I'm just preparing you for the storm of awful day-of-the-week related jokes headed your way when you show up in this costume. If you really embody her character however, you will take absolutely none of that nonsense from anyone. Today's costume idea is Wednesday Addams, of course.

Wednesday is a classic. She's recognizable, relatable (in a we-all-have-that-thing-that-makes-us-creepy kind of way, no?) and easy to re-create.

hahahahahha, CLASSIC WEDNESDAY.

COSTUME CONFUSION

It might not seem like a very creative costume but this is the holiday when you can take almost any well-known character and twist it around (think: any Disney princess as a zombie. ta-daa!). If you're all-in you can really make this costume unique.

Some DIY accessories that can make this look all your own: barbie head/hand/feet jewellery, a creepy book (tape a chilling title onto a plain cover book or notebook), destroyed dolls. You could also opt for a Wednesday look from various scenarios: Wednesday in gym class (think all dark gym-skort uniform), Wednesday's Halloween dinner look (hair ribbons, frilly collar maybe decorated with blood) or Wednesday in one of her camp outfits from Family Values.

What's important to keeping the look true to Wednesday are all dark clothes, middle-par hair in two long braids and a cold stare.

MAKE UP

You can add another layer to your costume with dark eyelids and white liner to get the dead-doe eyes, while a layer of powder on your cheeks and lips will complete the recently deceased look Wednesday is known to rock.

Real people hair - scalp preferably still attached.

CHARACTER IS KEY

The key to nailing this iconic look is just that: the look. It depicts another level of annoyed and all at once "I really don't care". Some of us have it, some of us don't. This kind of "layer" to the costume is for those looking to really impress. So if you're headed to the kind of party for which you're simply interested in a costume you won't have to explain all night - don't worry about this step.

PARTNER UP

If you've got a dude hanging around, coax him into being the Pugsley to your Wednesday. On recreating scenes from the movie, note: don't try this at home. Playful pushing and shoving is fine - just no burying each other alive, please.

feeling clueless?

So die-hard Halloween fanatics are going to give me grief for this one - and I know it isn't Regan MacNeil or Corpse Bride or anything remotely scary - but if you're looking for a costume you can easily throw together from items that probably exist in your wardrobe, then stick around.

One could also argue that Cher and her crew of poor-little-rich-kids are scary in their own way. You can have lots of fun with this costume if you get into character. Brush-up by watching the movie or scrolling through some of the film's brilliant insight on teenage angst (35 great examples here).

This look is best accessorized with tasteful patent, knee high socks and an over-sized 90s cell phone (you can always find them in the gadgets section of thrift stores). The ULTIMATE accessory however, is your very own clique. Of course boys can participate too - think over-sized tees and classic bucket hats to fit in with the team.

So okay, I don’t want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don’t get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair (eww!) and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we’re expected to swoon? I don’t think so.

ho-hum it's halloween

So Halloween should be most every fashion-blogger-DIY-enthusiast's favourite holiday, right? It's not that I don't love the scary movies, chilly nights, cheesy decoration and air of competitive creativity that October is filled with but I've just never been any good at getting into the spirit of things.

October is the time of year where my energy, motivation and creativity rapidly decline as I slip into a state of dysphoria over how quickly September (my month of 'new beginnings') seemed to have flown by.

Instead of contently sipping pumpkin spice lattes and embracing sweater weather I find myself dragging my feet home from work, turning on Hart of Dixie and falling asleep in my day clothes (go ahead, judge me).

So costume planning is never really a thing in my world. The few times I've put effort into Halloween, in my trick-or-treating years, I was discouraged by the dreaded "cute! so... what are you supposed to be actually?". Nowadays, if I even have anywhere to go, I throw on a one coloured outfit and animal ears and call it a day (i.e. leopard dress = leopard, head-to-toe brown + ears = teddy bear).

Regardless of my own lack of participation in the holidays, one of my biggest all-around pet peeves is pre-made costumes, unless they are worn as a joke. I admire those who can put together a recognizable character from thrifted pieces, items from their own wardrobe and maybe with the help of some dollar store supplies.

