2018 Illinois Bike Summit - Registration Now Open

Monday, May 7, 2018 at the University of Illinois in Chicago

Join us for a day of learning and networking with up to 300 bicycle advocates, planners, road engineers, elected officials, and others from around the state. With a range of session topics - from bikeway design and tips to advocacy and community engagement - the summit offers strategies to help you make progress in your town.

We're working to put together an exciting agenda for 2018, and we're pleased to announce that Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn and Chicago Department of Transportation Commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld will participate as keynote speakers.

Park Ridge Bicycle Plan Completed and Awaiting Approval by City Council

Ride Illinois has recently completed a municipal bicycle plan for Park Ridge and the plan will be up for approval at the City Council meeting on Monday, Feb. 12, 7pm at City Hall. If you're a resident of Park Ridge, we hope you'll join us at the city council meeting and voice your support.

The City of Park Ridge engaged Ride Illinois and Active Transportation Alliance as a bike planning consultant in the spring of 2017. The project involves an update to the original bike plan Ride Illinois created for the community in 2005 which was never fully implemented. The new, revised plan includes suggestions for a denser bike network, as well as non-infrastructure campaigns that will encourage more Park Ridge residents to ride.

Still Time to Apply for our Bike Safety Quiz Program

Ride Illinois was recently awarded a $55,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation's Injury Prevention Program to promote bicycle safety education in schools, driver education programs, and police departments. The grant will be used to incentivize schools and police departments to routinely use BikeSafetyQuiz.com in their classroom curricula, officer trainings, and community enforcement campaigns.

Program participants that successfully implement the quiz by September 2018 will receive cash awards. Our goal is to engage:
50 high schools and driver education programs and award up to $250 each
40 elementary schools and award up to $250 each
25 police departments and award up to $300 each
While many applications have already been received, and the vast majority will be accepted into the program, there's still time to apply or help us urge your local school to apply!

If your local schools are not on our list of current applicants, we invite you to download and share our informational letters with your schools' principals, drivers ed or physical education teachers. It's easy for schools to apply, participate, and become eligible for a cash award!

Every year, Ride Illinois helps to promote invitational rides coordinated by our affiliated bike clubs, charities, and other organizations throughout the state.

We're in the midst of preparing our annual ride mailing which includes brochures from many organized bike rides taking place around Illinois. Many of the rides are single-day, on a weekend, on relatively quiet rural roads, with a variety of mileage options. Some rides attract dozens, many others bring in hundreds, and a few range from 1,000 to 20,000 riders!

Interested in receiving the Annual Ride Mailing this March? All Ride Illinois members are guaranteed a packet. Become a member or renew your membership by Feb 15th, and you'll be added to the mailing list.

ACTION ALERT: Help Us Pass New Bike Safety Legislation

Please take a couple minutes to help Ride Illinois pass our state bicycle bill to legalize three common practices and clarify one law. House Bill 1784 would:

Allow motorists to pass bikes in a no-passing zone under certain conditions to improve cyclist safety.
Officially legalize bicycling on road shoulders, but not require it.
Allow bicyclists to use a rear light without also using a rear reflector.
Clarify the bicyclist lane position law, when the lane is too narrow for a car to pass with 3+ feet clearance.

The 2016 Ride Illinois Award Winners

On September 19, during our 2016 Illinois Bike Summit, Ride Illinois awarded the City of Aurora, City of Danville and George Bellovics for their significant achievements in bicycle advocacy.

The City of Aurora was presented with the Ride Illinois Project Award for an outstanding bikeway infrastructure project - the installation of curb-protected bike lanes on River Street this past spring.

The City of Danville was presented with the Ride Illinois Partnership Award for their exceptional participation in the Illinois Mayor's Bicycle Safety Challenge.

And George Bellovics, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Landscape Architect and Grand Illinois Trail Coordinator, was presented with the Ride Illinois Professional Award for his instrumental role in developing many of the state's most popular bike trails.

Safe Roads Amendment

We've received a lot of questions about the proposed "Safe Roads Amendment" and how it may impact funding for bicycling infrastructure.

The intention of the amendment up for vote this November is to prevent the legislature from sweeping dedicated state transportation dollars into the state's general revenue fund for other uses. But, there is some concern that bicycle infrastructure and safety education campaigns are not explicitly listed in the amendment language.

Ride Illinois investigated the omission and its potential impacts on bicycling. Here's what we know.

Illinois Bike Summit Highlights

The 2016 Illinois Bike Summit has passed, but we're still thinking about one of our most successful summits to date.

We were honored to have had IDOT Secretary Randy Blankenhorn give an inspiring speech about IDOT's new thinking and approach to bicycle planning across the state. He also spoke about IDOT's long range transportation plan, putting ITEP funding on a 2 year cycle, working closely with Ride Illinois, and more.

