Before purchasing this product, I searched and searched everywhere for other laptops. I'm not too technical when it comes to computers. To me, a computer is a computer. However, as a college student, I do want something that runs fast and smooth yet inexpensive. So my super old laptop broke, when I mean old, I mean Windows XP old. I went on the hunt for a new laptop. I know there are better ones out there, but I do recommend this laptop if you're looking for something that is not expensive and runs VERY smooth and fast!

If you're on a budget, this laptop will work for you. It's not expensive and it has a lot of amazing cool features that will satisfy all your entertainment needs. Videos on Hulu and/or Netflix work well. I haven't had a problem yet. Games also run smoothly.

Webcam is pretty amazing too. Useful for pics, and Skype.

Sounds is okay. Not too fancy like I expected. But it's good quality.

Um, good for school as well.

In the end, I do recommend. Funny thing, my sister bought one after I did and she loves it too.

This is not my first Mac computer, and certainly will not be my last. Before I begin, I will say that I am not like a good percentage of the people that will end up writing a review on this computer - I am not an Apple fanboy. I have owned many PC computers as well, and like them too. I currently own a Lenovo laptop as well as my new MacBook Pro, and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

To start with the strengths:
1. OSX Lion is a great performer..extremely fast and reliable. I have it installed on my iMac desktop computer as well and love it. Not to mention this comes with a free upgrade to Mountain Lion, which is very nice.
2. Screen looks great. Even though it is not the Retina display you can get on the 15.4 inch model, the screen is fantastic. Very bright and crystal clear with excellent color.
3. Quietest laptop I have ever owned. Keeps quiet even when the computer is under a heavy load.
4. First computer I have owned with USB 3.0. I bought an external hard drive when I purchased this laptop as well so I could utilize the USB 3.0. I got the hard drive yesterday and transferred all of my files from my old laptop to the new hard drive so I could put them on my MacBook. It took about 1/5th of the time it did with USB 2.0.
5. My Lenovo laptop does not have an illuminated keyboard, so the keyboard on this laptop is a big plus in my opinion. Excellent for people that like to work or surf the web while their significant other is sleeping.
6. The trackpad - can't even compare it to any trackpad I have seen on any other laptop computer.
7. Excellent battery life while being a very fast performer. It definitely has the best of both worlds. I average about 6 hours on a charge. My Lenovo (with similar graphics, processor, etc. and same use) only lasts about 4 or 5 hours on a full charge.
8. Typical Apple simplistic styling. I love the look of the Apple products. Simple and clean.
9. Many, many more...but those are the most notable ones to me.

Now, for the weaknesses.
1. The only thing I dislike about this laptop are the rubber pads found on the bottom of the computer for grip. They may get softer and more sticky as time goes by, but right now they are far from that. The pads on the bottom of my Lenovo are definitely much better and don't allow the computer to slide around while I am using the computer on a glass topped desk.
2. Price - it's a bit pricey for the performance you get, but the added perks of Mac OSX and the durability and support of Apple products makes up for it. For the same price, you can get a PC with more memory, larger hard drive, better graphics, and a faster processor, but then you remember you're running Windows 7, which isn't nearly as well built as Mac OSX.

In conclusion - this is a great laptop. Although it is a little pricey, it is well worth the extra money. So far, the only issue I have with it (rubber pads) is a very small problem that does not change how this laptop performs in any way.

If you are thinking about getting a MacBook Pro laptop but do not want to spend a huge amount of money for one, this is definitely the way to go. It may be considered the "base model" MacBook Pro, but it still an excellent computer. The size and battery life of this computer makes it excellent for people that need a laptop that is very mobile. So I have been searching for a nice mid-grade ultrabook for a while, and I happened to see this exact model at my local Fry's Electronics store (price was $899). Amazon's price was $799, and strangely Wal-Mart had it for $766, but after adding nearly 10% Arizona sales tax at Wal-Mart, it turned out that Amazon was cheapest since Amazon doesn't charge tax. Even better, all of the local stores were out of stock and I would have needed to wait several days to order a new one (or I could take the display model....yeah, right). Amazon charged me like $9 for SAME DAY delivery.

