Ship Building

Basically there are many ways to build/construct a model ancient ship. A very unique activity which I personally enjoyed it the most among all other activities organised in 8GTS.
I believe the troop no longer organise such activity so a few ex-scouts and I have decided to build a ship and took some pictures along the process so you guys could have an idea how a model ship could be constructed.

This is the way we learned from our seniors and had definitely improvised slightly.
Do PM me if you guys have any question .
Here are some pictures that I had taken.

This is one of the first few steps that you should do. Obtain a thick wood in the middle to act as the keel.
Obtain a big plank and cut them to "U" shapes or any shape you want your ship to look like.

Next you may add the mopsticks to the keel where the mopsticks will act as the masts. Gentle reminder , traditionally the middle mast will be the tallest follow by the one behind(the last one) and then the front which is the shortest.

Ensure they are symmetrical, straight and at 90 degrees angle.

Basic equipments and materials that are needed to this stage is :-
1. Mopsticks
2. Thick wood
3. Planks
4. Ratans
5. L-brackets

6.Glue gun
7.Glue sticks
8.Saw
9.Jigsaw

Anyway the bow of the ship isn't shaped yet. Sorry but you guys have to wait for the next update !

Present Range Of Scouting In PFS And Causes To It ( Part 1)

Hey everyone, I am the current 8GTS ATL and also the Combined Scouts Council Chairman. I am here to share and acknowledge all of you on the present condition of scouting in the Grand Old Lady. As we know, Penang Free School is well-known for its scouts which have part of the School's traditions and it came along with its developments too. However, scouting is getting very passive and the Troops are left out. I assume that a number of you who are reading this would probably say that irresponsible leaders and their slackness are the main factors that have brought this to the scouting environment. However, this is not 100% true. There are many other reason that has lead to the partial demise of Troops is PFS.
GSMs' or SMs' are individuals that play a big role and carry a big burden of their shoulders to lead the Troops and bring on the right track with the help of the Troop Leaders. Unfortunately, the Scouters have failed to perform the task as adults and guiders to the scouts. For instance, whenever the EXCOs' plan and try to organize a camp for the scouts, the Scouters will give feedback such as " I wont be around on those dates" , " I have some other task to do " and so on. What are we are asking for?? A lifetime commitment with Troops? No, we are only requesting for a few days and it is because the School Rules says so or else we would everything by ourselves. In that case, the SM are reluctant to spend their time with us or support our event or activities. Whenever, they are questioned they who answers that do not make sense. Next, there aren't any co-operation among the SMs'. A Troop is assigned to have 2-3 teachers who are the Scouters. However, none of them are willing to take charge whenever there is an activity. This is not only applies for them to be on duty during camps or activities but also when we ( EXCOs') ask them for their signature to acquire permission for the school ground to organize our events. A few weeks ago, I myself went up to the SM of 8GTS to get his signature so that the ASSTC could be organized. This was the feedback from him " I'm not the main person incharge, how can your GSM push everything to me?? He is the head and he is suppose to deal with all this, we are the assistant and we only help if the condition needs". I told him that the condition that he is very much needed for now as the GSM wont be around during the tentative dates of the ASSTC. He resisted to sign by giving the same answer and asked me to leave. Is that how, things work??

Congrats to Probationary ATLs' Lim Boon Yeong and Chew Chin Chai for leading the Troop to the CGL Campfire. They tried at their level best to achieve something. And guess what??? They got 2nd Runners Up. Even though we have lost to maintain our previous victory but we should be happy to bring back the 1st trophy for the year 2013. So......lets see what happens next year. Adios.

It has been at least 4-5 years since I contributed to this blog and it feels good to share my thoughts once again to the new members .Well , I actually do have lots of ideas and ways to improve the troop but I have been questioning our new member's attitude and whether are they up for new challenges I might have for them.

Ever since I left in 2008, my biggest regret or what I would say ,my mistake was not to focus on scouting knowledge and passing down it down to my juniors . When I was appointed as Troop Leader ,my primary goal was very clear which was to better than the previous batch of leaders in the past, in terms of performing better in Annual gatherings/campfires , having more members , and mostly trying to organise the 'best' Combined Training Camp up to date. Everyone wanted to emulate the success of the batch from 1998-2000 if I am not mistaken and it became a benchmark for all future scouts from that year onwards .Everyone was only looking forward to the end year camp because we know there will be 50 over girls attending our camp and having practically 4 months to plan and organise that camp was a complete waste of time.

