The complex question of free speech has roiled college campuses.

On November 10 (7 p.m.), the Westport Library hosts someone in the heart of those debates.

Princeton University president and constitutional scholar Christopher Eisgruber will be in conversation with WSHU public policy reporter Molly Ingram.

In his new book “Terms of Respect: How Colleges Get Free Speech Right,” Eisgruber challenges the narrative that universities have lost their way on free expression.

Today’s students, he says, engage in vigorous discussions on sensitive topics, and embrace both the opportunity to learn and the right to protest — much like past generations.

The polarization and turmoil visible on many campuses, Eisgruber writes, reflect an American civic crisis that affects universities along with the rest of society. But rather than seeing colleges as part of the problem, he believes they can model how to embrace free speech without sacrificing the ideals of equality, diversity, and respect.

TEXT AMENDMENT GOAL: GREATER ADU FLEXIBILITY 

ADUs are back in the news.

On Monday (6 p.m., Zoom), the Planning & Zoning Commission will discuss a text amendment.

Two changes to the accessory-use regulations are aimed at providing greater flexibility for the construction and configuration of Accessory Dwelling Units and other related structures.

Amendment #880 would increase the maximum permitted height of an ADU constructed above a detached garage from 26 feet to 30 feet, and allow otherwise permitted accessory structures to be physically connected through shared walls or floor/ceiling assemblies.

The amendment would allow additional living space above a garage, without requiring an owner to sacrifice the garage itself.

FARMERS’ MARKET FEAST: staples cooking demos, food books for sale

The Westport Farmers’ Market continues outdoors, through November.

Special programming continues every Thursday too.

Next week is extra special. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Imperial Avenue parking lot), a pop-up event with Staples High School’s culinary classes and The Perfect Page book trailer offers live cooking demonstrations, inspired by great books.

Students will prepare and offer samples of recipes drawn from favorite cookbooks and food-centric novels. Books will be available for purchase.

“Great books have always been full of food, and cooking is its own kind of storytelling,” says Staples culinary teacher Cecily Gans.

“Our students are excited to share dishes inspired by the pages they love, and show the community the talent they’ve been developing.”

MANRESA ISLAND PLAN WINS ZONING OK

Manresa Island is in Norwalk.

But the 144-acre island can be seen clearly from Compo Beach. Its most prominent feature is a former coal and oil-burning power plant.

As “06880” reported last year, billionaires Austin and Allison McChord hve  vision for the desolate land. They hope to create a 25-acre park with trails, a canopy walk, a public beach, play spaces, boat rentals, a restaurant and a lawn for concerts.

The abandoned power plant would be remade into a large space with climbing walls, an indoor water park, food vendors, and environment educational center and flexible event space.

On Wednesday, CT Mirror reports, Norwalk’s Planning & Zoning Commission voted unanimously to approve a special zoning district for the proposed Manresa Wilds development.

That allows the McChords to continue finalizing their designs. More approvals, including traffic studies, are needed before construction begins.

kelli o’hara, tom hanks co-star on broadway

Kelli O’Hara is heading back to Broadway.

This time, she’ll star with Tom Hanks.

The Tony Award-winning actor and Westport resident will join the Academy Award winner in a a show he co-wrote. “This World of Tomorrow” opens next fall.

Hanks plays a scientist living in the late 21st century, where it is possible to time travel back to the past. He returns to June 8, 1939 at the New York World’s Fair, where he meets a woman — played by O’Hara — with whom he falls in love.

MILL POND PATH OPEN AGAIN

It took a while.

A long while.

But renovation of the tidal gates at Sherwood Mill Pond is done.

The footbridges and path leading from the Old Mill Beach parking lot to Compo Cove have been redone too.

WESTPORT SWIM CLUB: next session starts soon

Speaking of water: Westport Swim Club at Staples is a low-key, but very effective introduction to swimming for 1st through 8th graders. Their values are “fun, friends and fundamentals.”

Many youngsters go on to swim for Staples High School teams.

WSC’s winter session starts on November 16. Tryouts will be held over the next few weekends at the Staples pool.

There are 4 registrations each year: fall, winter, spring and summer. There are 5 practices a week (not mandatory to come to all 5). Flexibility is key, for young swimmers and their families.

More than 100 kids, parents, occasional riders, serious cyclists — even a town engineer — pedaled together at Walk Bike Westport’s first Bridge to Bridge Ride.

Every kind of Westporter was there. Every kind of bike, too.

City bikes, hybrids, road bikes, BMXs, mountain bikes, beach cruisers, bike trailers, trailercycles, cargo bikes, bikes with child seats attached — you name it, someone pedaled it.

The group started at Jesup Green, took the closed bridge detour through Bay Street onto Post Road, then headed down Imperial Avenue and Bridge Street.

They crossed the Cribari Bridge, rode north along Riverside Avenue, and finished back at Jesup Green.

Coming just days after the Board of Finance unanimously approved accepting nearly $900,000 in federal Safe Streets and Roads for All funding, the turnout reinforced something Walk Bike Westport believes strongly: Residents want more opportunities to walk and bike safely around town.

Our town is not alone. Similar movements are happening all over the country. Many are further along than Westport in creating safe, connected streets.

Before the ride Markus Marty, co-director of Walk Bike Westport, offered a brief safety talk about riding on public roads. Recently certified as a League of American Bicyclists instructor, he is now qualified to teach children and adults of all ages how to ride safely and confidently.

Chaz Foster of Sound Cyclists served as ride captain, leading the group alongside a Westport Police escort vehicle.

As they rode along, smiling and chatting, neighbors and passersby waved. It was a different way to experience Westport — on 2 wheels, not 4.

The final leg: Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge.

“It’s challenging at times to fit all of this into our lives, alongside our jobs, families, and everything else,” Markus and co-chair Jenna Petok say.

“But we feel strongly about doing our part for the community. We admire how so many Westporters have found their own ways to contribute to making this town a better place, and that’s inspiring to us.”

They hailed the community aspect of the event. Staples Swimming & Diving teams and the Westport Swim Club provided logistical support and volunteers.

