How public education cripples our kids, and why

I taught for thirty years in some of the worst schools in Manhattan, and in some of the best, and during that time I became an expert in boredom. Boredom was everywhere in my world, and if you asked the kids, as I often did, why they felt so bored, they always gave the same answers: They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around. They said teachers didn't seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren't interested in learning more. And the kids were right: their teachers were every bit as bored as they were.

Boredom is the common condition of schoolteachers, and anyone who has spent time in a teachers' lounge can vouch for the low energy, the whining, the dispirited attitudes, to be found there. When asked why they feel bored, the teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect. Who wouldn't get bored teaching students who are rude and interested only in grades? If even that. Of course, teachers are themselves products of the same twelve-year compulsory school programs that so thoroughly bore their students, and as school personnel they are trapped inside structures even more rigid than those imposed upon the children. Who, then, is to blame?

We all are. My grandfather taught me that. One afternoon when I was seven I complained to him of boredom, and he batted me hard on the head. He told me that I was never to use that term in his presence again, that if I was bored it was my fault and no one else's. The obligation to amuse and instruct myself was entirely my own, and people who didn't know that were childish people, to be avoided if possible. Certainly not to be trusted. That episode cured me of boredom forever, and here and there over the years I was able to pass on the lesson to some remarkable student. For the most part, however, I found it futile to challenge the official notion that boredom and childishness were the natural state of affairs in the classroom. Often I had to defy custom, and even bend the law, to help kids break out of this trap.

The empire struck back, of course; childish adults regularly conflate opposition with disloyalty. I once returned from a medical leave to discover that all evidence of my having been granted the leave had been purposely destroyed, that my job had been terminated, and that I no longer possessed even a teaching license. After nine months of tormented effort I was able to retrieve the license when a school secretary testified to witnessing the plot unfold. In the meantime my family suffered more than I care to remember. By the time I finally retired in 1991, I had more than enough reason to think of our schools - with their long-term, cell-block-style, forced confinement of both students and teachers - as virtual factories of childishness. Yet I honestly could not see why they had to be that way. My own experience had revealed to me what many other teachers must learn along the way, too, yet keep to themselves for fear of reprisal: if we wanted to we could easily and inexpensively jettison the old, stupid structures and help kids take an education rather than merely receive a schooling. We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness - curiosity, adventure, resilience, the capacity for surprising insight - simply by being more flexible about time, texts, and tests, by introducing kids to truly competent adults, and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then.

But we don't do that. And the more I asked why not, and persisted in thinking about the "problem" of schooling as an engineer might, the more I missed the point: What if there is no "problem" with our schools? What if they are the way they are, so expensively flying in the face of common sense and long experience in how children learn things, not because they are doing something wrong but because they are doing something right? Is it possible that George W. Bush accidentally spoke the truth when he said we would "leave no child behind"? Could it be that our schools are designed to make sure not one of them ever really grows up?

A distance education degree is a great way for a student or person in the job force to expand his education or achieve a first time education without taking the time to attend classes on a college campus.

These types of educational opportunities offer a wide variety of choices and experiences for students, such as a long list of program paths, levels of educational goals (certificates, Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's, and even Doctorates), and length of time to finish the distance education degrees program.

However, receiving an education through the Internet requires more concentration, discipline, and organizational skills than with attending traditional schools. This discipline is essential because the student is actually "running his own school" at home. A distance education degree offers the great flexibility of being able to work a day job, take care of the kids, and go to school at the same time.

The last thing a school wants is their dropout rate to increase, and the last thing a student wants is to waste money on a course path that he doesn't complete, so the prospective student should carefully examine the problems inherent in choosing this option. Many schools will help their students organize their classes to achieve the goal of completion.

These school counselors want to see students succeed and recognize the particular problems in working through the Internet. Keep in mind that some distance education degrees may require some on-site class time. Internships, lab classes, or other hands-on learning may require the student to attend a few traditional classes. Students should research as many distance education degrees as possible to find one that will suit all their needs.

Your future is really up to you, sure some things are just totally out of your control and at times there is absolutely nothing that you can do to change your current situation, whatever it might be. Education itself is extremely important and most of us are taught that from a very young age and we continue knowing that throughout life. We are very fortunate individuals, blessed with so many amazing opportunities but one thing that you do need to remember is to never, under any circumstances, take life for granted. You could have it all one day and then the next it could all just disappear right before your eyes, before you even realize what is happening. I know that sounds very depressing but I am just wanting to express to you just how important currency education really is. Every parent wants their child to develop positive character
traits. One way to supplement your child's character
education is to act as a filter for the movies and
television shows your child watches, and to review the books
your child reads.

