The Basilica Block Party took last year off, and the early summer music festival isn’t coming back.

Last year, officials had said that they were looking forward to a bright future in 2026, but that is not to be.

“The final Block Party was held in 2024, concluding an incredible run and leaving a lasting legacy in our community,” a statement on the event’s website reads. “We are deeply grateful for the fans, the artists, and the support shown for our beloved Basilica.”

Started in 1995, the major fundraiser for the Basilica of St. Mary, the historic downtown Minneapolis church, drew a wide mix of local and national acts in its 30-year history. Artists that took the stage included Weezer, Ryan Adams, Brandi Carlile, Goo Goo Dolls, Counting Crows and the Jayhawks.

Thousands attended the two-day event held outside the church, although the 2024 festival was held at Boom Island Park.

This summer, the basilica is undergoing a $45 million restoration.

The block party ran annually until 2020, when it was called off due to the pandemic. It also was scrubbed in 2022 and 2023 before returning for one year.

Minneapolis city planners are considering an indoor playground downtown as they survey residents on whether the idea would bring more families to the area.

The city is in the early stages of the idea and is asking residents about parking, security and spending habits. City planners are also asking about different parts of downtown as they study whether an indoor playground makes sense.

“Where are you supposed to go in the winter… There’s not too many places to take kids to play,” said Minneapolis resident Isabella Reichert, who works as a nanny.

Places like that are already common in suburbs, including Edina and Eagan, but this would be a first in Minneapolis.

After 15 years, the Lowry is closing its doors in Uptown, and April 26 is the last day of service for the Blue Plate Restaurant Co. diner, it announced on social media.

The new survey from Hospitality Minnesota found that only a third of restaurants, hotels and other tourism businesses expect a better spring than last year. In contrast, nearly three-quarters expected a better spring in 2021.

“We’ve not recovered since the pandemic,” said Angie Whitcomb, Hospitality Minnesota’s president and CEO. “We are at a point now where it is dire and we’re starting to see the effects of this.”

After a bill to lower license tab fees failed in the Minnesota House transportation committee, the cost is unlikely to go down anytime soon.

In 2023, the legislature increased the tax rate for license tab fees, while at the same time dramatically slowing the rate of depreciation, so you pay a higher rate on an artificially high valuation on your vehicle.

There’s a bill in the house to lower the license tab tax rate from 1.575% of your vehicle’s value to 1.285%, while also speeding up the depreciation of your car.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled a record $127 billion budget Tuesday — with an ultimatum to Albany to tax the rich or he’ll slap the Big Apple with a massive property tax hike.

The democratic socialist framed his proposal — which would also include pulling from the city’s $10 billion rainy day fund — as a “last resort” to balance the budget if Gov. Kathy Hochul doesn’t agree to increase taxes on millionaires. 

“I do not want to raise property taxes,” Mamdani said of his preliminary budget plan, which would hike property taxes 9.5% to raise an additional $3.7 billion in the next fiscal year.

“When faced with this crisis, the question is who should pay these taxes? I believe that it should be the wealthiest New Yorkers, the most profitable corporations. I believe that they can afford to pay a little bit more,” Mamdani said.

Citing the limited resources available for immigration enforcement and the impossibility of deporting 11 million undocumented people, the Obama administration sought to prioritize the use of the agency’s enforcement personnel, detention space, and removal assets. ICE operations and protests have led to event cancellations and business closures in the Twin Cities, affecting the local economy and daily life.

Snowboarders were expected to fill Minneapolis on Saturday, but the event was canceled. Comedy star John Mulaney also canceled three nights at the Armory due to the presence of ICE agents.

“Commerce and business doesn’t do well when there’s uncertainty,” said Adam Duininck, president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

Duininck said restaurants are hit hardest, with closures not seen since 2020. They are still counting the temporary closures, which are definitely in the dozens.

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials say the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. after federal law enforcement tried to conduct a traffic stop in Minneapolis. The subject of the traffic stop was an undocumented immigrant from Venezuela, DHS said.

A DHS spokesperson said the subject of the traffic stop tried to run away from law enforcement before agents caught up with him, and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, two people came out of a nearby apartment and hit the law enforcement agent with a snow shovel and broom handle, according to DHS officials.

The initial man involved in the traffic stop then got away from federal law enforcement and allegedly began hitting the agent, a DHS spokesperson said.

