I'm back with some more inspiration using my brand new Metamorphosis digital papercrafting collection. In case you missed it, you can check out the release video and the card inspiration video using the links below. In this post, I've got an art journal page to share with you. This type of project is a bit more involved than my usual cards, so the video is a little longer than my usual as well. I recommend grabbing a coffee or your favorite beverage and giving yourself some time to sit back and enjoy watching the process.

I started with a base layer using Distress Inks in Rusty Hinge, Dusty Concord, and Uncharted Mariner, blended on with a brayer. Next, I added one of my stencil techniques on top using the same inks.

For the second stencil layer, I used Ground Espresso Distress Oxide spray instead, along with one of my favorite stencil techniques. Make sure to head over to my YouTube channel to see all the details.

Once the background was completed, I began adding some of the papers and ephemera from my Metamorphosis collection. I walk you through how I select the various pieces in the video as well.

I finished the page with a mix of Tim Holtz and 49 and Market stamps, plus white splatters using Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleedproof White to tie everything together. The stencils I used throughout are both Tim Holtz — the Grid Dot and the Deco Leaf.

From Background to Finished Card | More Ways to Use Tim Holtz Distress Crayons

I recently had the pleasure of creating a tutorial for the Ranger Ink YouTube channel, and I am so excited to share all the details with you here on the blog! The video focuses on three different ways to use Distress Crayons with stencils to create beautiful backgrounds, and today I'm walking you through how I finished off the cards with layered embellishment clusters. These cards have such a gorgeous vintage botanical vibe and I think you're going to love them!

Before we dive into the finishing details, you'll want to head over to the Ranger Ink YouTube channel to watch the full background tutorial. I cover three techniques — applying Distress Crayons directly through the stencil, lifting color with a baby wipe, and monoprinting with the stencil. Each one gives you a completely different look and they're all so fun to try!

Stamping the Images

For the focal images, I used the Tim Holtz Botanic Collage Stamp set, stamping onto Distress Watercolor Cardstock with Black Soot Archival Ink. I stamped each image twice — once to have the individual flower and butterfly images to color and die cut, and a second time to keep the full stamped image intact for layering.

Watercoloring with Distress Crayons

To add color to the flowers and butterflies, I used Distress Crayons in Peeled Paint, Peacock Feathers, Rusty Hinge, and Fossilized Amber, with Black Soot for the butterfly bodies. I picked up the color directly from the crayon using a water brush and painted in the images. This is such a beautiful way to use the crayons — the colors blend so naturally and the watercolor cardstock handles the water beautifully.

Die Cutting the Images

Once the watercoloring was complete and dry, I cut out the individual flowers and butterflies using the coordinating die sets, available exclusively from Simon Says Stamp.

Creating the Ephemera Pieces

For additional layering pieces, I also stamped images from the Tim Holtz Field Notes Stamp set onto Distress Watercolor Cardstock using Black Soot Archival Ink, then cut them out using the coordinating die sets, also available exclusively from Simon Says Stamp.

To give both the Botanic Collage full stamped image pieces and the Field Notes ephemera pieces an aged, distressed look, I used the ink smooshing technique. I smooshed an Old Paper Distress Ink pad onto my craft mat, spritzed it with water, and then pressed the paper into the ink. After drying with my heat tool, I trimmed the pieces down to size. For even more texture, I tore some of the edges of the paper and inked the non-torn edges with Distress Ink in Walnut Stain.

Film Strips and Photo Frames

I die cut the film strips and photo frames using the Tim Holtz Vault Picture Show Die Set, cutting them from Black Kraftstock. I then lightly sanded them to create a distressed effect — such a simple step but it makes such a difference!

Sentiments

For the sentiments, I used the Tim Holtz Vault Handwritten Celebrate Die Set, cutting them from copper/rose gold metallic cardstock. The metallic finish adds a beautiful pop against all the layered textures.

4 Ways to Use Metamorphosis: A Cardmaking Tutorial

Now that Metamorphosis is out in the world, I wanted to show you what you can actually do with it. I made four cards using the A2 size papers and ephemera from the collection, each one building on the last. Whether you're new to mixed media or you like to layer it on thick, there's a card here for you.

All four cards use the A2 size papers as the base layer. On all of them, I inked the edges of the papers and ephemera with Ground Espresso Distress Ink and added white splatters with Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleedproof White.

Card No. 1 — Keeping It Simple

This one's a good starting point if you're new to the collection or to mixed media. Just an A2 size paper as the base and two pieces of ephemera on top. Sometimes simple is all a card needs.

Card No. 2 — Adding More Layers

This card adds more ephemera on top of an A2 size paper base. In the video, I walk through how I choose which pieces to use together and how I layer them for balance — one of the questions I get asked most.

Card No. 3 — Embossing and Luster Wax

Here I used an embossing folder on one of the A2 size papers, then Sizzix Luster Wax to make that embossed design pop. I share tips for getting a clean embossed design, plus how to distress ephemera pieces with a sanding disc and Distress Ink. I also show a few different A2 paper options for the base layer.

Card No. 4 — Texture Paste for Serious Texture

This one starts with Clear Gesso on the printed A2 size paper, which helps it hold up to mixed media techniques. Once that's dry, I add texture paste through a stencil for real dimension. Same as the others, I talk through how I chose the ephemera to finish it off.

Introducing Metamorphosis: My First Digital Papercrafting Collection

For months, I've been working on something I've shared with only a couple of creative friends and my husband. Today however, I'm finally sharing it with all of you: my first ever digital paper crafting collection, called Metamorphosis!

Yes, it's about butterflies. But it's about so much more than that too. It's about me, and the journey I went on creating this collection.

