was held on Sunday, September 13. That morning, 7 inches of rain devastated Westport. The wedding was delayed by an hour, to 3 p.m. But it was held outside

The ballroom, deck and lawn (plus improved landscaping) are the most visible changes. (And some things have changed only slightly. The façade retains its traditional look. the porte-cochère was scaled back from its original size, and the stately tree at the entrance is still there.)

But guests who stay on the Inn’s 2nd and 3rd floors will notice many differences too. (On weekends, they’re usually wedding parties. Weekday guests include business executives, travelers — and former Westporters, who want to relive the Inn experience when they return to their home town.)

The 11 rooms and 3 suites have been completely redesigned. Each is unique; all match include modern amenities, but with an old-time inn feel. Every 3rd floor room is dormered.

Room numbers were hand painted. And guests don’t have swipe cards — they’re given actual brass keys.

The Compo Suite

The “Lewis Suite” includes framed photos from the Inn’s long-ago start, as Frederick E. Lewis’ private mansion.

The bride’s suite — used by her party on the day of the wedding — was specially decorated by Serena & Lily.

The third floor honeymoon suite is named for Jay Gatsby. It has a particularly striking view — appropriate, because when F. Scott Fitzgerald rented a home on Compo Road South, it is believed his vista of the Lewis estate all the way to the Sound inspired some of his images in “The Great Gatsby.”

All new state-of-the-art mechanicals ensure smooth operation.

All told, Longshore Hospitality spent $8 million more in capital improvements than they had committed to the town.

The Inn at Longshore is almost completely booked for weddings, through 2027. Bookings for 2028 will begin in November.

La Plage was closed during the renovation. Diners may not see many changes. But the kitchen is completely revamped, easing food prep for both the restaurant and ballroom catering.

Few towns own an inn and restaurant — let alone an entire country club.

For more than 60 years — ever since the town of Westport bought Longshore (paying $1.9 million, for the entire 169 acres) — officials have tried to make the Inn even more special than it is.

Finally, they’ve done it.

Enjoy a fundraiser in the new ballroom. Stay in a very cool room. Have a meal at La Plage.

And — starting soon  — book your 2028 wedding there.

Speaking of last Sunday’s flood: In 2021, the Westport Arts Advisory Committee partnered with landowner David Waldman. They installed 5 mini-murals in the alley behind Anthropologie.

This one depicts what Westport artist Rebecca Ross thought Westport would look like in 50 years.

As Miggs Burroughs notes: “She was off by only 45.”

Westoberfest is less than 2 weeks away.

The 9th annual craft beer and family fall event returns Saturday, October 3 (1 to 5 p.m., Elm Street. Among the highlights: craft beer, music, food, art, shopping, and family-fun activities.

Admission is free. Guests who want to sample more than 50 local and regional beers, from over 20 breweries, can purchase a tasting pass.

This year, Westoberfest introduces a collaboration with 3 local arts organizations for hands-on creativity in the family area.

MoCA\CT invites families to design tote bags using colorful stamps, patterns and doodles, then take them home. One River School of Art + Design offers a fall-inspired mandala activity, while Whimsy Works Atelier brings parent-child creative play.

The family area, sponsored by Gault Family Companies, will feature carnival games from Chris and Pete Amusements, pumpkin decorating, and more.

For friendly competition, the annual stein-holding competition, hosted by CBS News weather anchor and Westport resident Lonnie Quinn, will once again challenge participants to show off their strength and stamina.

One Bad Oyster takes the stage with their energetic ska-surf sound.

Food and treats will be served by Blind Rhino, Freshko by Krisia, Fryborg, LemoNate’s, Lovely Chocolate by Talita Dupin, Paradise Island Food, and Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.

Elm Street will also feature a shopping and services vendor area

Wakeman Town Farm’s “Fantastic Farmhands” welcomed a special guest last week: monarch watch conservation specialist Alice Ely.

She helped the youngsters release Petey, a monarch butterfly, and provided a fascinating peek into the science behind monarch migration.

Before Petey took off, Alice attached a tiny radio tag to his back using eyelash adhesive. The transmitter weighs no more than a grain of rice, so it’s light enough for Petey to fly freely.

Petey wasted no time.

In 2 days, the feisty butterfly traveled 109 miles, heading southwest toward Mexico.

To follow his journey, download the Project Monarch app, then search for Petey2026. You can track his migration in real time as he flies south.

Once they arrive in Mexico, the butterflies stay there until late winter. As temperatures warm and the days get longer, they receive their cue to head north, where they mate and lay eggs on the first milkweed they find — often in Texas.

The tiny tags are powered by solar cells, so Petey may occasionally disappear from the radar while his tag recharges. The WTF butterfly — the first monarch ever released from Connecticut with this type of radio tag — could make it all the way to Mexico.

But the Staples High School girls swim and dive team is washing cars today, rain or (fingers crossed) shine.