The agent then fired his weapon and hit the man in the leg. All three people involved ran into a nearby apartment and barricaded themselves inside, DHS officials said.

During a later press conference, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara stated that their department received a 911 call at around 6:51 p.m. about the shooting.

Six federal prosecutors, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Joe Thompson, resigned Tuesday amid mounting pressure to investigate the widow of Renee Good, the New York Times reports.

The Department of Justice pressed for a criminal investigation into the actions of Renee Good’s widow on the day she was shot and killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross, according to the report. Good’s wife was seen on video engaging with Ross before the shooting, but none of her actions in the widely shared video appeared to be illegal.

Harry Jacobs, Thomas Calhoun-Lopez and Melinda Williams were also among those who resigned on Tuesday, according to the Times. Jacobs had been overseeing the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s investigation into fraud and Calhoun-Lopez was the Chief of the Violent and Major Crimes Unit, the Times reported.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison is once again in legal trouble.

Just two weeks after the end of Minnesota’s season, the 23-year-old was arrested Monday morning in Florida and is charged with misdemeanor trespassing.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office says Addison was arrested by Seminole Indian Police at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino at around 3:45 a.m. He was booked at around 7:30 a.m. and was released on $500 bond at about 2:40 p.m. local time.

Ross shot into Good’s car while she was driving away from the site of an ICE operation near Portland Avenue and East 34th Street. U.S. government officials have labeled Good as a “domestic terrorist” who attempted to strike and kill ICE officers.

During Thursday’s White House press briefing, Vice President JD Vance said Ross “might have been a little nervous” because of an incident last summer in which he was dragged by a vehicle and needed upwards of 30 stitches.

Vance’s description of Ross’ injuries matches with an encounter that took place in Bloomington on June 17.

Court documents detail the injuries an ICE agent suffered in the course of attempting to stop Roberto Carlos Muñoz-Guatemala, who prosecutors say was in the country without legal immigration status and had a previous conviction of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct.

An exhibit list describes photos of the injuries as belonging to “Officer Ross.” A jury trial notice lists “Jonathan Ross” as the federal government’s first witness who testified in that trial.

During the stop, Ross ordered Muñoz-Guatemala to get out of the car or he would break the window, a criminal complaint states. When Muñoz-Guatemala didn’t comply, Ross broke the rear driver’s side window and attempted to reach in and unlock the front driver’s side door. Muñoz-Guatemala put the car in drive while Ross’ arm was in the broken window, and he was dragged “approximately 100 yards” down the street.

According to court documents, one cut to Ross’ right arm required 20 stitches; he received 13 more stitches for a gash on his left hand; and he suffered scrapes to his knee, elbows and face. A case brief filed five months after the initial indictment stated he needed 50 or more stitches for treatment.

Last month, a jury convicted Muñoz-Guatemala of one count of assault on a federal officer with a dangerous and deadly weapon. He has yet to be sentenced

One law enforcement official confirmed to ABC News that Ross has 10 years of experience and is a Minneapolis-based member of ICE’s special response team, which is deployed for high-profile and tactical situations.

“He’s an experienced officer that has served a number of years, and we recognize he acted according to his training, and we expect that all of the policies and procedures of review will be exactly that he acted appropriately to protect his life and the life of his colleagues and fellow law enforcement officers that were there,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said of Ross during a news conference held Thursday morning in New York.

Noem and DHS officials say the officer was taken to the hospital because he was hit by Good’s vehicle. However, bystander video of the shooting does not appear to show any serious contact, and the shooter was up and walking the entire time.

The federal Department of Homeland Security said Tuesday that Secretary Kristi Noem was in the Twin Cities, as a federal immigration crackdown continues.

The agency posted a video to social media on Tuesday morning, showing Noem accompanying federal agents as they detained a man.

The agency and Noem, in separate social media posts, labeled the video as being taken in Minneapolis — but it appeared to show the operation taking place at a building on Payne Avenue in St. Paul.

DHS said the man is from Ecuador and is in the U.S. illegally, and that he’s wanted for murder and sexual assault. Noem said that warrant is from Ecuador, and said he was also convicted of robbery and extortion. DHS and Noem did not provide further details on those cases.

It was not immediately clear how long Noem would be in the Twin Cities.

