As the town body solicits membership applications for the 2026-27 school year, Jack reflects on his time on the board.

When I joined the Westport Youth Commission in September of 2024, I could never have imagined how it would impact me in so many ways.

I attended both the general meetings and project meetings each month. However, attendance is where my contribution ended. I would arrive, listen, and leave.

From time to time I would market the commission at my school by making an announcement. In reality though, I really wasn’t very involved.

That, however, changed fast.

In the summer of 2025 I sat down with both Kevin Godburn (director of Westport Youth Services) and Dr. Jill Greenberg (adult member of the WYC) to discuss a new project idea.

With the first selectman post up for election, now was the time to connect students with local politicians. Different ideas were floated. until we settled on a conversation-style event with the 3 candidates.

I would be the leader — guiding, managing and executing the project with the support of my fellow commission members. I went from being an attendee at meetings to leading a fast-paced, all-hands-on-deck project.

I ran the weekly core team Zoom meetings with Jake Shufro, Lee Shufro, Kevin Godburn and Dr. Greenberg, and kept everyone updated on what needed to be taken next.

I learned a great deal from the mentorship of Lee Shufro and Dr. Greenberg. Each meeting I improved and kept everyone on track, ensuring that the day’s agenda was covered. In the end, all our hard work paid off. The event was a tremendous success.

One lesson among many I have learned is that it’s crucial to jump in from the start. I wish I had gotten involved in projects earlier.

Ultimately, though, I was able to participate in a very meaningful way. If there’s one thing people can take away from my journey on the Youth Commission, it is that any student who joins has the ability and opportunity to make a true, lasting impact.

Speaking to 175 Y’s Men of Westport and Weston at Saugatuck Congregational Church on Thursday, Dr. Kenneth Pollack said that the war with Iran has become a grinding war of attrition with no easy exit for the United States.

A former CIA analyst and National Security Council official, Pollack is now vice president for policy at the Middle East Institute. He warned that forced regime change in Tehran is a dangerous gamble, and said Washington has “run out of good options,” leaving only bad choices as it struggles to end the conflict, reopen vital oil shipping lanes, and find a strategy President Trump can use to ease domestic economic pain while pressuring Iran’s hard‑line leadership to back down.

Looking ahead, Pollack said much of the world’s economic fate now hinges on whether the U.S. is willing to do the politically difficult work needed to pry open the Strait of Hormuz and blunt Iran’s regional influence. That could mean inserting limited ground forces to secure shipping lanes and potentially striking at Iranian allies such as Hezbollah, steps he called militarily feasible but politically fraught.

Until then, he warned, shortages of oil, liquefied natural gas and critical materials like fertilizers and helium will deepen, increasing the risk of a global recession and leaving Iran’s hard‑liners in position to keep exploiting their “chokehold” on the world economy.

Speaking of art: As the nation’s 250th birthday nears, the Weston Commission for the Arts seeks submissions that explore America’s past, present and future.

The “Weston Celebrates America 250” exhibit (July 3 to 31) will complement July 4th activities like a patriotic tailgating contest, bell ringing ceremony, old- fashioned family sports/field day and picnic, and fireworks.

This Thursday (April 9, 7 p.m.), MoCA\CT celebrates National Poetry Month bt transforming its galleries into a performance space.

Norwalk-based spoken word artist Sahmra Sawyer (Supreme Divinity) will perform original poetry inspired by “Art, Jazz + the Blues” — the museum’s current exhibit — while live jazz plays in the background.

As the performance unfolds, Bridgeport artist Lauren Clayton will create a large-scale painting — translating spoken word and sound into a visual work in real time.

One question currently under review by the Planning & Zoning Commission deserves clear attention: how we define and support residents with disabilities.

Text Amendment #864, now before the P&Z, offers an important opportunity to expand the definition of “developmental disability” for special needs housing.

The current state definition framework — limited to individuals with an IQ below 70 and onset before age 18 — excludes many residents who face real barriers to appropriate housing.

136 Riverside Avenue now houses adults with disabilities. It is off-site affordable housing, part of the Richmondville Mill project.

The Commission on People with Disabilities strongly supports aligning the definition of “Special Needs Individuals” with federal law (42 U.S.C. §15002) rather than the more restrictive Connecticut standard.

The broader federal definition better reflects the range of disabilities that affect activities of daily living, and would help close existing gaps in access to special needs housing.

We support allowing off-site affordable housing within the Inclusionary Housing Overlay District — with clear standards.

We urge the Planning & Zoning Commission to allow off-site special needs housing only when it is clearly demonstrated to be superior to an on-site option — such as through better access to transportation, closer proximity to services, or design features like shared community spaces that more effectively support residents’ needs.