They’ll be at 176 Post Road West — the old Carvana spot, opposite Kings Highway Elementary School — from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

A suggested donation is $20. Stop in for a wash. If these girls can spend hours a day in the pool, the least you can do is get wet, while supporting the squad.

Actors have to flexible.

So does their entire company.

Westport Community Theatre had an unexpected change in their season lineup just a few weeks before opening.

“Vintage Hitchcock: A Live Radio Play” moved into the first slot.

It showcases a talented cast of Fairfield County actors, as well as Fairfield playwright Joe Landry.

The show — featuring suspense, intrigue, murder and touch of dark humor — runs through October 4, in the basement level of Town Hall.

Landry transforms 3 Hitchcock thrillers – “The Lodger,” “Sabotage” and “The 39 Steps” – into a 1940s-style radio broadcast performed before a live audience.

The 7-member cast moves among multiple roles, voices and characters as the stories unfold, creating the world of Hitchcock with microphones, scripts, music, and an elaborate soundscape.

Remaining performances are at 2 p.m. Sundays (today, and September 27 and October 4), and 7:30 p.m. on September 24, 25, 26, and October 2 and 3.

It was an ordinary Sunday: September 6. (Timing is everything. The following Sunday saw 7 inches of rain devastate the town.)

Westporters of all kinds — old and young, professional photographers and amateurs, newcomers and old-timers — rose to the challenge.

Using smartphones, actual cameras with expensive lenses, and everything in between, you snapped images. And sent them in.

The final count was 510 submissions. They came from all over town, and showed the wide variety of activities on a late-summer Sunday.

Compo Beach. Soccer. A sandbar party at Old Mil. A car wash. The YMCA. Church. Longshore. The skate park. Saugatuck. Downtown.

All those, and more, are now immortalized in “A Day in the Life of Westport.”

The initiative aims to reduce single-use plastics, and expand water-filling stations around town. The goal is to “turn shared intention into measurable, community-wide change.”

Once a month, we help them highlight an area of daily life where single-use plastic is most common, along with practical ideas to use. This month, we focus on a topic we all relate to: groceries.

Grocery runs are unglamorous. We do them often — and often without thinking.

But think about this: A surprising amount of what ends up in the cart is wrapped in plastic that did not need to be there.

To help Westporters cut down on the plastic entering their home, Sustainable Westport has released its UnPlastic Your Groceries guide. We break the store down, to show where the easiest swaps are.

The UnPlastic Your Groceries guide lays out the specifics:

Produce: Choose loose fruits and vegetables over the pre-bagged multi-pack whenever there’s a choice. Skip the produce bag entirely for anything with a peel, like oranges or avocados. Or use your own reusable produce bags as needed.

Bulk Bins: Both the Westport Whole Foods and Fresh Market stock bulk bins for grains, nuts, snacks and more. Bring your own container, weigh it at customer service, and skip the packaging altogether.

Buy in bulk!

Butcher & Seafood Counter: A simple ask (paper instead of the pre-packaged plastic tray) that most counters are happy to accommodate, even if it’s not posted anywhere. Some stores only have the plastic-wrapped options, so make the best choice you can.

Condiments: Ketchup, mustard, mayo and others all come in glass as well as plastic. They’re usually on the same shelf — at a similar price.

None of this requires a special trip or specific store. It’s the same cart, same list — just a slightly different choice at each stop.

Every individual swap is minor on its own — one glass jar instead of plastic, one loose pepper instead of a bagged 3-pack.

But multiplied across carts, over months, across a town, it adds up to something bigger than waste reduction.

It’s a signal to local stores about what Westporters actually want on the shelf. That’s part of what shapes what gets stocked here in the first place.

“Eversource has yet to restore power to the marina (since the marina construction project). Why Eversource hasn’t restored power there in all of this time is crazy.”

“06880” contacted Public Works director Larry Roberts. He replied quickly:

As part of the Compo marina project, new switch gear was to be installed — this is the exterior cabinet containing the circuit breaker panel and other equipment that receives power from the Eversource transformer, and distributes it to the marina’s sub-panels.

“Load calculations performed during the design phase showed the new switch gear would not exceed what it was replacing; in fact, the calculated amperage called for a smaller panel than the existing one.

“During construction, we learned that Eversource would require a new transformer regardless of the smaller switch gear. That triggered a requirement to ‘harden’ the electrical service to meet updated code — for example, elevating the transformer above the FEMA flood plain.

“When we brought an appropriation request to the Board of Finance, but it was withdrawn due to inaccuracies in the accompanying materials.

“In any event, the work was not anticipated to begin until after the summer boating season.

“We’re now soliciting a competitive bid for the work, which I expect will produce savings — hopefully substantial — compared to the original request. The tradeoff is a longer timeline, partly due to design review by Eversource to confirm the new system meets their regulatory requirements.

“Our goal is to have bids returned and the work completed by late winter. Unfortunately, that means the marina will run on generator power for the rest of the boating season.