Anyway, I loved the ultra-thin look of this machine but I think it's possible the unit might be TOO thin (i.e. flimsy). I was very concerned about the other user reviews saying that the screen cracked during normal use and that Toshiba was refusing to honor their warranty. This was ALMOST enough to deter me from making the purchase...but then I did a little research that made me feel a lot better for two reasons.

First, if you're worried about breaking the screen, Amazon sells a 2-year protection package for $99 that will cover physical damage like this. Of course the screen should never break during normal use, but if you're paranoid about it then $99 seems like a small price for that extra peace of mind.

Second, I did some searching and found that you can buy a replacement screen for this laptop for MUCH less than you might think -- currently around $75. As it happens my wife broke the screen on her Acer netbook a few years ago, and I was shocked to find that a new screen was only about $45 and replacing it was actually very easy...just remove a few screws and plug the new unit in. People shouldn't be intimidated by this kind of thing...it's not brain surgery!

So, armed with this information I decided that it was worth the risk to buy this ultra-thin ultrabook even though there's a chance the screen might not last that long. If it breaks, then I know I can fix it for about $75, and if it doesn't break, then that's even better.

Having said all this -- if the screen cracks during normal use my first call will be to Toshiba. Because I'm an attorney, they are going to have to push back extremely hard for me to accept that the warranty doesn't apply. Toshiba Portege Z835-P360 Review By David G.- [Read Original Review here]

I took a long time when deciding which laptop to go with and am VERY VERY happy with my decision. Originally I was going to go with the Sony Vaio, which is by no means a bad computer. After talking to some friends 3/4 suggested the acer over the Vaio because of the screen size and quality. I don't think I know anybody who's had real issues besides the battery with an Acer Aspire. I love the keyboard and the mouse could use some improvement, but no complaints since I have a USB one anyways. When I bought mine Amazon had no product description to speak of. Now they have a full feature benefit listing from Asus. However the model featured is DS72. While the spec list is identical to the ES72, you never know what is different but i think it's black VS silver shell. I have purchased 4 of these over the last month and can confirm Amazon ships the ES72 model.

This review is for the N53SM-ES72 (not ES71). The difference is the ES71 comes with a 500GB drive while the ES72 has the 750GB drive. I also beleive the ES71 has been name changed to DS71. If you are not confused yet Asus will make sure you are soon. For those complaining of no BluRay the N53SM has that option for more dollars. RS72, (N53SM-RS72), would be one model with BluRay for around 200$ more. Also pay attention as the N53SM comes in many-many variations. If you go to the Asus site (Asus global not USA), and search for N53SM you will find all the different ways it can be built.

It's important to note the Intel i7-2670QM supports 16GB RAM but not all configurations will have all 4 ram slots. For example the Asus N55 series uses the Intel i7-2670QM but only has 2 slots for a max of 8GB RAM. Other manufactures do this too. I just wanted to caution those thinking if it has the Intel 2670QM that you would automatically have 4 ram slots. That is what makes this N53SM such a great value.

Before I powered it on I installed 16GB 1600MHz matched ram. I ditched the 4 GB stick and 2 GB stick of Hynix ram. Technically you could just add 2 4GB sticks in the empty slots for a total of 14 GB but that would give you a mixed set and not really ideal. Since RAM is pretty cheap these days you can add 16GB matched set for under 90 dollars. I remember just a couple years ago when this much RAM would set you back 1,500$.

