Just started John Sandford's newest, "Buried Prey,'' which takes the reader back to the beginning of Lucas Davenport's career as a street cop in Minneapolis trying to solve the disappearance of two young girls.Prequels are especially interesting for a character as long running as Davenport.

I have frequently referenced "Endurance,'' a book about Ernest Shackleton's great voyage to the Antarctic in 1914-1917. His boat, Endurance, was trapped in pack ice and crushed, but Shackleton saved every member of his crew and got them back home. I am asked which Endurance book I read. It is the one by Alfred Lansing.

Finished "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.'' It is a must read before any visit to Savvanha, Georgia.Currently reading "The Complaints'' by Ian Rankin. Rankin is Scottish, a best seller and highly regarded; police work in Scotland. It's a great way to learn about the country.

This book was a best-seller in the mid-1990s but I wasn't paying attention, that is, I wasn't paying attention until I recently visited Savannah, Georgia.
