Player is one of those words that used to be so simple.  One definition.  Someone who plays.  Then theater, sport and music came along and the word evolved to mean a person who has a role on the stage or sporting field or someone who performs on a musical instrument.  As technology advanced the word came to refer to a sound or image-producing machine.  And yet farther down the road the word somehow devolved to primarily refer to someone with all the character of a common pimp.  Sad really.

If someone called Thespis, Pheidippides or Athenaeus a player you'd know exactly what was meant.  Even just twenty years ago, if someone said Humphrey Bogart, Babe Ruth and Louis Armstrong were players it would still mean much the same thing.  Fast forward (on your image-producing machine) to today and call Leonardo DiCaprio, Derek Jeter (What? You thought we were going to say Tiger?) and John Mayer players and we're talking about something totally different.  Although, thinking about the list of ladies Leo, DJ and John (God, it pains me to put his name on this list, but he has sort of earned it.) have been 'associated' with - player is a moniker most of us could probably live with.

Sligo's Player golf shirt comfortably walks the balance beam of double entendre.  Wear one to the course and your fourball partners competitors will probably start adding shots to their handicap while the beer cart girl will probably just add a few extra shots to your drink.  You might lose a few bets, but you'll probably be the one with the biggest smile on his face at the bar afterward.