Asus builds a pretty good product. The hardware is impressive while the design and execution is sexy, functional and economical. Now comes the cost savings. More plasticky then I would have liked. Plastic frame adds to weight but keeps cost down I'm sure. With edge to edge screens now and small components would have liked to see a more compact architecture. It feels like it should be a 17 inch laptop. Keyboard is adequate, (non lighted), and mouse pad not as slick as my Asus 13 inch model. Weight is on the higher end of the spectrum for this size laptop, 6.4 lbs by itself and over 8 lbs with ac adapter. It can get very tiring if you have it actually sitting in your lap on a couch. Also don't plan on lugging this brick all over campus unless you have arms of steel, speaking of which the power brick is almost the same size as the laptop (huge!--which you will need to carry with you at all times as you wont get more than 3 hours of unplugged life from the battery. Heat management is good, the top and bottom don't get overly hot after long usage. Sound is what you would expect from a company like B&O which is simply amazing for a laptop. However, don't expect this to scream like a 600 watt B&O system. I see some reviewers say it's not loud enough. Remember this is a laptop with two 1 inch speakers. The sound is deep, clear and well balanced for a 15.6 inch laptop.

I look at my purchase as an investment in longevity. The Asus N53SM replaced 2 year old Alienware M17 that set me back 4 grand and didn't even come close to these specs. The Asus N53SM with i7 quad core and 16GB ram was less than a grand. My intended use is photo and video editing. I expect the hardware to be suitable for the long run as more advanced graphic, ram and processor hungry apps hit the market. For high end gaming I think it definitely kicks for a middle of the road GPU and even though Asus doesn't allow upgradable graphic cards like alienware and other models, you save hundreds even thousands over those models.ASUS N53SM-ES72 Review By none- [Read Original Review here]

UPDATE on November 24, 2011. This is a relatively new laptop from Toshiba, without any reviews posted before mine, so I wrote what follows to try to supply some information to people who were trying to decide whether to take advantage of a one-day Amazon special. That special is now over, and this computer is currently listed for its regular Amazon price, which is about $150 more than it was on November 23rd. With the large number of sales of this model recorded yesterday, hopefully reviewers with hands-on experiences to share should show up in a while.

[Original review follows:] I am writing this review on a day [November 23, 2011] that this laptop is an Amazon featured special, and at its special price I think it is definitely worth considering. Since there are no hands-on reviews to consider and you only have today to decide on the special price, I suggest that you compare this model with the very popular Toshiba R835-P56x, which is also available on Amazon and has lots of reviews. I will summarize the comparability of these two laptops in a moment, but suffice it to say that they are in the same ballpark regarding features and performance. For today, at least, the R845-S85 is being offered at a significantly lower price.

The R845-S85 has a slightly larger screen (14 inch versus 13.3 inch), a similar Intel Core i5 processor (Core i5-2430M versus Core i5-2410M), has 6GB of RAM (versus 4GB), similar integrated graphics, same hard drive (640GB), similar ports, same optical drive, the same Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit operating system, and features a claimed 10 hour battery life (versus 8 hours). One potentially important disadvantage compared to the R835-P56x is that the R845-S85 weighs 4.2 pounds, versus 3.2 pounds. The more you carry around your laptop, perhaps the more this difference will be meaningful to you.

Simply put, there is no such thing as a laptop with the longest battery life, most powerful processor and graphics capabilities, strongest construction and lowest price. You need to decide which features are most important to you and then narrow your selection accordingly. If what you want is a model with good processing capability, relatively light weight, good battery performance and an optical drive--all at a very good price--then this R845-S85 model is well worth your consideration.

Full disclosure: I own the Toshiba R835-P70, which is the R835-P56x (that I used as the comparison above) with Wi-Max capability added. I have had no problems with it, and for my use (mostly business) its combination of features make it the best laptop I have owned.

One more thing: There is an interesting suggestion for an external laptop speaker buried in the comments section (I think it's about the 16th comment). I ordered this laptop after I cracked the screen on my other HP. I am absolutely in love with it. Has Windows 7, has HDMI and VGA outputs so I can connect my laptop to the TV. Keyboard is awesome, keys do not stick and they are space perfectly apart. Scroll pad is awesome as well, doesn't lag and moves as fast as my finger does. Great graphics, I am not a gamer or anything, I use this for my homework, and it exceeds every requirement I have. LOUD speakers. Comes with SRS speakers, crystal clear sound! Battery life is excellent, considering my old laptop would only last about 30 minutes unplugged. This one last about 4 hours. VERY FAST delivery, got it in two days. Never runs hot, and starts up soooo fast. Set up was super easy as well. I would recommend this laptop to any college student. So, this laptop is low priced, but high powered, at least for what I need it to do. I am pretty much like everyone else and just browse the web and check email on this thing and it does the job just fine for that. It is quick and clippy and I absolutely love having a number key pad. My only complaint about this is that it does not have a USB port on the right hand side of the laptop. Why is this important you ask? Mouse. I have a small travel mouse that I usually use with my laptops and with this one, it has to be plugged all the way on the other side of the laptop. It's kind of inconvenient, but not a deal breaker with me.