Why "Metamorphosis"

Many years ago, I did graphic design work for a scrapbooking company. When I left, I stepped away from digital paper design entirely and focused on the card making and mixed media work you've come to know me for here. But digital design never really left me — it stayed quietly in the back of my mind as something I loved, even though I didn't yet have the confidence to pursue it entirely on my own.

Recently, inspired by another artist in our creative community, I started thinking hard about where I wanted to go next. Designing this collection — every step of it — became its own journey of rediscovering that confidence and creativity. When you hear the name Metamorphosis, I want you to picture butterflies, of course. But I also want it to represent my own creative journey: becoming someone who trusts her own voice enough to put something entirely her own out into the world.

This collection contains all the things I love — the colors, the imagery, the little details — and I hope that comes through in every piece.

What's Next

I'm not going anywhere with my regular mixed media videos — those will resume shortly. As you can now understand, I had to take a break from them to focus on this new path in my creative journey. Celebrate 25 Years of Sizzix: A Grungy Industrial Birthday Card with Seth Apter Word Wafers Birthday Die Set

The Sizzix 25th Birthday celebration continues, and today I'm sharing some inspiration using the Word Wafers Birthday die set designed by Seth Apter. In true Seth Apter fashion, these dies have a wonderful grunginess built right in, making them absolutely perfect for creating a grundy industrial birthday card.

Creating the Background

For this card, I did something I don't normally do — I dug into my scrap bin and found a background I hadn't used yet. Because of that, I'm not 100% sure of the exact colors, but I believe it started with a piece of black cardstock. I used a brayer to lightly apply acrylic paint in what look to be Distress Paint colors of Rusty Hinge, Salvaged Patina, and possibly Walnut Stain.

I took that piece of cardstock and embossed it with the Seth Apter Dot Matrix embossing folder, then rubbed Sizzix Luster Wax in Gold over the surface to bring out the textured design and enhance the distressed effect.

Creating the Sentiment

For the sentiment, I used the Celebrate die from the Word Wafers Birthday set. I cut the base layer from Distress Watercolor Cardstock and ink smooshed it into Old Paper Distress Ink, then inked the edges with Ground Espresso Distress Ink. I die cut the detail layer from Tim Holtz Black Kraftstock and lightly sanded it to reveal the kraft-colored core underneath, adding even more to that distressed feel. The numbers are from the Seth Apter Borderlines die set — I cut those from Kraftstock, sanded them the same way, then trimmed them into several pieces and tucked them behind the focal image.

Finishing the Card

To finish the card, I layered everything onto a piece of Sizzix Sandable Cardstock in brown and burnt orange, then sanded the edges to reveal the lighter core color underneath.

And there you have it — a grungy industrial birthday card perfect for anyone who loves this style or color combination! I hope this gave you a bit of inspiration using the Seth Apter Word Wafers Birthday dies as we continue celebrating 25 years of Sizzix. Sizzix Turns 25! A Birthday Card with Tim Holtz Gertrude Colorize & Celebration Streamers

Today's post is a bit of a stroll down memory lane, and it comes at a really fitting moment. Sizzix — the company that's been part of my papercrafting journey since I first started scrapbooking — is celebrating their 25th birthday this month, and I couldn't be more happy to be part of it.

It's got me thinking about just how long I've been enjoying this hobby, and how much both I and the industry have changed over 25 years. Truth be told, I started scrapbooking a few years before Sizzix came along, but they've been with me for most of the ride.

I still remember my very first die cutting machine — the original red Sizzix machine with the pull-lever that pushed straight down to cut through the dies. Affectionately known as "Big Red" back in the day, I actually won mine at a scrapbook crop, and I fondly recall using it with Sizzix alphabet dies to cut out titles for my scrapbook pages. Whether I've been using a die cutting machine, punches, or an electronic cutting machine since then, die cutting has always been one of my favorite ways to create and embellish my projects — and I think a lot of that traces back to that original Sizzix machine.

Fast forward to today, and I've been a Tim Holtz Maker with Sizzix since 2020 and a Creative Team Member since 2023. Who would have thought, all those years ago, that I'd still love paper crafting and die cutting this much — or that I'd still be connected to this company after so many years?

Over the years this hobby has given me so much more than scrapbook pages and finished cards — it's given me a creative outlet, a way to work with my hands, and a community of people who feel like friends. There's something about the process itself — cutting, layering, building something from a blank piece of paper — that still brings me so much joy, all these years later.

That's exactly why celebrations like this one mean so much to me.

About the Collection

To celebrate this milestone, each of the Sizzix Licensed Designers created a brand new celebration themed die, stamp, stencil set or embossing folder. This release brings together designs from Tim Holtz, 49 and Market, Eileen Hull, Stacey Park, Shelly Kim, Catherine Pooler, Willow Wolfe, Vicki Boutin, and Seth Apter.

There's Willow Wolfe's Birthday Blooms stamp set with its beautiful hummingbird and floral wreath designs, Catherine Pooler's Let's Eat Cake dies and stencils, and Eileen Hull's Party Time embossing folder that's perfect for quick, textured backgrounds like the one I used on my card and of course Tim Holtz's Celebration Steamers die set that I'm using for this project. Whatever your style, there's something in this collection to celebrate with.

The Card

For the focal point on my card, I used the Tim Holtz Gertrude Colorize die in the larger original size. I die cut all of the layers from Distress Watercolor Cardstock. I then ink blended the various layers, working from lighter tones into deeper shadows and details. Walnut Stain, Vintage Photo and Ground Espresso gave her those darker patches, Pumice Stone and Antique Linen softened things out, Wild Honey added warmth, and a bit of Black Soot and Spun Sugar finished off the fine details and her ears.

