Is Smarty really a smart templating option?

When it comes to templating in PHP, there are basically two options. The first option is to use PHP to create a template engine. This approach simply mixes PHP code with HTML. Although this approach is fast from a pure script-execution point-of-view, many would argue that the PHP syntax is messy and difficult to maintain when mixed with presentation, because PHP works well for programming, but not so well for templating.

The second option is to make presentation void of all programming code, and instead use simple tags to indicate where application content is revealed. This approach is common within many template engines and programming languages. The idea is to keep the templates focused squarely on presentation, void of application code, and with as little overhead as possible.

This second approach is the one being used by the Smarty templating engine, a web template system written in PHP that is intended to simplify compartmentalization, allowing the presentation of a web page to change separately from the back-end. Smarty generates web content by the placement of special Smarty tags within a document. These tags are processed and substituted with other code. In this way Smarty allows PHP programmers to define custom functions that can be accessed using Smarty tags.

By using this type of templating engine websites attain a convenient separation between business logic and presentation logic, with the added benefit of implementing content caching. On the frontend it allows users to customize, update and theme their websites.

Among the goals pursued by the Smarty design are:

Compliment PHP, not replace it
Fast development/deployment for programmers and designers
Quick and easy to maintain

However, Smarty is often criticized for replicating features that PHP already posses, leading to slow speed and inefficiency. Some developers argue that Smarty uses a pseudo-language that creates additional work for the processor. They also see it as a poor replacement for full PHP frameworks, although Smartys developers have made clear that "Smarty is not an application development framework. Smarty is not an alternative to Zend Framework, CodeIgniter, CakePHP, or any of the other application development frameworks for PHP. Smarty is a template engine, and works as the (V)iew component of your application. Smarty can easily be coupled to any of the engines listed above as the view component."

The fact is that Smarty is immensely popular and is integrated into many websites and frameworks. It seems to suffer from the same type of criticisms that JavaScript, which although it's not considered the best option in terms of efficiency, it has spread all over the Internet.

Spotify is one of the largest streaming music in Europe, currently offering over 8 million tracks for play. Clearly this is a serious web application with some enterprise-level technology powering it.

Nevertheless, Spotify chose to skillfully weave all this beefy tech muscle back into a WordPress content management system.
Wheels are not for the reinventing.

WordPress as a Daily Tech Newspaper
Mashable's rise has been even more amazing than that of WordPress. Originally conceived in 2005 as a showcase for Web 2.0 mashups, the site has evolved to overtake the likes of Gizmodo and Engadget in the hypercompetitive tech/gadgets/social media news arena.
Mashable's biggest problem has always been exposing its best content. As it publishes so frequently, often valuable, timely content can sink before it ever gets a chance to gain traction.

Mashable's latest theme tries to tackle this by using Facebook, Twitter and Digg to bubble its trending stories back to the surface. It seems to be working, as Mashable is currently second only to Huffington Post on Technorati's list.
Thankfully, Mashable has backed up its open-source credibility by releasing this most recent WordPress theme to the general public.

In order to customize the template you don't have to be a programmer and although some of the advanced options do require some coding, the authors provides you with embedded helpful hints to set you in the right direction.

Atahualpa Theme Options

You can design your own header graphic and upload one or more - the Atahualpa theme has a built-in header rotating function if you want to use it. You can have an area above the header graphic (or below it) for your company logo, RSS and comments feed and a search box. You can style this area to blend into the outer background or you can give it a style of its own and make it stand out.

You can choose where to put the page and or category menus and style their lines and colors. You can make the top level link clickable, or make it non-clickable thus forcing your readers to choose from a drop-down menu.

You can have a solid color for the off-page background or, if you prefer something more jazzy, you can upload your own image.

You can use a fluid width which adjusts to the width of your reader's screen, or you can use a fixed width of your choice.

You can have from 1 to 5 columns. You can choose which pages each of the sidebars is displayed on.
The design of the widgets is akso totally customizable. Choose to blend them into the background or make them stand out. You have control over the colors, lines and spacing.
The center column can be customized on its background colors, lines, kicker and header styles, next and previous navigation.

Within the theme you can also decide whether to display full posts or extracts on the front page - and have control over the length of extracts displayed.

You can style the footer area, adding in your own links and also add extracts of HTML code before the /body tag - perfect for adding your statistics monitoring.

Monochrome Pro is a magazine-style theme for Wordpress packaged with an AJAX post slideshow, a custom theme admin page to easily manage and customize Monochrome, author archives, two page templates, multi-tier drop down menus, utilizes custom fields options and a CSS framework to aid in customization. Now that’s a mouth-full.
With Monochrome, you get:

INSTALLATION

Unzip the downloaded file
Upload the entire “Monochrome″ folder to your “/wp-content/themes/” folder
Log in into your WordPress control panel
Click the Presentation tab
Select the “Monochrome” screenshot

CONFIGURATION

GETTING STARTED: Monochrome creates a new administration page in the Presentation tab of your Wordpress admin panel to easily manage an update the categories that you want to display on the homepage. View the theme options page. Type in the category id’s and you’re ready to go!
PHOTOS & CUSTOM FIELDS: This theme uses custom fields to manage all photos and thumbnail photos. In your Wordpress settings, you can change the dimensions on both thumbnail and medium sized photos. Change the thumbnail width to 128 px wide by 128px tall. Change the medium photo size to 575 px wide. Save the settings. Wordpress will resize every photo uploaded to the dimensions described above. After uploading the photo into Wordpress using the media uploader, Monochrome Pro automatically generates your thumbnail and slideshow images for your homepage (version 1.1 only). Don’t like the thumbnail Wordpress generated for you? Override it, by copying the link to this thumbnail photo and pasting it into the custom field value, with a key called “thumbnail.” Similarly, you can copy the link to the medium photo (575 pixels wide maximum) and paste it into the custom field value, with a key called “photo.” Here is a screenshot of all properly filled out fields.
YOUR AUTHORS PAGE: Monochrome comes packaged with an author archive (authors.php), which will display some author specific info pulled from the Users page in your Wordpress installation. In order for the author’s image to show up, you’ll need to place a jpg of the author titled by the author’s last name in the wp-content/themes/monochrome_lite/images/authors/ folder. For instance, mine is Allender.jpg, sized at 75px X 75px. Here is an example author page.
STYLES.CSS: Unlike most Wordpress themes which plug all the css in one file called styles.css, Monochrome utilizes the Blueprint CSS framework to help separate positioning, typography, forms and what I’ll refer to as custom or Monochrome specific styles. To edit all custom Monochrome specific styles, you’ll need to edit the file style.css in your wp/wp-content/themes/monochrome/ directory.

This theme utilizes a CSS framework called Blueprint. Who is credited for the ideas behind Blueprint? Some of the best designers on the web. They include Jeff Croft, designer for Blue Flavor, Khoi Vinh, design director for NYTimes.com, Nathan Borror, Christian Metts, Eric Meyer, Wilson Minor, Angus Turnbull, Olav Bjorkoy and a few others.