That’s no coincidence. Walk Bike Westport and Westport Swim Club share a goal of helping youngsters build skills, confidence, and healthy habits. Staples High School swim coach Kuku Fleming and WSC coach Neil Markman also served as event directors.

Jack Thompson and Blake Serotta of the Westport Youth Commission were on hand too, advocating for e-bike safety.

The Westport Police Department, led by Lieutenant Sereneti Dobson and Staff Corporal Al D’Amura, helped organize the first- ever event. Traffic Agent Bob Bland and his team helped keep everyone safe along the route.

Sara Amaro from the first selectman’s office guided Walk Bike Westport through the permit process.

It took a ton of work to pull off the Bridge to Bridge ride. (Kudos to whoever was in charge of the weather, too.)

But the smiles, Markus and Jenna say, were worth it.

And, they add, this was just the beginning. Many more rides are in the works.

You’d think that 3 days later, the New York Daily News’ “Inquiring Fotographer” feature would ask about that nation-shaking event.

You’d be wrong.

The column — which paid $10 for each question used by readers — went ahead with their pre-planned query: “Is the average American afraid to take a chance today?”

That’s so vague. Afraid to take a chance on what?

As for “average American”:  inquiring “fotographer” Jimmy Jemail asked it in a decidedly unaverage place: Westport.

And he chose some far-from-average Westporters to answer it.

The first was Board of Education member Robert Anstett. The well-known attorney — later a town prosecutor — said: “Absolutely not, at least as far as Westport is concerned. Our citizens are willing to work hard in their careers and to provide the best schools for their children. They know real success is a combination of knowledge and the gumption to act when opportunity knocks.”

Police Chief Sam Luciano answered the question through his own profession’s lens: “Far too many risk their lives on the road by taking foolish chances.

Westport Woman’s Club president Mrs. George W. Patch — those were the days when women were identified by their husbands’ names — believed that while the average adult took chances, “many of our young adults are reluctant to start at the bottom and work up. For many, unfortunately, college is merely a means of landing a soft job at a good salary.”

And Lou Nistico, “restaurateur” — known, then and now, as owner of the legendary Arrow restaurant — said, “Yes. This attitude is nationwide. How do you expect people to act on their own initiative when the Administration is moving closer and closer to a welfare state? The average person feels what’s the use, the government takes most of our money.”

This week, Spinnaker announced plans to build 142 apartments in Saugatuck, on property bordered by Riverside Avenue, Railroad Place and Charles Street.

Ten percent of the units would be deed-restricted as affordable to families making up to 80% of the statewide median income.

Another 10% would be deed-restricted as “workforce housing.”

So what exactly is “workforce housing”? Who qualifies.

Michelle Perillie — director of the Westport Planning & Zoning Department — explains: “Section 5 of the Westport Zoning Regulations define Workforce Housing. The area median income this year is $156,800, so the maximum income for a family of 4 is $172,480 per year.”

How does one apply?

“The application process will be the same as for an affordable unit. (It) includes an income certification form…. There is also an applicant interview where income compliance is verified.”

Spinnaker’s plan has a long way to go before it is approved. Then, of course, comes construction.

It will be a while before anyone moves in, to either the affordable or market rate units.

CYBERSECURITY & EDUCATION COURSES PROPOSED AT STAPLES

Speaking of the Board of Education: Its Teaching & Learning Committee meets Tuesday (October 27, 1:30 p.m., Town Hall Rooms 201/201A).

The agenda includes 2 new courses proposed for Staples High School.

The Science Department hopes to introduce “AP Cybersecurity,” for students in grades 10-12.

The course would cover core security principles, risk assessment and ethical responsibilities; physical security and social engineering; network and device protection; and application and data security, including encryption, cloud security, and web vulnerabilities.

Students would apply these concepts to realistic workplace scenarios, analyzing vulnerabilities and developing security recommendations. The course would also address defensive uses of AI, emerging security risks, and data privacy standards.

The prerequisite would be AP Computer Science Principles or Intro to Programming.

The Social Studies Department proposes a new 1/2-credit Early College Experience course, “If You Love It, Teach It,” for students in grades 11-12 interested in exploring careers in K-12 education. The course would examine the historical and social foundations of education, and provide hands-on field observation opportunities in local elementary and middle schools.

“RIVER OF ROSES” TURNS SAUGATUCK PINK

Right on the heels of a 4th place finish at the Head of the Charles race last weekend, the Saugatuck Rowing Club is getting ready for tomorrow’s River of Roses.

The event (Saturday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), includes live music, great food, and — of course — the ceremonial scattering of 50,000 pink rose petals on the Saugatuck River.

The 9th annual event commemorates loved ones lost to breast cancer — and raises funds for survivors. After names are read aloud, the petals are swept out to sea.

Proceeds support SurviveOAR, the empowering, supportive community that provides mental, physical and emotional healing to women with breast cancer after traditional treatment ends.

This year’s River of Roses includes a naming ceremony of the Club’s beautiful pink rowing shell, in memory of beloved member Sarah Bianchi, who passed away last year.

WORLD PREMIERE AT WESTPORT COUNTRY PLAYHOUSE

As it’s done for 95 years, the Westport Country Playhouse continues to set the bar high.

And surpass it.

The historic theater kicks off the 2026-27 season with a world premiere. “Ken Ludwig’s Pride and Prejudice, Part 2:  Napoleon at Pemberley” — a stage sequel Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” runs from now through November 7.

The play picks up with Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy happily married at Pemberley. Then their world is upended by an unexpected house guest: Napoleon Bonaparte.

As the fallen emperor awaits exile, his presence ignites a revolution among the Darcys, and their colorful circle of friends and relations.

St. Luke fall festival ALL WEEKEND LONG

Fall into fun this weekend, at St. Luke Church’s Fall Festival.

The event (Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) includes kids’ activities, a “shabby chic boutique,” craft and outdoor vendors, kids’ closet, raffles.

The Compo Beach neighborhood is one of Westport’s most popular, for densely packed trick or treating. (Sorry, residents — I don’t think any readers didn’t know.)