The background is created by embossing a piece of Distress Watercolor cardstock using the Tim Holtz Numbered Large A5 Embossing Folder. I then added splatters using Distress Ink in Saltwater Taffy, Speckled Egg, and Dried Marigold.

To add to the birthday scene, the streamers are die cut from Distress Watercolor cardstock using the new Tim Holtz Celebration Streamers die set. I ink blended them using the same three Distress Ink colors that I used on for the background splatters. I used a heavy hand for the darker shadow areas and a light blend over the highlight sections. To give Gertrude some birthday flair, I added the party hat from the Colorize Large Accessories set, and those little glasses just give her so much personality. The presents underneath her are cut from Distress Watercolor cardstock using the Tim Holtz Santa's Helper die set and ink blended to coordinate with the rest of the card.

A Mixed Media Father's Day Card | Tim Holtz Theodore Colorize

The best cards are the ones that feel made for someone, and that's exactly what I had in mind when I created this Father's Day card. My stepdad is a private pilot, so the travel theme, the airplanes, and the vintage ticket all came together with him in mind. I used the Tim Holtz Vault World Traveler die set for those little airplane accents, and Theodore just happened to be the perfect passenger.

Meet Theodore

If you haven't met Theodore yet, he's part of the Tim Holtz Sizzix Colorize collection — and he is absolutely the most charming bear in a bow tie you'll ever put on a card. For this project, I cut him from pre-colored cardstock rather than building custom color with inks or paint, which makes the process so much faster while still giving you that gorgeous layered Colorize look.

The Card

The background has a lot going on in the best possible way — it's layered, textured, and has that vintage travel feel that I just love. I used the Honey Bee Stamps Aviator stamp along with Tim Holtz Numeric and Mini Set 11 stencils to build up the background, and the technique I used to pull it all together is one I taught in my Steampunk Vibes class. The color palette leans into those warm, earthy tones with hints of teal and blue — perfect for a masculine card without feeling flat or boring.

The sentiment is a combination of the Tim Holtz Handwritten Celebrate die set for the script "happy" and a stamp from the Scrapbook.com Celebrate Expressions set for the "Father's Day" label strip. The vintage ticket in the background is from the Tim Holtz Ticket Booth stamp set, which adds that perfect touch of worn, travel-worn charm.

Christmas Home Decor Tag | Tim Holtz Sizzix Colorize + Accessories

If the Halloween tag I shared earlier this week had you excited about the new Sizzix Colorize + Accessories collection, just wait until you see this one! Meet Harrison the lion — and he is dressed to the nines and ready for Christmas!

This project was also featured in Tim's live release party on YouTube, so if you caught the live you may have already spotted him! If you missed it, the replay is up on Tim's channel and I cannot recommend it enough. Seeing all of the inspiration from the designers in one place is so much fun, and this collection truly lends itself to so many creative possibilities. The Mini Colorize characters, the re-released originals, and the Accessories dies are such a brilliant combination — you really can create something unique for every season and occasion.

Harrison is wearing his best top hat with a sprig of holly and a dapper bow tie, surrounded by Christmas gifts and that gorgeous pine trim along the bottom. I used Christmas themed ephemera for the background to give it that warm, vintage holiday feel. Just like with my Halloween tag, I colored all of the die cut pieces with Distress Paints and I cannot imagine going back to anything else. The paint holds up so beautifully during assembly — no worrying about smudging or smearing while you're layering everything together.

The Distress Paint colors I used for Harrison are: Antique Linen, Frayed Burlap, Brushed Corduroy, Gathered Twigs, Walnut Stain and Black Soot.

The Distress Paint colors I used for the presents and the hat trim are: Lumberjack Plaid, Peeled Paint and Rustic Wilderness.

This is also made on a Tim Holtz Etc Tag, so just like Winifred's Halloween tag, Harrison is sturdy enough to display as a home decor piece all through the Christmas season. I am already thinking about where to put him! And this size is even small enough that this could easily be turned into a Christmas ornament by adding a bit of ribbon or twine!

Tim Holtz Sizzix Colorize + Accessories | Vintage Halloween Tag

If you love Halloween as much as I do, this one is for you! I am so excited to share this mixed media Halloween tag I created using the brand new Sizzix Colorize + Accessories collection from Tim Holtz — and this project was actually featured in Tim's live release party on YouTube!

If you missed the live, you can head over to his channel and watch the replay — the inspiration was absolutely incredible and so worth your time. This release brought back the beloved Colorize animal characters in their original size AND in a smaller Mini size, perfect for tags, cards, and smaller projects, plus two new Accessories die sets in both large and small sizes. The accessories are a total game changer — hats, scarves, masks, party hats, witch hats, and so much more — giving you endless ways to customize these characters for any season or occasion. Halloween? Christmas? Birthdays? You can dress them for anything!

For my project I chose the Mini Winifred the zebra, and of course she had to be dressed for Halloween. I used the Winifred Mini Colorize die along with the Accessories dies to give her a witch hat, a mask, and a trick-or-treat bucket. She is absolutely perfect for the season!

The background was created using the Tim Holtz Moon Mask with Distress Oxide inks — I love how the moody nighttime sky came together with that gorgeous full moon. For coloring the die cut pieces, I reached for my Distress Paints instead of my usual Distress Inks. I am so glad I did! The paint is much more durable during assembly — no worrying about wet fingers, inky hands, or liquid adhesive messing up your beautifully colored pieces while you're layering everything together. It's a trick I'll be using from now on when I want to custom color my die cuts!

I finished the tag off with Tim Holtz ephemera, some stitching, trim along the bottom, the "Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus" sentiment, and the clip at the top. This is made on a Tim Holtz Etc Tag which is a sturdy board material, so this piece works beautifully as a home decor item — perfect for displaying all through the Halloween season!