All proposals will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure they promote inclusion, community integration, and compliance with applicable regulations.

Off-site, deed-restricted special needs housing can also deliver an increased number of smaller, efficiency-style units, creating opportunities for shared spaces and supportive services, and generating more moratorium points than comparable on-site options.

3 George Street (above), off Maple Avenue South, could be used as a group home. The developer of an apartment project on Post Road East says that an expanded definition of “special needs individuals” would help expand access to a group home like this.

While on-site housing offers the benefits of integration, thoughtfully planned off-site housing can better meet the needs of individuals with disabilities by enabling more coordinated access to services, supports, and amenities.

Westport has an opportunity to take a thoughtful, balanced approach — expanding housing while maintaining strong zoning principles. The goal is not to work around the rules, but to make them work better for everyone.

The video game arcade horrified some adults, who thought it signaled The End of Westport.

But it was a formative, home-away-from home haven for hundreds of youngsters growing up in the 1980s.

At the center of it all was Arnie Kaye, a larger-than-life (both physically and metaphorically) man who tormented town officials, made sure his arcade (and adjacent ice cream parlor) were safe and clean for all kids, and had a knack for headlines. (Click here for one of several “06880” stories about Arnie’s Place.)

On Monday, someone posted a YouTube video about Arnie’s.

In just 2 1/2 minutes it covers all the key points, about Arnie and his controversies. There are vintage photos and videos of the interior, and of Arnie himself.

But it’s also very odd. Sure, Arnie once chained himself to Town Hall — yet the images shown have nothing to do with our building and cops.

Some of the video scenes of Arnie — while resembling him — don’t quite convey how big he really was.

It’s narrated too by one of those annoying AI voices.

Still, if you’ve got a spare moment, it’s worth clicking here or below. You’ll see a weird look, into a weird time in Westport history.

The actual first raptor of the spring was spotted earlier, by Gray’s Creek. An earlier report of the osprey at the tall perch next to Terrain turned out to be a hawk.

Their mates will no doubt join them soon. We’ll see them building nests, fishing for food, and — hopefully — tending their young.

“Your State, Your Business” — the program that brings high-ranking officials to the Westport Library to share their work with business owners and residents — continued Thursday.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong — the third speaker, in the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce series — opened with “Law School 101,” which set the stage for the civil legal and constitutional law discussions that followed.

Key topics included the role of the AG here, and differences with other states; high profile issues like personal data and privacy, and cases Tong has filed on behalf of the state and its citizens.

Congratulations to Ignacy Nieweglowski, Sahil Vora, Rohan Sareen, Ezra Schwartz and Kevin Cano!

On Sunday, the Staples High School students captured first place in the Lockheed Martin CyberQuest Competition.

And they snagged gold for the second year in a row.

In the annual capture-the-flag competition, students take on a wide range of challenges designed by professional cybersecurity engineers. They include multi-step intrusion scenarios, steganography, reverse engineering, operating system exploitation, packet analysis, web vulnerabilities and social engineering.

The event was held at Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky headquarters in Stratford. Facing teams from across the region, the Stapleites worked collaboratively through 3 hours of intense problem-solving.

Following last year’s win, the students grew Staples’ cybersecurity program, and formed a larger team.

In addition to this year’s first-place finish, the B and C teams also placed in the top 5. The B team included Anit Arvind, Tucker Eklund, Srihan Popuri, Maadhav Subramaniam and Jonah Frey, while the C team was Joey Carpenter, Cora Barrett and Nora Ismael-Bakkali.

The family worships at Assumption Church, and are huge fans of the Westport Weston Family YMCA, Legacy Martial Arts, Compo Beach, the Levitt Pavilion and Westport Library. Rosa writes:

In 2018, our journey with Westport Public Schools began with a simple recommendation to postpone kindergarten. What followed was a years-long trek through evaluations, diagnoses, inability for my child to learn virtually, and the heavy isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For years I struggled to square the child I saw at home — who could focus for hours on intricate Lego sets — with the child who was reportedly “failing to attend” in class.

At home, getting him to write a single sentence was a battleground of exhaustion and heartbreak. I could not understand why.

During the pandemic, I worked alongside my child and had a front-row seat to his ongoing struggle, frustration, and inability to do the work that was being requested by the school district. It was so painful for both my child and for me.

My child’s struggles went on for years. My gut instinct told me that something was wrong, even though the school continued to reassure me and encouraged “independence” for middle school.

My child could not even start an assignment alone, let alone finish one. Tears, frustration, my child thinking he was stupid. It was heartbreaking for a parent.

