What's the purpose of a lens hood?
In photography, a lens hood or lens shade is a device used on the front end of a lens to block the sun or other light source(s) to prevent glare and lens flare. Lens hoods may also be used to protect the lens from scratches and the elements without having to put on a lens cover.

The Canon RF 35mm f1.8 Macro IS STM (MSRP $499.00) should be in every photographers camera bag who owns a Canon EOS R, RP, R5, R6/Mark II, R3, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100 and any other new/future R-series camera. The image quality is great, lots of great reviews and the price is affordable without breaking the bank but it doesn't come with a lens hood.

Canon offers the EW-52 Lens Hood (MSRP $41.95 - Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK | B&H Photo | Adorama | eBay) as seen above. The EW-52 is a screw-on lens hood and is smaller than your typical round/petal lens hood. I'm not a big fan of screw-on lens hood because if there was strong enough impact, it can damage the lens and its so short that it really doesn't offer that much of a protection. Bigger lens hoods that attach simply slip over the lens, offer more protection to the lens and pop off from accidental impacts.

JJC (Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK) is the only 3rd party manufacturer that offers a lens hood for the RF35mm. It uses a gasket and adapter ring to attach the lens hood and the lens hood is the tulip flower petal type; to remove the adapter ring, it requires a tool. Otherwise, they all offer the same EW-52 screw-on style lens hood. This 3D printed lens hood is like the round (cylindrical) bayonet lens hood we are known to seeing on other lenses with some slight improved modifications:

3D Printed : The 3D printed lens hood is held in place with friction and easy to attach and remove. It can also be reversed for storage.
OEM Lens Hood : Short and lack of protection
3D Printed : With the added length, the interior is flocked to prevent any glare/reflections (easily removable) and there's NO vignetting! Majority of photographers use lens hoods for protection and this 3D printed lens hood offers protection and blocks our flares.

Interior flock material is hand-cut and pre-installed onto lens hood. If you do not want it, you can easily remove it. This 3D printed lens hood has (what we feel is) the perfect snug fit when mounted onto the camera lens. It stays on securely and comes off easily.

Review: JJC KIWIFOTOS KE Series R5 C R6 Extended Eyecup Eyepiece

Overview : KIWIFOTOS KE Series Long Camera Eyecup is specially designed for select cameras. It adds comfort to eyes and reduces the contact from nose to monitor. Made of premium ABS plastic and silicone material, it is soft and durable, allowing more comfortable viewing when camera is held to eye. Simply slide to install, the eyecup mounts to the camera’s viewfinder securely and protects the viewfinder from dust, moisture and scratches. During shooting, it reduces interference by blocking stray light and studio lights from entering the viewfinder. Covering a broader area around the eye than the original’s, the extended eyecup is available to high-bridged nose and greatly enhances your concentration during long shoots. In addition, the use of eyecup doesn’t affect the normal use of the sensor and LCD monitor.

Comes with a screwdriver, convenient for you to detach the original eyecup and then attach KIWIFOTOS long eyecup.

Quality/Usability : Canon use to sell extended eyecups and I even did a mod for when I shot with Nikon but ever since purchasing the JJC Eyecup Extender for the 5D Mark III/IV, I've enjoyed using the extender as my nose no longer touched the screen. With DSLR's, you can easily purchase replacements because they popped off easily and got lost. With Canon all-in on mirrorless cameras, they have now added screws to the eyecups to hold it in place (except for R3). No more losing eyecups but this also means trying to find replacements to be non-existent as they can't get lost easily. Which makes sense but what about if the rubber falls off or gets damaged?

JJC is known for their aftermarket options. Their new KIWIFOTOS KE Series product line offers the option to replace your eyecup but with a longer silicone eyecup. It's not a direct replacement where it's the same size and everything.

In this review, we'll give you a closer look of it on the R5, what comes with it and how it would affect you.

Packaging is really simple. Included you get the extended eyecup, a total of four replacement screws, a screwdriver and instruction manuals.

JJC makes the eyecup for the following cameras:

Unfortunately, there isn't one for the EOS R.