Seth Apter Sizzix Mixed Media Card | Creative Die Cut Technique

If you've been crafting for a while, you probably have a collection of dies that you use the same way every single time. Today I want to challenge that! I'm sharing a mixed media card made with the latest Seth Apter Sizzix release, and my favorite part of this project is how I pushed the dies beyond their intended use. Sometimes the most interesting results come from asking "what else can this do?"

Think Outside the Die

The Seth Apter Mini Pages die set is designed to create a folded mini book or page, but here I used it purely as a design element — no folding required. I layered it with the dotted die from the Seth Apter Paper Cutz 2 die set, positioning it to cut the design the full length of the Mini Pages die cut. The result is a beautifully detailed panel that looks intentional and intricate, and nobody would ever guess it started as a booklet die!

The other technique I want to highlight is using the Seth Apter Magic Mesh embossing folder on a die cut rather than on flat cardstock. I embossed the butterfly after die cutting it from the Tim Holtz Tattered Butterflies die set, and the mesh texture on those irregular butterfly edges is just chef's kiss. It adds so much depth and visual interest to the focal element.

How to Make This Card

Start with a piece of white cardstock cut to 4.5 x 6.25 inches and ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Cut a piece of blue kraft stock or cardstock to 2.75 x 6 inches. Stamp across the surface using the dotted stamp from the Seth Apter Viewfinder Stamp and Die Set with Twilight Versafine Clair Ink, or a slightly darker ink than your cardstock color. If you're using kraft stock, lightly sand the edges with fine grit sandpaper or a Ranger Sanding Disk. If you're using regular cardstock, ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Adhere this to the card front, but leave the right-hand side unattached so you can tuck the circle die cuts underneath later.

Cut circles from black kraft stock using the Seth Apter Twisters Die Set and lightly sand the edges with fine grit sandpaper or a Ranger Sanding Disk. Tuck these under the right side of the blue panel and adhere in place.

Now for the Mini Pages panel. Die cut a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the Seth Apter Mini Pages die set. Then take the dotted die from the Seth Apter Paper Cutz 2 die set and position it to cut the design across the full length of the Mini Pages die cut — you're using it as a design element here, not as a folded booklet. Use a baby wipe to apply Distress Paint in Salvaged Patina across the surface. Ink the edges and here and there over the surface with Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Adhere this layer to the card.

Next, take one of the outer dies from the Paper Cutz 2 set and cut another piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock. Spray with Old Paper Distress Spray Stain and a little water, then dry with a heat tool. Stamp the splatter image from the Seth Apter Viewfinder Stamp and Die Set using Walnut Stain Distress Ink. Ink the edges with Walnut Stain Distress Ink and adhere to the card with double-sided foam tape for dimension.

For the butterfly, die cut a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the larger butterfly from the Tim Holtz Tattered Butterflies die set. Emboss it using the Seth Apter Magic Mesh embossing folder — this is where the magic happens, because that mesh texture on the shaped butterfly edges is incredible. Apply Distress Paint in Salvaged Patina and Uncharted Mariner using a baby wipe. Once dry, add Distress Paint in Peeled Paint here and there. When the paint is fully dry, apply Sizzix Luster Wax in Rose Gold to the raised embossed design using your finger. For the butterfly body, cut a piece of black kraft stock using a cross image from the Seth Apter Roundabouts Die Set and lightly sand the edges. Adhere both the body and the butterfly to the card with double-sided foam tape for dimension.

I tucked a few vintage postage stamps here and there for an extra pop of color and visual interest. Mine happen to be Queen Juliana stamps sent to me by my friend Saskia from the Netherlands — they're quite special to me, and yes, you can probably guess why! If you don't have vintage stamps, the Tim Holtz Postmarked Sticker Book is a great alternative and would give you a similar look.

The final touch is the sentiment, a sticker from the Minty Art Journal Essentials Paper Stickers in Black. "Be the artist of your own life" felt like the perfect note to end on for a card built around creative experimentation.

Stretch Your Supplies | One Die Three Ways — Seth Apter Sizzix Release

If you've ever looked at a die and thought "I could get more out of this" — this post is for you! I am so excited to share three mixed media cards using the Gridiron Die from the new Seth Apter Sizzix release, and you guys, we are squeezing every last bit of mileage out of this one die. We're using it as a die cut, an embossing folder, AND a stencil — and the three cards couldn't look more different.

Technique No. 1 — Die as a Die Cut

The number die cut is from the Seth Apter Borderlines Die Set, cut from Black Kraft Stock and lightly sanded with fine grit sandpaper, then trimmed and adhered above and below the flower.

For the flower, I die cut the layers from Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the Tim Holtz Brushstroke Flowers 2 Die Set and painted each layer using a water brush with Distress Paints in Seedless Preserves, Dusty Concord, Peeled Paint, Forest Moss, Fossilized Amber, and Vintage Photo. One thing I've been loving about painting my die cuts lately — once the paint is dry it's permanent, so I never have to worry about liquid adhesive reacting with the ink and causing issues when I'm assembling the layers.

The ephemera pieces are stamps from the Tim Holtz Tidbits and Curator Stamp Sets, stamped with Black Soot Archival Ink onto Distress Watercolor cardstock lightly sprayed with Old Paper Distress Spray Stain, trimmed to size, and edged with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

To finish off the card I used a sentiment from the Mintay Art Journal Essentials Paper Stickers Black.

Technique No. 2 — Die as an Embossing Folder

For the full background details, be sure to watch the video! The finished card is 4.25 x 5.5 inches, layered onto white cardstock with Walnut Stain inked edges.