Since the school had not figured out why my child struggled year after year, I had no choice but to have a private evaluation done at my own expense.

The neuropsychologist made clear that if my child had the “capacity to become independent, he would have already done so.”

My son was failing, and was being failed by the school system who tried to assure me that my child was doing “fine.” They stated his grades, which were As and Bs, were proof of success, and that his low standardized test scores were merely “data points” or “click-through” errors.

At that point my son’s handwriting remained the scrawl of a 1st grader. External tutors warned us his comprehension was years behind grade level.

The turning point for my child came when we stepped outside the traditional system. Through an intensive summer program at The Southport School and eventually transitioning to Winston Preparatory School, the “magic” happened.

For the first time, my son felt capable. Within 2 months of starting 7th grade at Winston Prep, he volunteered that he loved school. He couldn’t quite explain the “magic” of how they taught him — only that for the first time, he was actually learning and he no longer felt stupid. His whole demeanor changed.I started to get my child back.

The cost of this “magic” was high. It required an educational attorney, expensive private assessments, and the difficult decision to leave the neighborhood school.

Today my child is thriving, advocating, and looking toward a future in engineering. My child has found his community through neurodiverse mentors who taught him that his brain isn’t broken—it’s a superpower.

To the families currently in the “exhaustion phase”: Trust your instinct.

I would like to nominate Jon Janik — the head pro at the Longshore golf course — for this week’s Unsung Hero Award.

Tee time reservations opened this morning at 6:30. The team migrated to a new booking system yesterday afternoon.

It’s been a challenging transition. But Jon’s patience and persistence have been truly appreciated.

He emailed back and forth with me for several hours yesterday. He did not stop until he was able to get both my husband’s and son’s accounts functioning properly. He worked well past regular hours — until almost 9 p.m., in fact.

That’s good news. Even better: There’s a new reservation system, new carts, enhancements to communication, and continued course improvements.

The ForeUp reservation service will provide a more user-friendly interface for booking and managing tee times.

Booking begins tomorrow (Thursday, 6:30 a.m.). Tee time booking windows remain 5 days in advance, starting at 6:30 a.m.

Golfers should check their email for a message from ForeUp, with details on setting up an online booking account. That includes a credit card, as no-show fees will be enforced.

Also new: electric lithium-ion Club Car carts. They’re equipped with GPS technology, allowing golfers to have distances available on the course.

A new phone system will be introduced too, to cut down on the general information phone calls going into the pro shop. The website remains the most easily accessible place for info on pricing, tee times, instruction and more.

Westport residents wishing to purchase or renew a golf handpass can do it online or at the Parks & Recreation office in Longshore (weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).

The Westport Police Department has joined a statewide distracted driving enforcement campaign, and public awareness initiative.

Both run all month, as part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Law enforcement agencies across Connecticut will ramp up distracted driving enforcement efforts. The focus is on identifying and citing drivers who text, use electronic handheld devices, or otherwise divert their attention from the road.

In 2023 alone, 5,202 crashes involving distracted driving resulted in 12 fatalities and 78 serious injuries.

Two saves in one week, both worth noting:

Yesterday, Westport Police Officer Bernie Kelley assisted Westport Animal Control Officer Peter Reid in the rescue of a baby great horned owl at Longshore.

The bird was transported to Wildlife in Crisis for treatment of a small wound. If re-nesting proves feasible, it will be attempted. Residents interested in contributing towards the owlet’s care — or that of many other locally rescued and abandoned wildlife can click here.

Last Thursday, Westport Police Officer Daniel Lovallo responded to a roaming dog near I-95. The rottweiler was transported to Westport Animal Control, and received Westport Animal Shelter Advocates-funded care the next day.

She has been named Dottie, and is loved by the Westport Animal Control officers and WASA volunteers. No microchip was located and no owner has claimed her, so she is available for adoption. If interested, call WASA (203-557-0361), or email wasa1@optonline.net.

The Staples High School seniors were honored Monday, at the Connecticut Association of Schools’ 31st annual High School Arts Banquet.

Harry McLaughlin (visual arts) and Eva (music and theater) were selected by Staples faculty members for their outstanding achievement, dedication, and impact within their disciplines.

The evening included a keynote address about how the arts shape identity, give voice to personal expression and create lasting impact, and a performance by Rubyfruit, a University of Connecticut a cappella group that promotes women’s empowerment through music.

Scott Brodie has lived in New York for decades.

But the 1970 Staples graduate grew up here. He visited his parents regularly; his mother Esther died less than a year ago, at 98.

So Scott was intrigued to read in yesterday’s Roundup that one of the homes the Historic District Commission will discuss on April 9, for a demolition permit, is 48 Burr Farms Road — a few houses down from the one his parents built in the 1950s.

