One of the recurring problems we see in submissions on 10pens is incorrect comma usage. Here is a simple and clear guide on when and how to use commas.

10pens is a Free Resume Help and Free Essay Editing Service. Click here to submit to 10pens, or click here to review documents.

Lists - the most common use is when you are listing objects, attributes or anything else.
Examples: She is a smart, pretty, and interesting.
I am going to the grocery store to get milk, eggs, and cheese.

Parenthetical - when you are expressing a thought, but need to add some side information.
Example: The fox, which was quick, jumped over the lazy dog.
In this sample, the quickness of the fox is a parenthetical. Notice that the sentence can be complete without including the information between the commas, which is always true in parentheticals.

Separating clauses when using one of the following conjunctions: and, or, but, for, nor, so, yet.
When you have two closely related thoughts separated by one of those conjunctions, you need a comma.
Example: The chocolate is dark, but it is not too bitter.
The idea that the chocolate is dark and that it is not bitter are separate clauses, but are closely related to the thought of the sentence.

An introduction to the sentence – if your sentence needs an introduction before jumping into the main idea, you need a comma.
Example: This Tuesday, I am not going to school.

Before a quotation - when you are about to introduce a quotation into the main discussion, you need a comma to separate.
Example: “I wasn’t speeding,” she exclaimed with gusto.
Note that in this case the comma always goes inside the quotation marks.

For help with commas or anything else, you can submit your document to 10pens by going here.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

An Editing Service That Lets Others Review Your Resume – Free!
New York, July 6, 2010

10Pens.com is an exciting new service that brings together job seekers and professional editors in a revolutionary proof reading experience to get resume help. And it’s free.

Users upload a resume to the website and pick a reviewer to edit their work. Within hours, they receive a free resume review with comments and suggestions for improvement. They can then choose whether to pick the reviewer for a more comprehensive review.

Enterprising editors can also benefit from the service. 10Pens.com will offer them documents to be reviewed, and if enough positive feedback is received from submitters, they can start charging for their services.

“The goal is to do away with the standard practice of paying gobs of money to have your work reviewed by someone,” said Sidharth Kakkar, co-founder. “It relies on a transparent market to make the whole process effective and easy — qualities needed today more than ever in a turbulent and fast-changing job market.”

10Pens.com brings the power of crowd-sourcing to solve the toughest problems facing job seekers today. For college students and career changers, hitting the right note in your resumes, cover letters, and application essays can be a challenge.

10pens.com gives you the unique opportunity to have multiple sets of minds analyzing and annotating your work – to produce documents that make you stand out amongst formidable competition. For editing sharks, it is a way to put your red pencils to good use, gain a good reputation, add skills to your repertoire, and make some money while you are at it.

10pens.com is the brainchild of Sidharth Kakkar and Utsab Saha, who volunteered at Streetwise Partners, a New York City-based non-profit that pairs young professionals with mentees looking to make a career change or get a job. “The idea of 10Pens is that we bring this collaborative framework to everyone,” says Kakkar.

For more information, contact Sidharth Kakkar at sidharth@10pens.com or visit http://10pens.com

After months of working on the project, we have finally released the 10pens beta at http://10pens.com!

10pens.com aims at building a user community that helps each other with writing tasks by providing free editing services. Rather than the traditional online editors that charge several dollars per page, 10pens hopes to provide feedback and editing of your resumes, cover letters, papers, college applications, or anything else absolutely free!

For those doing the reviewing, there is an economic incentive in addition to garnering good will. Doing a good job on reviews, and getting good ratings will allow you to be able to charge money for them. You’ll still be able to do free reviews, but people will be able to pick you for paid reviews as well!

Try it out, visit http://10pens.com! to get feedback on your writing or resumes today!

At 10Pens we are faced with a rather unique challenge of organizing our team. First, our team is spread out across the various corners of the globe. I live in California; our designer lives in Serbia, and Sidharth is temporarily operating from his laddoo factory in India. (Yes, he owns a laddoo factory, and if you don’t know what a laddoo is, Sidharth will be more than happy to answer all of your questions pertaining to laddoos.)

There are about two hours total in the day, during normal waking hours, when we can even communicate with one another. Furthermore, we have not one, but two projects we are simultaneously building. (The other project is a new “people search engine” called Keeples, which you can read about here ). Finally, we even have two separate teams for each project.

Somehow, miraculously, we can still get things done. The question is — how?

Install Skype

There really is no substitute for face-to-face communication, but in the worst case, voice is still a whole lot better than text. In my experience, it is extremely easy to get into strange arguments over email and text. Somehow, without voice, misunderstandings occur very frequently and without warning. If you go for more than a week without any voice chats, the misunderstandings can pile up into something disastrous. Certainly, for the more serious topics, we definitely use voice rather than email. In fact, more than once we have violated this rule, and several heated debates have erupted over email and gchat which could have easily been avoided if had used voice instead.

I noticed that we have even developed a sixth sense for pending misunderstandings and arguments while we’re texting. Midway during a Gchat exchange, as soon as the conversation turns to a “complicated” topic, immediately we will just know that it’s time to switch over to Skype. Recently, we have actually imposed a rule to have a manditory Skype conversation at least once per day.

In spite of all these efforts, communication is still a challenge. But with some discipline, you can get around the problems.

I have found that it takes four attempts to succeed at anything that is “hard”. Whether it be launching a startup, applying for a job, or simply writing an essay — you are never going to get it right on your first try. Or your second try. MAYBE you’ll get it on your third. But in my experience, you will get your best results only after the fourth attempt.

