Range balls will be out for us at 3:30 and we tee off promptly at 4:30 so be ready to go.

I confirmed with Wildwood that we’ll be playing the front 9 as expected for week one. They do have a 18 hole tournament ahead of us but I’ve been assured that they will be finishing up right after we tee off. Because of this two of our foursomes will need to double up with an A and B group on hole #1. Other than that it should be smooth sailing.

I will be at the course early and will personally hand out the scorecards to each team. Take a look at the new format and I can explain the new hybrid tee-box change for anyone that doesn’t understand.

If you are new to the league spend a couple minutes familiarizing yourself with the scoring and everything else on the website [14holegolf.com]. Take note of the league rules on the back of your scorecard.

If anyone needs a sub for Monday please let me know ASAP. We have an extensive sub list but I can’t find a sub if I don’t know about it.

Thanks and see everyone out there!

Our first week is right around the corner on Monday 5/6 so I hope everyone is in mid-season form. I confirmed with Wild Wood that range balls will be out for us by 3:30 pm every week, so show up early and get your warm up in! The league starts promptly at 4:30.

We have a few changes this year.

We lost a few groups bringing us down to 28 total golfers…6 teams in the White flight and 8 in the Green flight. The Green flight will have 2 position weeks and the White flight will have 1. You can see the schedule on our website [14holegolf.com]. But keep in mind as the season winds, the schedule is most likely to change.

No golf on Memorial Day, but we are playing the week of the 4th.

We do have 2 new golfers with us this year so welcome Rick Petralia (playing with Charlie) and Jeff Wilson (playing with Vince).

The league is going with a new tee box configuration this year. Instead of straight blue tees for the 1st 9 holes, we are moving up to the white tees for some of the holes. We will use this blue/white hybrid combo for the 1st 9 holes and then play straight White tees for the remaining 5. Here are the specifics:

A little misty rain to start the round but it was not bad enough to send the Pritchard’s home. Unfortunately, we had several no shows and last-minute subs which caused a few groups to play against nobody.

The big match of the year was the Freitas vs Freitas match up. Tim & Harry were able to retain the crown for another year.

Additionally, it was great to see Don Lemcke back on the links. He has missed most of the season with medical issues but had to get out one last time this year. More importantly, they kicked Scott & Josh’s ass as they won 14-10.

As expected, no changes to the Flight Leaders. Jack Birecree & Tom Ebert won the white flight and Grant & Walker Hines won the green flight. Kalvestran & Hendron gave the Hines Brothers a hell of a fight. If only Kalvestran could have avoided a 8 on #5 the par 3. They missed it by just 2 points. On the flip side Ebert finished the season strong and carried the team as the “B” Player and single handedly took most of the team points.

Next week is the final week of golf. It is our end of the season tournament. We tee off at 1:00 starting on the front nine. This will be a 2 man Ryder Cup format as we have had in years past. Most pairings are going to be mixed up versus players you have not played before.

After golf we will get together in the restaurant for dinner and a brief end of the season meeting.

The one thing I will miss is this tranquil scenery.

The battle continued as the first round of the playoffs proved very little as there were no real changes in the positioning of either flight. This coming week will be very anticlimactic for the white flight as Birecree & Ebert are untouchable going into the last week as they have a 27 point lead over Smith & Dell.

Grant Hines & Walker Hines hold a commanding 18 point lead over Kalvestran & Hendron. This should prove to be an interesting matchup this week.

The conditions, especially the rough, beat up most players this week. The only ones to beat their caps were:

Harry Freitas

John Montgomery

The season ending tournament is scheduled for Monday, October 2nd with a 1:00 shotgun start. Our banquet will be immediately following dinner. If you are unable to attend, please send me an email ASAP so i can start a complete list.

If you have an anything you would like to discuss and vote on at the banquet please send me an email and I will add it to the list. Now is your chance!!