He writes: “The house is one of about a dozen cookie-cutter split levels built by Norman Shapiro, who first developed the northern half of the road in the early 1950s.

“Over the years these have been either heavily modified, or torn down to make room for much larger houses. Indeed, #48 has been for many years pretty much the only one of these original houses in essentially its original state:

“Only the few folks with long memories and a historically-trained eye can ‘see’ the bones of the original splits in the other, heavily-modified buildings. For example, here is #43:

Nearly 100 Westport Rotary Club members and guests gathered Tuesday, to honor Win Allen.

The longtime, 93-year-old Westporter was celebrated for his service to, and leadership of, the organization. Marty Helman, a Rotary International trustee, came from Maine for the event.

The ceremony included a performance by Diego Carniero, a Rotary International Peace Ambassador, and acclaimed Ecuadorean cellist.

Westport Police made 5 custodial arrests between March 27 and 31.

A 29-year-old Manchester man as charged with larceny, burglary and criminal mischief, and conspiracy to commit those crimes, following an investigation into a September burglary at Westport Auto Repair. Two doors were pried open by suspects, who tried to steal the ATM but ultimately took 2 cash registers. They contained $1,000 in cash; damages were $4,800. He was held on a $50,000 bond.

A 28-year-old Bronx man was charged with larceny, after a complaint from Mike’s Factory Direct. After an online order for $33,136 worth of massage chairs was picked up by a man driving a U-Haul truck in November, the credit card company complained of fraud. The man was released on a $50,000 bond.

A 32-year-old Hamden man was charged with larceny, after 17 sets of tire and rim sets, worth over $30,000, were stolen in January from Maserati of Westport. He was released on a $50,000 bond.

A 54-year-old Middlebury man was charged with operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs, and failure to drive in the proper lane, after his vehicle struck one that was parked and unoccupied on River Lane. He was released on a $100 bond.

A 69-year-old Norwalk man was charged with disorderly conduct, after an early morning argument between 2 friends in a home about the quality of food being served turned physical. He was held on a $5,000 bond.

Westport Police also issued these citations:

• Traveling unreasonably fast: 12 citations
• Texting while driving: 8
• Failure to renew registration: 8
• Operating a motor vehicle under suspension: 2
• Operating a motor vehicle without a license: 2
• Tinted window glass violation: 2

Take a look at Westport the way a navigation algorithm does.

I-95: Thursday, March 26, 9 p.m.

It sees not a collection of neighborhoods — but a network.

Because that’s how today’s traffic actually moves.

From the Waze-eye view, the logic is clear. Waze sees traffic speed and volume, but it doesn’t reliably see or respect local rules and human factors that shape safe and appropriate traffic patterns.

Waze emojis and avatars — “Moods” — represent “Wazers:” happy, fast, or stuck in traffic. Other icons indicate real-time reports, crashes, hazards and police.

Waze does not consistently indicate local thru-truck prohibitions. Neither school bus stops nor routes are accounted for. Ditto cyclists, crosswalks and pedestrian activity.

And Waze of course has no way of measuring or reporting long time and cumulative effects of traffic noise, pollution, aesthetic impact or vibration damage.

Waze also ignores narrow streets and historic districts — for example, the Bridge Street National Register Historic District.

The Cribari Bridge is not isolated. It connects directly to a sequence of roads that carry traffic eastward through Westport.

From the Waze eye view, the logic is clear.

The William F. Cribari Memorial Bridge connects Riverside Avenue’s commercial district directly to Bridge Street (Route 136), feeding traffic into a residential corridor that continues inland. What appears to be a local crossing is, in fact, a key link in a broader east–west route.

Now look a few miles away.

Individually, these are routine infrastructure projects.

Together, they form something much more consequential.

Just east of Westport, the Sasco Creek Bridge sits on Greens Farms Road near the Post Road and I-95 Exit 19. The Connecticut Department of Transportation proposes removing a major constraint at the eastern end of the same corridor.

CTDOT is:

• Likely increasing load capacity at Sasco Creek. The design drawings show a full-capacity structure capable of carrying legal truck traffic.
• Removing geometric constraints and increasing load capacity at the Cribari Bridge, making it capable of handling legal truck traffic.

Yet the Environmental Assessment of the Cribari Bridge assumes trucks will not use this route — without analyzing what happens once both bridges in this corridor are upgraded,

That creates a continuous, higher-capacity east-west route from Fairfield on the Old Kings Highway through Westport on Greens Farms Road and Bridge Street to Saugatuck — closely paralleling I-95 between Exits 18 and 19.