This would be a great laptop for a kid going off to college or any casual user to just have around the house.

BE WARNED: as with most new laptops these days, this one does not come with installation DVD's. That means that if you get a virus or something, you will not have a way to reinstall Windows. It does however have a method for MAKING a backup. I highly recommend that you do this IMMEDIATELY before using the laptop. When I did it, it required 5 (yes five) blank DVD's, so make sure that you have some on hand. If you skip this step, you will rue the day down the road. The fun part is that the printed instructions are pretty stupid and look to be generic for all Toshiba laptops. To make the backup do the following:

Click Start -> All Programs -> TOSHIBA -> Support & Recovery -> Recovery Media Creator

and follow the instructions from there. Let me start with the good:
So awesome. Great OS, fabulous improvements to the existing line bumping up the processor speed and adding the thunderbolt port. This is my second MacBook. The first one I had was a 2006 model, not the Pro. I fell in love with it. This one has had the same effect. I had upgraded my old MacBook to Lion, so I kind of knew what I was getting, but hadn't been able to enjoy some of the awesome new multi-touch features. The improvements to the OS have been relatively gradual, but substantive. The feel of this machine compared to the old MacBook is far superior. The Unibody construction is solid, sleek and beautiful. It is everything I'd hoped it would be from a look and feel standpoint, but somehow a bit more sturdy.

For the not so good, I got the stock screen - which is VERY glossy. I mean ... REALLY glossy. It's still beautiful and has better color reproduction than I could ever expect from a notebook. The reflectiveness of the display is only a minor inconvenience if you work in a controlled-lighting environment like me (I prefer it dark) or if you can crank up the brightness.

My real problem with it? The statement of 7 hour battery life is not just mere exaggeration -- it's a lie. I challenge anyone to show proof that through anywhere near normal use can get more than 2.5 hrs out of it. I've got the brightness all the way down to just one notch above 'off' and the keyboard backlight off. The first full charge of this battery got me only about 2 full hours. Enabling the battery timer is useless. The "Time remaining" goes from 4 hours plus to less than 2 hours over the span of about 10 minutes. It's a joke. It's so bad that I'm thinking I only got half a battery or something.

I have an extended battery on a Dell notebook that gives me 7.5 hrs of regular use, and had an extra "slice" battery that attached to a Compaq elitebook that gave me 7-8 hrs. I know what 7 hrs of battery looks like. This ain't it.

My only other complaint is that it gets really hot. There's a reason they aren't called laptops. :-)

If you buy this - don't go into it expecting 7 hrs of battery life, and you'll be perfectly satisfied.

All that being said, I think I'm done buying Windows PCs.

With the help of some responders to my original review, I am seeing much better results from the battery - close to 5 hrs + of normal use. I rarely write reviews, but after using this for a week I feel I have to. I've been using computers since 1982 (VIC 20) and building my own since 1990, so I think I'm qualified to write this. I thought long and hard before buying this computer. I'm disabled now and moving around the house is hard, so I needed a laptop that would allow me to work at my computer easily. I've always used Microsoft, but I've become increasingly upset with cost of upgrades, ease of use, etc. & don't like the feel of Windows 8 so decided to look at a Mac for the first time. The keyboard on the Air is the best on a laptop I've ever used & better than many regular keyboards I've had, there was a learning curve with the operating system, about 4 hours, but I MUCH prefer it to Windows. Easy to find a program with Launchpad, no windows covering the screen, easy to swipe between open programs & the Trackpad, once you're used to it, actually works better than a mouse in most circumstances. The App store provides fast, easy access to literally hundreds of low priced apps that work smoothly, making it easy to find a program to do tasks that OS doesn't work for.