Most residents get in the spirit — handing out hundreds of dollars worth of candy (and a few drinks for the parents), and decorating their homes appropriately.

It’s a great place.

That was one of the takeaways from Tuesday night’s first “In Good Company” event.

Sponsored by Stifel Investment Services and the Westport Downtown Association, it was the initial outside event held at hi’Amba, the buzzy new restaurant/market on Jesup Road.

Three rock star panelists — hi’Amba and Kawa Ni restaurateur Bill Taibe, PopUp Bagels founder Adam Goldberg, and Savvy + Grace owner Annette Norton — shared their success.

And their struggles.

The former far outweighed the latter. All gave great props to local officials they’ve worked with, like 1st Selectman Jim Marpe, for creating a business-friendly environment.

They offered equal praise to the town itself. Residents support small businesses that reach out and treat them well, they said.

And the mix of sharp, creative and energetic Westporters spurs owners to innovate and grow.

Panelists’ stories revealed common themes that apply to businesses of all sizes and stages. Among them:

• Ask for help, and choose your advisors carefully. Trusted relationships matter. Knowing who to call can be as valuable as having the answer yourself. Goldberg cited help from Taibe, for example, in the days when he and a few friends were making their first bagels by hand.
• Be good to the people around you. Employees, customers, neighboring businesses and community partners all play a role in long-term success.
• Build a strong team and lead by example. Culture starts at the top. Great leaders are willing to do the work they ask of others.
• Difficult times reveal real support. COVID was a particularly difficult time. In the weeks when Westport completely shut down, customers gave Norton a $5,000 check. Marpe shopped there often, buying gift certificates. That, and similar support by others, enabled her to stay open — and ultimately thrive.
• Prove profitability before pursuing scale. Growth is most sustainable when built on a solid foundation. PopUp Bagels now has dozens of locations. in over 20 states. They’ve outgrown their slogan, “Not famous, but known.” That growth followed initial success, selling the product from a leased kitchen. It was not what Goldberg set out to do, but he took each step carefully.
• Approach equal partnerships thoughtfully. A 50/50 partnership may appear balanced, but it led to one of Taibe’s first failures. Success often depends on having a plan for resolving disagreements.
• Understand what makes Westport unique. Success here requires appreciating the character, people and culture of the community.
• Recognize the power of collective action. Business owners working together can have a meaningful impact on the community.

For me as moderator, one of the most interesting takeaways was the recognition that, as Westport changes — with new residents pouring in from (often) New York and Brooklyn, and younger families joining older ones — an exciting vibe makes this one of the most attractive communities around.

Our restaurant scene rocks. Taibe’s newest venture is a smash. But he welcomes competition. It makes him work harder and better — and everyone benefits.

We may look nostalgically on the mom-and-pop shops we’ve lost. There will always be a place though for a place like Savvy + Grace. Amazon is a difficult competitor, Norton acknowledged. But her personal touch, and unique knowledge of what Westport customers want, is impossible to duplicate.

And PopUp Bagels is just one example of the startup entrepreneurial culture that is everywhere in town.

From individuals and couples starting businesses in their home offices (and kitchens), to a few collaborating on new ideas — leveraging market knowledge, AI and intuition to build companies that solve old problems, create new niches or take us in directions we didn’t know we wanted to go — Westport is in a great spot.

We are “In Good Company” for sure.

I am writing to provide an update regarding police activity along Long Lots Road this morning that led Staples High School and Bedford Middle School to activate the district’s security protocol and place both buildings in temporary holds.

Shortly before 8 a.m., the Westport Police Department received reports of a man acting erratically and yelling at vehicles in the area of Long Lots Road. In response, police officers, including multiple members of the department’s School Security Unit, acted quickly to assess the situation and identify the individual.

Through their coordinated efforts and ongoing communication with school administrators, the situation was addressed, and both schools were able to return to normal operations.

We understand that any situation requiring the activation of our school security protocols can be concerning for students, staff, and families. Please know that these protocols are in place to help protect our school communities, and decisions to implement them are made with careful consideration of the information available at the time.

This morning’s response demonstrated the importance of our strong partnership with the Westport Police Department and the constant communication between law enforcement and school administrators. That coordination allowed us to respond promptly, take appropriate precautions, and return both schools to normal operations as quickly as possible.

The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. We are grateful to the Westport Police Department and our school security personnel for their swift response and continued partnership in keeping our schools safe.

Even so, Dylan Diamond stands out.

The co-founder and CEO of Saturn —  the wildly successful calendar app for high school and college students, which raised $44 million in a 2021 funding round, before its acquisition by Snap — was also Tesla’s youngest intern.

He’s still only in his mid-20s.

WESTPORT MOMS’ FALL FESTIVAL SET FOR SATURDAY FUN

Fine weather is forecast for this Saturday’s WestportMoms’ 6th annual Fall Festival.

The event (October 24, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Gilbertie’s Herbs & Garden Center) is one of the town’s family friendliest autumn activities.

There’s a DJ, mini music classes, face painting, a bubble show, ninja wall, sports games, costume contest, Halloween crafts, cookie and pumpkin decorating, food trucks and more.

Kids can also meet Skye and Chase from PAW Patrol, and families will receive a special gift from Melissa & Doug (while available).

KIDS’ HALLOWEEN PARADE TAKES OVER MAIN STREET

Westport’s annual, much anticipated, and fun-but-not-too scary Halloween Parade strolls down Main Street next Wednesday (October 28, 3:30 p.m.). It begins at the Post Road East corner.

The event — specially geared for children 8 and under — is co-sponsored by the Parks & Recreation Department, Downtown Merchants Association and Westport PAL.

From Main Street, the parade turns right on Avery Place, then left on Myrtle Avenue. Youngsters may trick or treat along the route, and on Veterans Green. Entertainment, refreshments and small gifts will be provided there, at 4 p.m.

There is no parking along the route, from 2 to 4 p.m. Vehicular and pedestrian access to Town Hall will remain available for anyone voting early in the auditorium.