Teaching Our Newest Drivers

One of Ride Illinois' target audiences for bicycle safety education is our newest generation of motorists. We are actively promoting the use of our BikeSafetyQuiz.com resource in driver education programs around the state so that our youngest drivers have the opportunity to learn how to safely share the road with cyclists. Over 80 schools are currently using the resource, and we recently spoke to approximately 100 driver education instructors in Chicago about the quiz.

Sprinkling And Sixty Degrees In So-Cal

I just got back from a 4 5-mile ride in So-Cal's Inland Empire region, Temecula.

Saren & I moved to Temecula in January of 2015. This past Friday was my first ride since the Summer of 2014. Today was my fifth ride here.

Temecula is high desert, and wine country. There are about 160 wineries nearby, starting about four miles from our front door.

Temecula is also surrounded by the Santa Ana mountain range. There are serious hills here. (Any rider of 1970's-era Schwinn 10-speeds knows that first gear is more like 5th on a hill.)

I feel very much like it's early Spring in the late 1970's in Madison, Wisconsin this week. I was in high school in Madison back then, and we lived on a long, tall hill, way at the top. (Peak of Troy Drive)

All of us kids LIVED for the Summer, when we could ditch the schools, the coats, and the bus, and get on our bikes. I had a mint-condition green 1975 Schwinn Varsity at the time, and I loved that bike. It was stolen in the Summer of 1977, but I never have nor will forget it. (Curse you, Red Baron!)

Now I have the bike I couldn't afford when I bought the Varsity with my paper route money. I am also making it a little further up these hills before I have take a break with each passing day...

But strong communities with safe biking and walking options don't build themselves. They're the direct result of grassroots advocates' concerted efforts to improve streets for people.

This fall, we held a Leadership Retreat to bring together 120 grassroots advocates who are working to make biking and walking better. Watch the video from the Retreat here.

Grassroots advocates find the places that need sidewalks, bike lanes, and crosswalks. They work with members of the community to make sure that the transportation network works for everyone. They hold events -- walks, rides, community planning sessions -- to bring people together. They track transportation laws to make sure that walkers and bikers have a voice in the legislative process.

And the Alliance makes sure that these grassroots advocates have the resources they need to do their jobs well.

BIKE TOUR

June 14 - 19, 2015

Register now for the 13th annual GITAP bike tour! Spots are going fast and over 1/3 of our 225 ridership capacity has already been reserved!

This unforgettable six-day ride will be making a loop through Illinois prairies, farmland, woodlands, river edges, and towns and cities -- Kewanee, Hampton, Galesburg, Canton, and Chilicothe -- with significant history. Enjoy overnights filled with good food and good fellowship, all in support of the League of Illinois Bicyclists, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving bicycling conditions statewide.

Highlights include:

Overnights at campgrounds next to Mississippi and Illinois rivers.

Two nights and layover day in Canton, near many cultural sites and scenic viewpoints.

The opportunity to ride to Lewistown on layover day, and visit the Dickson Mounds Museum, a National Historic Site and major U.S. archaeological museum.

An overnight at Galesburg's Carl Sandburg College on its spacious campus.

A Chillicothe campsite located close to downtown, in a green, open park right next to the Illinois River.

Ride Basics

A loop ride - starting and ending at Kewanee High School - with free parking for the week. Kewanee is also accessible by Amtrak - a great way to arrive car-free!

Many daily mileage choices totaling anywhere from 300 to 500 miles for the week.

Tent camping at county and city parks as well as one college campus.

All breakfasts and dinners included.

Showers and luggage transportation provided.

T-shirt, emergency SAGs, bike repair, and refreshment stops included.

Nightly meetings including our fun Velosophie program - discussions of interesting bicycling-related literature.

Obama Adds Green To Red China and Gets A Shade Of Gray (No, Not One of the 50 Shades You're Thinking Of)

U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping make a pledge to reduce future emissions. This marks the first time China has made a commitment to protect the environment. The goal: the US will cut carbon emissions by 26 to 28 percent, while China will stop its emissions from further growth by 2030.

Reactions to this news have been mixed. Some say it's "historic" and a "breakthrough", some are skeptical that Beijing and Washington can make good on their pledge, and some even say it's simply too little too late.

Regardless of the outcome -- if they fall short of their goals or if the planet goes up in flames anyways -- it is definitely a huge move in a positive direction, and one that should be acknowledged as such.

Paul Krugman may be right on the money when he concludes in a NY Times Op Ed piece that: "The agreement between China and the United States on carbon emissions is, in fact, a big deal."

Krugman goes on to explain the reason it's a "big deal" is because it takes out one of the major lines of defense that have been erected by the Republican party that blockades action that would otherwise help save the planet.

There are three major defensive modes that have been inhibiting movement towards combating climate change: denial -- global warming does not exist and it's all a bunch of hogwash; scare tactics -- actions that cut emissions are bad for the economy because they lead to loss of jobs and impede growth; and, finally, there is nothing America can do as long as China keeps blasting out emissions at an ever increasing rate -- therefore anything we do is futile.