I apply this philosophy for both 10Pens and Keeples. Instead of naively hoping that the projects will succeed the first time, I ASSUME the first try isn’t going to be quite what I expect. Instead of hoping for success, I hope for feedback — so that we can learn from our first experiences and try again. It is even on our product roadmap to have several iterations of the projects. Basically, our plan is to have one iteration of Keeples development, where we actually build the website. Then we market it. While we are marketing Keeples, we have one iteration of developing 10Pens. Then, while we are marketing 10Pens, we go back to the drawing board for Keeples and try again using the feedback we got during our marketing phase. That is, we build one website, then test it out on a population. Then we build it again, and repeat. I plan on putting at least four solid attempts into each project, 10Pens and Keeples, before I even think of calling it quits.

You could argue that you may not have the time nor the resources to try four times on a project. However, I would argue that if you are not capable of trying again after you fail, then you probably should not be launching a startup in the first place.

In early-mid 2009, I wanted to learn about all the steps of developing a website from the ground up. So, I put up a craigslist ad for someone to teach me, and found Greg, a homeless man with a laptop and pretty awesome PHP skills. I then “designed” the site myself, despite a total lack of any artistic skills, and built http://www.thesecretsservice.com from the ground up. Finally, I went about telling people about it and getting them to post to it (mostly through facebook).

My attempt at designing the site. Some of the secrets are pretty funny though.

The result is an idea that isn’t completely thought out, a design that’s pretty hard on the eyes, and front end execution that leaves something to be desired. But I did accomplish the objective of learning a lot about how to put a site together and get it going. It actually got a decent number of people submitting secrets, and still continues to get more visitors every month than I would expect. Finally, I learned the important lesson of: When it comes to a lot of things, there’s no substitute for professional experience.

So, when Utsab and I started working on Keeples and then 10pens, the first thing we decided was to get a great design for the site. For Keeples, we looked towards 99designs, and ran a contest that garnered a couple hundred entries despite the modest $600 prize (for how we did that, we’ll write another post). In the end, after reviewing so many options, we narrowed it down to three fantastic designers, and picked Yairko’s design, which is what you see on http://www.keeples.com.

As an aside, Yairko later told us that he used the money to help buy a wedding ring and to propose. Congratulations Yairko and his new fiancee!

An awesome idea for the Keeples homepage that Yairko came up with, which we probably would have never thought of.

We were so impressed with the other two shortlisted designers, we approached them for additional work as well. Kpp0209 was excited by our idea and he joined the Keeples team in exchange for equity, and we are working with him to design the parts of the site we want to put in our next version. And we then hired another designer from our Keeples contest, Simple&Clever to design 10pens – and he’s really a fantastic designer. When we wanted to speed up the process of putting together the site, we asked him about a HTML/CSS coder to make a few of pages for us, which will hopefully be done soon. In this way, we hope to produce a better site and faster, without a large cost.

While we have a very small budget for creating and marketing both Keeples and 10pens, we have to realize that our time has an economic value in lost wages. And that the best way to determine the value of the work we need to produce (like the site design and the front-end code) would be to take the value of the design itself in conjunction with how much it would cost to ask someone else to do it (the market value). In this case, we had these amazing designers make the pages, and because they leveraged the expertise they have and we don’t, in economic terms this was definitely a win-win.

While we are doing most of the legwork (the product features, the coding, the marketing, etc) ourselves, I think it’s important for us to continue to look for opportunities where we can gain by finding an expert who fits within our budget, and can help make our products better.

What are your experiences with tackling all parts of a project? Do you agree with my assessment that you’re better off getting some help, or do you like to do it all yourself? Tell us in the comments!

Because we’re not super popular and famous in blogosphere (or any sphere for that matter), we don’t have people asking us for interviews. However, that will not be stopping me from being interviewed about 10pens today, as I have found a loophole: I can interview myself. The below is a transcript from a verbal interview of me by me. It is not unedited.

Me: Sidharth, why don’t we start by you explaining where you came up with the name 10pens.
Me: Sure. Once the idea for 10pens had been fleshed out, we were trying to think of a name. It came to me when I was asleep and I dreamt about killer pens with guns that shot ink chasing me. I wouldn’t have minded the ink so much, but the color of the ink was this strange yellowish-brownish-ocher and that’s just disgusting.

Me: I see. Tell me a bit about what 10pens is.
Me: 10pens is a site Utsab and I are working on that aims to help college applicants and job seekers in their respective goals. It won’t be a destination for all the help one needs with those tasks, however. It will be focused specifically on college admissions essays and on resumes/cover letters.

Me: Great. You wrote before that the product was in an early development stage, is this still true?
Me: Yeah, we’re working on building the site right now. We have the design work pretty much done, and we’ve moved on to developing the product itself. We’ve also been working on getting the word out a little bit about what we’re building, to try to get feedback. Finally, we’re continually working on strategies for marketing this while staying under budget.

Me: Ah. And what is your ‘marketing budget?’
Me: Oh, I can’t really remember.

Me: Approximately?
Me: Approximately? Zero.

Me: Zero? Why are you so poor?
Me: Hey, watch it there buddy.

Me: Sorry. So, when will the site be up?
Me: Not sure. I think I’ll save that for a real interview

Me: Okay. Can you at least tell us a little bit about the nature of the site?
Me: We are hoping to provide a platform that will encourage the development of a user community interested in editing each others’ work on their college and job applications. There are very few options for getting your essays or job applications reviewed, and even fewer options for helping others by reviewing those essays and applications. We hope to provide such a service for people interested in using it.

Me: Okay. Is there anything you’d like to tell people that read this interview?
Me: Yes, Thanks for reading!! Please leave any remarks or ask any questions in the comments. Anything at all, and we will read/answer every one of them.