This is not speculation. It is visible on the map. The Sasco Bridge CTDOT Project 0158-0218 is already underway. The hearings concluded in 2021.

They concluded about the time the Environmental Assessment for CTDOT project 0158-0214 (the Cribari Bridge) was being written. Now the hearings and time for public comment on that project will end on April 17.

Combined, these CTDOT projects should broaden the Cribari Bridge Area of Potential Effect to the entire I-95-Greens Farms Road corridor.

Navigation apps do not consider whether a road is “appropriate” for through traffic.

They calculate the fastest route.

When I-95 backs up — as it often does — these systems will route drivers off the highway, send them across Sasco Creek, through Greens Farms and Bridge Street, over the Cribari Bridge, and back toward the highway or local destinations.

Once weight limits and geometric constraints are removed, this corridor becomes accessible, continuous, and visible to routing algorithms.

At that point, it will be used.

The Environmental Assessment for the Cribari Bridge suggests that trucks and through-traffic will not find this route “desirable.”

But that assumption belongs to an earlier era.

Today, traffic patterns are shaped not just by drivers, but by software. And software does not share local sensibilities.

Nowhere does the Environmental Assessment meaningfully examine:

• The combined effect of upgrading both bridges
• Diversion from I-95 during congestion
• The role of real-time navigation systems
• Impacts on residential streets and safety

Instead, the project is evaluated as if each bridge exists in isolation. It does not.

If this corridor begins to function as an alternative to I-95, the consequences will be felt across Westport:

• Increased traffic through residential neighborhoods
• Safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists
• Noise and air quality impacts
• Changes to the character of a federally recognized historic district

These are precisely the kinds of indirect and cumulative effects that federal law requires agencies to consider.

No complex modeling is needed to understand the risk. The map already shows:

• A connected route
• Fewer constraints
• A faster alternative to a congested highway
• Numerous Waze alternative routes from the Post Rd and through residential neighborhoods south of the Post Road

The question is not whether traffic will use the corridor. The question is why the state has not fully evaluated that possibility.

At VersoFest’s headline concert Friday night, Westport Library executive director Bill Harmer introduced Wyclef Jean to a packed Trefz Forum, saying, “What you’re experiencing here does not exist in any other public library in this country.”

I’d argue hardly anything exists like VersoFest in any institution at all.

Each year, the days-long music festival features performances, installations, business insights and author discussions that entertain, enlighten and engage.

It has also galvanized a unique community of renowned musicians, artists, industry professionals and journalists to support VersoFest in myriad ways. At any event you’ll see legendary recording artists, transformative business professionals, and Westport’s own media stars.

And of course Grammy-winning Wyclef Jean, the powerhouse recording artist/ writer/producer, and co-founder of the Fugees.

Imagine the library packed with 800 people dancing and hollering lyrics as though they were in a place that’s not a library.

While expertly riffing through instruments and singing hits — both his (“Killing Me Softly With His Song,” “Maria Maria”) and covers (“Jump Around”) — Wyclef’s inexhaustible exuberance emitted some sort of particle hallucinogen that caused everyone to go nuts. Even those who had quietly saved seats on the “grandstand” could hardly resist the urge to stand up and go moderately nuts.

Toward the end Wyclef welcomed kids to climb on stage and rock out with him, proving both his multi-generational appeal and his being a great guy.

Saturday offered a series of talks, culminating in a performance and discussion with David J. of Bauhaus.

The first was an interview with Claire Dederer on “Monsters, a Look at What to Do with Great Art by Bad People.” In part, her book questions how we can accept artistic works as important, even masterpieces, despite the  the lascivious and sometimes criminal behavior of men who create them.

The discussion with the journalist Hilarie M. Sheets rambled for about 15 minutes before finally hitting on the subject: why the works of convicted or accused predators such as Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Picasso and Hemingway are still considered creative diadems.

A tough question to tackle, especially in our current cancel culture. The once-acceptable masculinity of Picasso and Hemingway is now often viewed as toxic. However, the nascency and naiveté of then-emerging “mass marketing” overlooked their womanizing (or worse), and promulgated their brooding character as the ideal of manliness.

Does historical context disallow cancellation? Seemingly yes, but why? In the light of #MeToo it’s important to know what we’re seeing or hearing, and understand its context.

Next, a rock star who was definitely not a monster: Tom Petty. Adria, his daughter and a well-known rock music director and managing partner of Tom’s estate, spoke with Sam Hendel, a pioneer in the music industry.

Adria recounted little-known stories about her dad, such as his donating all of the revenue, in perpetuity, from his hit ‘90s Christmas song, “Christmas All Over Again” to Special Olympics. And during his concerts. audience members could submit song requests by writing them on a roll of butcher paper. The band honored every request.