It’s now been more than a month since federal officials announced an immigration operation targeting the Twin Cities. The agency has previously said that it’s made hundreds of arrests.

Gov. Tim Walz, who ended his bid for a third term Monday, sharply criticized the federal enforcement effort, raising concerns about both the scale of the operation and the lack of coordination with state officials. 

“We have a ridiculous surge of apparently 2,000 people not coordinating with us that are for a show of the cameras,” Walz said. “Why 2,000 folks? What are they coming to do? Do they want to coordinate with us?”

MPR News contacted both ICE and the Department of Homeland Security to confirm the number of agents being deployed to Minnesota. DHS responded with a statement from Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, saying, “While for the safety of our officers we do not get into law enforcement footprint, DHS has surged law enforcement and has already made more than 1,000 arrests of murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and gang members.”

Walz said the increased ICE presence is creating fear among immigrant communities, particularly communities of color. 

“What he's [Trump] doing to the Somali community is absolutely unconscionable,” Walz said, adding, "If you want us to fix fraud, come and help us do that. They're not interested in that.” 

Walz said he views the federal action as part of a broader political attack on Minnesota.

Democratic congresswoman charged with stealing $5M in FEMA funds, making illegal campaign contributions: DOJ

Democratic Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, of Florida, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of stealing $5 million in Federal Emergency Management Agency funds, which she is accused of laundering to support her 2021 congressional campaign.

The indictment was announced by the Justice Department on Wednesday.

The indictment alleges Cherfilus-McCormick, 46, and her brother, Edwin Cherfilus, 51, received a $5 million overpayment in FEMA funds directed to their family health care company in connection with a contract for COVID-19 vaccination staffing in 2021.

Tom Brady plans to play alongside current and former NFL stars in a three-team flag football tournament in Saudi Arabia next year, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback and Fox Sports analyst said Monday.

The Fanatics Flag Football Classic on March 21 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh also will include Saquon Barkley, CeeDee Lamb, Christian McCaffrey, Maxx Crosby and Rob Gronkowski, among others.

Las Vegas' Pete Carroll, Denver's Sean Payton and San Francisco's Kyle Shanahan will be the coaches.

Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games in three years. NFL players are expected to make up a large part of the American roster, but USA Football is looking beyond the nation’s most popular league as it searches for potential players.

Former NBA players Chauncey Billups — currently the Portland Trail Blazers' head coach — and Damon Jones were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit both wire fraud and money laundering after allegedly participating in rigged poker games.

Billups and Jones were allegedly dubbed as "face cards" which, the indictment says, were "members of the Cheating Teams and received a portion of the criminal proceeds in exchange for their participation in the scheme." The scheme resulted in the victims losing at least $7.15 million, dating back to April 2019, according to the Department of Justice.

"Billups and Jones, in particular… were utilized to attract victims to the games because of their status as former professional athletes," the DOJ said.

As millions nationwide protested peacefully during the anti-Trump "No Kings" protests on Saturday, several now-viral social media clips have overshadowed the day's events. 

In Chicago, a woman whom social media users identified as a K-8 STEM teacher with the Chicago Public School system at Nathan Hale Elementary School in the city, was captured on video apparently mocking Charlie Kirk's assassination. 

The woman, wearing a gray shirt and holding a Mexican flag, can be seen standing in front of a line of protesters, yelling at a truck as it passed by. As the occupants of the truck displayed a pro-Kirk sign, the woman put her pointer and middle finger to her neck, pretending to pull a trigger and yelling, "Bang, bang."

Just three weeks to Election Day, and voter fraud and efforts to stop it were a big topic of discussion at the State Capitol.

The House Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Policy Committee, asking some pointed questions about the criminal case involving Ronnie Williams and Lorraine Lee Combs.

Federal prosecutors say during the 2021-22 election cycle, the Nevada couple filled out hundreds of fraudulent voter registration applications in 13 Minnesota counties.

“There doesn’t seem to be a check when this group submitted the fraudulent applications,” noted Rep. Kristin Robbins, R-Maple Grove, the committee chair. “So, I don’t know where that breakdown comes in.”

Court documents filed in June say Williams and Combs filled out the forms with fake names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers, and that an unnamed foundation paid for them.

Prosecutors say the foundation paid Williams for each completed application.

State lawmakers passed a law in 2023 banning that kind of pay-for-play operation, where the couple was paid based on how many applications they finished. 