The wonky circle die cut is from the Seth Apter Twisters Die Set, cut from Black Kraft Stock, lightly sanded, trimmed, and adhered above and below the flower.

The off-white layers were made using the Seth Apter Viewfinder Stamp and Die Set, the same way as described for the Art Heals card above.

For the flower, I die cut the layers from Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the Tim Holtz Brushstroke Flowers 2 Die Set and painted each layer with a water brush using Distress Paints in Mustard Seed, Fossilized Amber, Peeled Paint, Forest Moss, Vintage Photo, and Ground Espresso. Technique No. 3 — Die as a Stencil

For the full background details, be sure to watch the video! The finished card is 4.25 x 5.5 inches, layered onto white cardstock with the edges inked with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

The off-white layers were made using the Seth Apter Viewfinder Stamp and Die Set, the same way as described for the Art Heals card above.

The black number die cut is from the Seth Apter Stretchers Die Set, cut from Black Kraft Stock, lightly sanded, trimmed, and adhered on top of the previous layer.

For the butterflies, I die cut the layers from Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the Tim Holtz Brushstroke Butterflies Die Set and painted each layer with a water brush using Distress Paints in Seedless Preserves and Dusty Concord. The bodies of the butterflies are cut from Black Kraft Stock and lightly sanded using fine grit sand paper. I used double-sided foam adhesive to add dimension to some of the die cuts.

The ephemera pieces are stamps from the Tim Holtz Curator Stamp Sets, stamped with Black Soot Archival Ink onto Distress Watercolor cardstock lightly sprayed with Old Paper Distress Spray Stain, trimmed, and edged with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

Tim Holtz Distress Paints Are Back | Gel Plate Art Journal Background

If you've been in the Tim Holtz world for any length of time, you probably remember when Ranger retired a bunch of the Distress Paint colors — and if you're anything like me, you were a little bummed about it. Well, the good news is they're back! And to celebrate, I decided to do something a little outside my comfort zone and create an art journal page using the re-released Distress Paints with a gel plate. Art journaling and paint aren't really my go-to — yet anyway — but that's kind of the point. Sometimes you just have to give yourself permission to play, and in my latest video that's exactly what I did.

Giving Yourself Permission to Play

I've been wanting to explore art journaling and paint more for a while now, and taking a class recently with Seth Apter really reignited that desire. When I heard the Distress Paints were coming back, it felt like the perfect push to just go for it. I'm not an expert in art journaling or paint, but I'm sharing this anyway because I think it's important to create outside your comfort zone — and honestly, I had so much fun with it. If you've been on the fence about trying something new, I hope this gives you that little nudge.

The Believe in Yourself Art Journal Pages

In the video I'm sharing the background techniques — how I used Distress Paints, stencils, a gel plate, and a brayer to build up those warm, golden, layered backgrounds you see across both pages of the spread. After filming, I went ahead and finished the pages too, and I'm sharing all of those details here.

To create the background for my art journal pages I used Distress Paint in Pumice Stone, Scattered Straw, Forest Moss, Shabby Shutters and Aged Mahogany. Head over to my YouTube channel to check out all the details on how I created the background using the paints, stencils, a gel plate and a brayer.

To add more interest to the background I added some stamping using Archival Ink in Frayed Burlap and a mix of Tim Holtz stamps including French Marketplace, Field Notes, Illustrated Garden, Flowershop and Bird Feather. I recommend using a permanent ink such as Archival Ink when stamping over paint as it will dry quickly and will be permanent.

Once the stamping was completed I went about sorting through my Tim Holtz paper scraps and ephemera pieces to create a layered cluster for each page. I also added an old book page. I used some similar pieces such as the same patterned paper, old book page and colors to keep things cohesive. I also inked the edges of the pieces with Walnut Stain Distress Ink.

I also die cut a viewfinder from Black Kraftstock using the Tim Holtz Vault Picture Show Die Set, sanded the edges with a sanding disc. I cut it in half and tucked one piece into the layers of each side of the spread.

I then finished off the pages with some white ink splatters and added some Stabilo pencil work around the outer edge of the patterned paper pieces. I then went about adhering the various layers together and then finally to the page itself.

A Graduation Shaker Card

Graduation season is here, and I cannot believe how fast time flies! My youngest niece is graduating from high school this year, and of course I had to make her a card. I wanted to create something special and a little extra fun, so I went with a shaker card combining pieces from the new Scrapbook.com Graduation Bundle with some Tim Holtz Idea-ology papers from my stash.

The result is a 4.75 x 6 inch card packed with blue and gold sequins, a dramatic black silhouette graduation scene, and all the celebratory feels!

Building the Shaker

I started by die cutting a piece of blue patterned paper using the Scrapbook.com Nested Stitched Stamps die to create the shaker window. I cut a piece of acetate to fit behind the opening and adhered it to the back side of the paper. Then I added double-sided foam tape around the entire perimeter of the opening, making sure all the pieces were butted up tightly against each other to keep the sequins from escaping!

For the shaker background, I sprayed a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock with Distress Spray in Faded Jeans and Pumice Stone, then ran it through the Scrapbook.com Polka Dot Embossing Folder. To finish it off, I rubbed a little Sizzix Luster Wax in Gold over the embossed texture. Most of this layer ends up hidden behind the sequin mix, but it's still a fun little detail to create — and you'll know it's there! I cut this piece to fit the back of the shaker window.

Before sealing everything up, I added a mix of sequins along with some extra graduation caps die cut from black cardstock. Once the shaker was filled and sealed, I backed the whole piece with a piece of Tim Holtz Idea-ology patterned paper.

Finishing the Card

I distressed the edges of the patterned paper layer and layered it onto a piece of black cardstock. The focal image — the graduation silhouette — is die cut from black cardstock using the Scrapbook.com Graduation Bundle dies. I finished the card with a "Congratulations" sentiment stamped from the Scrapbook.com So Proud Of You stamp set.