MEET JEFF O’LANTERN — JACK’S YOUNGER BROTHER

Speaking of Halloween: Westport author Charlie Greenwald will read from his new children’s book, Jeff O’Lantern. He’ll also sign copies for young trick-or-treaters.

The event is this Sunday (October 25, 1 p.m., Barnes & Noble).

Aimed at kindergartners through 2nd graders it’s a “funny, heartwarming picture book about a shy little pumpkin.” (Jeff O’Lantern — Jack’s younger brother — is not quite as spooky.)

Readers can discover that being shy or gentle is not a weakness. and that kindness can be its own kind of bravery.

Kids will love the pumpkin hero — and learn about confidence and finding their own strengths.

Halloween is not the only holiday this month.

Tomorrow (Friday, October 23, 3:15 p.m., Town Hall), Westport celebrates the founding of the United Nations 81 years ago, on October 24, 1945.

First Selectman Kevin Christie will issue a proclamation, followed by brief statements on critical global issues by members of the Staples High School Model UN Club.

There will be a special message from the UN Secretary- General and a flag raising ceremony too. The public is invited.

From tomorrow through Monday, the flags of many UN member countries will fly on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge downtown.

public dock nears completion

A large barge moved through the open Cribari Bridge yesterday, on its way up the Saugatuck River.

There, work continued on the public dock at Arezzo restaurant.

It’s getting closer to completion, adding one more amenity to downtown.

And one more reason to get moving on that long-delayed dredging project.

focus grOUps focus on stars

Serena Diamond is a Staples High School junior. But the teenagers has already spend many years study astronomy, and working at and with the Westport Astronomical Society.

Now she’s searching the skies — or at least Westport — for ways to involve more young people in the very cool, but way under the radar institution.

Serena is researching how the observatory can better serve local youth and families.

She has organized 2 focus groups for this Saturday (October 24). Students, and at least one parent, are invited to discuss programs, events and experiences. Frequent visitors and first-times are all welcome.

This Saturday’s sessions are 2 to 3 p.m. (grades 3-6), and 4 to 5 p.m. (grades 7-9). Both take place at the Westport Observatory, 182 Bayberry Lane.

POLICE REPORTS

Westport Police made 3 custodial arrests between October 14 and 20.

A 28-year-old Port Chester, New York man was charged with harassment, assault, criminal attempt to commit assault, threatening, reckless endangerment and kidnapping, following a complaint by a victim who had recently ended a relationship with the man. Over several days via telephone and threat, he threatened to kill the victim. The victim eventually agree to meet him, and got into his vehicle. He drove erratically throughout Westport. When the victim attempted to get out, he struck and restrained the victim. He continued to drive throughout the assault, and struck a guardrail while attempting to get on I-95 at Exit 17. At that point the victim fled, but he allegedly began driving at the victim. He was held on a $500,000 bond.

A 26-year-old Plainsboro, New Jersey woman was charged with identity theft and illegal possession of a personal identifying information device, following a report of a fraudulent bank withdrawal. She was released on a $75,000 bond.

A 49-year-old  Fairfield man was charged with harassment, for emailing and texting the victim despite being warned to cease all contact. He was released on a $25,000 bond.

She earned a BFA in acting at Virginia Commonwealth University, then moved to Chicago and Los Angeles.

But with her Italian and Panamanian background, she says, she was pigeonholed as “the maid or nanny.”

Disheartened, she told her story to Nick Sadler, the actor she was dating. (And, since 2003, her husband.)

He encouraged her to write it down.

She realized that — based on her years spent learning dialogue — she had an ear for it.

Gigi New

Gigi landed a job as a personal assistant on “Everybody Loves Raymond.” On the set, she watched how scenes were put together. That led to work as a writer for Nickelodeon. She then developed film and television projects with Killer Films, AGC and Lifetime.

Writers often critique other writers’ work. Gigi realized she had a talent for that too.

Gradually, she turned a side hustle — teaching writing — into a full-time gig.

In 2016 Gigi, Nick and their son Cooper moved to Connecticut. Nick had been in the cast of “All the Queen’s Men” at the Westport Country Playhouse, and loved the town.

Cooper joined Staples Players; he’s now a junior at NYU Tisch School of the Arts.

Gigi set up an office in an old caboose, set in the woods off Newtown Turnpike, between the Country Store and Bette Davis’ old house. (That’s a story in itself; click here to read.)

Gigi taught at the Westport Writers’ Workshop. Word of mouth grew. She branched out.

The result: New Way Writer (get it?). It’s a one-stop shop for aspiring and professional television and film writers. Services include personal consultation, online classes, special workshops, and work with film school applicants, plus high school and middle school students.

She helps analyze scripts and explore ideas. She also consults on projects.

Workshop topics include story fundamentals, creating a character or series, finding your voice, and writing a pilot.

It sounds straightforward. But Gigi wants clients to dig deep. “Everyone has a story. I always ask, ‘Why are you the one to tell this story?'” she says.

“Things pour out from there. We begin with the emotional side of storytelling.”

Feelings are key. “You have to put yourself into your writing,” she says. “Lean into the mess — because life is messy.” She helps writers understand “how your character can grow out of this mess.”

Writers grow as well, finding stories inside themselves that are “scratching to get out.”

Gigi grows too. “The process of teaching makes me a better writer,” she notes.

Some writers want a single conversation, in which Gigi critiques their work. Others work with her in 4- or 6-week blocks.

Success can be measured in many ways. One student recently won the Nantucket Film Festival — and with it a chance for meetings in Los Angeles with studios and agents.

Another just sold a script.

For some writers though, success means the satisfaction of putting ideas on paper, and molding them into a script.

Every client is different. (They’re in different places, too, from New York and Atlanta to Dallas and San Francisco. Gigi works primarily by Zoom.)

With some, she speaks “script shorthand.” With others, she patiently explores every angle and possibility.

High school students are especially exciting. “Their minds are so open and fertile,” Gigi says. “Anything goes!” Teenagers get a special discount rate.