The motive, authorities say, was money. 

“This is not a case about fraudulent votes,” Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon told the panel. “This is also a case of the system working to detect those applications so they could be appropriately challenged and referred to law enforcement for prosecution and conviction.”

He notes local elections officials noticed irregularities in the paperwork and notified authorities.

Simon says his office, the elections personnel and the FBI tracked down the bad actors.

We asked Robbins if the committee had found any new evidence of fraud at this point.

“You know, we have not seen it,” she says. “But we are very concerned that the foundation in question gets their entire budget from federal and state grants. I want to talk to the health department and other departments that are their grantees.”

Robbins says she’d like to see a process where the Secretary of State’s Office would vet registration applications before they are sent out to county elections officials. 

But after the meeting, DFL members say they’re not sure committee hearings are the best way to investigate these kinds of irregularities.  

“I mean, in this committee, we’ve had some people the press has identified. Nothing through this committee process at all,” says Rep. Dave Pinto, DFL-St. Paul. “Of course, we want to make sure our elections are secure as possible and there is access to the ballot as well. That’s the belief that got discussed quite a bit.”

Former state trooper pleads guilty in child porn production case

A former state trooper has pleaded guilty in a child pornography production case.

Jeremy Plonski entered guilty pleas to one count of producing child pornography and one count of distributing child pornography. Additional counts of each offense will be dismissed at sentencing.

Minnesota State Patrol Colonel Christina Bogojevic confirmed that Plonski has been terminated.

Authorities said that Plonski sexually assaulted an infant and wore his state trooper and Army Reservist uniforms while committing the crimes. Plonski then sent videos of the assaults to a user on Kik.

He was also charged in Scott County with one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct of a person under the age of 14. It’s unclear how Plonski’s guilty plea in federal court will impact the state’s case against him.

Ex-Northfield middle school teacher pleads guilty in student sexting case

A former Northfield Middle School teacher accused of sending lewd photos to students on social media has pleaded guilty to a felony charge in court on Tuesday.

Former teacher Katie Hanson, 38, was charged with two counts of engaging in electronic communication relating to or describing sexual conduct with a child. She is accused of sending nude photographs to underage students on Snapchat in 2024.

Hanson filed a petition on Monday to plead guilty to one of the felony charges in exchange for the dismissal of the other. Under the agreement, Hanson is expected to be on probation for the next five years, spend a month on electronic home monitoring, and be ordered to complete 300 hours of community service.

She’s also expected to testify against former school resource officer Gabriel Crombie, who is accused of failing to file reports made by students, should his case proceed to trial. The two worked at Northfield Middle School in 2024 and eventually entered into a relationship together.

Megyn Kelly has claimed that Erika Kirk, widow of the slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, was left “genuinely rattled” by a tongue-in-cheek article by a journalist claiming to have paid a witch to place a curse on her late husband.

The story was published by the feminist publication Jezebel on September 8 – two days before Kirk, 31, was shot dead by a rooftop sniper while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah – without attribution to a particular writer.

Jezebel took the story down once news of Kirk’s murder broke and issued a statement denouncing political violence, but, according to Kelly, not before the Kirks had learned of its contents and been distressed by it.

Ted Cruz compares FCC Chair Carr to Mafia boss in Jimmy Kimmel warnings

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas sharply criticized Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr for his comments related to late-night host Jimmy Kimmel shortly before ABC pulled his show off the air.

Cruz said he took issue with Carr threatening to cancel ABC’s broadcast license over Kimmel’s remarks about the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“He says, ‘We can do this the easy way, or we can do this the hard way,’” the senator said of Carr in the latest episode of his podcast, “Verdict with Ted Cruz,” which aired Friday morning.

“And I gotta say, that’s right out of ‘Goodfellas,’” Cruz said, referring to the classic mob film.

“That’s right out of a mafioso coming into a bar going, ‘Nice bar you have here, it’d be a shame if something happened to it,’” he said.

“Look, I like Brendan Carr. He’s a good guy, he’s the chairman of the FCC. I work closely with him, but what he said there is dangerous as hell,” Cruz said at another point in the episode.

Cruz’s comments put him at odds with President Donald Trump, who applauded Kimmel’s suspension and later called Carr “outstanding.”