I think she's going to love it! 🎓

How to Use Distress Embossing Glaze | 3 Mixed Media Techniques

I recently had the pleasure of creating a tutorial for the Ranger Ink YouTube channel featuring Tim Holtz Distress Embossing Glaze, and I am so excited to share these tags with you today! The glaze is translucent, which means you can use it like a traditional embossing powder but still see color and detail through it — and the vintage mixed media results are absolutely stunning.

What is Distress Embossing Glaze?

If you've ever picked up the Distress Embossing Glaze and wondered what to do with it or how it's different from a regular embossing powder, you're not alone! The key is that it's translucent — so instead of covering your image or texture with an opaque color, the glaze allows the color and detail underneath to show through while still adding that beautiful raised, dimensional finish. Once you see it in action, it all clicks!

The Background Techniques

In the Ranger Ink video, I walk through three different ways to use the Distress Embossing Glaze — with an embossing folder, with stamped images, and combined with Distress Translucent Crackle Paste through a stencil. Each technique produces a completely different look, and I use Distress Spray Stains and Distress Paint to add color and bring out all that beautiful texture and detail. The Embellishments

Once the backgrounds were complete, I had so much fun layering in the embellishments to give each tag that eclectic, vintage collector feel. Each tag features a vintage portrait photo as the focal point, framed with postage stamps and layered with Tim Holtz die cuts — butterflies, florals, leaves, and architectural elements — along with sentiment labels that really bring the whole story together. The combination of the glazed, textured backgrounds with all those layered details gives each tag a rich, curiosity cabinet quality that I just love.

For the embellishments on this tag, I die cut a couple of butterflies from Distress Watercolor Cardstock using the Scribbly Butterflies die set. I sprayed them with Distress Spray Stain in Fossilized Amber and inked the edges with Distress Ink in Walnut Stain. I then layered in an antique portrait from the Tim Holtz Photomatic set, tucking a few stamps from the Tim Holtz Postmarked Sticker Book behind it. A sentiment from the Tim Holtz Quote Chips labels finished everything off perfectly.

For this tag I followed a similar process, die cutting the Tim Holtz Vault Funky Floral Wreath die set and spraying it with Scorched Timber Distress Spray Stain. The flowers and leaves were inked individually with Distress Ink in Rusty Hinge, Peeled Paint, Forest Moss, Salvaged Patina, Fossilized Amber, and Walnut Stain. I then finished it off with an antique portrait, a few stamps from the Tim Holtz Postmarked Sticker Book, and a sentiment from the Tim Holtz Quote Chips labels, just as I did on the first tag.

For the final tag, I die cut the globe images using the Tim Holtz Vault World Travel die set and heat embossed them with gold embossing powder. After adhering them to the tag I trimmed off the excess. I then finished everything off with an antique portrait from the Tim Holtz Photomatic set, a few stamps from the Tim Holtz Postmarked Sticker Book, and a sentiment from the Tim Holtz Quote Chips labels.

No Embossing Folder? No Problem | Faux Embossing Background Technique

What if you could create a rich, textured background without an embossing folder? Today I'm sharing one of my favorite techniques using some of the newly released dies from the Tim Holtz Sizzix March release — and the best part is it works with any dies you already own.

The technique uses dies you already own and creates that beautiful raised, textured look without any special equipment. Add Distress Sprays and a little Foundry Wax and the results are stunning — this card has that vintage wanderlust vibe I absolutely love. You'll want to watch the video to see exactly how it all comes together!

The Faux Embossing Technique

The key to this technique is that you don't need specific dies — you can use whatever you have in your stash. Any die cut adhered to paper before adding color will create that raised, textured effect. For this card I used dies from the Tim Holtz Sizzix March release, which were previously released and retired and are now available again. So if you missed them the first time, this is a great opportunity to grab them!

For color I used Distress Spray Stains in Uncharted Mariner and Broken China, along with Distress Oxide Sprays in Uncharted Mariner and Weathered Wood. The good news is you don't need both types of sprays — use what you have, mix and match, or stick with one. That's the beauty of this technique: it's flexible and works with your stash.

Embossing Folder Background Techniques | Beginner to Advanced

If you've ever wondered how to get more out of your embossing folders, this tutorial is for you! Today I'm sharing three ways to use an embossing folder to create a mixed media card background, and we're going from beginner to advanced. Each technique builds on the last, so whether you're just getting started with mixed media or you're ready to layer in some more products and push your skills a little further, there's something here for you.

Three Levels, One Embossing Folder

The idea behind this tutorial is simple — take one embossing folder and show how you can use it three different ways, each one stepping up the complexity a little. No matter which technique you choose, the Sizzix Luster Wax is the secret weapon that ties them all together — it catches the raised areas of the embossed design and makes it pop beautifully every single time.

The beginner technique keeps things simple with colored cardstock, Luster Wax to highlight the embossed design, and inked edges using Distress Ink. It's approachable, low-risk, and gives you a gorgeous result with minimal supplies.

The intermediate technique introduces Distress Watercolor cardstock and Distress Spray Stains before adding the Luster Wax and inked edges. The Spray Stains sink into the watercolor cardstock beautifully, adding depth and color before the Luster Wax works its magic on the embossed design.

The advanced technique builds on the intermediate version by layering Distress Oxide Sprays on top of the Spray Stains before finishing with the Luster Wax and inked edges. It's the same process with one extra step, but that additional layer of color adds a richness that takes the background to a whole new level.