Gigi New is not the actor she once thought she’d be.

But her journey might make an interesting film or TV show.

Jennifer Ruspini’s Above Saugatuck offers a chance to “step away from the noise. Say hello to the neighbor you have not had time to meet. Move gently. Enjoy the morning without pressure, a sales pitch, or a crowded room.”

The most recent one was scheduled for this past Saturday morning. A dozen or so people were ready.

But the weather forecast seemed too cold for the rooftop.

She headed to Dandelion, the popular restaurant in the Delamar Westport hotel.

The manager knows Jennifer. “Your community got a nice writeup in ‘06880!'” she noted.

“That’s what I need to talk to you about,” Jennifer said.

Within minutes, Dandelion had agreed to host the event indoors.

And the room, coffee, pastries — all were complimentary.

“They loved the idea of having something like Above Saugatuck in Westport,” Jennifer says — even if it as the opposite end of town.

“This is what a community gathering is all about: People coming together and helping each other,” Jennifer says.

Kudos to her, for creating such an interesting, unique space.

And a big shout-out to Dandelion and the Delamar for helping out, when Jennifer and her guests had to come in from the cold.

Yesterday, the Westport Police Department responded to multiple reports of mail stolen overnight from mailboxes, and discarded in several neighborhoods.

Areas include Hillspoint Road, Prospect Road, Greens Farms Road and Compo Beach area.

Police suspect that thieves were seeking items of value and checks, credit cards, etc.

Residents can help reduce opportunities for theft by:

• Retrieving mail and packages as soon as possible after delivery.
• Arranging for a trusted neighbor to collect deliveries when away from home.
• Using secure delivery locations, parcel lockers or signature confirmation when available.
• Signing up for delivery notifications, and tracking expected packages.
• Hand delivering any outgoing mail containing checks or sensitive information directly to a post office facility.
• Arranging for a mail hold when traveling.
• Installing security cameras or video doorbells to help monitor delivery areas.
• Reporting suspicious activity around mailboxes, mailrooms, and residential properties.

If you believe your mail or a package has been stolen, report the incident and provide tracking information, delivery confirmations, photographs or video footage.

Residents should also notify the delivery carrier or postal service and contact the sender or retailer regarding missing shipments.

Anyone with information about these incidents should call the WPD: 203-341-6000.

PARKS & REC WINTER PROGRAM REGISTRATION BEGINS

WAKEMAN, PJ ROMANO LIGHTS: CLARIFICATION

Yesterday, “06880” reported that the Planning & Zoning Commission voted 4-1 on Tuesday to allow lights on Wakeman and PJ Romano Fields.

Two clarifications: commissioner Craig Schiavone asked the Parks & Recreation Commission to ensure that games are not played on nights that there are other student or parent activities planned at Saugatuck Elementary School — not Staples, as originally reported — to cut down on traffic, and ensure adequate parking.

It should be noted too that lights will be allowed Mondays through Saturdays only. There will be no lights on Sundays.

positive directions: $125K to PREVENT UNDERAGE DRINKING AND DRUGS

Positive Directions – The Center for Prevention & Counseling has been awarded a 5-year grant of $125,000. The funds, from the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, will expand efforts to prevent underage alcohol and cannabis use in Westport.

The grant builds on a collaboration between Positive Directions, Westport’s Human Services and Police Departments, the Aspetuck Health District, Westport Public Schools, parents and guardians, youth, and other community partners.

The grant will fund a full-time prevention coordinator and youth peer advocate at Positive Directions. It will also support expanded youth leadership opportunities, parent and caregiver education, community awareness efforts, substance-free teen activities, and enhanced prevention strategies.

robo wreckers reach out

This spring, the Staples High School Robotics Club team won the RAINS Drone Competition. as All-Around Champions.

This year, they’re spreading their robotic wings. They’ll compete in Aerial Drone and SeaPerch.

The “Robo Wreckers” are giving back too. Club members are writing an open-source drone curriculum for other Connecticut schools. They hope to get drone kits into schools that can’t afford them.

SHERRY JAGERSON’S SUSTAINABLE FOUNTAIN

The new water refill station at Winslow Park has an even newer name.

On Sunday, Sustainable Westport dedicated its contribution to conservation in memory of Sherry Jagerson.

Family, friends and neighbors celebrated the longtime environmental activist.

Earth Animal joined Westport’s Parks & Recreation Department as partners. The many dogs on hand enjoyed natural dog treats, and a basket of earth-friendly toys and accessories.

The Winslow Park refill station is part of UnPlastic Westport, Sustainable Westport’s community-wide effort to reduce single-use plastic. More stations are planned around town. To help fund the next one, click here.

GOOD VIBEZ FOR GIRLS

Good Vibez is a great idea.

Two Westport moms organize retreats for girls ages 11–15. They build healthy habits, boost confidence, and learn practical tools to help them feel their best, while having fun.

Each retreat is led by a team of professionals. Activities include yoga, mindfulness and meditation, healthy cooking lessons. art projects, group discussions and opportunities for reflection and connection.

The goal is to create a warm, uplifting environment where girls can unplug, recharge, and leave feeling more confident and grounded.

OBITUARY: BERNIE ORENSTEIN

Noted television comedy writer and producer, and longtime Westport and Weston resident, Bernie Orenstein died September 14. He was 95.

Throughout his 40-year career he collaborated with stars like Joan Rivers, Dean Martin, Judy Garland, Dick Van Dyke, Marlo Thomas, Redd Foxx and Bing Crosby.

With creative partner Saul Turteltaub he wrote and produced classics including “That Girl,” “The New Dick Van Dyke Show,” “Cosby,” “What’s Happening!!” and
“Sanford and Son.”

Bernie was also a generous mentor and educator, inspiring a new generation of writers and producers through LIU Brooklyn’s TV Writers Studio MFA program.

He is survived by beloved wife Barbara Rhoades Orenstein; children Lisa, Barbara, Jenny and Alec; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

Born 16 weeks early, he weighed just 621 grams.

His wellness journey began that day.

Doctors said he would be blind, and never walk.