“The upside: once complete, the marina, South Beach bathrooms, and event power in the parking lot (Lobsterfest and others) will run on an electrical system that’s resilient to flooding and erosion for years to come.”

The Westport Police Department will buy it back.

On October 3 (10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Police headquarters, Jesup Road), Westport will participate in a statewide gun buyback and gun safe giveaway program.

It’s 100% anonymous. No identification is required.

Gift cards will be exchanged for operable firearms, while supplies last.

In addition, a limited number of free PIN-code gun safes will be available to pistol permit holders while supplies last.

Firearms must be transported in the trunk of the vehicle

Non-working firearms, black-powder weapons, flare guns, ghost guns, pellet/BB guns, ammunition, and magazine clips are not eligible for gift cards, but may still be turned in.

Residents who subscribe to the town’s government email list were surprised to learn yesterday that the Board of Finance is canceling 4 upcoming meetings: October 21, November 18, December 16 and January 20.

But that doesn’t mean they’re pulling a House of Representatives move, and not meeting at all.

Chair Danielle Dobin explains: “The Board of Finance traditionally meets monthly. Collectively, we decided to add a second monthly meeting to ensure that all follow-up appropriation requests could be heard in a timely fashion.

“However, we found that we were consistently canceling these additional meetings, so we are reverting to our traditional monthly schedule. Our regular monthly meetings, which were noticed this past January, remain on the calendar.

“Should a matter arise that requires more immediate consideration, the Board can always schedule an additional meeting as a special session.”

Don’t worry! The Board of Finance will continue to meet monthly, keeping an eye on all town expenditures.

Westport Country Playhouse is famous for producing 2- and 3-week shows.

But they’ve gotten into 1-off programming too.

The Off-Broadway comedy, written and performed by playwright/actor Evan Zes, is based on his own story.

The play follows a struggling New York actor who devises a seemingly clever moneymaking scheme — only to watch it spiral wildly, and hilariously, out of control.

Zes finds himself caught up with a cast of internet scammers and low-level gangsters. In this wild-but-true tale of greed, survival and redemption, Zes brings 25 characters to life.

“Rent Control” enjoyed back-to-back sold-out runs, at its 2016 New York International Fringe Festival debut and the Fringe Encore Series at SoHo Playhouse. Zes has since taken the production internationally.

The Weston History & Culture Center kicks off their new speaker series, “Backstories & Breakfast,” with a bewitching topic.

Three days before Halloween (October 28, 10 a.m.), the topic is “Witches of Connecticut.”

Rebecca Gavin, director of education at the Connecticut Museum of Culture & History, will share stories of some of the women (and men!) accused, tried and executed as witches — and describe how Connecticut ultimately controlled the spread of accusations.

The trials and executions here predated the more famous Salem witch panic by over 40 years.

Fresh on the heels of their a cappella camp for kids, Westport musicians Danielle Merlis and Robert Kwan have organized a group of adulsts.

Aimed at people who love to sing, learn music and connect with others, A Cappella Central is for you.

All are welcome: former college singers, seasoned musicians, those who have not sung in years, and anyone brand new but eager to try.

At least once a week, someone sends a photo of an eagle perched atop the communication tower by the Westport Police station.

Look! they say. How cool is this?!

It would be more cool if it were an actual eagle.

Unfortunately, it’s a decoy. It’s there — and has been for months, if not years — to keep other birds from flocking to the equipment.

Judith Katz was the latest reader to excitedly send in that photo.

During Wednesday’s Conservation Commission hearing, members prudently chose to continue the review until October rather than vote on the application, for which the surrounding community is grateful.

A proposal of this scale and sensitivity deserves a dedicated hearing. It is difficult for both the Commission and the public to adequately consider such a complex application after hours of reviewing important but perhaps less consequential matters.

Wednesday evening’s presentation by the applicant’s team of professionals was impressive, visually compelling, and optimistic.

However, it also appeared to lack details that warrant further examination.

Several aspects of the proposal were presented, including but not limited to green spaces, walkways, plantings, water management and maintenance plans.

But it failed to elaborate on the true scale of the proposal in more detail — for example, number of units, coverage comparison and parking, under the rationale that they fall outside the Conservation Commission’s purview.

While that may be technically correct, some of these issues have significant implications for stormwater management, impervious coverage, and environmental impacts, all of which are directly relevant to conservation concerns and fall under the Commission’s oversight, in addition to the Commission’s request for a side-by-side comparison.

During the presentation, a consulting engineer stated that the property did not experience what was characterized as complete flooding during the recent 200-year storm event, contrary to the image below with a vehicle partially submerged in floodwaters.

Respectfully, it begs the question of what standard is used to define complete flooding. By any reasonable measure, substantial portions of the property, both above and below grade, were underwater.

The parking garage appeared to have flooded, roadways providing access to and from the property were inundated, and adjacent wetlands overflowed significantly, breaching abutting properties.

This was one for the record books — but will it be the last one?

Last Sunday’s flood, at 55-57 Greens Farms Road.