Cruz said he’s no fan of Kimmel’s and that he is “thrilled that he was fired” over his comments about Kirk.

“But let me tell you, if the government gets in the business of saying, ‘We don’t like what you the media have said, we’re going to ban you from the airwaves if you don’t say what we like,’ that will end up bad for conservatives,” Cruz said.

Kimmel, who has been suspended but not fired, said in his opening monologue Monday night that “the MAGA gang” is “desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

On Wednesday, Carr slammed Kimmel at length during an appearance on right-wing commentator Benny Johnson’s podcast.

ABC has “a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest,” Carr said.

“But frankly, when you see stuff like this, I mean, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,” he said. “These companies can find ways to change conduct, to take action, frankly, on Kimmel, or you know, there’s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.”

Hours later, ABC and Nexstar Media Group, which hosts ABC-affiliated local stations, pre-empted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely.

Nexstar in August announced a planned $6.2 billion acquisition of Tegna — a merger that will require the FCC’s approval.

Washington Post columnist fired over social media posts after Charlie Kirk's assassination

A left-wing columnist revealed in a Substack on Monday that she was fired by the Washington Post over social media posts amid the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the Colorado school shooting. 

"On Bluesky, in the aftermath of the horrific shootings in Utah and Colorado, I condemned America’s acceptance of political violence and criticized its ritualized responses — the hollow, cliched calls for ‘thoughts and prayers’ and ‘this is not who we are’ that normalize gun violence and absolve [W]hite perpetrators especially, while nothing is done to curb deaths," Karen Attiah wrote.

Kirk, a leading conservative activist, was assassinated at a campus event in Utah on Wednesday. That same day, a separate shooting at a Colorado school left two students injured and the assailant dead.

Attiah included multiple screenshots of her posts on Bluesky, including one that read, "Part of what keeps America so violent is the insistence that people perform care, empty goodness and absolution for [W]hite men who espouse hatred and violence."

"My only direct reference to Kirk was one post— his own words on record," Attiah wrote on Substack. 

In a post to her Bluesky account, Attiah wrote, "'Black women do not have the brain processing power to be taken seriously. You have to go steal a [W]hite person’s slot'- Charlie Kirk." 

Attiah appeared to reference a July 2023 remark made by Kirk during "The Charlie Kirk Show" about affirmative action in which he named Joy Reid, Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, Michelle Obama and Sheila Jackson Lee, according to Reuters, rather than speaking broadly about all Black women, as one viral X post suggested.

Attiah said she was fired for speaking out against political violence, "racial double standards" and America's "empathy towards guns."

"The Post accused my measured Bluesky posts of being ‘unacceptable’, ‘gross misconduct’ and of endangering the physical safety of colleagues — charges without evidence, which I reject completely as false. They rushed to fire me without even a conversation. This was not only a hasty overreach, but a violation of the very standards of journalistic fairness and rigor the Post claims to uphold," Attiah wrote in the post, where she included a 2019 photo of herself and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos.

Law enforcement officials also said the weapon used has been recovered and described it as a "high-powered, bolt-action rifle." 
• Vice President JD Vance and second lady Usha Vance will fly with Kirk's body on Air Force Two to his hometown in Phoenix, Arizona, according to officials.
• President Trump paid tribute to Kirk, and elected officials on both sides of the aisle swiftly condemned the attack and denounced acts of political violence.

Federal criminal charges were filed in Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon by the United States Department of Justice against the man accused of fatally stabbing a 23-year-old Ukrainian woman on a Charlotte light rail over two weeks ago.

The Department of Justice said on Tuesday, Aug. 9, that they have filed federal criminal charges against 34-year-old DeCarlos Brown Jr. He was charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system.

“Iryna Zarutska was a young woman living the American dream — her horrific murder is a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies that put criminals before innocent people,” said Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “I have directed my attorneys to federally prosecute DeCarlos Brown Jr., a repeat violent offender with a history of violent crime, for murder. We will seek the maximum penalty for this unforgivable act of violence — he will never again see the light of day as a free man.”

The FBI is investigating the case with the assistance of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is working to fill job openings with less than two weeks to go before the new school year starts.

“I’m confident we will have those teaching positions filled,” said Superintendent Dr. Stacie Stanley.

She explained SPPS Human Resources has been doing new intensive hiring fairs in the community to meet that goal.

