The painters were here again today. They managed to get a coat on the west side siding, as well as finishing a coat on the west side gable. They got the rest of the porch primed, and finalized some trim. It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, but be nice on Saturday. He said that they’ll be back out on Saturday, but might be here tomorrow if the rain doesn’t come as anticipated.

He mentioned that they WERE going to come out last Sunday, and yes, he knew it was Sunday. He said that it was raining there at 6:30 in the morning, and that the rain was expected to clear out in the afternoon. He called his crew and told them that they weren’t going out … the rain stopped at about 9 and never started up again. I told him that we had no rain whatsoever out here. Oh well …

No pictures today. I’ll update with pictures after they finish on Saturday.

I hope to have most of the wood installed prior to our New Year’s Eve get-together.

Here’s a picture of some of the woodwork. The quartersawn red oak looks pretty nice. I imagine it will look even better once I get some finish on it.

So, we’re sitting here with an almost completed front, and a gray west side. Looks like the next best chance for good painting weather will be this Saturday. If all goes well, I should be able to get a few pictures to post.

On the inside, I’ve got one door frame cased, and only need the corner blocks, which, unfortunately, won’t be here until mid January. I told my sweetheart that I would MAKE cornerblocks if I had time, but … absent that, will bne putting up moulding sans cornerblocks…

I’ll start with a couple of exterior shots of the gable and the front of the house:

Next are some views of the completed porch. Well, almost completed. The floor still hasn’t been painted. It will be either Red or Terra Cotta, I can’t remember which.

The entryway:

The painter said that he wants to concentrate on finishing the gable whenever the weather permits so that he can get the lift out from in front of the house. He’s also hoping to have the porch finished by the end of Saturday, so that we can take the plastic off. I told him no hurry on the plastic, I kinda like the pseudo-closed-in porch in this cold weather…

We’ve had quite a few positive comments on the color scheme. I’m liking it alot.

It’s looking pretty good, although there is still a good bit of work to be done detail-wise. That’s going to get held up for a few days while Louisville’s “Storm teams” help us get through the impending blizzard and save us from certain death. (Excuse me while I run over to Kroger and get a few gallons of milk and a case of bread …)

In the meantime, they’re going to work on the front porch, which they have weathered in with plastic and propane heaters.

It is looking pretty good. Here are a couple of sneaks at the “work in progress”

Tuesday, they dropped off a boom-lift.

Wednesday, as I was headed off to work, they were pulling up into the driveway. When I came home Wednesday afternoon, here is what I saw:

And this:

And this:

I told the painter that he was a sight for sore eyes. He said that he didn’t know why, since it looks worse than when he got there. I told him that it was just good to know that they have started. They worked pretty quickly on the front of the house. It is almost completely scraped, caulked, and glazed, in just one day’s work. Look for primer in the coming few days!!!

Here are some pictures of the window detail work that the carpenter and I recreated. (I added myself because I made the trimwork, and he installed it.) The windowsill, I built, he cut and installed. The Plinths were my goof up from making the interiors, so even though they’re oak, they’re “paint grade” and will carry continuity nicely from outside to inside.

Here’s a view of the side of the house with both windows completed.

The painters pressure washed the north and west faces of the house last week, and will hopefully (weather permitting) be starting prep work this week, although it is a short week. It’s been a bit rough for them, though, because we’ve had temperatures that are about 20 degrees below normal for the past couple of weeks.

The carpenters replaced the carport ceiling, and I hung the new light fixture today. Now our porch and carport fixtures match. We picked them up a couple of years ago at either Lowe’s or Home Despot. They were close-out models, and I was wishing there were three, because we have another spot for a light fixture on our porch.

Since I am done with the boy work for the carpenters, I can now focus my energies on getting past the 80% mark in the foyer. It’s actually more like 64%, which is 80% of 80%. Damn … I’m only an 80% member of the 80% club…

I’m also working on making updated color maps for the painters, since there are a few details that were not shown in the original ones that we got from Robert Schweitzer. I may upload some of the color maps, I may not. I may make everyone wait until I can get pictures of the completed project. Trust me, it WILL be worth the wait.