At one point the discussion veered dangerously into a seminar sales pitch for “uber deluxe” packages of records and random souvenirs. A Petty superfan might find merit in this but, honestly, who can blame her? We’re all selling something.

She promptly re-engaged with us though, and continued telling humorous anecdotes about her famous father, making him less an icon and more a caring, quick-witted human being.

Lastly, a woman who defended herself against monsters, actress Gina Gershon, discussed her memoir “AlphaPussy” with former CNN anchor (and Westport resident) Alisyn Camerota.

I’m not crazy about the title. True, young Gina possessed a wherewithal that many women at her age and in her situation may not have had. But that doesn’t make her “alpha” and another “beta,” as the title “AlphaPussy” suggests. I was expecting a self-aggrandizing monologue.

I was wrong. Gina was entertaining, and had great rapport with Alisyn. She talked about meeting Prince when he considered casting her in “Purple Rain,” and sneaking into a cinema and stumbling onto a porn flick (she grew up in the “porn capital of the world.”)

Mostly though, I loved the questions from the audience. Women asked about inner strength and initiative, viewing Gina as a warrior in a minefield of sexual judgment and assumptions.

Capping off that evening was a performance and discussion with alt-rock superstar David J. He’s credited with “spearheading the post-punk alternative music scene of the early 1980s.”

His crowd was smaller, but passionate. David received a standing ovation as soon as he walked on stage.

He read stirring poems from his new book, “Rhapsody, Threnody & Prayer,” including a haunting one about meeting Kurt Cobain 2 years before his suicide. (Kurt was lying in a fetal position in his wife’s dressing room).

David then gave a heartfelt and energetic performance of a few of his popular songs, before speaking with author and documentarian Douglas Rushkoff.

Best of all, David attended almost all of VersoFest’s events over the weekend — and was impressed by every one of them.

Then they expanded across Long Lots Road, opening Lyfe Café for breakfast, lunch and coffee.

Now comes a third Lyfe.

They’re taking over the Greenology/Jack’s Coffee space next door — the latest in a series of coffee shops there. Soon, it will open as Sweet Lyfe.

As first reported by WestportMoms, the new spot will feature high-protein Greek frozen yogurt, soft serve ice cream, small-batch gelato, smoothies, açaí bowls, imported candy and more.

Plus, “a chocolate and pistachio fountain.”

As Frank Sinatra sort of sang, “That’s Lyfe!”

Sweet Lyfe will move in soon next to (left side, not shown) Pizza Lyfe.

Because the home is over 50 years — in fact, the 7,700-square foot Tudor with 8 bedrooms and 8 1/2 bathrooms, once owned by Lucie Bedford (of Westport’s leading philanthropic family) and her husband, Briggs Cunningham (a race car driver and America’s Cup winner), set on 3.55 acres with 200 feet of Long Island Sound waterfront, is exactly 100 years old — the HDC can delay demolition for 180 days.

It cannot, however, prevent it.

Tony Hwang — the state senator from Fairfield who, before redistricting, represented parts of Westport and Weston — will not run for a 7th term.

The Republican announced his decision Monday. Including earlier service in the House of Representatives, he said that after nearly 18 years it is time to “ begin the next chapter of my life.”

As the Saugatuck River rises by a few inches over the next decades, clearance under the 143-year-ol span will diminish.

The state Department of Transportation is considering that, in its plans for rehabilitation or replacement.

But the rise will not be confined to the Cribari Bridge alone.

Consider the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge downtown.

Very little river traffic now passes underneath the Post Road — a few kayaks and canoes, mostly at low tide.

But CTDOT is looking ahead.

A project (formally #0158-0980) would replace the current structure with a drawbridge:

Steve Lance — the “06880” reader who spotted the plan, while searching for information on the Cribari Bridge — reached out to CTDOT.

James Barrows, who serves as manager for the Cribari project, responded.

“Work would not begin until #0158-0214 (the Cribari Bridge) is completed,” he said. “CTDOT would not want to disrupt traffic on two major crossings simultaneously.

“However, we see it as an important next component in making the Saugatuck River navigable as far upriver as possible.”

Barrows said that while the drawbridge would initially be open only far occasional traffic, it could adopt a regular schedule to allow more watercraft to pass through than currently do.

He noted that the entire operation would take “only 6 to 8 minutes.” Traffic disruption would be “minimal,” he said.

Barrows — who was at DOT’s recent public meeting at Town Hall — said, “our intention is to involve residents, business owners and other stakeholders as early and often as possible” in the project planning.

The music/media/and more festival once again entertained, inspired and delighted thousands. Concerts, panels, workshops and art exhibits drew a wide array of guests.

