The Statue of Khodja Nasreddin, situated in the central city square of Bukhara, is a cherished landmark, widely recognized and frequently photographed. This iconic bronze statue was established in 1979, and crafted by sculptor Yakov Shapiro. It stands prominently on a rectangular pedestal, embodying the spirit of the beloved East Asian folk hero, Khodja Nasreddin.

Khodja Nasreddin is celebrated across Central Asia for his unique blend of qualities-simplicity paired with wisdom, and traditionalism coupled with originality. He is known for his wit, eloquence, and the masterful way he handles language. Through his stories, Nasreddin cleverly ridicules societal vices such as greed, hypocrisy, and cowardice, always finding humorous solutions to complex problems. His tales, filled with satire and shrewdness, have cemented his status as a folk hero among the diverse ethnic groups of the region.

The statue depicts Khodja Nasreddin riding his donkey, a companion from whom he is rarely separated. He is adorned in traditional attire, including a skullcap and oriental shoes with distinctively curved tips. His posture is relaxed, with one hand waving in greeting, and a sly smile that hints at his cunning nature, setting a jovial tone for the monument.