"Needless to say," writes Krugman, "I don't expect the usual suspects to concede that a major part of the anti-environmentalist argument has just collapsed. But it has. This was a good week for the planet."

While the union of Obama and Jinping on combating carbon emissions has, undoubtedly, generated a jolt of optimism the skepticism creeps in when it comes to the numbers. A series of scientific and economic reports have concluded that "in order to avoid the 2-degree temperature rise, the world's largest economies will have to drastically cut carbon emissions within just a few years — a rate far more rapid than what the United States and China have offered."

But, then again, it's better than nothing! And since China and the United States are the two biggest national emitters of carbon, if they can unite in an effort to save the planet than other countries should, hopefully, follow -- or, at the very least, some of the justification for not doing so will be destroyed.

OREGON CLEAN FUELS PROGRAM

Maybe Washington and Beijing Should Look To Oregon...

Much like Massachusetts' healthcare program was used as one of the models for the Affordable Care Act, perhaps Oregon's Clean Fuels Program should be used as a model by Washington in its efforts to clean up the environment and combat rising carbon emissions.

The Oregon Clean Fuel Program was approved in 2009 by Oregon Legislature, and its aim is to reduce Oregon's greenhouse gas pollution by lowering the carbon content of transportation fuel used in the state.

The Clean Fuels Program also "seeks to create economic development opportunities in Oregon, increase the state's energy security and reduce air pollution for healthy communities."

The idea is to lessen Oregon's dependence on Big Oil and level the playing field for local suppliers of clean fuels. The program aims to do so by way of gradually incorporating clean fuels like electricity, biodiesel, natural gas and propane into the transportation systems of the city.

The program offers not only a way to a cleaner environmental future but a brighter economic future by supporting the local economy and creating new jobs.

This is truly a win win situation. And it's a program with well defined goals, that lays out exactly how they aim to achieve said goals -- unlike Obama and Xi's wishy-washy pledge of convenience.

The EPA Invests $3 Million In Green Technology and Innovative Research

Uh...That's No Typo. That's "Million", Not "Billion."

"When we invest in research and innovation, that return on investment builds a healthy economy and a healthy environment for all of us." -- EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy

EPA Administrator, Gina McCarthy, recently announced the EPA's intention to fund nine small businesses with almost $3 million. The businesses to receive the money are located in Calif., Del., Ga., Ill., La., Ohio, N.Y., and Tenn.

The funding from the EPA is expected to aid the innovative businesses in bringing green technologies to the marketplace. During the announcement, McCarthy reiterated the EPA's "commitment to strengthening economic growth, supporting sustainable businesses, and combating the impacts of climate change."

"The small businesses receiving awards today are innovating affordable, energy efficient technologies that are strengthening our economy and building a low-carbon future while bringing a unique vision for addressing complex environmental issues like reducing harmful emissions to create a cleaner environment and enhancing recycling processes," said McCarthy.

The funding is made through the EPA's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program -- a program that has been supporting small businessess and protecting the environment for over 30 years. The program has dished out a whopping $140 million over the last three decades and given 969 awards, allowing numerous small businesses to commericalize their solutions, provide jobs in cutting-edge green technologies that help protect human health and the envirionment.

SBIR past awardees have included John Rich of Nashville-based National Recovery Technologies, LLC., a small business that produced a low cost technology to recycle electronics; and Carol Ann Wedding, president of Imaging Systems Technology, a small business that developed a highly efficient, versatile water purification system, based in Toledo, Ohio.

Adbusters urge consumers to reconsider spending habits on one of the biggest shopping days of the year...

On November 29th Adbusters -- a Vancouver-based advocacy group -- challenges consumers (mainly shop-happy Americans) to go cold turkey for the 24 hours post their Thanksgiving Day binge.

Will this be hard to do? For most people, probably. Consumerism is heavily entrenched in our society and is the backbone of capitalism. Besides, isn't it a good thing that we get insanely good deals at least once a year -- this means less into Walmart's pockets after all.

Adbusters refers to this as a "gigantic psycho-financial-crisis of our times" and argues that this rampant consumerism wrecks havoc on Earth.

The question is then: do people buy what they don't need during Black Friday and more of it, is consumerism drastically catapulted to unnecessary degrees that negatively affect our planet or does it actually, and simply, allow us to get more bang for our buck on things we were planning to purchase anyways?

The Buy Nothing Day campaign is international and continues to gain momentum every year. But, then again, so does the insanity of Black Friday.

So, what side of the fence do you fall on? Will you be standing in that winding-around-the-corner kind of line outside your favorite store energetically participating in Black Friday or will you be cutting up your credit card, mounting a boycott and pledging to Buy Nothing at all on November 28th?

14 Democrats joined 45 Republicans in support of the Keystone KL pipeline that would run the length of America down into Texas. However, in a nail biting vote the bill failed to pass, coming up merely one vote short of the 60 it needed to pass.

Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu gambled with her Senate seat on Tues, 18, when she attempted to push this bill through, which has been dancing around behind the curtains of the Senate for nearly two years.