Here is a closer look at the replacement screws in the bag. They are really small so make sure not to lose them.

The instructions tell you how to swap out the eyecups but I think it's pretty straightforward. TIP: When removing the screws, flip the screen to the side to give you more space. Be sure to add a little downward force so as not to strip the screws since they are so small. It will be a pain to try and remove if it did.

Here's a closer look at the extended eyecup. The plastic doesn't feel cheap or thin where it feels like it wants to snap.

The included screwdriver is magnetic so that it can pick up the small screws. Once the two screws are removed, you can remove the OEM eyecup. I put it back inside the KIWIFOTOS box so I know where it is the next time I need to put it back on the camera or you can put it back in the camera box.

Here's a comparison between the OEM eyecup and the aftermarket JJC extended eyecup. As you can see, the plastic piece is about the same thickness but the KIWIFOTOS eyecup is twice the size of the OEM. The KIWIFOTOS also has more of a concave curve to it.

And here's a before and after of the OEM eyecup and the KIWIFOTOS extended eyecup.

You still have easy access to the diopter dial to the right of the viewfinder. Looking through the viewfinder, you still get your 100% view and nothing is obscured. The sensor also works as normal where if it is covered, the viewfinder will be activated.

With the eyecup successfully swapped, my nose is further away from the screen and it does block out light. However, if you wear glasses, blocking out light doesn't do anything since you still have that gap between your eyes and the glasses. As you can see, my nose is further away from the screen when wearing glasses.

Conclusion : Overall, the JJC KIWIFOTOS KE Series R5 C R6 Extended Eyecup Eyepiece is a great replacement alternative if your OEM eyecup is lost or damaged. Its not a direct replacement as it has a larger rubber eyecup but its something if you're in a pinch.

The KIWIFOTOS has a concave curve which is great to block out light for non-glasses wearers which works pretty well. Only benefit for glasses wearers is that your nose is further away from the LCD screen. You also get a full view of your viewfinder.

Due to its larger and flexible eyecup, it may take a little getting use to. If it was like the extender that I had for the 5D Mark III/IV where it was just a piece of plastic extended and allowed you to reuse the original eyecup, I think it would've been better since everyone is use to the OEM eyecup.

Review: Mcoplus Replacement BG-R10 Vertical Battery Grip for Canon R5 C R6 II

Quality/Usability : After 2 years of the R5 and R6 being released, 3rd party aftermarket vertical battery grips of the BG-R10 are finally available. But those who need it, probably either opted to swallow the cost of paying $350 for the OEM grip or have lived without it.

Those who have held out or gotten new cameras now have the option to get a cheaper alternative. Based on what I see, there are different "brands" of the 3rd party grip but based on the looks, they all look the same and most likely come out of the same factory. The only difference is probably the packaging.

The one we're looking at today is from Mcoplus. Some may not know the name but they are a reputable 3rd party company that makes grips, remotes and other camera accessories. We'll give a close look at the Mcoplus replacement BG-R10 grip and a comparison with the OEM BG-R10 grip.

The Mcoplus comes with the battery grip, battery tray and instruction manual. Mcoplus also has an option for a remote control for an additional cost. The grip by itself is $99 and the grip with remote is $105.

The grip itself is made of plastic just like the OEM grip. On the back, you have the same layout as what is found on the OEM grip as well as on the back of the camera. When held in the vertical position, you have the multi-function button, dials, ON/OFF button as well as the shutter button.

On the bottom, you have a 1/4-20 screw thread as well as an area to loop straps through. Battery tray inserts and removes just like the OEM.

The images is a comparison of the OEM grip (top) and the aftermarket grip (bottom). Everything looks identical when it comes to the layout and position. The buttons on the aftermarket grip have more of a tactile/clicky feel to it where as the OEM is quieter.

Quality wise, of course the OEM BG-R10 feels more premium.

On the OEM grip, there is a foam padding around the base of the battery stalk to provide some external weather sealing and the rest is internal similar to what is provided on the cameras themselves. The aftermarket grip lacks this padding.

