The weightings in the revised format will be assigned to entire units as mentioned in the curriculum as an alternative of chapter wise weighting given earlier. There will be a more flexible design or structure of assessment instead of a detailed blue print which used to divide the curriculum into exceedingly narrower parts. The structure of assessment will also be supplemented with a pool of exemplar items in each subject.

The structure of examination along with unit wise weighting for English, Hindi, Sanskrit, Mathematics, Science and Social Science together with pools of exemplar items will be very shortly available. 

In a major decision, finally, a consensus between the government and IITs over entrance exams has resolved on Wednesday evening. The compromise was reached at a meeting of IIT Council, the highest decision-making body having representatives from government and directors of all the institutes 

Further, as proposed earlier, board marks would not be considered for admission into the IITs, NITs etc. 

New selection process will be based on merit as below. This will be implemented from 2013 

The entire process will consists of two exams - main and advanced - to be held on separate days. While the main exam will be conducted by the CBSE, the advanced exam that is likely to take place about a month after the main exam will be conducted by the IITs. The top 1.5 lakh students from the main exam merit list can take the advanced entrance exam. To be eligible for the IIT merit list the score of the advanced test as well as the condition that the aspirant is in the top 20 percentile of his/her board will be taken into account.

"Top 20 per cent students of each state board and advanced exam marks will be qualifying standard for preparing IIT merit list. To get admission into IITs, it's important that students score enough to be in top 20 per cent of their board (state, ICSE or CBSE) and also score well in main exam. 

The compromise formula is in line with the decision of the IIT Joint Admission Board (JAB), comprising directors of IITs, which met in Delhi last Saturday. 

The 15 IITs are in New Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai, Kharagpur, Chennai, Roorkee, Guwahati, Rajasthan, Gandhi Nagar, Patna, Hyderabad, Ropar, Mandi, Bhubaneshwar and Indore.

What is your first reaction when the teacher announces that your next exam will be an open book test? Most students breathe a sigh of relief, because they think they're getting a break. But are they?

In fact, open book tests are not easy tests. Open book tests teach you how to find information when you need it. The questions are designed to teach you how to use your brain. And contrary to popular belief, you do not get off the hook when it comes to studying for an open book exam. You just need to study a little differently.

Open Book Test Questions

Most often, the questions on an open book test will ask you to explain, evaluate, or compare things from your text. For instance:

"Compare and contrast the different views of Gandhi and Subash Chandra Bose."

The answer to this question will not appear in a single paragraph in your text--or even on a single page. The question requires you to have an understanding of two philosophical views that you could only comprehend by reading the entire chapter. 

During your exam, you will not have time to find enough information to answer this question well. Instead, you should know the basic answer to the question and, during the test, look for information from your book that will support your answer.

Preparing for an Open Book Test

• Read the chapters ahead of time. Don't expect to find quick answers during the test.


• Know where to find everything. Observe headings and sub-headings and make your own outline. This reinforces the structure of the text in your mind.


• Mark all important terms with sticky notes and flags. If the teacher allows it, mark your texts wherever you notice important concepts and terms.


• Review lecture notes for themes. Your teacher's lectures usually provide an overview of the themes and concepts that appear on tests. You won't always get this by reviewing the book alone.


• Make your own notes if allowed, and write down important formulas or concepts that you’ve covered in class.

During the Open Book Test

The first thing you need to do is evaluate each question. Ask yourself if each question asks for facts or interpretation.   

The questions that ask you to provide facts may be easier and faster to answer. Those will start with expressions like:


"List five reasons . . .?" 
"What events led up to. . .?"

Some students like to answer these questions first, then go on to the more time-consuming questions that require more thought and concentration.

As you answer each question, you will need to quote the book when appropriate to back up your thoughts. Be careful, though. Only quote three to five words at a time. Otherwise, you will fall into the trap of copying answers from the book--and you'll lose points for that.
  

It seems CBSE is planning to restructure question paper for 10 and 12 CBSE classes. These changes may be in effect from upcoming CBSE Board Exams in 2013.

Questions for Classes 10 and 12 will be reformulated and restructured to encourage students to apply their mind.