Next week we will plan to start at 4:00 again, and we will have to see what daylight looks like for September 25th. We may have to move it to 3:30. Rainouts were bad this year plus the holidays falling on Mondays.

Absolutely perfect night for golf. Very little breeze, and temperature was perfect.

Just a Reminder, there is no golf this week because of Labor Day.

Wild Wood was still trying to confuse us as they told us the restaurant & bar were going to be closed then they ended up opening up. Sorry for those that left early.

Here is the remaining schedule barring any rain outs:

September 11th will be week #14

September 18th will be week #15 – Playoffs

September 25th will be week #16 – Playoffs

October 2nd will be our season ending tournament and banquet, more details to come.

There is still a battle deciding which 9 people like better. It is split right down the middle. It is actually pretty funny listening to everyone over this.

It appears the battle for the top spots is going to come down to the wire for the White Flight as Birecree & Ebert still remain atop of the leaderboard but they lost a little ground this week to Smith & Dell.

For the Green Flight, the Hines brothers were a little cocky this week both not showing up and they still managed to take 18 points. But past winners Kalvestran & Hendron opponents never showed up so they took all 24 points. It should be an interesting ending.

We have one more week of league play then the last two weeks will be the Playoffs.

The tranquil evening with just enough breeze made the weather conditions absolutely pristine. The course conditions, especially the greens that were covered with shrapnel and divots, were some of the worst greens I have seen at Wild Wood in years.

The greens were the #1 complaint this week, and trust me I think I heard it from almost every person. That is probably why only two players beat their cap this week. Jack Lewandowski shot a 55 for a +2, 2 strokes under his cap and his partner Grant Hines had a 65 beating his cap by 1 stroke. The only saving grace was that Super Sub Greg Koch & Gena Werner were able to hold Lewandowski & Hines to only 10 points.

Additionally the Birdie count continues to drop off as only 4 players had 6 birdies. The bad part is Jack L. had 3 of them.

Lewandowski – 3 Birdies

Dell – 1 Birdie

Smith – 1 Birdie

Steve Pritchard – 1 Birdie

How quickly things chance, last week Vince beat his cap by 5 strokes and this week he was 13 over his cap. How quickly our golf game can fall off. Not that long ago Bret Matthews had a hole in one and now he is not even coming close to hitting his cap. Thankfully, golf is not our full time job.

I am guessing the beverage cart lady quit as she was nowhere to be seen this week.

Beautiful one minute sprinkles to rain the next. Then it became just steamy. For some the conditions were too hard to overcome. For others they found the fairways and took advantage of the soft greens.

15 birdies fell off the Birdie Train from last week as we only recorded 7 birdies this week, down from 22 the week before. The only player to grab 2 birdies was Grant Hines. He figured with the new baby arriving anytime now he better get in his best golf.

As expected with the drop off of birdies, the number of hackers that beat their cap was cut in half. Leading the way was sleeper Vincent Alongi who destroyed his cap by 5 Strokes, all without a single birdie. He did have 7 pars.

Vincent Alongi – 5 Strokes

Tom Ebert – 2 Strokes

Mark Olivet -2 Strokes

Brendan Mulcahy – 2 Strokes

Sub Don Kurdt – 1 Stroke

Glen Cranmer – 1 Stroke

Leaderboard update:
With the Collapse and ass whoopin the Smith & Dell took last week they tumbled out of 1st place.

I am not sure if you can describe the frequency of something that has never happened. With Jack on an Alaskan Vacation the improbable happened. Ebert played some of his best golf I have seen in years. Not only did he beat his cap this week they destroyed Smith & Dell by 24-0. If that wasn’t shocking enough they unprecedentedly went from 3rd place to 1st place in just one week and sit atop of the leaderboard.

For the Green Flight the Hines Brothers less Walker Hines continue to dominate that flight with a 30 point lead.

Golf can best be defined as an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle. This week we had several miracles. In total we had 22 birdies and 11 people beat their cap this week by a total of 21 strokes. 4 players trounced their cap all by 3 strokes.