The battery tray is an example of the quality. The OEM battery tray (top) has a better metal spring. The coiled spring on the aftermarket (bottom) is what you would find for alkaline batteries. It does have some play in it and the release lever is also different.

Here's a more definitive example of quality. The OEM grip weighs more in both the grip and battery tray. Even without weighing each part on a digital scale, you can feel the difference when you're holding both.

Just the battery tray alone, it's a 0.3oz difference and it's all plastic.

With the tray inserted into the grip, the OEM grip weighs almost 3oz heavier. Not sure what is causing the weight difference but I'm guessing it's the internals, weather sealing and quality of plastic?

The battery grip mounts perfectly fine on the camera and works as intended.

One thing that has been popping in the comments of my video below and that is that with the aftermarket grip, the WiFi connection does not work properly. I have tested this and when I try to connect the aftermarket camera to the Canon Connect app on my smartphone, it's like the camera "resets" and doesn't connect.

Conclusion : Overall, the Mcoplus Replacement BG-R10 Vertical Battery Grip for Canon R5 C R6 II is a decent alternative to the OEM grip if you can't afford it or can't justify paying $350 for it. It does what it is suppose to do. The buttons are more clicky than the OEM buttons and to some, it may feel weird.

There is a weight difference whether it be the quality of plastic, internals or weather sealing is lacking.

If you rely on connecting the camera via the Canon Connect app, this grip is not for you as it can not connect during my testing. For that reason and for the weight difference and clicky buttons, I have to drop it 2 stars.

Quality/Usability : Ever since purchasing the RF 70-200 f2.8L, anytime I use this lens, I always use the tripod collar to mount it to my Arca-Swiss ballhead. This evenly distributes the weight and not solely on the camera where it ends up being front heavy.

Not only does it work with the RF 70-200 f2.8L but also the RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1L lens. The plates all come with the same two tools in different size for the different sized screws.

All three plates have a 1/4-20" screw that attaches to the bottom of the tripod collar along with two smaller screws that prevents the plate from sliding off the ballhead. On the bottom of each, there is a pin that inserts itself into the tripod collar to prevent the plate from rotating.

The D065 (what I like to call Medium) and the D060 (I call this Large), both have a Quick Detach (QD) socket hole that allows you to attach a QD style strap. QD system has been used for years by industries around the world including NASA, law enforcement and military agencies. If you don't have a QD strap, you can ignore this.

D060 - If you have the BG-R10, the larger lens plate will not fit as the grip will get in the way. It's fine if the tripod collar is rotated in any other direction other than at the bottom as the grip gets in the way.

It's suggested to get the two smaller sizes if you use the grip often. The issue may be the same with the Canon R3 (unfortunately, I do not have one to confirm) or any future gripped cameras.

Conclusion : Overall, the Hejnar Photo Canon RF 70-200mm 100-500mm Arca Swiss Tripod Lens Plate is a great accessory to own if you mount the lens on a tripod often. This is great for those who do landscape or birding. I prefer the D065 as it fits offers a bit more flexibility when I want to move the camera forward or back and if I use a grip, it does not interfere.

Quality/Usability : I have been a big fan of Hejnar Photo camera plates. They are made of high quality materials, sturdy and reliable. So when I purchased my R5 and R6, I went and looked to see if there were any plates available made specifically for these cameras and indeed they had it available.

Included with the plate are two hex tools. These allow you to tighten and loosen the 1/4-20" screw that attaches to the bottom of your camera and the small stoppage screws when the camera is mounted onto a Arca-swiss ballhead. These small screws prevent the camera from sliding off.

Here's a close-up look of the plate with the screws. There's a Quick Detach (QD) socket hole above the 1/4-20" screw for you to attach a QD style strap. QD system has been used for years by industries around the world including NASA, law enforcement and military agencies. If you don't have a QD strap, you can ignore this. Unfortunately, there is no additional 1/4-20" or 3/8" screw mount to attach additional accessories.