A couple days after I publicly vowed to no longer wear colour - I ran out of options. Of course after years of collection eclectic patterns and floral dresses this was bound to happen, but I happily excepted this as an excuse to head thrift shopping.

I never go thrift shopping with any expectations of my expectations. I do usually have some purpose in mind (e.g. denim dress, cardigan, oxfords) but I don't get my hopes up. This time of course my list was quite easy to fulfil - anything black - but I did not think I'd find so many great pieces.

All in black - I picked up a pair of high-waist denim pants, a sequin crop jacket (pictures to come) and my favourite find: vintage leather trousers. Not only are they mint condition but I also scored these babies for 8 bucks (thrift stores have been hiking their prices quite a bit lately).

I found great variety and unique pieces in a colour that everyone kind of turns to for safety. Here's how I styled my new leather pants.

NorBlack NorWhite: Fashion, Art, History

The first time I wrote a piece about NorBlack NorWhite I was 16, my mom was the only
person reading my blog and the brand had only just released their first collection. I caught a
Fashion Television feature on the Toronto design duo after school back in 2010 and was
immediately obsessed with their concept. Since then the brand has released seven collections
and is available in major cities around the world.

Amrit Kumar and Mriga Kapadiya founded NorBlack NorWhite after graduating from
university in Toronto and moving to Bombay. Their idea was to find inspiration for each season
in a different part of India. Kumar and Kapadiya spend the time between collection launches on
road trips through different regions of the country learning about textiles, patterns and clothing
traditional to the area. The duo then take what they learn on the road back to the studio and
incorporate it in their collections. The aim is to mix the traditional wear, unique to whatever
region they chose as inspiration, with modern design aesthetics.

NorBlack NorWhite collections never disappoint with beautiful yet wearable pieces and
still offer so much more than that - the clothes are a testament to the journey, to history and
traditions being rediscovered and reinvented for the modern wearer. Each season is
accompanied by a vlog documenting their journey and the process of creating the final product.

What draws me personally to the brand is it’s ability to mix the things I’ve always been most
fond of: fashion, history and travel. Like many fellow Torontonians, I was born and raised in
Toronto but learned English only as my second language; I know that strange feeling of having
your heart in two places at once. I love that NorBlack NorWhite have found a way to remedy this
by incorporating it in their art. They design clothes that are inspired by history and set out to
make history.

Today I introduce a new series called “defining moments”. Over the next few weeks I will dedicate posts to various media and it’s effect on my life and style over the years. I'd love to see response posts (link me!) so feel free to use this idea as your own.

Age 10: Bandana Bandit

I was hesitant to see Pirates of the Caribbean because I didn’t like scary things and “Curse of the Black Pearl” sounded exactly like the thing that 10 year old me thought would give me nightmares... instead it gave me dreams.

When I was forced (read: peer pressured) to watch POTC in after-school care it changed my life. That very evening decided I would become an actor or a pirate. My first ever not-mom-or-dad idol was Johnny Depp. I trained for years in acting to pursue this dream. It also inspired a brief (and not well documented, to my relief) bandana-phase.

Age 14: Grease is the Word

I so badly wanted to be Frenchy but I was cast as Sandy in my summer camp production of Grease when I was just 12. We didn’t do a full version if you’re wondering - just a couple “G”-rated songs and scenes. I finally convinced our councillors to give me the part of Frenchy instead and to this day I don’t regret giving up the lead. I loved Frenchy because she was an absolute mess but seemed to be the only student in that entire school thinking about her future. She was always busy trying to find her place in the world and even though she kept changing her mind or "bombing" her attempts, they all became a part of her active search for her place in the world.

Of course the film also gave me an instant desire to don poodle skirts and frilly socks; I wanted to dance around bleachers and twist petty schoolyard drama into catchy tunes. I couldn’t decide who’s style I wanted to emulate more - Danny’s or Sandy’s. Here I am mixing a preppy 50s feel with my tough-as-nails-Danny-Zuko leather jacket look. All that’s missing really is the hair grease.

Age 16: Fur Coat of Secrets

I was a bit lonely at 16. My social skills were not lacking, in fact I was a bit too social according to my teachers, but I still preferred the time spent in my own imagination than the time I spent around my peers. I wasn’t much of rebel or a great thinker like Margot Tenenbaum, but I was good at keeping secrets. I talked and talked and talked like I had nothing to hide but my big (faux) fur coat was filled with secrets.

