It’s a thin line between Generative Art and Math Art. The difference, as I see it, is that there is a predictability to Math Art; we can determine what the outputted values will be, the joy is in coming up with a nice visualisation. Whereas with Generative Art we would prefer not to know the results until they are produced, the visualisation has to be able to surprise us.

So is this one Math Art or Generative Art? Could it be both?

I hope I never run out of new ways to visualise Perlin Noise.

This is not the video I showed at FOTB09 last week, but it is very similar. This was an earlier version, cut to a Yo La Tengo track. I think it was my lovely lady who advised that the girly vocal might distract from the visuals a little, so I recut it to something a bit more scuzzy for the benefit of the geek audience at FOTB. But I still like this track.

The screen I showed it on at Brighton Dome was huge, cinema sized, which would make anything look amazing. Watching it again all compressed and tiny, probably isn’t doing it justice. Again, credit has to lie mostly with Sean McCulloch, whose lovely code I have stomped all over and abstracted beyond recognition. The packed circles now form a node network, and draw connections between each other as they jiggle around. This is possibly the most over-engineered way of drawing a messy grey splodge imaginable.

Circle packings are very mathematically interesting, but I can’t say I understand it too deeply – I just liked the way they jiggled as they try to find their place. Try dragging and holding the larger ones.

Another twist on the Traer cloth physics.

You may have noticed I’ve stopped posting the source code for the fractally generated works, as the code is just the same every time, with tweaks here or there. If you want to try reproducing this one why not take the source code from an earlier work, and see if you can work it out. You’ll probably end up with something way better than my efforts that way.

Rendering to video again, but for different reasons. This runs in the browser just fine, but the OpenGL library required for the 3D is so big the bandwidth of a few thousand hits on this page would cost me a bomb. With all the performance, embedding and cross-browser issues I have suffered with this project, today I’m thinking I may as well have just used YouTube for all of it.

Rendering to video, rather than creating a ‘live’ applet to run in the browser (well some browsers) feels a bit like cheating, but this would have ground your machine to a halt. This is the Traer Physics Library again, in fact the source code is more or less exactly the same as #44, with the number of particles upped.