On one end of the plate is a slot to attach a strap, Peak Design Anchor Link, Clutch, SpiderHolster Hand Strap or other accessories.

On the underside, you can see the flat surface but there is a small pin that protrudes. This is where it inserts into the bottom of the camera to prevent the plate from moving.

Here is a close-up of the mounting where the pin meets the bottom of the camera as well as the 1/4-20" screw.

Once the plate is mounted, theres no gaps and the flip out screen opens and closes without any issues.

As mentioned, the plate is Arca-Swiss compatible and will work with any Arca-Swiss ballhead.

Another great thing about the Hejnar Photo D064 plate is that not only does it cover majority of the bottom of the camera, but it doesn't block the access to the battery door.

Conclusion : Overall, the Hejnar Photo Canon R5/R6 Arca Swiss Camera Plate D064 is a nice accessory to have if you have an Arca-Swiss ballhead. The dovetails are perfect that there is no issue attaching the camera to the ballhead. There's no need for rubbing padding to prevent the plate from rotating as it has a pin that inserts into the camera to prevent it from moving.

I love the fact that its almost the full width of the camera allowing you to position your camera however you want on the ballhead as well as having the accessibility to get to your camera.

Review: Clever Supply Co. Dual Leather Camera Harness w/ Peak Design Anchor Links

Quality/Usability : I love my Peak Design Slide Camera Straps. It's my go to strap when I need to carry my camera around. One thing I wish they offered is a dual camera strap option. I've looked at the popular HoldFast Money Maker, RL Handcrafts Clydesdale, BlackRapid, Etsy and even on Amazon. But one thing they all have in common is that they all use metal clasps and/or fastener that attaches to the bottom of the camera.

Since I already use Peak Design products, I'm using their anchor links on my R5 and R6 cameras. Not to mention, all my cameras have a Arca-Swiss plate on the bottom of the camera. So trying to incorporate a fastener on to my existing plates wouldn't be ideal as I would have to remove the fastener in order to mount my camera to the tripod. Depending on the situation, time is of the essence and I have to be quick.

I've seen videos on YouTube where photographers are in the same situation as me where they want a dual camera strap but continue to use the Peak Design anchors whether it's because they're invested in Peak Design products or for the ease of having to connect and disconnect their camera from the strap easily and with one hand. But for them, they had to either "hack" or "modify" the strap in order to integrate the Anchor Links to their strap. I don't have the tools to do so and I'm sure mine would turn into a hack job and not look good at all.

I stumbled upon a company called Clever Supply Co. (they are also on Etsy) that looks to met all my needs despite it costing a bit more than HoldFast; dual camera strap (leather is a bonus for me) and integrated Peak Design Anchor Links. I was looking to purchase the strap but since they are a very small company, they were sold out and weren't taking orders at the time and I was bummed. But out of no where, I got an automated email from them stating that they were opening up orders for a limited time and was taking pre-orders for November 2022 delivery. Talk about perfect timing. I literally jumped at the opportunity so that I can get on their list as my business travels will be picking up in 2023. And who knows when is the next time they will have orders again.

Needless to say, it shipped ahead of schedule and I got it middle of October, a month early! I was able to use it for a work event as well as a business trip. Couldn't have timed it better. But enough of me rambling, on to the strap!

You get the dual leather camera strap ($289.00) which comes in three color options: brown (as shown), black and bourbon (light brown/tan color). I opted for the safety tethers for an additional $20 for that extra security. This brought my total to $309.

Included with the strap are two Anchor mounts to attach to the bottom of your camera and for the Anchor links to attach to, sticker, business card, a total of six (6) or four (4) Anchor Links if you didn't opt for the safety tether, with two being spares and some keyrings depending on the eyelet of your camera. Also included is a canvas pouch to store your camera strap.

The attention to detail is very nice but at the same time, not obtrusive where its blatantly visible. There's an embossed "CLEVER SUPPLY CO." on the back plate and a small logo on the loop that holds the excess strap.

With the excess strap, you have the ability to adjust the strap to fit your body. I didn't have to make any adjustments as it was perfect for me out of the box.

