This is open every Sunday from 10am ‘til 4pm and has a huge collection of second-hand books and magazines about railways and model railways, plus some railway clothing, prints, paintings and model railway items. There are not many of these shops left to browse in! We now offer a mail order service too. Card payments are now taken, as well as cash and cheques.

The station is also open to visitors free every Sunday – just call in. We have displays on the history of the project, and our plans too.

12q4 Phoenix (No62) - Spa Road Station

In a Bermondsey side-street there is a minor industrial estate where some small businesses occupy a line of railway arches. One of the arches has the words ‘Booking Office’ embossed in concrete on either side of the door and two bricked up rectangles beneath which were once the windows at which tickets could be bought. Another arch bears the letters ‘SE&CR’ (South-East and Chatham Railway) above the door.

When approaching London Bridge Station on an incoming train, about 1 mile out to the east, some of the lines on the north side of the viaduct can be seen to separate slightly to accommodate some chunks of old station platform. At this point you are above that mysterious booking office in Bermondsey and you are passing London’s first ever railway terminus – “Spa Road Station”.

Early in the morning of the 8^th February 1836, the first ever passenger train into London arrived at Spa Road from Deptford, and although this is a very significant historical event, the first incarnation of this station was far from grand. Completion of the ostentatious London Bridge Station was only about 10 months away, but the London and Greenwich Railway Company could not wait for that. With other companies hot

on their heels with various railway schemes, they were determined to make history by opening London’s first station. The location was chosen because in 1836 this was on the very edge of the metropolis, with open marshland to the south of the station, and working class housing and riverside industry to the north. While strictly speaking in Kent at that time, this was the first point on the route that could be called “London”. The distance from Deptford was about one mile, while the completed line from Greenwich to London Bridge was about 2.5 miles, all of which was built on a brick viaduct.

The first station at Spa Road consisted was served by single island platform reached by an outside staircase, both constructed (very hastily) out of wood. The platform was very short and remarkably only 3 feet wide. Railway staff often unsuccessfully tried to limit the number of people on the platform to 12, with the rest of the passengers having to queue down the steps with no protection from the weather. Crowds of passengers often stood on the track itself until inevitably, just a few weeks after opening, a passenger called Daniel Holmes was killed and some more injured, including the on-duty policeman. Holmes failed to get onto the platform in time to avoid the incoming train.

The opening of London Bridge station later that year saw the amount of passengers at Spa Road drop considerably, and it became a request stop, and then closed from 1838 to 1842 while a new improved station was built and opened for business. In 1867 the station was rebuilt again about 200 yards to the east of the previous two incarnations. It benefitted from improved access, and a longer and wider platform. It was renamed Spa Road and Bermondsey in 1877.

Spa Road and also Deptford closed in 1915 to help save costs during the war; and although Deptford re-opened some years later, Spa Road never has. A single internal staircase still exists at the later Spa Road to provide works access to the line, and this proved very useful on 8^th January 1999 when a South-Eastern train collided with a Thameslink train nearby and 282 passengers were evacuated to ground level. This part of Bermondsey finally got a station when the Underground’s Jubilee Line opened nearby in 1999.

12q4 Phoenix (No62) - Hawkhurst Signal Box

The last Phoenix outlined the RVR’s signal box appeal. The donation, removal and relocation of the box was agreed by all parties but was subject to the RVR receiving planning permission for the overall redevelopment of its Robertsbridge site as a terminus station. The intention was that once planning permission had been received and the funding was available, the box would be carefully prepared. The roof tiles and steps would be removed, the structure strengthened then craned whole onto a low loader and transported to Robertsbridge.

After a short delay while RDC sought further information, full planning permission was granted by Rother District Council on the 14^th November and notified to us on the 16^th. However when we contacted the present owner of the box to give him the news, we discovered that at some stage before this he had already dismantled the box himself.

The Rother Valley Railway were saddened to hear that the box had been dismantled but we are unable to comment further. The box was subject to planning conditions laid down by Tunbridge Wells Borough Council and we understand that they are looking into the situation.

12q4 Phoenix (No62) - Other News

The Supporters Association committee and the Trust in the shape of Mike Hart, David Felton and chairman Gardner Crawley met on 5 January to look ahead to the coming year and talk through some issues raised in recent weeks. Several other SA regular volunteers were invited along as well. Some key points to emerge were as follows:-

- basic construction site inductions will now be made available to staff who need to access construction site areas for specific reasons;

- the Company will plan for staff to participate more readily in project tasks such as tracklaying, eg by ensuring more notice is given;

- the Trust/Company will improve communication with staff generally;

- staff training arrangements with K&ESR will be pursued.

The Trustees confirmed that plans to restore the rail connection with the Network Rail (NR) system at Robertsbridge were now well advanced. Work by volunteers to recreate the long vanished link into the bay platform would be started later this year, a temporary closure of the mainline’s engineering siding until next January having been commenced in readiness. NR and its contractors were keen to use the RVR tracks for training and trialling purposes. [1]

Plans for starting the various statutory processes are also advancing.