Equally concerning are the effects on neighboring properties. At least one concerned resident bordering the wetlands observed water levels extending well beyond that area. One would argue that these conditions constitute extensive flooding, and should be acknowledged when evaluating future development impacts.

Although parking may not fall directly under the Conservation Commission’s jurisdiction, impervious coverage and land disturbance certainly do. The proposal contemplates accommodating all required parking beneath the building footprint, rather than in traditional surface lots.

On paper, this is an attractive concept. However, can the required parking be fully accommodated under the building footprint as proposed? It doesn’t take long to understand the true scale of the proposal.

On the site plan provided by the developing team, as part of the meeting materials, you can see the existing back building that is planned to remain, at least for now, next to the new proposed larger building, shown in beige with pale green donut holes representing courtyards within the building. The 2 existing buildings are identical in size; the proposal is far from it.

The question is not what’s under the Commission’s purview, but whether safeguards should be established now as the proposal is further detailed. Should the final site plan design deviate from the proposal as it moves through other agency approvals, no modifications should be granted without a comprehensive public review process, including notice and hearing requirements.

Too often, substantial project modifications occur later in the approval process when public scrutiny has diminished. If or when the development proceeds, all of Westport deserves assurance that future changes will not undermine the environmental commitments being presented today.

The broader environmental impacts of this development also deserve careful consideration. The proposal includes extensive native plantings, pollinator habitats, and attractive landscape features. While these elements are commendable, they do not eliminate the significant ecological disruption associated with large-scale construction.

Construction activity remains a major source of environmental disturbance through habitat fragmentation, waste generation, erosion, sedimentation, and impacts to surrounding ecosystems, particularly where wetlands are involved, even with protections in place.

Could the Sherwood Mill Pond watershed basin also be impacted, as it is connected through smaller waterways? Adaptive reuse rather than a redevelopment may not be appropriate here, but it provides many lessons not to be ignored.

The development team also referenced future maintenance plans intended to preserve the property’s environmental performance. Such plans are encouraging in theory, but they ultimately rely on consistent implementation and enforcement.

Who will ensure compliance years after approvals have been granted, construction has been completed, and the dust has settled?

Another voiced concern during the hearing: The town’s resources for monitoring private properties are limited. The site’s existing office park likely had maintenance obligations, yet residents have witnessed years of neglect, including recurring litter and debris entering the watershed from adjacent roadways and highways, using the roadway as a trash conveyor belt.

Another point articulated at the hearing: Many times, it is the residents who volunteer to go up and down this stretch of road and collect the garbage. A high-density development will only add to the problem.

A redevelopment could be inevitable; the owners have made a substantial financial investment and intend to seek a reasonable return, but at what expense?

The objective is not to prevent development (although it would be ideal), but to ensure that it receives even more rigorous scrutiny such a consequential project deserves.

We have not even touched on the traffic this will create on an already overwhelmed road, not to mention the everlasting debate about what will happen to the beloved Cribari Bridge once it’s further overwhelmed and likely becomes structurally inadequate.

This section of Westport may appear as the forgotten land, but it is home to families, many of whom have lived here for generations. They have repeatedly dealt with flooding due to poor upkeep of the waterways, never-ending traffic, and are bracing for additional impact. But they are hopeful for some reprieve.

Perhaps the new development will, in fact, improve the water management capability of the property and be a positive addition to the community.

But at the moment, the facts and scale are not feeding much confidence or conviction to those who will be impacted the most. Rest assured, the ripple effects of this not-so-small pebble in the pond will be felt far beyond the adjoining properties.

And not just because it’s an easy-to-park-it, always-uncrowded alternative to the always-busy Playhouse Square location.

Locked doors meant people with PO boxes could not access them.

Now, a note alerts all box holders to knock on the side door. Postmaster Suzannie Swaine will hand you your mail.

The building suffered serious damage. At the height of the storm, the interior was inundated with up to 5 inches of water. In nearly 25 years at Green’s Farms, Swaine had never seen that.

She and a fellow postal worker spent Monday and Tuesday cleaning up, and throwing away water-damaged materials. Not a single piece of mail was lost.

A postal technician was scheduled to reset or replace the server that works the computerized mail and postage equipment. Until that is done, the branch is closed to walk-in traffic.

Box holders may get their mail weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

Yesterday, Department of Public Works director Larry Roberts addressed concerns of Compo Beach neighborhood residents that check valves and pumps might not have worked as intendent, during Sunday’s 7-inch “rain bomb.”

He said that DPW is also reviewing reports of lingering standing water near Bradley Street and Fairfield Avenue, and debris in nearby drainage structures.

A homeowner on nearby Norwalk Avenue — one of 4 roads between Soundview Drive and Bradley Street — wants to make sure that town officials know about their plight too.

He writes: “The drains in front of 6 Norwalk have backed up several times this summer, even before this most recent storm.

“I’ve been in contact with the town engineer. He assured me everything operated as intended, but I want to be sure the right town officials are aware that the marina pump situation responsible for the drains on our street should be evaluated as well.”