But no one told Daniel that.

Buoyed by support from his parents and sister, and many others — including eye doctors and occupational, speech and physical therapists — he survived.

And thrived.

At Staples High School he ran cross country, and competed in indoor and outdoor track. He graduated in 2017.

That was only the start.

Daniel ran 4 marathons. He got his undergraduate degree in human services from Beacon College; he’s now an adaptive special needs master trainer and special education paraeducator. His passions are physical activity and wellness science.

He earned Red Cross certification as a lifeguard and water safety instructor. He’s also a certified personal trainer, with master certification in adaptive special needs.

He works with special needs children and adults. Most satisfying, he says, is training and mentoring autistic young adults, as well as helping young adults with disabilities perform aquatic exercises. (Particularly satisfying: teaching a boy with cerebral palsy how to swim).

Oh, yeah: Daniel also serves on Westport’s Commission on People with Disabilities.

Two years ago, he helped start a social club for people between the ages of 18 and 30. They meet for lunch or dinner, and take walks around Compo Beach and Longshore.

He is grateful for all that he has — including his vision. (One eye is better than the other.)

He never had a mindset of “I can’t do this,” he says. It’s always been, “I can do it!”

Daniel’s athletic career began early, accompanying his mother on runs throughout Westport.

Running in the rain …

It was work. But as he got faster, he enjoyed it more. Training for Staples — and then for 5 and 10Ks, half-marathons and marathons (including New York City)  — were a satisfying break from school (and life).

Running remains a way to stay in shape, and “clear my head.”

His latest project: starting a fitness group — Miles4Smiles — for neurodiverse individuals.

“Fitness is about more than exercise,” Daniel says.

“It can be an opportunity to build confidence, make friends, develop social skills, and discover what you are capable of.”

… and better weather.

Nick Rossi (Franklin Shepard) is a professional singer, actor and musician. He has appeared regionally in “Master Harold … and the Boys,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Pericles,” “La Cage Aux Folles” and “Jersey Boys

Charlie Zuckerman (Charley Kringas) was a production assistant for “Millions” at Lincoln Center. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, he was also an intern at the 52nd Street Project, a non-profit that pairs young people with professional artists to create original theater.

Avery Mendillo (Mary Flynn) is a New York–based actor and singer with roots in musical theatre, and a career in film and TV. She recently filmed her first feature film.

Daisy Brackett (Gussie Carnegie) earned a master’s degree in advanced classical acting training from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Her credits include short films, independent projects, showcases and reels.

Mia Kobylinski (Beth Spencer Shepard) is a designer at Snake River Interiors. Her love of travel and photography help her gather design inspiration from all over the world.

Jamie Mann (Valedictorian) graduated from the University of Michigan’s musical theater program in 2025. He made his Broadway debut in “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” He appeared previously on the Netflix show “Country Comfort,” and toured nationally as the lead in “Billy Elliot.”

Antonio Antonelli (Terry, Studio Owner)  is an actor and crew member. He voiced the character Shane in “Santaman,” an appeared as Wes in “Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow.”

Georgia Wright (Scotty, Frank’s Agent, Audrey, Scotty’s Significant Other) is a non-binary, New York-based emerging playwright, actor and director. They have written and staged several independent and festival plays,

Sophia Sherman (Scotty, Frank’s Agent, Audrey, Scotty’s Significant Other) studied acting and performing arts management at the University of Michigan. Based in Los Angeles, Sophia has focused on screen acting.

Chad Celini (Bunker, An Actor) is an actor and performer who works in regional theater and independent productiosns. He has appeared in “Godspell,” “Curtains” and holiday musical revues, and on screen in the 2025 film “Game Over.”

Jake Watzman (Bunker, An Actor)  is a voice actor and theatre performer. He graduated with a BA in theatre from Muhlenberg College. He is recognized for his work in indie animation, visual novels, and voiceover projects.

Ari Sklar is a senior at Staples. He is known for his work in regional theater, and providing backup vocals for the Netflix film “13: The Musical.”

Lexi Holoubek-Sebok (Mrs.Spencer, Beth’s Mother)  transitioned from acting into professional marketing and data analysis, working as a community strategy and intelligence analyst at Burson.

CYBERSECURITY: 3 WAYS TO STAY SAFE

“06880” has posted several pieces recently about cybersecurity. (Reminder: We were hacked — big time — a couple of weeks ago.)

Each time, we’ve sung the praises of tech god Sam Disraelly.

Now, have a chance to learn how to prevent damage by bad guys — and to meet Sam, one of the real good guys.

The event is next Tuesday (October 27, 6 p.m., VFW Post 399). It’s hosted by (of all groups) the Wilton Drum Hill chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (who only had to worry about Benedict Arnold).

But that’s not all.

Soon, Sam will team up with the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce, for a pair of Verso University “Lunch and Learn” sessions at the Westport Library.

PINKALICIOUS halloween

Halloween’s color is orange.

But this Sunday (October 25, 2 to 3 p.m.), the holiday turns pink.

Westport “Pinkalicious” author Victoria Kann will read her new book, “Snickerdoodle.” It’s a family-friendly event, with books available for purchase and signing.

Then comes trick-or-treating on Jesup Green. Westport Animal Shelters Advocates will join the fun. Guests can bring items from their wish list to donate.

EVERLASTING EVERGREEN SEWER WORK

As anyone who has tried to take the Evergreen Avenue shortcut knows, you can’t get to Myrtle Avenue from there.

As part of ongoing work, homes on that road were connected to temporary water a few weeks ago.

Now, digging has begun on Evergreen Parkway. They’ll go about 100 feet a day. That involves digging a trench navigating around gas, sewer, roots, rocks and other buried stuff; laying the pipe, then covering it all up, including an asphalt patch on the road.

Once the water main is installed, it is pressure tested for leaks. When the main is secure, workers dig up the road again and connect every house to it.

There is no estimated date for completion.

vince mcmahon crash: charges dropped

Speaking of speeding: In July of 2025 WWE co-founder Vince McMahon was involved in a high-speed accident on the Merritt Parkway, in Westport.