Robertsbridge’s annual Bonfire Night celebrations this year went off with a bang once more. We made some useful money selling refreshments to the shivering hordes in the car park before the parade began.

We spent a warmer autumn day counting bicycles, horses and pedestrians on the A21. This exercise is to collect data for the railway’s expert consultants drawing up the formal case for the three planned level crossings. While motor vehicle data are available from official traffic statistics, when it comes to other forms of traffic there is no alternative to someone sitting there and counting. As it happened, not a single equine, push-bike or walker passed by, but we still have several more counts to undertake and live in. More counts are being planned and we live in hope of seeing someone approach slowly enough for us to explain what we are doing sitting beside the road with clipboards, dawn til dusk.

In December we joined in with the village’s ‘Christmas Capers’, opening up the shop on Friday evening to visitors and offering them (non-alcoholic) mulled wine and roast chestnuts.

The day before the big shunt the volunteers headed off to the Salehurst Arms for our annual Christmas lunch. While we usually ‘self-cater’, we’d taken the precaution of booking ourselves into the pub this year because we had a notion that our mess van could well be out of action…and so it almost proved as we had to disconnect it from the mains on the same day! We are very grateful to the Salehurst Arms for hosting a very fine meal at an amazing price.

Planning permission for our new station and buildings was granted by Rother Valley District Council on 14 November, following the submission of a revised plan for landscaping.

This great news means work can proceed on the scheme. Preparations for this latest phase began in earnest in early December with a drive by the volunteers to round up various historic and useful bits and bobs lying around the station site. This was followed by work to run a power line to the vicinity of the temporary site for the mess van so that we are still able to use it now that it’s left the station area to make way for the reconfiguration of the site. It’s obviously important to keep our volunteer force intact and properly catered for. The van bodies and main workshop were disconnected from the power supply in readiness for the move northwards. The new cable can eventually be re-used to power the lights on the new platform, because a more permanent heavy duty power supply to the new depot area will eventually be installed.

After an absence of several weeks, contractor Andrew Woods’ vehicles returned and he began to clear and level land to the east of the main running line, on the inside of the curve, to form the site for the relocated structures.

The long awaited ‘big shunt’ took place on a sunny but chilly 14 December KESR crew fired up the Permaquip, Titan, Dougal and D2112 and proceeded with an elaborate shunting puzzle to get all the rolling stock northwards to the new trackwork in the desired order. Photos and videos can been seen on the ‘updates’ section of the RVR website, and are also available on RVR’s Facebook page.

Problems with components of the point serving the proposed carriage shed siding were overcome and work to assemble this turnout recommenced at the beginning of December.

By Christmas, all the Robertsbridge RVR station area trackwork had been dismantled right up to beyond the loading pad, plus some of the platform. A way is being cleared through from the main RVR gates to enable cranes and lorries to access to relocate the two Hastings tram bodies, the van bodies, main workshop, and sundry other items that were too large or heavy to do manually. Sadly one of the very useful historic van bodies is set to be scrapped on the ground of lack of space, the second to meet this fate since the new scheme began.

Later a major task will be to re-build the entire formation right up to and including the old loading pad area, to ensure that it is at the correct level, flatter, and less prone to some of the settlement problems that were hard to manage on the old trackwork. Banking to the east will be levelled. All in all, this will be a substantial exercise in civil engineering, even before the revised track layout can be started.

By the end of this year it’s expected that trackwork will be completed, and foundations and services laid for the various new buildings, taking total spend up to about £1.5million.

Editorial

The magazine “Steam Railway” for October, along with the Tenterden Terrier a couple of times now, have indicated that there will be an event next September at which RVR’s steam locomotive Charwelton will be running at Robertsbridge. While no formal announcement has been made as yet, the Trust have confirmed that planning is now under way. As soon as we get further details we will let you know more. The event would see a steam train with passengers at Robertsbridge RVR for the first time in over 50 years, so keep your diaries free!

Clearly, running anything here at Robertsbridge Junction Station will depend on the progress we make during 2013 with the civil engineering and construction work on the site. The latest news on that is described elsewhere in The Phoenix, but please note that the RVR site is now closed to visitors, apart from the shop which remains open every Sunday (see back page). In effect Robertsbridge RVR has become a building site for a while, and is a secure ‘hard-hat area’, apart from the shop. We will of course let you know as soon as we are able to welcome the public again.

If the cover photo looks a little wistful, that’s how many of us felt before Christmas. The rolling stock was trundled out of the station area that we have been slowly developing over the last 20 years or so. The diggers quickly moved in to clear the trackwork in the station area ready for the new layout and platform. We have plenty to look forward to of course in terms of development of the railway project. Nevertheless, the ‘big shunt’ day was tinged with some sadness for many of the regular volunteers.

As promised, this Phoenix includes a questionnaire for our members about the way ahead for the Supporters’ Association. Please take a moment to send us your response on the form provided, once you have read and digested the main article on page 7. Although we are probably some 5 years off joining up, it’s never too soon to look into the future. We don’t hear much from many of you, so now is your chance to make yourselves heard!

Just two weeks in from the stock moves we have the first views of the site.