Some wanted to hear music; others, to hear insights. All were thrilled that the Westport Library offers options unlike any other institution, anywhere.

David Roth and Kerry Long directed the 1991 musical. Based on the Book of Genesis, it tells the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, and Noah and the flood.

Longtime media teacher Jim Honeycutt created these “nutshells,” part of “06880”‘s continuing coverage of Players, yesterday and today.

He notes that some of actors in this show went on to bigger things.

Mia Gentile (Eve) starred on Broadway in “Kinky Boots.” She also made it onto “Good Morning America,” with hilarious Stanley Steemer ads.

Jacob Heimer (Adam) starred on Broadway in “Beautiful.” Adam Kaplan (Japheth) went on to star on Broadway too, in “A Bronx Tale.”

Drew Angus (Ham) is now a successful recording artist.

The Weston High School senior balances schoolwork* with performing, songwriting and producing music events.

His songwriting draws inspiration from artists like Noah Kahan, Lewis Capaldi and Olivia Rodrigo, blending introspective lyrics with an acoustic sound.

This fall, Owen heads to Berklee College of Music in Boston. Before he goes — and the world learns about him — he stopped by the Westport Library, for a wide-ranging chat.

It was a great morning. My only regret is I forgot to ask him to bring his guitar.

I stand 3,400 miles from home, dressed in surgical scrubs and a mask that hides my age and inexperience.

The operating room lights are bright. I feel at once comfortable and unnerved.

The scene is relatively familiar. I have been volunteering with the International Esperanza Project for 4 years.

But our surgical staff is makeshift by American standards. My mother, an accredited surgeon, will be performing reconstructive surgery after a gunshot wound to the eye.

I — a 17-year-old high school student — will be responsible for handing her the vital tools she needs. I shake off my discomfort, and arrange the surgical tools on a metal tray that stands within my mother’s reach.

IEP provides high quality medical care to Guatemalan citizens who lack these resources. Every September I travel to Patzun, Guatemala with my mother to offer free medical care to individuals and families with circumscribed access to quality health care.

Our patients live in poverty, and frequently suffer from long-neglected health issues that have festered over time.

On any given day I move between numerous roles, taking and monitoring patient vitals, stocking operating rooms with surgical supplies, and soothing anxiety in children who may be visiting a doctor for the very first time.

My work with IEP forces me to engage with my greatest personal challenge: a sometimes haunting sense of self-doubt. While the imposter syndrome was certainly justified in my role among such experienced individuals, I often question whether I have the competence and experience to chase the accomplishments I want to call my own.

But by committing myself to stepping away from the familiar, whether geographically or intellectually, I can now call “positive risk-taker” as part of my identity.

The organization and compassion that Team Hope put forth during one week is unbelievable. From seeing thousands of clinic patients to performing hundreds of surgeries, the team blends seamlessly together even if most of them just met.

It doesn’t matter where you’re from, or where you’re going. If you come to Guatemala, you join a family. One that has dance parties during late night hospital trips, and one with some of the most gentle teachers out there, supporting and guiding you through a high stress environment that can be hard to adapt to.

During the most recent trip, we posted about a little girl suffering with childhood eye cancer. Both eyes had been removed at a young age, and her family could not afford prosthetic ones.

Within 24 hours, the Westport community raised $6,000. It was unbelievable to see how a group of people could be so generous to someone so close to my mom and me, yet so far from them.

I am so excited for the International Esperanza Project to come to Westport, this time in person. The event is April 2 at Hudson Malone (6 p.m.).

It is an honor being given the opportunity to speak about how much this trip impacted me. Now I have friends all over the world, and most importantly, so do all the patients.

Saturday’s “Hero to Hero” event drew a large, passionate crowd to the Saugatuck Rowing Club.

“Hero” is a non-profit that help highly qualified military members transition to first responder careers. It’s a win-win-win — for the servicemembers, their employers, and the entire community.

Locally, 5 Westport Fire Department members are graduates of the program.

This weekend’s event raised awareness of “Hero to Hero” — and raised funds for an independent film, which will raise even more funds for the organization.

The “Blue Bunny” film project is led by Rita Marcocci, a Westport resident and award-winning producer. She says:

“Our community came together in a powerful way — united by purpose, storytelling, and a shared commitment to those who have served our country.

“The fundraiser was a reminder of what’s possible when community, creativity and compassion align. From heartfelt remarks by veterans to the overwhelming generosity in the room, and the passion behind Senator Blumenthal’s speech, the evening reflected the very mission we stand behind: supporting our veterans as they transition from active duty into meaningful roles as first responders, while using storytelling to shine a light on the realities of veteran mental health.