In conclusion, If you want a computer for regular use, email, light photo editing, light gaming, web access I don't think you'll find a better buy. Plus the great screen - I've heard they will have a higher def screen with the new Mac Book AIr, but this is better than most screens I've ever seen and I couldn't ask for more. I never imagined that such a light, beautifully designed, ergonomic machine could be priced so low. Sure it's more expensive than a Windows laptop, but from the moment you unpack this you know it's a quality machine.

Yes they're bringing out a new model, but the specs on the machine mean that, unless you're a heavy gamer, this will be able to meet your computing needs for many years to come. The default install has plenty of bloatware, so I installed a blank install using the product key on the bottom of the laptop.The Asus-branded software offered is hardly bloatware. I have seen so many articles and comments comparing Kindle Fire Full Color 7" Multi-touch Display to the iPad, and surveys where people are asked if they will be buying a Kindle Fire over an iPad this Christmas. The main purpose of this device is to deliver Amazon content to you more effectively. Amazon reviews shouldn't focus on price, but it is hard not to with this device. FORM FACTOR - The Kindle Fire feels almost the same in my hand as my 3rd generation Kindle but it is a bit heavier. The Fire doesn't come with an SD card slot, with good reason. As mentioned, Amazon wants you to get content directly from them. The Fire comes with 8Gb of storage, which is enough to hold about 8 downloaded movies, 80 apps, 800 songs, or 6,000 books. Books won't take up much room, but magazines are around 250Mb and movies are a little under 1 Gb. Free videos available through Amazon Prime cannot be downloaded, only streamed.

AMAZON CLOUD - If you have not tried out the Amazon Cloud Drive, you will be pleasantly surprised. This combines very nicely with the Fire. If you are the type of person who reads a lot and expect to spend at least 50% of your use on reading books, I don't think you will be satisfied with the Fire over your Kindle 3 or the Kindle Touch, Wi-Fi, 6" E Ink Display - includes Special Offers & Sponsored Screensavers. The Kindle Fire is difficult to read in bright sunlight or on the beach. Additionally, the Fire doesn't support real page numbers, even though the Touch does.

MAGAZINES - The Kindle Fire can also handle magazines, however the display is just too small to be an enjoyable reading experience. The Fire handles magazines two ways: with Page View, which shows the original magazine display, and with Text View, which attempts to just provide the text of the article. I found magazines like that unreadable on the 7" display. COMIC READER - This is one of the main reasons I purchased the Fire. Amazon has a fairly extensive collection of comic books available for the Fire, including an exclusive deal with DC to publish many of their books. In addition to a proprietary comic reader that comes on the Fire, Amazon also has a Comics by ComiXology app available to purchase issues and subscriptions through.

The new Apple MacBook Pro MD318LL/A have several major new features: Intel Core i7 Processors with Turbo Boost Technology, Thunderbolt the next generation of I/O, new AMD Radeon Graphics, and FaceTime HD camera. Great OS, fabulous improvements to the existing line bumping up the processor speed and adding the thunderbolt port. The feel of this machine compared to the old MacBook is far superior. The Unibody construction is solid, sleek and beautiful. The reflectiveness of the display is only a minor inconvenience if you work in a controlled-lighting environment like me (I prefer it dark) or if you can crank up the brightness. The statement of 7 hour battery life is not just mere exaggeration -- it's a lie. Enabling the battery timer is useless.

I have an extended battery on a Dell notebook that gives me 7.5 hrs of regular use, and had an extra "slice" battery that attached to a Compaq elitebook that gave me 7-8 hrs. I know what 7 hrs of battery looks like. There's a reason they aren't called laptops. :-). If you buy this - don't go into it expecting 7 hrs of battery life, and you'll be perfectly satisfied. Leaving the original text of the review intact, but updating the rating to the 5 stars the product deserves. I'm extremely satisfied. Very happy Mac owner.
