Sabine, FontShop zu: Univers

Dear Ali,

thanks for your comment on our rating system. We had a similar concern when setting up the ranking: Sales do not necessarily reflect quality aspects of a font. For this reason we developed this scoring system:

Sales figures: 40%
Historical significance: 30%
Aesthetic quality: 30%

To rate the historical significance an the aesthetic quality, we approached international type experts.

You find all details if you klick on the red star on the left.

Kind regards

Sabine, FontShop

Ali Slater zu: Univers

There is something very flawed with your scoring system if it is putting Univers at No. 10. And Helvetica is obviously at No. 1 based on sales alone, but sales do not make something the best - It is overused and saturated.

Futura is being used to death in advertising and business signage right now, at least in Chicago. If Helvetica screams \"1980s,\" a few decades from now, Futura is going to scream \"2010s.\" (Which is pretty amazing, since not too long ago it still screamed \"early 1960s.\")

Sabine zu: Helvetica

Dear Typo,

the reason for Century not making it into the ranking is, that there is a broad range of century fonts, commercial as well as free ones. There are Century Roman, Century Oldstyle, Century Schoolbook and Century Nova to name a few.

• Please find more on Century fonts at wikipedia:
http://goo.gl/I5PKG

• More on the scoring criteria for this site:

Kind regards

Hey, I found at my work about 12 of these old school type discs just like this picture above. Not sure what type of machine they worked with. Do you have a clue? I would like to know if these are worth anything. Any info would be great! They are really neat, I have Helvetica ones, some scripts and old english looking ones.

Henk Groot Wassink zu: Lexicon

The Lexicon to me is the best typeface. It is timeless. It is modern but it also has a classical touch. NRC Handelsblad, a quality paper in the Netherlands uses this font for quite a few years. The Lexicon makes reading a pleasure. I noticed that people have familiar feeling when they see this typeface for the first time. My compliments to Bram de Does and the Enschede Font Foundry

and the other 99 typefaces that made it into the ranking:

Welcome to FontShop’s unique selection that differs from other typeface charts because it is both subjective and as objective as possible. By incorporating its own sales figures and various bestseller lists from the past ten years into the process (see “Scoring Criteria”), FontShop ensured that the users of the nominated typefaces also had an input into the selection.

The Jury: Roger Black (Danilo Black, Inc., New York/Monterrey, USA), Stephen Coles (Typographica, Oakland, USA), Jan Middendorp (Author, Berlin), Veronika Elsner (Elsner & Flake, Berlin), Bertram Schmidt-Friderichs (TDC, Mainz), Ralf Hermann (TypoForum, Weimar), Claudia Guminski (FontShop, Marketing, Berlin).