Of all the leather and minimal pieces of the camera strap, the back of the loop is the only stitching you'll find. Some other brands has stitching all long the sides of the strap merging two pieces of leather.

If you look at the edges of the strap, you'll see small pieces of the leather along the underside of the leather. This will clear itself up after a few uses. You'll also notice some of those small pieces of leather will flake/fall off. Again, this will clear itself up after a few uses. Since this is leather, I heard creaks during usage but this is because the leather needed time to work itself to be more flexible.

Unlike other dual leather camera straps that uses a lot of metal buckles, clasps and mounting points, the Clever Supply strap only has two buckles. There are two oval rings that is used mount the small strap that allows your camera to slide up and down the strap but they don't make any sound when in use and is not noticeable.

What really sold me on the strap was the Peak Design integration! As you can see, the rivets hold the strap together. They can not come off nor can you swap out hardware unless you cut the leather. The rivets look clean on both sides.

As mentioned in the beginning, I opted for the safety tethers that latches to the hole on the strap. The Anchor Links are capable of holding up to 200 lbs. which no one would be carrying that much gear but I just wanted that peace of mind and extra precaution. One mistake and down goes your camera and lens hitting the ground. Even with the Peak Design Slide Strap, it has two points of contact which is the top left and bottom of the camera.

The strap comes with shoulder pads made of leather. These do slide forward or back depending how you have the strap situated. I've worn the Dual Anchor Camera Harness strap for 3 days straight, 8-10 hours/day and the strap was comfortable. I did have to adjust the shoulder strap a few times because it does move around a little when you're lifting a camera on one side and the other side is pull down due to gravity. Not a big issue as it was still comfortable.

Here's a look with cameras and lenses attached to the Clever Supply Dual Harness. I've used the strap with my Canon R5 and R6 camera bodies with a combination of RF 15-35 f2.8L, RF 24-70 f2.8L, RF 28-70 f2L and RF 70-200 f2.8L.

Here is a picture of me with the strap on along with Canon R6 with RF 15-35 on my left and R5 with RF 28-70 f2 on my right. I'm 5'9" and I didn't have to adjust the strap as it was the perfect length to grab my gear. The camera was right at my hands and I didn't have to reach lower or higher to get it.

Conclusion : Overall, the Clever Supply Co. Dual Leather Anchor Camera Harness was the perfect choice for me where I didn't have to hack an existing dual camera strap in order to incorporate Peak Design Anchors. This was right out of the box and although this cost more than other more popular straps, the fact that what I wanted was integrated, it was well worth the slightly higher premium.

Another thing that Clever Supply prides itself on is that its lighter and quieter compared to its competitors because it doesn't have all that metal hardware on the leather straps.

Regardless of what gear combination I used, the strap felt very comfortable. Grabbing camera gear was natural and quick. The only thing I disliked was that if you have the safety tether and you're walking around a lot with your camera by your side, the safety tether has a tendency to wrap itself because the Anchor Links has spun around and you would have to untwist due to the bouncing off the side of your leg. If you just had the one point of contact, it wouldn't be an issue. Same would be for another strap that uses a tether and single point of contact at the bottom of the camera.

Quality/Usability : The Manfrotto Pro Light Reloader Tough-55 Hard Case has been working well with transporting my camera gear. However, if I wanted to carry laptop, I would have to carry a separate backpack or carry case.

In comes the Manfrotto Pro Light Tough Laptop Sleeve. As you can tell already by the description, this allows you to attach the laptop bag to the hard case for easy transport.

On the front, you have a pocket up on top and bottom to store your cables and accessories. There are four plastic strap loops which I will discuss further. Behind these pockets is another pocket with a side zip that opens up to a compartment to insert your laptop and papers.

The back has a total of four straps (left side shows them overlapping in tucked mode; right shows them taken out). These straps are what will allow you to attach the laptop bag to the hard case.

Per Manfrotto, the laptop bag holds 15" laptops. However, I'm sure this info was before Apple released their 2021 M1 Macbook Pro laptops. So if you have the 2021 M1 Pro/Max 16" MBP, I'm happy to report that the laptop fits into the bag with no problem.

