This is the final listening task before the Japanese Examination at the end of Year 12.

Week 5-Week 8

Week 5: Friday: Kanji Quiz; Read everything you have about Japanese schools; Read the listening preparation sentences and discuss

(Week 6 = activities week): Make sure you have reviewed the vocabulary and the revision sentences first. Then, during this week do Prac SAC (Real SAC 2008) and check answers.

Week 7: Grammar Quiz 1 on page 1 from grammar summary

Vocab Quizzes 1: page 2; 2: page 5; 3 : page 6

Week 8 Relative Clause Quiz; SAC to be held on Thursday

Some tips for throughout these weeks:

1. Learn vocabulary on pages 2, 5 and 6 of the school supplement

(Write them on to pieces of paper, then put them in 3 containers: 1 for known, 2 for unknown, 3 for half-known. Keep referring to these groups, over the next 3 weeks)

2. Practise other listening tasks, even non-school topic tasks, especially the revision type listening at beginning of the MCJLE tasks.

Your cousin that you have never met before visited your family during the Christmas holiday period and stayed at your home. He was a somewhat unusual person. However, you had a great time with him and you began to like him very much. Write a letter to your Japanese pen friend about your cousin and your interesting experiences with him.

Prescribed Kanji...

Prescribed Kanji, according to the current VCE Study Design. You are expected to be able to use the upper section (150 characters),

and to be able to recognise the bottom section. You are not expected to actively use these Kanji, although you will not be penalised for using them either.

Some people have been confused about what they actually need to be using. Here is a link to the Study Design.

I have now published a podcast in relation to this post, it is really meant to extend on your basic knowledge of ageru/kureru/morau. It is the story of the 'three little pigs', although this as told in English does include one 'warui kotoba' in Japanese! Listen out for it in the story as told in podcast 6.

in three parts...

PART 1: Simple verbs, あげます・くれます・もらいます

In Japanese verbs of giving and receiving differ according to who is giving to whom.

あげます
A gives to B

AはBにきょうかしょをあげました。

Note: the giver is the SUBJECT (followed by particle は)

くれます

A gives to the speaker (or me)

あねは(私に)プレゼントをくれました。

Note: the giver is the topic (followed by particle は)

Finally,

もらいます

私は本田さんに本をもらいました。

Note: the receiver is the topic, as this emphasises 'the act of receiving', rather than giving. Therefore, the receiver is the SUBJECT (followed by particle は)

PART 2:
Please DO NOT start on this section, until you think you have really mastered the above section!

There are 2 pairs of verbs and one triplet, which are equivalent, but are used depending on who you are talking about and seniority levels.
These are the following:

So if you are talking about giving something to the Principal, use さしあげる、when you are talking about giving something to a friend, use あげる, and when you are talking about giving something to your little brother/sister or a pet, use やる。

If you are talking about your Principal giving you something, use くださる, if you are talking about a friend giving you something, use くれる。
If you are talking about receiving something from your Principal, use いただきます、and if you are talking about receiving something from your friend, use もらいます。

I have now updated it to include もらう・いただく.
The 'eye' indicates 'I' or 'me'!
The Particles are all important! The arrows indicate who is giving to whom. If the arrows are outward pointing, I am giving to someone else, whilst if they point to the eye, someone is giving me something. If they point up, they indicate seniority. If they point down, they indicate junior status.

You might like to draw your own concept map.

PART 3: ～てあげる・～てくれる・～てもらう
Basically, by using another verb before any of these words, you can express 'doing a favour'. Still the rules of the particles stay the same, as well as the meaning in terms of who is doing what for whom.

SO
すうがくのしつもんを手だってあげます。　　I'll help you with the maths questions.

来てくれてありがとうございます。 Thanks for coming (on my behalf).

あした来てもらいますか。 Are you coming tomorrow (for me)?

Transitive not transvestite, transfats nor transposition, transmigration!

Which one of the following is the transitive and which one is the intransitive??

クリケットのしあいをはじめました。We began the cricket match.（Implies that you were involved）
クリケットのしあいがはじまりました。The cricket match started.　(Implies that I　Am not directly involved.)

ドアがあきます The door opens
わたしはドアをあけます I open the door

らしい　Some of these are taken from here.

(rashii) means "to seem" or "to be like". らしい (rashii) is a verbal adjective and can be conjugated like any other verbal adjective.
らしい (rashii) can also be placed directly after nouns. In these cases it should be translated as "it's typically" or "it's just like".

雨がふるらしい。 (Ame ga furu rashii.)
It appears to be raining.
日本人らしいです。 (Nihonjin rashii desu.)
That's typically Japanese.
かれが来ないらしいです。 (Kare ga konai rashii desu.)
It seems like he's not coming.
田中さんらしくない。 (Tanaka-san rashikunai.)
That's not like Mr. Tanaka (to do something like that).
日本人らしい日本人です。 (Nihonjin rashii nihonjin desu.)
She's Japanese through and through.

「らしい」 can be directly attached to nouns, adjectives, or verbs to show that things appear to be a certain way due to what you've heard. This is different from 「～そうだ」because 「～そうだ」 indicates something you heard about specifically while 「らしい」 means things seem to be a certain way based on what you heard about the subject. 「らしい」 conjugates like a normal i-adjective.

（Ａ）　今日、田中さんは来ませんか。- Is Tanaka-san not coming today?
（Ｂ）　こないらしい。- Seems like it (based on what I heard).
（Ａ）　あの人は何なの？- What is that person over there?
（Ｂ）　みゆきさんの友だちらしいですよ。- Seems to be Miyuki-san's friend (based on what I heard).

There are four uses of ように.
Please note carefully:

1. ように　So that。。。　　This is a lot like ために

赤ちゃんがねるようにお母さんはでんきをけしました。

きれいに書けるようによく漢字をれんしゅうします。

学校におくれないように毎朝早くおきます。

2. ように　（２）Request/Warn/Suggest/Tell

食べないように言われました。

そ父にもっといっしょうけんめい勉強するようにちゅういされたので、アルバイトをやめました。

3. ようにする　　　Make sure (you do something..)

日本に行く時、日本語を話すようにします。

しゅくだいをわすれないようにしてください。

4.　　ようになる　　Get to the stage where.　　OR　With the potential verb:　Learned to/started to...

車をうんてんできるようになりました。

たくさんのイギリス人がオーストラリアに来るようになりました。

毎日漢字をれんしゅうしたら、上手に書けるようになりますよ。