The following categories are
modeled after "The Book of Virtues for Young People," an
excellent book for children in its own right, written by
William Bennett. When developing a curriculum of character
education for your child, it's helpful to review each
children's book, television show, and movie for both
positive and negative examples of each of the ten virtues
outlined in "The Book of Virtues for Young People." The
stronger the message, the more it will contribute to your
child's character education.

Following are some ways
in which the virtues can manifest as character traits in
children's books, movies, and in television
shows:

Self-Discipline: A character discusses his
feelings of anger rather than impulsively striking out. Or,
a character gets his chores done before he goes out to play.

Compassion: A character understands the pain or
suffering of a friend, and steps in to help, even when it
means she can't attend the party she was looking forward to.

Responsibility: A character admits it was his
baseball that broke the window, and offers to pay for a
replacement. Or, a character keeps her promise to babysit
her younger sister, even though she'd rather go to the
movies with her friends.

Friendship: A character
stands up for her friend in front of her peers, even though
it's not popular. Or, a character befriends the class bully
in an effort to get him to change his ways.

Work: A
character approaches her job with a positive attitude, and
does her very best even when her boss is being unfair. Or, a
character makes up a game to get through an unpleasant task,
and takes pride in her work even though it goes unnoticed.

Courage: A character is afraid of the raging waters,
but takes the risk and dives in to save her family. Or, a
character stands up for what he believes in, even though
it's unpopular.

Perseverance: A character continues
to strive to make the basketball team, even though he's a
foot shorter than the other players. Or, a family works
together to keep their home, even though the father has lost
his job and the mother is ill.

Honesty: A character
admits to himself that he isn't trying his hardest. Or, a
character talks to an adult about a friend in trouble, even
though the friend will get angry at her.

Loyalty: A
character sticks with his losing soccer team in the hope of
helping them become better, rather than joining a winning
soccer team. Or, a character stays at her friend's side
during a serious illness or hardship.

Faith: A
character reaches out to God to help him in his time of
need.

When evaluating character traits and virtues
in kids' books, movies, and television shows, also look at
negative behavioral influences. Ideally, these influences
will be minimal. Consider, for example:

Violence:
Does the character hurt himself, another person, or an
animal through his words or actions, and does he act without
remorse?

Profanity: Does the character use foul
language, sexual language, or take God's name in vain?

Nudity: Does the movie, television show, or book
show or describe suggestive styles of dress or partially
clothed or nude characters?

Sexual Content: Do the
characters engage in implied or overt sexual behavior, or do
they engage in aberrant sexual behavior?

Drugs,
Alcohol, and Tobacco: Do the characters use or abuse legal
or illegal substances?

Scary Elements: Are the
scenarios depicted gratuitously frightening?

Negative Behaviors: Does the character show
disrespect to his parents? Or, does he neglect his homework?
Or, does he frighten other children?

By evaluating
both the positive character traits and negative behaviors of
movies, television shows, and books, and selecting those
that reinforce the values and virtues that are important to
you, you'll go far in developing your child's character
education.

Learning opportunities abound in New York City. These opportunities are not all in boring atmospheres or hallowed halls of learning but in interactive experiences that are widely available to young and old alike in many brightly lit and fun to explore corners of this great city. We are never too old for learning and we can never have too much fun. Whether you are young, have youngsters of your own, or are simply young at heart, New York City has a lot of entertaining ways to educate you.

Perhaps one of the neatest things to do in New York City is to pay a visit to the FDNY Fire Zone. General admission is free but if you wish to experience a Fire-Simulation presentation there are nominal fees involved (currently under $5 per person). The Fire Zone is a state of the art facility where fire safety is taught. Kids, big and little alike, enjoy the fact that they can actually put their hands the equipment, try on the gear, and work with parents to establish an escape plan for their homes. Most importantly children to can learn what to do in this situation rather than being paralyzed by fear. This is one place that really should be on your list of places to visit while in New York City, the price is certainly nice and it could save a life.

The Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art is another great place to spend a few hours and learn about the many different aspects of art, comics, and cartoons and what kind of role they have played in recording the history of our world. They offer different exhibitions at different times so this is a place you could definitely visit often in order to get the maximum enjoyment from the process. The hours for this particular museum are different than the average so be sure to make sure they will open to the public on the day and time you wish to visit. Current admission rates are $3 for children and adults over the age of 12.