The district had more than 135 teacher vacancies as of last week, according to a progress report to the Board of Education on Tuesday.

Cracker Barrel shares plummet after pushback on new logo, brand refresh

Shares of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store

plummeted roughly 10% on Thursday after the restaurant unveiled its new logo earlier this week as part of a larger brand refresh.

The new logo removes the image of a man leaning against a barrel that was prominently featured in the original, leaving behind just the words “Cracker Barrel” against a yellow background. The phrase “old country store” has also been removed.

The company said the colors in the logo were inspired by the chain’s scrambled eggs and biscuits.

The change is part of a “strategic transformation” to revitalize the brand that started back in May 2024. Under that mission, Cracker Barrel’s brand refresh includes updates to visual elements, restaurant spaces and food and retail offerings.

Carr founded Scream Club Twin Cities MN in early August. The group travels to different lakes, rivers and streams every week to scream across the water. And they’re always looking for new participants.

Certain states will no longer allow you to buy junk food with SNAP.

In a win for Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) advocates, six more states have gotten waivers allowing them to ban soda, candy and other high-sugar junk foods from being purchased through the federally funded, but state-operated Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP. 

The waivers, which amend the statutory definition of eligible food for purchase under SNAP, were granted to West Virginia, Florida, Colorado, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas. The new restrictions on what can and cannot be purchased will go into effect in 2026.

The six new waivers bring the number of states that have sought to restrict SNAP purchases of junk food to 12. The other states who received waivers from the Trump administration earlier this year were Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Idaho and Utah.

Alpha-gal syndrome is a type of food allergy. It makes people allergic to red meat and other products made from mammals.

In the United States, the condition usually begins with the bite of the Lone Star tick. The bite transfers a sugar molecule called alpha-gal into the body. In some people, this triggers a reaction from the body's defenses, also called the immune system. It causes mild to severe allergic reactions to red meat, such as beef, pork or lamb. It also can cause reactions to other foods that come from mammals, such as dairy products or gelatins.

The Lone Star tick is found mainly in the southeastern United States. Most cases of alpha-gal syndrome are reported in the south, east and central United States. But the condition appears to be spreading farther north and west. Deer are carrying the Lone Star tick to new parts of the country. Other types of ticks carry alpha-gal molecules in different parts of the world. Alpha-gal syndrome has been diagnosed in parts of Europe, Australia, Asia, South Africa, and South and Central America.

Some people may have alpha-gal syndrome and not know it. There are people who often have serious allergic reactions, also called anaphylactic reactions, for no clear reason. Tests also show that they don't have other food allergies. Researchers think that some of these people may be affected by alpha-gal syndrome.

There's no treatment other than avoiding red meat and other products made from mammals. If you have a serious allergic reaction, you may need medicine called epinephrine and treatment at the emergency room.

Avoid tick bites to prevent alpha-gal syndrome. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts when you're in wooded, grassy areas. Use bug spray too. Check your whole body for ticks after you spend time outside.

Round-the-world walker prepares for home stretch

A man hoping to become the first person to complete an unbroken round-the-world walk is preparing for the last leg of his journey.

Karl Bushby set off from Chile in 1998. Since then he has walked across American and Asian continents, swam 186 miles (300km) across the Caspian Sea and fought off ice lumps and polar bears through the Bering Strait, all without using any form of transport.

The former paratrooper has less than 2,000 miles (3219km) left to walk before he arrives at his home city of Hull.

Mr Bushby, who is currently in Mexico waiting for a visa to complete his challenge, has said returning home will be a "very strange place to be" after being away for some 27 years.

Following his 31-day swim across the Caspian Sea last year, Mr Bushby said he continued his journey to Azerbaijan and then through to Turkey.

The traveller, originally from Sutton Park, said he "had to step aside" from his mission, named the Goliath Expedition, while he waited for a visa.

Feds execute search warrants connected to ‘massive scheme to defraud’ a Minnesota housing program

Alpha News was on location as a search warrant was being served at several locations related to a “massive scheme to defraud” Medicaid and Minnesota’s Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program.

According to the search warrant, the fraud investigation involves HSS providers who billed for various services intended to provide stable housing for Minnesotans.

The search warrant states, “The Program has proved to be extremely vulnerable to fraud.”

The vulnerability stems from limited requirements for service providers and the vast services they can provide for Medicaid reimbursement.

