24 Services is pleased to announce the opening of our fifth field office in Wilbraham, Massachusetts.

The new office, located at 95 Post Office Park, is fully staffed and equipped, providing Western Massachusetts with all of 24’s services, such as flood mitigation, fire damage restoration, board-ups, temporary fencing, tree removal, emergency demolition, reconstruction, and biohazard removal. As is the case with 24’s other offices, staff can take emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The office is the fifth 24 Services has opened since 2013. This rapid growth can be attributed to 24’s dedication to providing a superior customer experience while minimizing customer inconvenience.

“In a disaster, the sooner we can be on the scene, the better the chances that we can keep damage to a minimum,” said Dan Morse, President and CEO of 24 Restore, a division of 24 Services. “Offering our services to the Wilbraham and Springfield area can help us make a difference in case of catastrophe.”

In addition to Wilbraham, 24 Services has offices in Easton, MA, Waltham, MA, Providence, RI, and Londonderry, NH. All offices can be reached by calling (855) 280-3060.

“Detectives can be in danger long after a crime is committed if there were biohazard pathogens involved,” said 24 Trauma CEO Mike Wiseman. “Our goal is to make them aware of all possible dangers that may not be as obvious, but can be every bit as harmful as an encounter with a criminal.”

The organization offers services to help property owners and managers recover from various types of property disasters. It partners with local first responders and insurance companies to serve the public, and performs various on-site tasks including commercial and home restoration, biohazard cleanup and flood, fire and mold remediation.

Attended by Major Tom Dolan and BCI Detectives Josh Heywood and Mark Bairos, the objective of the seminar was to inform detectives of the possible exposures they may encounter on the job and the correct types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required for protection. The seminar also covered the best way to decontaminate after exposure to hazardous materials as well as the best way to clean their equipment. The demonstration is one in a series of seminars 24 Trauma provides to local police and fire departments across New England.

The training took place at the Pawtucket Country Club at a special crime scene training program called “Death Investigation and Crime Scene Safety,” put on through a collaboration with 24 and the Rhode Island Medical Examiner’s office. Police departments from across Rhode Island were in attendance, including Providence, Woonsocket, Smithfield, Barrington, Central Falls and Warwick.

Everyone knows that April showers bring May flowers, but they can also bring damaging flood conditions. Today’s heavy rain, combined with more precipitation in the forecast, means it’s time to take proactive steps to protect your property. Here are 4 quick tips you can use immediately to help minimize potential flood damage

Clear Gutters of Debris

Make sure all gutters are functioning, and clear of debris.

Downspouts

Make sure all downspouts are directed away from the home. To keep water from pooling, add downspout extensions to direct water flow away from the structure.

Sump Pumps

If you have a sump pump, take a few minutes right now and check to make sure it’s operational. You don’t want to discover it needs to be replaced during a torrential downpour.

Get Important Valuables Off the Floor

Sometimes flooding is unavoidable. However, if your property is susceptible to flood damage, getting valuable items and important documents elevated off the basement floor is always a best practice.

Having any form of mold in your home can cause serious damage to both your home and your physical health. Because mold spores are microscopic and can enter your home in several different ways, it can be difficult to locate the problem area. Here, we will outline the best practices to detect mold in your home and what your next step should be once you have found the issue.

Allergy-like symptoms

If you are experiencing allergy-like symptoms, this may be caused by exposure to mold. Common physical reactions to mold include a running nose, sneezing, congestion, and sore eyes. Though these symptoms are commonplace for those with severe seasonal allergies, experiencing these symptoms while inside your home may be an indicator of hidden mold.

Strange Odor

Even if you are not able to see mold in your home, it will surely give off an odor as it grows. The odor may differ depending on the type of mold but it will likely give off a musty smell caused by the gasses released into the air from the mold.

Physical Qualities

Mold can appear in a variety of ways. It often has a fuzzy, leathery texture and spotty appearance depending on how developed it is. The mold’s color can vary, most often appearing black, green or white.

Checking for Moisture

Many older homes have significant moisture issues that become a breeding ground for mold. Some obvious signs of water damage include discoloration on walls and ceilings, water stains, and surface area moisture. Furthermore, you are likely to have a mold issue if there is a leak in any of your pipes even if there isn’t any visible water damage. If your home had any previous flooding, there could be mold growing in the affected areas.

Where to Look

The first place you should look for possible mold build-up is your basement, as most basements generally have several pipes and little sunlight. Basements are often not built with as much attentiveness as the rest of a home and are vulnerable to water damage, leaks, and other moisture issues. Other places around the house that you should check for mold are behind and under appliances such as your washer and dryer, windows, vent ducts, bathroom tile, between floorboards, and any other closed spaces that are capable of trapping moisture.

What to do if you find mold

Dealing with mold in your home should be done with caution. Because of the possible long-term property damage and health risks, we recommend seeking professional help in any case of mold growth. See our mold removal page to read more about the mold removal services we provide.

The snow is over (at least for now), but the potential danger to your property is just getting started.

Ice dams, caused by the alternate thawing and re-freezing of snow on your roof, can take hold in your gutters and create standing water which can seep into your home. Damage from ice dams can take place days after a snowstorm. By the time you see water running down your walls, the damage has already been done.

The below diagram shows the threat posed by Ice Dams<

Here is what you can do to fight the effects of ice dams:

After the snowfall, use a roof rake to clear at least two feet behind your gutters to prevent ice dams.

Fill old nylons with calcium chloride (NOT sodium chloride!) and lay them across your gutters. They will melt the ice and safely drain water off your roof.