This was also the year I cut my hair short to

enhance my natural likeness to Alexa Chung (I’ve never been more wrong in my life)

Looking back, I wish I’d had a little more sense to go for a Margot-like cut.

Age 19: Dazed and Confused

Wearing overalls. Everyone's out past bedtime. Being grounded. Hanging out with older kids. Shooting pool. Senior pranks. Stuck in high school. Tie-dye tees. Dazed. And. Confused.

Who am I kidding. Most nights I’m in bed (on my computer) by 9pm, snacking on my hidden stack of chocolate bars - but when I do leave the house, I totally wear overalls. That and I also don’t have my life figured out yet.

I'm head-over-heels for this summer's kimono trend and regardless of its cool fading out as we exit festival season, I plan to keep wearing them. I own two pieces so far, this silk dragon embroidered Value Village find being my favourite. My white floral sheer fringe kimono is a little less practical for fall and well, for basically much everything else thanks to the fringe (but it's pretty so I make it work).

I was having a bit of a lazy day and decided to wear my little red dress from the night before (masking the post concert sweat with loads of perfume - classy). So I thought it was the perfect occasion to test drive my kimono which to that point had served more as decoration hanging above my bed.

The vibrant embroidery matched perfectly with the shiny dress and toned down the look too. I don't feel 'myself' without a couple layers piled on anyway. I was so comfy all day that I couldn't be bothered with a few confused stares. It's PJ-chic... that's still a thing, right? Next stop: pajama suit.

I've been gone for a bit, again (ugh), I know. In the past year I've had ups and downs that seem like itty-bitty roller coasters compared to those I experienced in high school. What might be saving me now is how little time I suddenly have to dwell on my problems. My job, preparing my university portfolios and (slightly obsessively) hitting the exercise grind have left me with little time for the things I used to love - like lying around and moping or burying my feelings in hours of television.

However busy I am, autumn is unavoidably a time of reflection for me. I used to wear all black everything. My grade 10 back-to-school closet was filled with black t shirts, denim, blazers, skirts and socks. I wasn’t rocking all black in a sort of rebellious teenage way, think 30 year old Parisienne business woman instead.

It got to a point where for some reason people where bothered by it. I often got comments on how it made me look and something misguided about how I should enjoy colours and patterns while I was young enough to pull them off. I didn’t really change because their opinions bothered me but because I saw it as a challenge. Buying the colourful or printed version of everything rather than go straight for black and find the quirkiest patterns and pile them on more patterns became the new way of life - my style evolved quickly and all monochrome shades disappeared from my wardrobe.

Fast forward two years and into an ongoing end-of-teen life crisis, I was feeling like I’d lost something in the search for “me” that I had actually really liked. So it hit me a few weeks ago that this was one thing I really missed and that I was in dire need of – looking more mature, being taken more seriously - which black clothes really can help you achieve if worn correctly.

Of course, you may argue that all black can get boring but I am not swearing off all colours and patterns entirely. I am however going to try and choose black more often and try to find creative ways to wear it: unique cuts and fabrics, layering and textures can turn the misunderstood "boring" shade into a statement.

★~(◡‿⊙✿) SUM INSPIRATION 4 U!!! ★~(◡‿⊙✿)

Embrace your dark side/any feature you miss about one of your previous personas - the point is to take something old and turn it new again. Step back into your comfort zone and find ways to test your creativity from within there. Maybe a bit of thinking inside the box - but customizing the shit out of that box until there isn't an empty space left in it.

We all know inner beauty is what counts the most so with the beginning of the new school and work year, I invite you to take that step back and examine that the past, present and future of your comfort zone. Reflect on the things you've loved and lost - from minor things like items or trends to the big deals like characteristics, people, environments. Think about what losses you gained from and what you're still trying to undo. It could be as simple as reintroducing a colour to your wardrobe or as major as calling a long lost friend.

style on a budget?

