Congratulations to Worapot Pornchaijalurnkit, winner of the 11 Second Club April Competition! There were a lot of great entries this month, but Worapot's entry won over the voters with its beautiful subtleties and great interpretation of the audio clip.

Voting for the April animation competition has begun! This month has 186 entries for you to rate and enjoy, have fun going through them!

You must be registered to vote, and we strongly encourage all voters to use a modern, standards-compliant web browser (Firefox, Safari, etc). This site has known problems with Internet Explorer.

The voting system is set up to encourage people to rate each entry, so if you skip an entry without rating it, you'll see it come up over and over on the voting page until you do. Once you've rated all the entries, you'll have the chance to go back to any of the entries to view or re-rate them.

You don't have to do all your voting at once, the system will remember where you are if you leave and come back.

May Competition

The May Character Animation Competition has begun!

This month's clip is a tricky one, with both characters talking over one another, but it's shorter than normal, which should help. Be sure to think about how each character's strengths and weaknesses come across in their physical performance, because this clip has a lot of possibilities!

In order to spend the majority of your time on the animation, please take advantage of the free character rigs we've linked to in the Resources section, and avoid spending a lot of time on lighting/rendering/etc.

Entries can be character animations in any medium, from CG animation (Maya, 3DS Max, Blender, Animation:Master, etc.) to traditional 2D animation to stop-motion. Consider posting your progress videos in the Work in Progress forum. Feedback and criticism will make your animation stronger!

It's always fun working with status scenes, when one character has a much higher status than another... and there's no better source for status scenes than British period dramas. Enjoy!

The March Character Animation Competition has begun!

Our friend Mike found another great clip for this month! Please keep in mind that, although this an intense and serious clip, disturbingly violent scenes will be disqualified for voting. Also, in addition to the first place AnimationMentor eCritique™ prize, Kenny Roy will be giving away free 3-month training video subscriptions to the second and third place winners of the March Competition!

After each month's competition, I e-mail the winner to see if they would be interested in being interviewed about their work. The response is always positive, and I have been pleasantly surprised by how generous each animator is with their time, and their materials. It tells me that animators want to share and learn from each other, and when they have an opportunity to give back a little of what they've learned, they are happy to oblige. I love it.

This month, however, Peter Nagy has gone far and above the usual generosity of our 11 Second Club winners. In this month's interview, look forward not only to thumbnail sketches and pose studies, but also to video reference, frame breakdowns (from Peter's winning piece, as well as the inspiration for a section of it), and--get this--eleven (eleven!) inspiring clips from movies that Peter has meticulously chosen and talked about why they hold such magic for him. Not only that, but the entire interview is also available on Peter's blog in his native language, Hungarian. (you can read it here) Special thanks to Peter's friend, Andrea Gabanyi, for translating Peter's responses into English.

Give Peter's interview a good read-through: there's some great stuff in here. And brush up your chops, because you never know when it will be your turn to stand here in the spotlight. The bar has been set, folks.