If we had used that 4 months to teach knowledge to our juniors ,I believed we could have been the sole producers of King Scouts in Penang on a consistent basis .Let me get straight to title , scouting knowledge is GOLD ! Let me list out a few knowledge or skill that every scout should know :

1.Fire Building.
Yes, fire is easy to produce with matches and lighters no doubt .When I left the troop , the knowledge on how to build fire was there and I hope it still exist up to date .Now here comes the tricky part .How do you build one without matches and lighters?

a)Flint and Steel .

If I am not mistaken flint is made from magnesium , and when you scrap it against steel (Use 'Parang') it produces lots of spark to start off your fire .Estimated time ~ seconds if you are good at it .

b)Friction with wood and bamboo
This is obviously the hardest of them all.This could take forever as a proper technique is required .I would love to go back school one day and experiment this method out .Tell me if you are up for it .

2)Compass & Map reading
Well everyone has an iPhone and other smart phones to navigate us to our locations. So why bother using a compass right? Well navigating using a map and compass requires skills and precision .There is no way I will be able to teach it here .

3) Building gadgets.
No surprise what we are famous for ,Bamboos & Teikkos which made Ah Chun (Probably the sole provider of bamboos in Penang) a millionaire = ) What happened to chopping them down ? Well , I once tried to chop down some along Cheeseman Road and the bamboo weren't as straight or equally as good quality than those being bought .So I hope that explains why this isn't practice anymore .

Well the thought of spending $$$ to buy bamboos yearly doesn't bother me .What bothers me was us spending to beat the other patrols because we were being evaluated by the Exco's to decide the Overall Champion. Building a big gateway or fortress isn't survival ! I remember being asked by Mr.X during a horseshoe

Mr X: Your fencing and gateway isn't strong enough to protect your members from wild animals.

Being a good member, I never like to question my leader because the fear of taking more pumps during horseshoe.

Let's face the facts that if an elephant came charging towards our gadgets ,how could any fencing withstand such pressure?

Therefore, there are no reasons to build such mighty gadgets and sky scrapping towers .Impressing the crowd leads to waste of money and it contradicts with our whole idea of building gadgets for survival in the wild .

4) Fishing
How about making a fishing rod made out of bamboo or making a spear and dive in to the sea ( I would never recommend this though) .Fishing was never taught in scouts sadly during my entire time in scouts . Fishing was easy for me cause my dad taught me but it was with professional fishing rods .Any ex-scouts would like to step forward and teach the current scouts?

There are actually so many more knowledge that our scouts don't practice any more such as morse code, climbing ropes , backwoodsman , and the list goes on and on .The fact we replace them with banner competitions , drilling ,miniature ship building ,mascot , spending weeks on dances and sketches , doing logbook , all makes us looks like girlguides when you come to think of it .That isn't scouting . If I could turn back time , would have never involve my members in such waste-of-time-activities .

As for the scout car, I believed it is a tradition but why involve our scouts for so many months to build one when they literally don't even have any of the basics of scouting .If I am not mistaken , there were some classes done last year and my question would be :Where is the scout car in the end? .

Current leaders and members ,I only hope you don't repeat the mistakes of past leaders including mine .Do what you think that is essential to scouting .Only then , I believe more students will join scouts in future .

My conclusion is we need to revive back the lost scouting knowledge and it is never too late .No point involving the troop members in activities which has no purpose in scouting.

Present scouts if you are willing to learn any of the above , I would gladly like to help .

Memoirs of a Sea Scout: Entry 021

Crap! What's with this traffic jam? We're so gonna be late. I don't think I'm ready to start the camp doing push-ups. God knows how many push-ups I have to do for the whole duration of the camp? If I could, I would jump off this lorry so I can run towards the campsite. Unfortunately, I've to be at the back of this lorry to ensure the competitions don't topple over and ruin all our hard work.

Come to think of it, it is quite cool riding at the back of the lorry with the wind blowing in your face. That is if it is moving. Now that it is crawling like a snail, I'm choking from all the toxic fumes! Horns blaring from all sides isn't quite the symphony you look forward to so early in the morning.

It is just a few bends ahead. I hope we can make it in time. Even if we don't, I hope the EXCOs will show some leniency due to the unexpected traffic jam, however unlikely that may be. Man, this is really no way to start a camp. Get moving already, people! I've a camp to attend!!!

The Saga Continues

Long have we awaited for the next installment of Memoirs of a Sea Scout. In fact, the last we heard of our favourite sea scout was way back in 2008! What was the cause of this hiatus? Was it a court injunction stopping the release of more details from the recovered journal belonging to the mysterious sea scout? Why is this matter being brought up again after such a long time? Is it due to the mysterious sea scout finally ending his schooling life that more details from the journal can be revealed now without much detriment to him?