Everyone who has heard the Bedford Middle School Jazz Band knows they’re special.

Now music educators all over the state know too.

The group performed as a “showcase ensemble” for the Connecticut Music Educators Association All-State conference, at the Connecticut Convention Center.

Gregg Winters’ 25 student musicians’ set included “Front Burner,” “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “The Girl from Ipanema” and “On Broadway,” a mix of swing, Latin and contemporary styles. All students also performed improvised solos.

This may be a first, in Staples’ long sports history:

For 3 consecutive years, a Manchester sibling served as captain of the Staples High School ski team.

And … all 3 received the Coaches’ Award at the end of their senior year, for their contributions to the program.

Congratulations, Logan (2024), Max (2025) and Ella (2026)!

PS: Their father, Jeff Manchester, earned plenty of awards too, as a Staples wrestler back in the day.

Speaking of teenagers: The Westport Senior Center is looking for high school students to volunteer in their Tech Hub on Thursdays (3 to 4:30 p.m.).

It’s a flexible opportunity. Weekly emails are sent to check availability.

This is a great chance for tech-savvy youngsters to show what they know — and give back to their community. Most probably have experience already, helping their grandparents (and parents).

The Riverwalk — stretching from the Taylor parking lot all the way behind the Levitt Pavilion, ending at Deadman Brook — is one of Westport’s hidden jewels.

Soon, we’ll have one more way to access it — again.

Melissa Newman — a longtime Westporter, and Jazz at the Post favorite — kicks off the series’ first-ever Voices of Spring festival, this Thursday (VFW Post 399; shows at 7:30 and 8:45 p.m.; dinner from 7).

And finally … on this date in 1930, the Motion Picture Production Code began. It imposed strict guidelines on sex, crime, religion and violence in film, until it was replaced in 1968 with 4 ratings: G(eneral), M(ature), R(estricted to under 16, unless accompanied by an adult) and X (no one under 16 admitted).

But 2 of the properties proposed for that redevelopment project recently changed hands.

As first reported by Westport Journal, Spinnaker Real Estate Partners — a Norwalk-based commercial real estate firm that has developed mixed-use properties in South Norwalk and New Haven — bought 606 Riverside Avenue for $12.795 million, and 96 Franklin Street for $3.25 million.

The larger Riverside Avenue site includes Minutemen Cleaners and 2 other businesses. Previously, it was an automobile dealership. The smaller nearby property is a parking lot.

Spinnaker has not yet disclosed plans for the site. They did not respond to requests for comment.

Will they try to recreate some elements of the Hamlet project — the retail/ residential/hotel/marina plan rejected last year by the Planning & Zoning Commission?

Some residents applauded some parts of the proposal, developed by ROAN Ventures. Others found it too dense, too massive, too out of character for the neighborhood.

New commercial development in the area — particularly around dilapidated 606 Riverside Avenue — could be the next step for Spinnaker. It would follow the renovation pioneered by Gault that brought the Whelk, other businesses and apartments to the area near Bridge Square (and which, when proposed, was also hotly debated).

New apartments a few steps from the train station could attract both young people, and older Westporters looking to downsize. Spinnaker has experience with transit-oriented development: Their Platform apartments are just steps from the South Norwalk station.

Hamlet’s hotel idea was welcomed by some. Others questioned the economics of a boutique property with just a few dozen rooms, in the shadow of I-95.

After the P&Z squelched the Hamlet, ROAN threatened a massive 8-30g affordable housing development. They later withdrew that plan.

Spinnaker has not previously pursued 8-30g projects. Their work leans toward projects like SoNo Central, a 150-unit apartment building with 3,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, and The Audubon, luxury apartments near Yale New Haven Hospital and the Audubon Arts District.

ROAN proposed to renovate and “re-skin” the 21 Charles Street office building opposite Zucca Gastrobar. The structure has been a thorn in the side of many locals. Spinnaker did not buy that property, however.

Spinnaker’s purchases also did not include any riverfront property. ROAN’s plans for water taxis were derided by some. Others liked the idea of a marina, and the concept of opening up the river — now hidden behind nondescript buildings, and a boatyard.

All of which is to say: Saugatuck development may soon be back in the news.

In which case, it will share headlines with another Saugatuck project: the future of the Cribari Bridge.

The 2 would not be related — except for their impact on traffic through the area.

That is an important consideration.

One of ROAN’s proposals involved rethinking and synchronizing traffic lights, from I-95 Exit 17 down Charles Street and Riverside Avenue, to the bridge.

Whatever Spinnaker decides, that would be a welcome step toward solving some of the thorniest issues Saugatuck has seen in its long, storied history.