The Focal Point

While the focus of this tutorial is the background techniques, I also walk you through how I created the die cut focal point for each card using the new Sizzix Tim Holtz Vault Picture Wheel and Handwritten Thinlits Dies. One of my favorite things about the Handwritten dies is how beautifully they layer with the Alphanumeric Stretch Upper Case dies — and you'll see exactly how I used that combination on these cards.

Welcome to Part 2 of my mixed media cardmaking series! In Part 1, I walked you through building a layered background with seven different techniques. Today, I'm taking you step-by-step through creating the embellishments and assembling everything to complete this card. You'll see how I stamp and watercolor flowers, create a vintage ephemera piece, and use foam tape strategically to add beautiful dimension. Plus, I'm sharing some of my favorite tips and tricks that make the assembly process so much easier!

From Stamped Images to Finished Embellishments

One of the questions I get asked most often is how to take stamped images and turn them into polished, dimensional embellishments that look cohesive with your background. The key is in the details - how you color them, how you create supporting elements like ephemera, and how you plan your placement before anything gets adhered down.

In this tutorial, I'm using watercoloring to add soft, natural color to my stamped flowers. Watercoloring with dye inks gives you so much control - you can build up layers for depth, blend colors seamlessly, and create that loose, artistic look that works beautifully with mixed media backgrounds. The best part? You don't need special watercolor paints. Regular dye inks and a water brush work perfectly.

I'm also showing you how to create a vintage ephemera piece using stamps and inks to coordinate with your main elements. These little supporting pieces add so much to a design - they give you something to tuck behind your focal images and help tie everything together visually.

And here's the game changer: my Press & Seal technique for keeping die-cut pieces exactly where you want them while you add adhesive. This trick has saved me so much frustration over the years, and once you try it, you'll use it on every dimensional project!

Creating the Embellishments: Step-by-Step

Here's how I built the layers for this card:

Step 1: Stamping the Images

I stamped the outline flowers and leaves using waterproof ink on watercolor cardstock. Using waterproof ink is essential here since we'll be adding water for the coloring - you want those outlines to stay crisp.

Step 2: Watercoloring the Flowers and Leaves

Using a water brush and dye inks, I added color to each flower and leaf. I built up layers of color for depth and let each layer dry before adding more. The key is working with a light touch - you can always add more color, but it's harder to remove it.

Step 3: Die-Cutting the Elements

After all the stamping was completed, I used the coordinating dies to cut out each flower and leaf. Having dies that match your stamps makes this process so much easier and gives you clean, professional edges.

Step 4: Creating the Vintage Ephemera Piece

I stamped a ticket image and aged it using ink smooshing and edge inking, then added water splatters for that authentic vintage look. This piece will tuck behind the flowers to add visual interest and help ground the cluster.

Step 5: Adding Dimension with Foam Tape

I added foam tape to the backs of my pieces, creating different levels of dimension. Not everything needs to be popped up the same height - varying the dimension makes the design more interesting and realistic. Now, I already had a pretty good idea of where I wanted everything to go, so I jumped ahead to adding the foam tape. But if you're not sure about your layout yet, you might want to plan your placement first before adding adhesive.

Step 6: Planning the Final Layout

Even with foam tape already on, I still played with the placement to make sure I was happy with the arrangement. This is where my Press & Seal trick comes in handy - laying a sheet over the top lets me pick up all the pieces at once without them sticking together, flip it over if needed, and keep everything exactly where I want it during final assembly.

Step 7: Adding the Sentiment and Adhering to the Background

Finally, I adhered the completed background to my card base and added a sentiment sticker. I shared my tips for getting everything straight and centered without measuring.

Today I'm kicking off a two-part mixed media cardmaking series, and I'm so excited to share my approach for creating layered backgrounds! If you've ever wondered how to layer mixed media techniques without ending up with a muddy mess, this tutorial is for you. I'm walking you through building a textured background using stencils, stamps, inks, and paste—and more importantly, I'm sharing why the order matters and how understanding your mediums can make all the difference.

Understanding Mixed Media: It's All About Planning

When it comes to mixed media cardmaking, a little planning goes a long way. The biggest challenge people face isn't the techniques themselves—it's knowing what order to use them in so you don't create a muddy disaster or lose the crisp details you worked so hard on.

Here's what I've learned: different mediums behave differently, and understanding those behaviors helps you make better decisions. Water-reactive inks (like dye inks) will reactivate when they get wet again, which means they can blend and move. Pigment inks are more permanent once they dry. And archival inks are waterproof, so they won't budge no matter what you layer on top of them.

This is why I always reach for waterproof or pigment inks when I'm stamping on mixed media backgrounds—I want those images to stay crisp even when I add more layers. But if you want a softer, blended look, regular dye inks can work beautifully too. There's no single "right" way—it's about understanding your supplies and choosing what works for the effect you want.

The same thinking applies to when you add texture paste, sprays, and inking. Some techniques need to go first (like paste through stencils—it's hard to stamp over bumpy texture!), while others work better as final layers (like shimmer sprays). Once you understand the "why" behind the order, you can experiment with confidence and even break the rules intentionally.

Building the Background: Seven Layers

For this card, I built the background using seven different techniques. You don't have to use all seven—you could pick just one or two and still create something beautiful. But I wanted to show you how layering multiple techniques creates depth and interest. Here's what I did:

Step 1: Monoprinting with Stencil

I started by applying dye ink directly to my stencil, spritzing it with water, and then pressing it onto watercolor cardstock to transfer the design. This creates a soft, watercolor-like background layer.

Step 2: Ink Smooshing

Next, I added subtle color by smooshing ink onto my craft mat, spritzing it with water, and tapping sections of my background into it. I dried this layer before moving on so the colors would build rather than blend.