Last fall an article in In Style magazine titled “Shop Like a Fashion Editor” caught my eye. Three editors at In Style recorded how they had shopped for the season on their varying budgets ($400, $2000 & $4000) which they spent over a four month period. This sort of project is great to keep track of what sort of pieces one is picking up and to control spending!

I’d like to fill my summer wardrobe with quirky pieces reminiscent of Moonrise Kingdom mixed with androgynous-cool staples like suit pants, mom jeans and brogues. Suzy Bishop, Alexa Chung and Solange are my style gurus. I’m going for Suzy’s cute dresses and weird charm – unexpected accessories like bug earrings or mod purses. On the other hand Alexa and Solange’s daring prints and boyish cuts are must-haves to mix and match. Bright orange, red and mustard yellow are colours I’m really digging in these trends –looking for eye-catching patterns or colour blocking these with black, white and nude pieces.

First things I can cross off my list are shoes! This month I got a pair of TUK creepers (birthday gift) and white leather cut-out boots from Topshop ($70)! I also purchased a leatherette mini skirt from H&M ($30) on a whim and a loose black tee to match ($13) – both of these are staple pieces I can wear with pretty much everything in my wardrobe. I especially love the loose black tee for its boyfriend fit and versatility. Finally I picked up an elephant print blouse from Forever 21 ($24), quirky shape and awesome prints – check and check!

So this month I spent $140 (rounded) of $400 – I head into April with $260 to get creative with.

FINALLY a colour any girl can rock. Last summers light pastels left us all a bit washed out, while the rend does live on, this winter we are encouraged to go big and bold in edgy dark colours - navys, black, emerald - and my personal favourite: BURGUNDY.

The A/W 2012 runways embrace the trend - designers incorporated the colour using leather, lace & sheer materials. The shades ranged from too-red-to-be-burnt-orange to a redish plum; sometimes layering these different tones over each other.

Mix the colour into a plain outfit up with a comfy circle scarf, classy felt hat or floppy and fun beanie or be bold with key pieces in the shade.

JOIN IN ON THE FUN!

Personally, I've been buying dresses, skirts & knits in the shade - although I'm still searching for that perfect burgundy tote. Here are some of my picks from TOPSHOP's fall line up, burgundy in unique fabrics seems to be the most popular - I'm in love the velvet undies and denim overall-dress but picking a cozy knit to throw on a 'blah' outfit is a good investment piece.

I love the moon. I know it's a weird "confession" but my nocturnal habits have often inspired my art, and lately my style: I find myself searching high and low for moon art, jewelry, t-shirts - anything I can get my hands on.

When I came across these over sized silver earrings, I had to have them! They were kind of like a cross between silver kitsch gypset style and street sweet bamboo hoops - the perfect addition to my lately 'blah' wardrobe.

The word "GYPSET" is the combination of gypsy + jet set. I recently bought a small coffee table book by Julia Chaplin, filled with beautiful photos of what inspires gypset style. I recommend looking for it at book stores. Here are some scans to inspire your finds!

Yesterday was like spring in Toronto - it was quite surprising after we were hit by some of Sandy's left overs too. To celebrate the 16 degrees, I broke out the shorts - layering nylons underneath of course. I am actually a bit of a hypocrite for sporting this look, I've said in the past that I had gotten quite bored of seeing girls wearing their highwaisted shorts waaaay over season layering with tights; however I do admit it's an easy outfit to through on when in doubt.

CAMO JACKET - not an investment piece but definitely worth a buy!
YES, I did fall for the camo trend and although I was looking for more creative ways to wear it too - I wanted the basic jacket to throw over a cute outfit.
I purchased it for $10 at BLACK MARKET VINTAGE, and they've still got a few left, so Torontonians - it's your best bet. You can also find great look-a-likes online for low, low prices. This isn't a trend you'll want to dish a lot for because a) the cheaper ones are usually original and better quality b) it might not stick around for too long/ or it'll be in out in out.

CIRCLE SCARF - take your time, find the right piece for you because you'll want to wear it forever!
I didn't jump right on the circle scarf bandwagon like I did with camo jackets. I've had one too many bad experiences with rushed purchases in the hats-scares-gloves department and my big box of unused wacky, tacky and out of date finds were just taking up space.
I ended up shelling out $30 bucks for this at LITTLE BURGUNDY, after months of forcing myself to leave behind so-so finds, I regret nothing because I fell in love with this find and plan to use it forever - well basically.