“Since Minnesota became the first state to offer Medicaid coverage for Housing Stabilization Services, dozens of new companies have been created and enrolled in the program. These companies, and the individuals who run them, have taken advantage of the housing crisis and the drug addiction crisis in Minnesota to prey on individuals who need help getting back on their feet as they recover from drug addiction,” the warrant says.

“These companies and individuals do so by contacting Medicaid-eligible people in halfway houses and residential drug treatment facilities and offering to help them find stable housing. After registering these people to receive housing stabilization services, the companies fraudulently claim to provide dozens of Program service hours to their new ‘clients.’ In reality, client after client has reported that they received little or no actual services or assistance from these companies. But the companies engaged in this scheme have received millions of dollars in Medicaid funds for housing stabilization services they did not actually provide,” it continues.

Minneapolis leaders explore city-owned grocery store

Last November, the Minneapolis City Council’s Public Health and Safety committee asked city staff to explore the idea of government-owned grocery stores as a tool to combat the city’s problem of food insecurity and food deserts.

Now, on Wednesday, city leaders are prepared to review a research presentation on the subject.

Ward 2 council member Robin Wonsley is open to the idea of municipal grocery stores in the city. Wonsley says it’s clear the private market is not meeting the city’s needs.

"We want to see what options are ahead of us, and how we can leverage every tool we have at the city to make sure our residents have access to fresh produce," Wonsley said. "The research that we received is very exploratory and provides examples of where other cities have stepped up to provide food resources for their residents where there was an absence of a grocery store; so we’ll learn what other peer cities have done."

Two charged in nearly 900 pound meth bust in Minneapolis, part of Mexican drug operation

The Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office followed up with a social media post confirming that its Violent Crime Enforcement Team (VCET) along with federal partners had been involved in the massive takedown, which it said was “possibly one of the largest meth busts in Minnesota history.”

Arrested were Joel Casas-Santiago, 46, of Minneapolis, and Guillermo Mercado Chaparro, 44, of Chicago. Each has been charged with one count of first-degree drug sales, and Mercado Chaparro is charged with an additional count.

The charging document states that a controlled drug buy took place in south Minneapolis over the weekend, with an undercover officer purchasing one pound of meth from an individual identified as Mercado Chaparro.

Nevada Resident Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Engage in Voter Registration Fraud in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS – Ronnie Williams pled guilty today to an information charging him with conspiracy to engage in voter registration fraud, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson.

Thompson. “Free and fair elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. Any attempt to undermine that process through fraud will be investigated and prosecuted. According to court documents, beginning in 2021 through 2022, Ronnie Williams, 58, was involved in a conspiracy to create fictitious identities and information for use in Minnesota voter registration applications. After filling out the forms, Williams signed a statement affirming that he had read and understood the certification, which included a warning that submitting false information constitutes a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Impostor uses AI to impersonate Rubio and contact foreign and US officials

The State Department is warning U.S. diplomats of attempts to impersonate Secretary of State Marco Rubio and possibly other officials using technology driven by artificial intelligence, according to two senior officials and a cable sent last week to all embassies and consulates.

The warning came after the department discovered that an impostor posing as Rubio had attempted to reach out to at least three foreign ministers, a U.S. senator and a governor, according to the July 3 cable, which was first reported by The Washington Post.

The recipients of the scam messages, which were sent by text, Signal and voice mail, were not identified in the cable, a copy of which was shared with The Associated Press.

South Florida law enforcement is investigating after a 5-year-old girl fell overboard from a Disney Dream cruise ship Sunday, prompting her father to jump into the ocean after her.

The Broward Sheriff's Office told CBS News Miami on Tuesday that the "little girl was not being held, as erroneously reported on some social media sites," referring to online speculation that her father may have been holding her on the ship's railing moments before the incident.

The incident happened aboard the Disney Dream as it sailed between the Bahamas and Fort Lauderdale. After she fell overboard, witnesses told CBS News Miami her father jumped in after her and treaded water for more than 10 minutes.

The United States Department of Justice is suing Minnesota over state laws which offer some undocumented immigrants access to lower in-state college tuition. The government is also challenging a new state program which offers some students free tuition.

Members of the federal government are arguing these state laws “unconstitutionally discriminate” against other U.S. citizens and from other states who aren’t given the same benefits.