Westport resident Meredith Gerard is a sepsis survivor.

She has worked hard to bring more awareness to the life-threatening medical emergency: knowing the signs, understanding how quickly it can happen, and the importance of getting treatment fast.

Her advocacy to get the state to recognize September as Sepsis Awareness Month has paid off.

Locally, Westport declared September 14 Sepsis Awareness Day. 1st Selectman Kevin Christie presented the proclamation to Meredith and and her family at Town Hall.

The effects of sepsis did not end when she left the hospital. It has had a lasting impact on me and my family over the past several years. She is proud that her children see that when something difficult happens, it can turn into an experience that helps others.

Among the signs of sepsis:

• Fever above 100.4°F, or body temperature below 96.5°F.
• Signs or symptoms of a current infection (like a cough, painful urination, or a red wound).
• Mental Decline: Extreme confusion, sleepiness, or trouble waking up.
• Extremely Ill: Severe pain, shortness of breath, or a feeling like you might die.

Ruff to Radiant is a mobile pet grooming service in Fairfield and New Haven Counties.

The other day Katie, the owner, was working with a dog named Stella. When Katie was done, Stella ran into her back yard.

She fell into a pool, and was drowning.

When the owner jumped in and got her out, she was not breathing. Katie laid her on the driveway, and performed chest compressions and “mouth to snout” CPR.

Within a minute, she regained her pulse.

Stella was taken to the vet. She went home that day, with oxygen and a heating blanket.

“It was cleaning and filling cracks in the road with tar. Then another worker put some sand or other abrasive on top of the tar to give it some traction.

After 3 years they’re concentrating on their other restaurants, including a new one in Darien. 

Several “06880” commenters questioned whether any operator can succeed at the 107-year-old beach neighborhood location. 

Jim Hood and Ian Warburg say they can. 

As 2 of the principals of Soundview Empowerment Alliance — the owners of the property — they write:

There has been a lot of thoughtful discussion since Dan’s post about the transition at Old Mill Grocery & Deli. We thought it might be helpful to add a little history and context, particularly around the question of whether a business can succeed at 222 Hillspoint Road.

We believe it can, and the history gives us good reason to feel that way.

Elvira’s was profitable for more than 2 decades. It supported Stacy and Nick, their family and employees, and helped them build meaningful equity in the property.

When they sold in 2019, it wasn’t because the business had failed. They were ready to retire after many years of extraordinarily hard work.

Nicky and Stacey Yiovanakos at their familiar spot. Under their ownership, Elvira’s was profitable.

Romanacci has also been profitable at Old Mill.

Their decision to move on doesn’t mean a business can’t succeed here. It simply means that, for a growing company with several locations and other opportunities, the return at Old Mill hasn’t been enough to justify the considerable time and attention the location requires.

That’s an important distinction.

The last several years have also brought challenges that earlier operators didn’t face to the same degree. Unfortunate legal disputes consumed a great deal of time, money and energy that otherwise could have gone into improving and growing the business.

But there is another side to that story.

Thousands of residents, neighbors and visitors have supported preserving Old Mill. Many hundreds contributed financially to save it back in 2022.

And many more continue to show, through their ongoing donations, patronage and affection for the place, how much they want this neighborhood institution to remain part of the community.

It’s also worth remembering what this place has been for more than a century.

The property has operated commercially since 1919. For generations, it wasn’t simply a place to buy a sandwich.

Old Mill Grocery has stood — and served — for over 100 years.

It was opened as The Old Mill Store, and soon after became The Old Mill Grocery & Deli, always a place for groceries, prepared food, beverages, ice cream and the everyday things people needed. Stopping there was simply part of living in the neighborhood.

Some of that habit has been lost over the years. COVID changed routines. The neighborhood changed. Delivery services changed the way all of us buy food and household necessities.

Those are real challenges. But we don’t think they mean a business there is no longer viable.

We think the opportunity is to create an updated version of the neighborhood market that worked here for generations: great prepared food, groceries, beverages, convenience items and other permitted offerings, with reasons for people to stop in throughout the day and throughout the year.

There is also one very important difference between Old Mill and most commercial properties.

Its owner, Soundview Empowerment Alliance, is a nonprofit.

SEA was created by this community for 2 purposes: to preserve this historic neighborhood institution, and to create opportunities for young people with disabilities.

“Preserving History. Serving Good.”

SEA didn’t acquire 222 Hillspoint Road as a real estate investment. And our goal isn’t to maximize the financial return on the property.

We measure success differently.

If Old Mill remains a thriving neighborhood gathering place, and if it also creates opportunities for young people with disabilities to learn, work and grow, then we are accomplishing what the community created SEA to do.

That matters economically as well.

We can offer the next operator a modest, commercially reasonable rent designed to help the business succeed, rather than trying to extract the maximum possible return from the real estate.

So for us, the question isn’t really whether Old Mill can work.