Step 3: Partial Stamping for Texture

Using waterproof ink and background stamps (script and grid), I added random bits of stamped texture—not full crisp images, just hints here and there to create visual interest.

Step 4: Paste Through Stencil

I used a palette knife to spread metallic paste through my stencil, adding both texture and shimmer. This is one of those techniques you want to do after stamping, since it's tricky to stamp over bumpy paste.

Step 5: Shimmer Spray

A light misting of shimmer spray adds a subtle sparkle that catches the light beautifully in person (even if it doesn't always show up on camera!).

Step 6: Splatters with Shimmer Spray

I added a few deliberate splatters using spray ink to create organic texture and visual interest across the background.

Step 7: Ink Edges and Water Spray

Finally, I inked around the edges with a blending brush, then added water splatters with a spray bottle. As the water dried, it pulled the ink and created that beautiful vintage, weathered effect.

Again, you can mix and match any of these techniques or use just one or two. The key is going in an order that makes sense for the mediums you're working with. If you want to try all seven, just follow this sequence and you'll avoid those muddy-mess moments!

Migration Is Beautiful: Papercrafters Unite Against Racism 2026

Hello friends! Welcome to the Papercrafters Unite Against Racism Instagram Hop. I'm honored to join the papercrafting community once again to stand in solidarity with BIPOC, AAPI, Indigenous, Palestinian, and all oppressed communities in the ongoing fight for racial justice and equality.

Migration Is Beautiful

When I saw this phrase, it stopped me in my tracks. As someone who loves butterflies and incorporates them into my mixed media work, the connection felt immediate and profound. Migration—in all its forms—is an act of courage, survival, transformation, and hope.

The monarch butterfly travels up to 3,000 miles in its migration, following an ancient instinct passed down through generations. Families cross borders seeking safety, opportunity, and a better life for their children. And collectively, we continue the long migration toward justice, equity, and true equality. All of these journeys are beautiful. All of them matter.

The Card

For this project, I created a mixed media card featuring a bold butterfly die cut layered over vintage ephemera and an inky textured background. You can find a list of all of the supplies I used at the bottom of this post.

Creating the Background

I began by stamping a combination of ledger and script stamps onto Distress Watercolor Cardstock using Distress Archival Ink in Frayed Burlap. The stamps I used are Tim Holtz On The Farm and French Marketplace. Next, I added texture by applying Distress Textures Paste through the Tim Holtz Blossom Layering Stencil.

Once the paste was dry, I sprayed the paper with a combination of Distress Spray Stain in Tumbled Glass and Speckled Egg, plus a touch of Distress Oxide Spray in Speckled Egg. I finished by inking the edges with Distress Ink in Vintage Photo.

The Vintage Ephemera

The ephemera pieces were stamped onto Distress Watercolor Cardstock using Distress Archival Ink in Frayed Burlap. The stamp set used is the Tim Holt Field Notes. Before stamping, I ink smooshed the paper into Distress Ink in Old Paper to create a vintage effect. I then trimmed around the images with scissors and inked the edges with Vintage Photo.

The Butterfly

For the butterfly, I used the Tim Holtz Perspective Butterfly Die. I cut it once from Distress Black Heavystock and once from Distress Watercolor Cardstock. I carefully saved all the negative pieces from the watercolor cardstock die cut and adhered both the die cut shape and the negative pieces to white cardstock using a fine-tip liquid adhesive. Using scissors and a craft knife, I carefully trimmed around the entire piece.

Next, I used a waterbrush with Distress Ink in Crackling Campfire and Spiced Marmalade to watercolor the butterfly. Once the ink was dry, I layered the black die cut on top. I used a black marker to color around the edges of the die cut to cover any white showing, then adhered the completed butterfly to my background.

The Meaning

The layered, textured background represents the complexity of these issues. Nothing about this work is simple or one-dimensional. The vintage elements remind us that while this fight is long-standing, the urgency remains constant. And that vibrant butterfly? It's a reminder that migration, movement, change—and the people who embody these journeys—are not just necessary. They're beautiful.

Showing Up: The Ongoing Work

Anti-racism isn't a single moment or event. It's ongoing work that requires consistent action and commitment. Here are some of the ways I continue to show up:

Starting conversations when I witness racist experiences or hear racist comments—even when it's uncomfortable
Actively working to examine and change my own perceptions and biases
Taking the time to learn how to correctly pronounce people's names—it's a basic act of respect and recognition
Taking action through donating to organizations doing the work, signing petitions, making calls to representatives, and holding politicians accountable for their policies and actions

The goal of this hop is to continue raising awareness about anti-racism and to encourage everyone to find ways to show up for equity and equality in ways that make sense for you. Silence, inaction, and passivity are detrimental to justice. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."

Avoid the Ink Blending Rut | 3 Mixed Media Stencil Techniques

Today I'm sharing three completely different mixed media backgrounds that go way beyond basic ink blending, and I think you're going to love the variety of looks you can create.

In this video tutorial, I'm using the gorgeous new Beautiful Botanical Stencils from Vicki Boutin's first release with Sizzix. These botanical designs are stunning, but here's the best part - all of the techniques I'm sharing work with any stencils you already have in your stash. Whether you have florals, geometrics, or texture stencils sitting unused, this is your invitation to pull them out and play!

What You'll Learn

I'm walking you through three different mixed media stencil techniques to create unique card backgrounds:

Technique 1: Monoprinting with Stencils This technique creates one-of-a-kind prints that add unique layers of texture and interest. It's one of my favorite ways to add subtle pattern and interest without overwhelming your design.

Technique 2: Layering Texture Paste We'll explore using both translucent and opaque Distress Texture Paste through stencils to build dimension and depth. The combination of the two types of paste creates such beautiful, organic texture.