Has this anything to do with the world coming to an end on 21st December 2012? Is it possible that the webmasters aren't afraid of any litigation brought forward to them since it will soon be the end of days that they have thrown caution to the wind and decided to reveal all instead? Has the sea scout himself finally given his blessing to this series?

It all doesn't really matter now, does it? As long as new entries will be coming up from now on. How long do we have to wait for the next installment, you ask? Not long at all. The next entry will be released on...

Reviving the Scout Car Grand Prix

The Scout Car Grand Prix or as known as Soap Box Derby is a pedal race which was first introduced by the Penang Free School B-P Guild in 1969 . It was then taken over by the PFS Rover Scout Screw and the Combined Scouts Council to inherit this event.

Here's one of them !

In 1972 , over 30 scout groups and 14 guides & rangers companies participated in this successful event. There, they've manage to present 11 scouts cars which were engineered with only scrap materials and spare parts of a bicycle. In some of cars, there were even up to 9 gears and I’m still wondering how on earth could they do that because it was an astonishing achievement . In 1974 , the forth scout car grand prix took place in Gurney Drive which attracted numerous crowds and tourist which made this event very well known. That venue was the perfect spot due to the long straight road with minimal traffic till Gurney Plaza was built. From there, everything has changed .

Most ingeniously built scout car

However , after the year 2002 this prestigious event was called to a halt . Why ? Dont bother asking me , Im still figuring out what had happened. Some said , its all thanks to the the new Gurney Plaza .

Then recently , our new principal En Jalil Bin Saad who's also an ex-free decided to revive the Soap Box Derby. He suggested that this event will be held during Co-Curriculum day, if we don't have enough participating schools. Few weeks back , Mr Lye Poh Chye from 1st Georgetown South called all the representatives from each troop to the teacher's canteen to discuss about this matter and have decided to have a workshop regarding how to build this scout car . He even suggested that we should track back to the ex-scouts who might still be having one of the cars to ease our burden. Not forgetting , everyone here is welcomed to help us out as we dont have a blue print or any idea how construct an awesome car .

Excited for this event? May this be the most anticipated activity for us scouts, sea scouts and also to the sister guides who MIGHT be reading this !

TTO and 6km/8km Journey

TTO and 6km/8km journey which was suppose to be held this Sunday will be postponed due to the very poor attendance. The dates for these activity will be posted in the near future and I hope this sickening problem will not repeat ever again before stern actions are taken on every single one .

Please do remember , if any activities held were to clash with your family event , I hope you guys will just sacrifice for once instead of just writing a pointless letter to excuse yourself. As the old says ,A team will always appreciate a great individual ifhe's willing to sacrifice for the group . By the way, these activities are only held once annually and Im pretty sure the troop isn't asking much from you guys. Last but not least , TUITIONS are not an excuse to relieve yourselves from any activities.

Troop Take Over 2012

One of the most anticipated event of the term is here. Troop Take Over is the time where probationary leaders and assistant leaders will be elected to lead the troop for the next term. They will be under strict evaluation under a period of 3 months or so. Then , the truly deserved ones will only be promoted to a permanent post. Attendance is COMPULSORY for ALL scouts from all forms. Scouts that could not attend this activity will be given a warning letter unless a valid reason is given. Details are as follows.

PCGHS Campfire

Time doesn't wait as the troop has already participated 3 campfire & gatherings already .
For the annual PCGHS campfire which was held on 21st of April , 15 of our seniors scouts have participated and have put their very best effort into it .

Congratulations to them even though they've only managed to grab the 1st Runner up and Best Supporter trophy .
What can we expect ? There's approximately 10 participating schools and we got SECOND PLACING.
Moreover , the overall champions were MBS ROVERS which included BOY & GIRL Scouts . That's a hell of an advantage for them.

Since when we're PFS 8TH ??

It seems to be a very unique pattern about our troop winning the trophies in this campfire as you can see the pattern here :

To the upcoming leaders , please put your very best effort for your future despite the current condition of the troop is much poorer than other rival schools . Make a change and you'll definitely never regret for what you have done .

CGL Gathering and Campfire have just passed and once again congratulations to the scouts for grabbing the Overall Champion this year !
Not forgetting , they've managed to win the Best Miniature , Best Dance and Best Field Decoration too.

Though , people might say that the number of participating schools are very small but we know that the competition there was though ! So close your ears for once and just be happy for what we've achieved .