Driving northbound near Exit 20 (formerly Exit 41) at a speed of 110 to 115 miles an hour, the 79-year-old Greenwich resident slammed his Bentley Continental GT into the back of a BMW. He caromed off a guardrail, then continued driving before a Connecticut state trooper pulled him over.

“COLOSSI” AT MOCA: WHAT IT ALL MEANS

Visitors are flocking to MoCA\CT, for Rick Schaefer’s monumental charcoal drawings.

On Saturday (October 24, 4 p.m.), the artist will discuss the historical, political and visual dimensions of his work.

obituary: carolyn landis

Westport resident Carolyn Landis died Friday. She was 87.

A graduate of the Bronx High School of Science and Barnard College, with a degree in zoology, she taught science in the New York City public schools. After moving to Connecticut, she became a technical science writer.

Carolyn was a voracious reader and tennis player. Later, water aerobics at the YMCA became a daily ritual, and a source of both exercise and friendship

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Alan; sons Eric (Johanna) of Rye, New Hampshire, and Mark (Deb) of New York, and grandchildren Beau (Katie Sweeney), Aaron, Justin (Maddie) and William (Emily).

A memorial service is set for Thursday (October 22, 2 p.m., Abraham L.
Green & Son Funeral Home, Fairfield). Contributions in Carolyn’s name can be
made to the Westport Library or Saint Jude’s.

If the owners of Old Mill Grocery & Deli get their way, a new development zone
will allow them to sell and serve alcohol next summer.

Last night the Planning & Zoning Commission held a public hearing on proposed zoning changes that would not only allow liquor sales and consumption at the former Romanacci’s, but would give the P&Z stronger governing power over similar establishments in otherwise residential neighborhoods.

Attorney Eric Bernheim, representing Soundview Empowerment Alliance, the nonprofit that owns the 107-year-old property at 222 Hillspoint Road near Old Mill Beach, outlined a proposal for Text Amendment #875 that would establish a new Food and Beverage Planned Development District (PDD) in Westport.

It would permit outdoor eating areas within 25 feet of a principal building, and allow sale of liquor for on-site consumption.

At the same time, a map amendment proposal would rezone the grocery property from its current Residential Zone B to the new PDD.

Old Mill Grocery & Deli has been a neighborhood staple since 1919.

“It makes sense for Westport, and hopefully we’ll have longevity instead of change every 2 or 3 years as the operators get worn down,” Bernheim said.

The operators for the last 3 years — Romanacci’s, owned by Graziano and Maurizio Ricci — announced in September that they would not renew their lease. A new operator has not yet been named.

The decision to close came on the heels of a legal battle questioning the commission’s November 2024 effort to allow alcohol sales at the store.

In February a Superior Court judge overturned Text Amendments 846, and earlier version 843, which allowed the sale of alcohol, as well as consumption at outdoor tables.

A group of neighbors filed lawsuits challenging the text amendments, raising questions about parking, traffic, noise and pedestrian safety in the neighborhood.

The judge concluded that the zoning changes amounted to “spot zoning,” and improperly expanded a non-conforming commercial use in a residential zone.

Old Mill Grocery’s communal table was a community gathering place.

“This is exactly what the doctor, or in this case the judge, ordered,” said chair Paul Lebowitz, who called the new text amendment very supportable. “This is exactly what is needed to save a jewel of Westport.”

Representative Town Meeting member Jimmy Izzo was one of 2 members of the public speaking in favor of the proposed zoning change.

“There were no issues at the Old Mill Deli, and I’m in favor of keeping this here,” he said. “The community really loves it, and it’s a not a crazy place.”

In opposition, attorney Joel Green, representing the Old Mill Preservation Group, cautioned that the zoning change could be a tool that could be used to turn any existing property into a non- conforming use that violates the town’s plan of conservation and development, including introducing bars and other establishments selling alcohol to quiet residential areas.

“What are you doing here, dropping businesses into residential areas?” he asked.

“I can’t imagine the residents of Westport understand the Pandora’s box of legislation that is being opened. It will not pass judicial scrutiny.”

The issue was tabled, to be revisited by the commission in November.

Following a long wait, 2 athletic fields in town will get lights.

After debating and hearing public comment throughout the summer, the Planning & Zoning Commission voted 4-1 last night to approve site plan changes that allow permanent lights on both the Wakeman turf field next to Bedford Middle School, and PJ Romano Field behind Saugatuck Elementary School.

The resolutions were voted on separately. Paul Lebowitz, Craig Schiavone, Bre Injeski and Michael Cammeyer approved, while Michael Calise opposed.

Approval means that LED lights can be affixed to 4 70-foot poles at both locations. New technology, experts said, sharply reduce “light spillage.”

Proponents cited field shortages for Staples and youth athletes. The issue is particularly acute in late fall and early spring.

Much of the discussion over the past several months centered around conditions governing field usage.

Last night’s plan included 16 conditions governing use of the fields.

Lights will be turned off at 9 p.m. every day Mondays through Saturdays. Lights will not be used on Sundays. The original proposal allowed lights until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Lights will remain on for another 30 minutes — at a dimmed level — enabling attendees to leave safely and clean-up to occur.

In addition, the Parks & Recreation Department will work with the Board of Education to install egress lighting between Wakeman Field and parking areas.

Schiavone asked Parks & Rec to ensure that games are not played on nights that there are other student or parent activities planned at PJ Romano, to cut down on traffic and ensure adequate parking.

Another area of concern for Wakeman neighbors was amplified noise — for example, speakers used for music. It will be allowed for pre-game warm-ups only.

Use of the fields will be limited to Parks & Recreation and school activities, with no multi-game tournaments allowed.

In addition, 3 trees will be added to the Wakeman landscape plan.

A Parks & Rec staff member or designee will be on site, to monitor compliance with all regulations. A committee will be created to address any complains.

Calise — the lone commissioner to vote against the lights — said that there were not enough controls, the lights would be on too many nights of the week, and there is no “clear picture of who will be using these later hours.” He asked for
reassurance that the fields would not be used by outside groups.