It’s whether we can find the next right operator to create the 2026 version of the neighborhood market Westport has embraced for more than a century, one that respects what this place has been while adapting to the way people live today.

Based on the history of the property, what we’ve learned over the last several years, and the conversations we’re having with prospective operators, we believe we can.

We’re not out to recreate Elvira’s, or Kenny’s before it.

Our aim is to support the next generation of operators of the Old Mill Grocery & Deli, enabling it to remain the special place – the heart and hub – this community will continue to embrace for decades to come.

The Jesup Road bridge at Imperial Avenue remains closed, while engineers assess significant storm damage and required repairs. Assessments of roads, culverts, storm drains and stormwater facilities also continue.

“We understand the distress that comes with damage to a home or business, and residents deserve a clear understanding of what our stormwater infrastructure can handle,” says director of Public Works Larry Roberts.

“Even as we assess this extraordinary storm, repeated flooding makes preparing for future events essential. We will continue to work to strengthen public infrastructure, and work with property owners on practical ways to reduce future damage.”

On Sunday, the wastewater treatment plant’s inflow peaked at a rate of approximately 12 million gallons per day — far above its usual 1.75 million per day.

Pump Station No. 10 (behind HomeGoods) flooded and shut down. The Center Street pump station sustained damage when Muddy Brook overflowed.

Town teams are assessing culverts and drainage structures affected by sediment, landscaping material, displaced dumpsters and other debris, including whether obstructions affected drainage in particular locations.

Follow-up work includes clearing obstructions, cleaning catch basins and checking equipment.

In Compo Basin, DPW reports that the marina’s check valves are operational.

The Gray’s Creek valve was open as intended; it prevents tidal flooding, and closing it during this low-tide rainfall event would not have helped drainage, officials say.

DPW has inspected the basin’s automatic pump and found it operational. However, officials cannot verify its operation during the storm because it does not record activation history.

DPW plans to observe the pump during the next major storm to verify its activation. DPW is also reviewing reports of lingering standing water near Bradley Street and Fairfield Avenue, and debris in nearby drainage structures.

Town officials are coordinating with state emergency management officials on regional impacts, damage documentation and potential recovery resources.

Residents and businesses should report September 13 property damage through the State’s CrisisTrack survey. Reports help document the full extent of damage, and support the process of determining whether the state may be eligible for FEMA or Small Business Administration disaster programs. The survey is not a claim or application for assistance, does not guarantee aid and does not replace reporting damage to an insurer.

Christie says, “Our hearts go out to the residents and businesses recovering from this flood, including those displaced from their homes or unable to reopen their businesses.

How free and fair will it be?

The Brennan Center for Justice is working hard to ensure complete freedom and fairness.

The non-profit — inspired by Justice William Brennan’s devotion to democratic freedoms — does not get headlines. But the New York University School of Law-based organization works hard, behind the scenes, to protect elections, counter abuse of presidential power, and encourage transformative ideas that power change.

Their activities include research, publishing, advocacy and impact litigation.

A couple of small events have introduced the Brennan Center to Westporters.

On October 1 (5 to 7 p.m., Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Westport), a larger “friend fundraiser” will raise their profile locally.

The Board of Assessment Appeals meets on September 23 (6 to 7 p.m., Town Hall lobby).

They’ll hear appeals for the 2025 Grand List. You must bring the vehicle you’re appealing. (Not all the way inside, obviously).

We have no idea what Briggs Cunningham’s C-3 Cabriolet — which he designed himself, seen here at his former Beachside Avenue home — was assessed at in the 1950s. Nor what the assessment is today. We’re guessing a lot: Only 36 were ever built.

The Westport Country Playhouse is 95 years young.

They’ll celebrate their almost-century milestone on October 3, at a gala filled with (of course) Broadway talent.

StartUp Westport’s first-ever Pitch Competition last year was a winner — and not just for the wheels marketplace platform that won the $20,000 first prize.

Over 75 hopefuls applied. Five were chosen as semi-finalists. For months they honed their ideas, and were mentored by StartUp Westport volunteers.

The energy was sky high at the Westport Library, for the final pitches.

The second Pitch Competition is November 19 (6 p.m., Library). The start-ups are hard at work. Who will make it to the stage?

Westport Police made 3 custodial arrests between September 9 and 15.

A 25-year-old Rahway, New Jersey man was charged with identity theft, forgery, larceny and unlawful possession of a personal identifying information access device, following an investigation into check fraud at Maplewood Senior Living. He was held on a $75,000 bond.

A 31-year-old Bridgeport man was charged with assault, interfering with an officer and breach of peace, following an assault, with fists and neck pressure, in a vehicle at the Wheels gas station. The man walked away from the scene, but was tracked by a canine to the Sherwood Island commuter parking lot. He was released on a $10,000 bond.

A 44-year-old Norwalk man was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol/drugs, following a report that a vehicle had pulled into a Charcoal Hill Common driveway, and the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Officers responded, and found the vehicle traveling on the wrong side of the road, nearly hitting a police vehicle. He was released on a $500 bond.