PACT Fashion at FAT Toronto

So here`s a a little project I’ve been working on behind your backs! Through a program called PACT (see more here) I got to volunteer and participate in a prom-themed fashion show at this weeks Fashion Arts Toronto (FAT). I sewed the dress second to the right in the picture above. I’ve included a couple more pictures from the amazing whirlwind of a night below.

The dresses will be on sale at 69 Vintage (here)within the next month. Proceeds go in part to the designers (who hand sewed the pieces) and to PACT.

I wore this to dinner Sunday at my friends house. My face looks a little well... crazy, because it was insanely windy out and my hair kept getting in my face! I love this tan skirt and my oxford heels but I haven't had a chance to wear them out yet... so this weekend I finally took 'em out of the closet!

H&M seems to be quite on top of trend this season (but with the rate at which they put out new merchandise - who's really surprised) and is bringing in everyone's new favourites: PASTELS. You can also catch other key trends in store that aren't as popular yet but are destined to be on everyone's must have list by May: peplum trims and eyelet fabric. Marc Jacob's Louis Vuitton S/S 2012 is a clear influence on the collection but H&M seems to have outdone Jacobs, making a much more wearable collection. While I am usually a fan of the designer, I was unimpressed with this collection. The eyelet detailing, the bright pastel fabrics and the dip dyed feathers are marvelous ideas but the cuts were so unflattering, even on the beautiful lanky models, now let-alone an average woman. They were boxy and awkward and just looked much too big for the models but the idea was there - the unique fabrics and colours are still wearable and now thanks to H&M, affordable too.

In keeping with this American Dream / pastel theme, here is my song for the day. Kimbra's (now best known for her collaboration with Gotye) "Settle Down" is beautiful and creepy but still an incredibly catchy tune you won't be able to help but hum along to.

I ordered this vintage lace bralette from etsy a couple weeks ago. I love adding cute pieces like this to my everyday outfits to add a touch of femininity and brighten up my often dark wardrobe! Can't wait to wear it to the beach and under big tanks, the lace sides hanging out.

Neon

Just last year - I would've thought anyone crazy if they'd predicted neon was ever going to make a comeback, then again, I didn't ever think this trend can look so classy and sophisticated. S/S 2012 brings plenty of bright shades. Barbie pink, tangerine and yellow are the most popular, showing up on runways on blazers, dress and accessories. It's exciting, youthful and fresh.

To wear this trend, either wear one key piece in neon or single neon pieces (shirts or bottoms) with white. You can also achieve the same eye-popping affect by wearing a white lace dress with cute florescent accessories.

Pastels

Pastels were the biggest shocker of SS 2012 - while the last couple of seasons have been all about edgy, raw and often androgynous dressing this season is a complete curve ball. While the loose fitting dresses and boyish trousers are still a hit, everything is done in more happy, shall we say, feminine, colours. Mint green is definitely the favourite (as predicted by Gaga last season) but bright yellows and pretty pinks are also making a huge comeback.

MARIOS SCHWAB - ALEXANDER McQUEEN - LOUIS VUITTON - CHANEL

To emulate this trend avoid black completely. Go for off-white basics and a key pastel piece, plenty of floral accessories and maybe a neon bag or shoe to off-set the soft girly colours. Global Prints

It's a given that prints will always be in style but each year we obsess over different styles of print. This year we saw many global prints, mostly inspired by African and South American culture. With a wave of new interest in the 1960s - 70s boho style we've seen many global styles hit the runway in the past couple of years: embroidered folk blouses, western fringe, kimonos and firey reds, Aztec prints. Though this trend seems to be dying down, African and South American influence is still clear on many runways from Burberry to LAMB to Donna Karan.

To emulate this trend start with earthy basics: beige, brown, black, khaki. Build up with geometric accessories and maybe a cool fishtail braid. A signature outfit in this trend is a loose fitting dress with a wooden or craved bangle, add brass jewelry and wear minimal makeup.