Parks & Recreation Department director Erik Barbieri said, “We at Parks & Rec are very pleased with the P&Z’s decision. And we are happy for the thousands of kids who will benefit from the decision.

“We will ensure that all restrictions are enforced, for the safe and proper use of these lights.”

It’s official.

Spinnaker has filed a site plan and special permit application for 606 Riverside Avenue.

That’s the Saugatuck property — currently the site of Minute Men Cleaners, and nearby businesses — that was the site of the failed Hamlet proposal.

Spinnaker’s affiliate, Saugatuck TOD 606 LLC, hopes to build 142 rental apartments, and 3,838 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

Ten percent of the units would be deed-restricted as affordable to families making up to 80% of the statewide median income.

Another 10% would be deed-restricted as “workforce housing.” The affordable units are integrated throughout the building.

The façade along Riverside Avenue would be 3 1/2 stories tall. Higher buildings would be “stepped back into the site so that it is substantially less visible from the street.”

All parking — 241 spaces, 20 of which are tandem for a total of 261 cars — will be screened from view, on 2 separately accessed levels.

Spinnaker also proposes adding 10 new on-street public parking spots.

The plan follows several rounds of pre-application reviews by the Planning & Zoning Commission and Architectural Review Board.

Spinnaker says it has “also engaged in significant neighbor outreach, including written notices to nearly 90 neighbors, meetings with neighbors, the Westport Alliance for Saugatuck, local and State community leaders, neighborhood business owners, Town staff, Connecticut Department of Transportation staff and other interested parties.”

The application — received yesterday by the Planning & Zoning Department — is an important step on the journey to approval. Bodies like the P&Z, ARB and Conservation Commission have not yet scheduled hearings.

Spinnaker — a developer “focusing on transit-oriented developments” — is collaborating with Beinfield Architecture. Both firms are based in Norwalk.

Spinnaker calls its plan “contextually appropriate for Saugatuck, and grounded in a traditional and contextual vernacular.”

The developer adds that it:

• Concentrates development near transportation nodes
• Strengthens the character and economy of Saugatuck Center
• Maintains appropriate building scale and character
• Adds housing to support an active mixed-used area
• Serves empty nesters, retirees, and children of Westport residents
• Improves runoff to the Saugatuck River
• Improves pedestrian friendliness in Saugatuck Center.

An earlier “Hamlet at Saugatuck” development was first proposed in June 2022, when ROAN Ventures submitted an application to create a new zoning district for the project.

The plan — including retail, residences, a hotel, marina and public spaces — was rejected by the Planning & Zoning Commission 3 years later. ROAN then said it was considering a residential-focused project, perhaps including 500 units of 8-30g affordable housing.

uncle sam and miss liberty: trashed?

Last week, “06880” reported on the plight of a local woman who had donated historic family heirloom kewpie dolls to the Westport Museum for History & Culture. She wants them back, but has not been able to reach anyone at the institution.

Her plea echoes that of other residents, who wondered about the status of their gifts. For several years, they believe, the Westport Museum has “de-accessioned” — sold or otherwise gotten rid of — donated uniforms, furniture and other memorabilia.

On Saturday, Paul Delano spotted 2 of the most iconic items. For years, “Uncle Sam” and “Miss Liberty” — kinetic sculptures created by Greens Farms artists Walter and Naiad Einsel — graced the front porch of the former Westport Historical Society.

Now, Paul found, they sit broken and neglected, in the back.

SIGNS OF COMPASSION: WESTPORT TO TAIWAN

“Signs of Compassion” — the work by local artist Miggs Burroughs with 30 lenticular photos showing local residents using sign language to recite Emily Dickinson’s poem of the same name, and fellow Westporter Mark Yurkiw’s accompanying Braille “prayer wheel” mantra — was first shown at the Westport Library, in 2017.

Four years later it went big time. It was displayed at the United Nations, on a 102-foot curved wall — the first time any work had been shown without sponsorship by a member nation.

“Signs of Compassion”

Now it’s really going international. From November 13 through January 26, “Signs of Compassion” will be shown at the Hsinchu City Art Museum in Taiwan.

The 30 Westporters (including yours truly) who signed words to the poem won’t be at the opening reception.

But Miggs and Mark will be. Just one more example of how 06880 — the town, not the blog — truly meets the world.

WTF! BEER GARDEN DRAWS FAMILIES

It was called a “Beer Garden.”

But yesterday’s Wakeman Town Farm event was actually a family friendly fall festival.

A crowd of 400 — plenty of them way too young to drink — enjoyed live music, lawn games, bubbles, animal encounters and crafts. Plus plenty of food.

Of course, there were frosty local beers and adult beverages too, sponsored by Greens Farms Spirit Shop.

But that was just half of the WTF day.

At night, they hosted a smaller version of the original Harvest Fest (rained out earlier this fall). Another crowd of about 250 enjoyed food, drinks, music, and a chance to support one of our town’s true jewels.

Putting on a delayed Harvest Fest was a great gesture — one the Farm did not have to do. But that’s the way they roll: serving, educating, entertaining and feeding the community.

CATCH A LIFT RETURNS TO WESTPORT

For more than a decade, Westport has had a special relationship with Catch A Lift Fund. The national non-profit provides gym memberships and home gym equipment to help wounded post-9/11 service members heal physically and mentally, through physical fitness.

Westporters have donated funds, welcomed veterans, and joined in workouts at venues like the police station, VFW, beach and Birchwood Country Club. The vets give plenty back in return — as inspiration, and  serving as “angels” for children, teens and adults with disabilities through myTeamTriumph.

Recently — honoring the 25th anniversary of 9/11, and 250th birthday of the United States — Catch a Lift returned to Westport.

WOMAN’S CLUB MAKES STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Yesterday, for the 17th year, the Westport Woman’s Club joined thousands of others in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Sherwood State State Park.

WWC members, family and friends showed support — and raised funds — for breast cancer research.

As thanks for their contribution, the club received a great banner, with their name.