It may be reminded that the site is now a closed area designated as a building site, but our information area and shop remains open for our visitors.

Already most of the site has been cleared. A great job so far. No further work is expected until the new year now.

Below we have been trying out new technology to get a different perspective and a different angle on the site. This is somewhat new and tricky and very prone to the slightest gust of wind, but please bear with us. It also allows us to go where it has not been possible before with high level shots and tricky terrain.

2012 Progress Mapping 3 - The Central Belt

The biggest portion of the route traverses farmland and parts of which can still be traced from the air. Salehurst halt can be very well seen from the footpath which passes to the east of the halt. And the route up to Salehurst itself oozes a past which is almost forgotten with the iron railings up towards the church. A beautiful walk for the walkers and locals.

From the centre of the A21 to the centre of Junction road = 1.82 miles or 3380 yards or for the metrics 3.09 kilometers.

Looking Back

There have been several track layouts at Robertsbridge over the 160 years since the station was first opened. As the layout is changing yet again (see the summer 2012 Phoenix), it’s interesting to look back.

On the left is the station layout in around 1909, taken from the Ordnance Survey map. This shows the arrangements which lasted pretty much from the 1900 opening of the Col Stephens light railway to Tenterden and beyond (curving away at the top right of the map) until the 1970s.

In place are the SER goods shed, which dates from earlier years of the Hastings line with its small yard crane marked ‘Cr’. Just beyond that are the cattle pens, on a curved loading dock. The now re-vegetated remains of this dock can still be seen dividing the station car park into two distinct areas.

The latter area marks the site of two RVR sidings, right in the centre of the map. The main station has a bay platform with another loading dock (for the end -loading of carriages in the 19^th century) at the southern end. These too remain intact. A bike shelter has recently been erected on this dock in place of two temporary buildings which may have installed for the Hasting line electrification scheme in the mid1980s. North of the old footbridge (‘FB’) can be seen a small siding, beyond the since extended London platform.

Missing from the map above is the large water tower located in between the branch line and the bay platform’s head shunt. The old footbridge was demolished 1980s as part of platform extension works, and replaced by a modern concrete affair, located more conveniently near to the platform entrances. The main station buildings from 1851 (architect William Tress) have survived intact, apart from some of the fine Italianate chimneys, as has the later very attractive signalbox just south of the level crossing, the last traditional box on the Hastings line, not counting Bo Peep. One wonders how long it will be before Network Rail’s plan to replace all current UK signal boxes with a handful of Regional Operating Centres reaches this Victorian example, which survived electrification and resignalling of the line in the mid-1980s, being converted from levers to a control panel.

In the further Ordnance Survey map extract to the left can be seen the large timber yard lying just south of Station Road and the level crossing, and long redeveloped as housing. Judging from the map, the yard had its own narrow gauge line, and accounts of the works suggest it was indeed a very substantial business (Stennings) processing large amounts of home grown timber for uses such as coal mining and shipping. The output was loaded in the siding, the northern tip of which came close to Station Road.

Stennings’ siding had a long headshunt running southwards, beside the main upline and as far as the road marked (mysteriously) ‘shops’ (they looked like cottages when I visited the other day).

2012 Progress Mapping 2 - RVR West

The second in this series takes a look at the developments at the western end of the trackbed.

This area has had the heaviest requirement in terms of engineering with 5 bridges and bridge culvets to deal with. Not visible but a significant engineering achievement was the reinforcing of the river bank.

Remodelling the Station - Shunting the Stock 2

It may be noted that many well wishers were present and in the video. Jocular comments are evident as is normal at any public events.It goes without saying that no comments are made by RVR, officeials or members. Station Area Remodelling - Shunting the Stock

This Sunday (9th December 2012) saw the stock moved out of the station area to prepare for the station dismantling and demolition.

The site was handed to K&ESR and restricted to operating staff during the movements.

It is expected that the stock will remain out of the station area for 6 months(from January) whilst the reconstruction takes place.

2012 Progress Mapping - 1 - RVR East

At the request of several of our readers we have been asked to update the progress maps of the RVR given the rapid and dynamic achievements. The format used will be familiar to many of you who had visited our stands at several of the off-site events we had attended over recent years.

Due to the scale and spread of the works this "Progress Mapping" has been broken down into a series over the next week or so, interleaved with other topics. The entire series will be incorporated into the new website which is under study/planning. The final map will be the last, which ties it all together.

Taking the opportunity it is a chance to share the features and references of the railway which is not always obvious or apparent to those who are less able to visit us.

Robertsbridge (RVR) Station Redevelopment News

Due to the upcoming redevelopment of the station, the site will be CLOSED to the public from Saturday 8th December until further notice. However, our shop and information centre will STAY OPEN as normal throughout the construction work which is expected to take about one year.

We're also expecting to open our mess van during the Christmas Capers this Friday for refreshments in addition to what's happening in the shop and information centre. Click here for more info.

We the volunteers have enjoyed developing the station site over the past 20 years or so to welcome visitors but it is now time to prepare for the future.

We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New (and exciting!) Year.