Most recently, state lawmakers passed the North Star Promise Program, which launched just last fall and provides state funding to cover any unpaid tuition and college fees for students from families making less than $80,000 a year. The amount of money a student receives is based on whatever costs aren’t already covered by other grants and scholarships.

Trump says Elon Musk will face 'very serious consequences' if he funds Democratic candidates

President Donald Trump on Saturday said there would be “serious consequences” if tech mogul Elon Musk funds Democratic candidates to run against Republicans who vote in favor of the GOP’s sweeping budget bill.

“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump told NBC News in a phone interview, but declined to share what those consequences would be.

“He’ll have to pay very serious consequences if he does that,” he added.

The president also said he has no desire to repair his relationship with Musk after a feud between the two men erupted into public view earlier this week.

“No,” Trump said when asked if he had any wish to do so.

Asked if he thought his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO was over, Trump said, “I would assume so, yeah.”

Trump’s comments were the most extensive since he and Musk exchanged threats and attacks on X and Truth Social earlier this week. He added that he thought the Republican Party was more unified than ever after the two men fell out in front of the world.

Trump said he has no plans to speak with Musk anytime soon. “I’m too busy doing other things,” he said, adding, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”

Trump also accused Musk of being “disrespectful to the office of the President.”

“I think it’s a very bad thing, because he’s very disrespectful. You could not disrespect the office of the President,” he added.

Musk on Thursday launched a barrage of posts on X against the president, including a now-deleted post highlighting the onetime links between the president and the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“That’s called ‘old news,’ that’s been old news, that has been talked about for years,” Trump said on Saturday. “Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it. It’s old news.”

In the days leading up to their public falling out, Musk had been critical of a GOP-led spending bill that the House passed last month.

In the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump responded to Musk’s criticisms, telling reporters, “I’m very disappointed because Elon knew the inner workings of this bill. I’m very disappointed in Elon. I’ve helped Elon a lot.”

Wayzata graduation shooting suspect faces stiffer sentence after prosecutor filing

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office will seek an enhanced sentence against the man suspected of shooting two people following the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

Hamza Abdirashid Said, 20, of Coon Rapids, is charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and possessing/operating a machine gun in connection to the May 30 shooting.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office filed a "notice of intent to seek an upward sentencing departure" in the shooting that injured two people outside the Wayzata High School graduation ceremony at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

This means prosecutors will seek a legal penalty that goes beyond the state's typical sentencing guidelines. 

The filing states that the victims in the shooting "were particularly vulnerable based on the location of the incident on a university campus," adding that "the Victims were particularly vulnerable based on the large scale of attendees at the public event, besides the intended Victim there were numerous people present besides the intended victims and Defendant created greater-than-normal danger to the safety of these other people."

The document states that the "sentencing departure issues should be decided by the trial jury." The maximum sentence for first-degree assault in Minnesota is 20 years.

Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, clinched the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday, correctly spelling “éclaircissement” to claim the title and over $50,000 in cash and prizes in a dramatic final round.

Zaki, last year’s runner-up, triumphed over eight finalists in the centennial Scripps National Spelling Bee, hosted at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center near Washington, D.C. The contest began with 243 spellers aged 11 to 14, narrowed to Zaki, Sarv Dharavane, 11, and Sarvadnya Kadam, 14. All three misspelled words in one round, forcing a tense additional round.

• While some believe grief tech could help people find closure, there are also concerns that it could have a negative impact on their mental health.
• “There is evidence from multiple studies that proximity seeking [behaviours aimed at restoring a closeness with the person who died] is actually linked with poorer mental health outcomes,” explains Dr Kirsten Smith, clinical research fellow at the University of Oxford.
• “Who gets to decide what ‘helping people grieve’ means?” asks psychotherapist and grief consultant Megan Devine.
• “People have always engaged in various kinds of rituals where things are done with the belongings of the deceased, where certain kinds of possessions are preserved,” remarks Dr Elaine Kasket, bereavement lead at the Digital Legacy Association. “This could be seen as a technological version of these analogue, physical rituals.”

One thing is certain: as AI continues to evolve, so too will our approach to death and remembrance. The challenge lies in harnessing this technology thoughtfully, ensuring that we do not commit further harm in our efforts to help. By extension, we cannot lose sight of our humanity in our pursuit of digital immortality.