Top pocket is a single pocket. You can throw in cables, memory cards, business cards, pen and other items that you would probably need quick access to.

The bottom pocket has two smaller divided pockets if you wanted to separate your items whether it be fresh and depleted batteries, specific cables, memory cards, portable harddrives and other miscellaneous items.

A shoulder strap is included with the bag that clips to the back of the bag. Nothing extravagant with the strap. There's no padding on the strap but its wide enough to offer some support.

Above is the order of how to attach the laptop bag onto the Tough-55 hard case. The process is similar to that of the tripod bag.

Once it's attached to the hard case, it's securely on. You can now transport your laptops securely to your next location or job while freeing up your shoulder and back. And since everything is together, less chance of having to misplace stuff.

Even with the laptop bag mounted onto the hard case, you can still utilize the case and gain access to the contents inside the Tough-55 without having to take the laptop bag off. Due note that if you have the lid open with a laptop inside the bag and there is nothing inside the case to weigh it down, this may cause your case to tip over. So it's best to make sure it's leaning against a wall or something to keep it propped up.

Conclusion : Overall, the Manfrotto Pro Light Tough Laptop Sleeve for Manfrotto Tough Hard Cases is a basic and minimal laptop bag. There aren't too many pockets; just enough to hold essentials and whatever small items you need to take with you. I like that you can either attach it to the Manfrotto hard case or use it as a standalone laptop bag with the included shoulder strap.

Setup is quick and easy. Accessing pockets and laptops are easy as well. Not sure what else I would add to it. It's not too bulky where it sticks out but enough to protect your laptop.

I'm also glad that it holds the new 2021 M1 Macbook Pro without any issues.

Quality/Usability : I've always either hand carried my tripod or placed it on the side pocket of my Peak Design backpack. This is great but it can get a little heavy and it just sticks out too much.

I stumbled upon Manfrotto Tough 55 product line and saw that they had this tripod bag. I looked well padded, easy to carry and it worked with their Tough 55 hard case.

There's not much to the bag. On the front is a grab handle which makes carrying very comfortable. On the front is also a latch system to keep the flap folded. On the back are two D-loops at the top and bottom to attach the included shoulder strap.

As mentioned above, there is a little latch system that keeps the flap closed. All you have to do is slide the buckle apart. This all depends on how tall your tripod is and will keep the bag in a smaller form factor.

With the buckle slid apart, this makes the tripod bag even longer and reveals the zipper. This allows you to access the main tripod compartment to insert your tripod.

There are no interior or exterior pockets. It would have been nice if they included one to hold tools, camera plates or other smaller items.

My Manfrotto 055XPROB03 tripod with a standard Arca Swiss ballhead fit perfect. I did have to rotate the ballhead slightly so that its tucked and not protruding in an awkward position.

If you own a Manfrotto fluid head or any fluid head, I'm sorry to say that this case will not be able to be zipped closed due to the bigger size.

As stated, the tripod bag includes a shoulder strap. It's nicely padded and actually feels comfortable. As stated, there are no external or interior pockets. So if you're not using the shoulder strap, you have no place to put it.

I just love the fact that I can carry my tripod on my back and be hands free.

I own the Manfrotto Tough 55 hard case and the tripod bag paired very nicely together. I can haul my tripod and my gear together. I don't have to use one hand to pull the case and the other to hold the tripod or have it on my shoulder. I can have everything together as if it was one.

Here is what it looks like with the tripod mounted attached to the Tough 55 hard case. As you can see, I can easily haul the case and tripod with easy and with one hand. This allows my hand and body to move around freely if needed.

Conclusion : Overall, the Manfrotto PRO Light Tough Tripod Bag for Manfrotto Pro Light Reloader Tough Hard Cases is a must have if you carry your tripod around. Not only does it protect your tripod but it also makes it easier to carry around.

I just wish there was a small pocket to hold small items or even just the shoulder strap when its not being used.