Westport Police also issued these citations:

• Failure to renew registration: 3 citations
• Failure to comply with state traffic commission regulations: 2
• Failure to obey state traffic control signals: 2
• School zone violation: 1
• Texting while driving
• Improper passing: 1
• Unsafe movement of a stopped motor vehicle: 1
• Operating an unregistered motor vehicle: 1
• Operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance: 1
• Out-of-state plate violation: 1
• Littering on public property: 1.

At this year’s Soundview Stroll, Westport Cub Scout Pack 39 asked strollers: “What do you love about Westport?”

If a stroller took a moment to talk with a Cub Scout or Scouter, we asked them to help us discover the places that make Westport special.

We brought them over to a huge map, from the town’s Engineering Department. It includes every road, street, property lot, park, school and geographic feature in town.

Offering 6 different colored markers, we asked people to share: Green for your favorite place to explore nature. Blue for your favorite place to play. Yellow for your favorite place to eat. Purple for a favorite place to walk, bike, or hike. Orange for a place to have fun with your friends. And draw a red heart over “a place that makes you proud of Westport.”

Soundview Strollers of all ages took a moment to orient themselves on the map. In this age of Waze and GPS navigation, we learned that there are many young Westporters who have never looked at a paper map of their town.

Then there were directionally gifted people who thrilled at their fluency with maps, and the chance to help the lost find their way to their favorite places.

Our map came alive with color – dots and red hearts. Runners and bicyclists drew long purple lines for their regular routes. Students drew hearts over their pre-schools and elementary schools, and orange and blue dots over the playgrounds where they play and have fun with their friends.

Dots for “favorite place” to eat were hungrily drawn for Old Mill Grocery, Bartaco, Casa Me and the Black Duck (one of the most fun spots to find on the map – tracing the Saugatuck River until you’re just under “Interstate 95”).

Longshore, Old Mill Beach (with dots and hearts going all the way out to the sandbar!), Sherwood Island State Park and Burying Hill Beach – Westporters love to get outside.

Intrepid explorers put green dots on the Caryl & Edna Haskins Preserve and the Children’s Natural Playground at Schine Preserve – a couple of Westport’s hidden gems (great places to explore nature).

On our map, Compo Beach is chaotic with color. Multiple blue dots – favorite place to play – were turned into a smiley face by one clever contributor. Red hearts are all over the place (“A place that makes you proud of Westport”).

The Westport Rotary Club’s lobster — aka Rick Benson — chose Compo Beach as his favorite spot, presumably for LobsterFest. The annual event — a favorite of many residents — takes place Saturday.

Our Soundview Stroll map station was really a bit of intelligence gathering. What lights up people’s faces?

Kids love thinking about the places they play, explore nature, and have fun with their friends. Parents loved seeing the places their kids chose, and how they talked about them. The whole exercise was really about starting a conversation.

And we were listening!

When my husband Jim and I read on social media that the picnic tables on Parker Harding Plaza along the Saugatuck River were in disrepair, it occurred to us that they were the perfect gift to our town.

I remember when Lee Papageorge, the owner of Oscar’s Deli, placed them there many years ago.

I have been in town for 46 years, and Jim for 20. We raised our children here, and wanted to say thank you.

We contacted Maxx Crowley, executive director of the Westport Downtown Association, and shared our idea.

With the help of SCA and the WDA, we found the right benches. They should last many years.

Thank you to Maxx and his team for assembling the tables, removing the old ones and cleaning up the area.

We give these tables in honor of those we lost on 9/11. We love driving by and seeing people enjoying their lunch by the river.

Now they can do it without the fear of a massive splinter.

Shortly after 6:30 a.m. today, he emailed: “I saw this email from Sunday evening, but did not get back to you while we were still in active emergency response mode.

“We recognize the significant impact the flooding has had on residents and businesses throughout town. We have been looking into this as part of our broader post-flood assessment, and we’ll follow up when we have more complete information.”

More details on Sunday’s storm: Westport emergency responders handled 130 flood-related calls, rescued 13 people from vehicles, and evacuated 5 residents from a care facility.

Town officials continue working to document the extent of the damage to residences, businesses and public infrastructure.

“We recognize the disruption and damage this event has caused and sincerely thank Westport residents and businesses for their patience, cooperation and understanding,” says 1st Selectman Kevin Christie.

“We are incredibly grateful to our first responders, Public Works crews, emergency dispatchers, utility workers, volunteers and everyone who worked tirelessly to protect our community and begin the recovery process.”

Flood waters have receded. Damage assessments continue.

Michael Roth, president of Wesleyan University; Rajiv Vinnakota, president of Citizens & Scholars, and Daniel Lugo, president of Trinity College, are part of a national effort, involving more than 140 college leaders. They focus on preparing the next generation for active participation in our democracy.

Speaking of the Library: Monday marked the dedication of its newest sculpture.

“Circle of Peace” has been drawing plenty of attention, outside the upper level entrance.

The work was donated to Westport’s Public Art Collections by an anonymous donor. It was installed at Save the Children headquarters, until the organization left Westport in 2014.

Triple Threat Academy students Sophie Goldman, Carlos Velasquez Escamilla and Camilo Velasquez Escamilla cut the ribbon. The brief ceremony ended with children singing “Song of Peace.”

Speaking still of the Library: You can’t always get what you want.

But if you want to learn about the Rolling Stones, that was the place to be last night.

Former Rolling Stone (the magazine) writer Alec Foege and author Bob Spits talked about Spitz’s boo “The Rolling Stones: The Biography.”

They discussed music, fame, and the world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll band.

The only bummer: Keith Richards did not wander down from Weston to offer his thoughts.

A sign on the door yesterday said they were closed, due to a power outage. Patrons were advised to use the Westport, Southport or Fairfield post offices.

If you have a PO box there though, you were out of luck.

And there’s no information either on how long the much-loved branch will be shut.

They’ve opened a local location, at 1555 Post Road East. That’s right next to Sherpa, Longevity, and Zion Physical Therapy + CT Sports Recovery.

This Saturday (September 19, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), they’re throwing an open house.

Guests can see the new home; have a sweat and/or plunge, and enjoy the wellness community that KiiN has joined.

They embarked on a worldwide tour.

One Westport family needs a place to live, and start over.

 A GoFundMe page says: 

If you know Lindsay, you know her as the mom every kid wishes was theirs, the one who is first to say yes to a carpool, and whose house is always open for an impromptu get-together.

Most of all, Lindsay is the mom who always puts her two sons, Myles (13) and Charlie (11), first, no matter what.

Today, after Westport’s worst flood in over 200 years, Lindsay and her boys are facing an unimaginable and catastrophic loss. In the last 24 hours, the home that had become a source of comfort and stability for their family became unlivable, their contents and keepsakes were destroyed, and they also lost their car. After everything this family has already been through, this disaster has turned their world upside down once again.

Myles and Charlie, in 8th and 6th grade at Bedford Middle School, are deeply loved in this community, and so is their mom. So many people know how much this home meant to them as a safe place to heal and rebuild, which makes this loss even more heartbreaking.

This fundraiser will help Lindsay, Myles, and Charlie get through the aftermath of the flood by covering immediate needs and expenses as they figure out next steps.

Among the hardest hit neighborhoods: Compo Beach. Homeowners on Soundview Drive, the 4 side roads and Bradley Street are used to storms. Many have recently raised their structures.

But this time was different. The drains that typically overflow — but eventually carry water away — may not have worked.

As water coursed through his home, a resident emailed 2 of his Representative Town Meeting members, Kristin Mott Purcell and Chris Tait. He copied “06880.” He wrote:

High tide was nearly 4 hours ago. The flood waters have receded exactly 2 inches since then.

I know, because it is very easy to mark the water levels on our (and our neighbors’) garage doors.

When storm drains are clear, and the drain pipe “flaps” and pumps are working at Compo Basin, water pours into the storm drains with a vengeance after a flood event like this.

It is easy to see the “vortex funnels” above every storm drain, even if the water is 2 or 3 feet deep. And the water dissipates very quickly.

There is no vortex above the storm drains tonight. The water has nowhere to go.

I will give you 10-to-1 odds we will find out the town did not open the floodgates at the marina or Gray’s Creek. They probably also did not turn on the pump that helps move out the water.

Fairfield Avenue, after the storm passed. Water at one point was 3 feet deep, a neighbor says.

The town is not responsible for freakish, heavy rainfalls or the sudden accumulation that results from them. But we surely should have a drainage system that suits one of the wealthiest towns in the country, and that has experienced this problem time and again over the past few decades.

I want to work with both of you to get to the bottom of this issue this week. We have sustained a massive amount of damage, much of which could have been avoided or minimized, if we could have gotten the water out of our house quickly.

Instead, it has been nearly 9 hours that we have had more than a foot of water inside our living spaces. That is unacceptable.

“06880” spoke with RTM member Chris Tait yesterday. He says:

“I talked to (Public Works director) Larry Roberts. He told me the pumps were running, but the rain backed up the system. They’re 12-inch pumps, that work over a 24-hour period. Not right away.”

Tait says Roberts told him that standing water on Bradley Street — visible Monday — was caused by debris clogging the pipes.

The RTM member will meet with DPW engineers, to see whether a drain by the Minute Man monument — broken several years ago — was fixed properly.

Compo Beach resident Jim Hood insists, “It doesn’t add up.”

He says he stood on top of a storm drain during the storm, and could not see “even a ripple. If water was going down even slowly, I’d see it. For 7 or 8 hours, there was nothing.

“Then suddenly, it went down quickly. It defies the laws of physics.”

“06880” reached out to 1st Selectman Kevin Christie for comment. As of last night, he had not responded.