Mount Vernon Hotel Museum and Garden is another great place to learn, this time it's about history. This building is steeped in history and was once the home of the daughter of President Adams. Take a walk through history inside this lovely home turned hotel and then stroll around in the gardens outside. If you feel a need to get away from the big city while remaining in the big city this is a great place to visit and feel the air around you and forget about the fact that the nearest mall is actually very close by.

The Brooklyn Children's Museum is great fun for kids of all ages, shapes, sizes, and nationalities. Fun after all, is a universal language and you will find plenty of that here. The good news is that this particular fun is actually well disguised education. The Brooklyn Children's Museum was the very first museum of its kind, by that I mean the first museum that was dedicated to entertaining and educating children. It was a wildly successful experiment that is responsible for the 300 children's museums now located around the world. The admission is very reasonable at $5 per person and children under the age of 1 are free. The museum is closed on Mondays during July and August and on Mondays and Tuesdays for the remainder of the year with the exception of certain public school recesses. It is best to check with the Museum if you are uncertain and hoping for a Tuesday visit.

The New York Hall of Science is another great learning experience that is available here. There is so much to do and see here and most importantly you get to play with many exciting new toys and such. Enjoy activities and exhibits that bring the science to magic and prove that they are not exactly mutually exclusive. Magic is after all, in the eye of the beholder. Exhibitions change frequently and always offer something fun for everyone. There are age appropriate activities for children and the science playground ($3 per person admission fee above the museum admission fee of $11 per adult and $8 per child is required for the playground) is always a big hit. Now you're off to an excellent educational experience that everyone in your family will think was simply fun.

So, your child is beginning to get restless and make you restless. He has got more time than is good for him, and you are now considering after school programs - anything that will keep him busy for a few life-saving hours! Most after school activities can be broadly classified into three - recreational, educational and society-oriented. The last bit usually comes in when your child is already a bit grown up and can voice his own interests.

Educational activities aim at furthering the knowledge of your child. His general awareness, his understanding and his memory are targeted and he is given various techniques that will help him improve one or all of these. Programs such as intensive memory training and speed mathematics are educational after school activities. There are academic programs that will go over your child's homework and class work and help the child gain more in-depth knowledge in the various subjects. Thus academic programs have a definite edge over the fun and games, especially if parents feel that their child has a lot of catching up to do.

Recreational activities include sports and games, fine arts, painting etc. The main thrust here is to have fun. Of course, classes become more competitive as the child climbs up the ladder. Many sport events, competitions, stage performances etc are held to encourage the child.

When we compare the merits of the two kinds of activities, I believe that the recreational programs have more meat. Firstly, children do not enjoy learning unless they themselves feel curious about something. Most academic programs are standardized courses that are not too flexible. They have a general purpose and a well laid out methodology. After a number of hours at school, the child may feel bored. Further study may overwhelm him and make him feel frustrated. Burnout is very much a possibility here.

Recreational programs provide a welcome break from the monotony of learning and studies. The mental challenge and the physical exertion make the child feel a renewed zest and a pleasant sense of fulfillment. Group activity teaches him social skills, discipline and patience. It is a proven fact that children involved in extra curricular activities get better grades than others. Sometimes closing the textbooks and playing a game may be the best way to handle your studies.

Whatever program you choose for your child, regular evaluation is the key to success. You will have to measure the child's progress. If progress is unsatisfactory, shift your child out of the program. The child should also have the freedom to reject an activity if and when he feels bored with it. Generally, programs that combine the educational with the recreational are best suited especially for younger children. This way, children can have fun while they learn.

Mention a million dollars in scholarships as few as ten years ago, and most university officials and everybody else would have laughed in your face. It won't happen today. There are two reasons why. College scholarship opportunities have grown
tremendously and the cost of an undergraduate education continues to go up and up with no relief in sight. The value of a four-year military academy degree is now at $323,450. Who could afford that? Some people have a habit of putting forth only minimal effort in all of life’s endeavors. In college, aiming to simply earn a passing grade in each course is not enough. What you may not realize is that your GPA can follow you for years after you have graduated college, attesting to your determination and ethic to potential employers. Though an employer may not rely solely on your GPA to assess whether you should be considered further for a job opportunity, a respectable GPA certainly speaks more highly for your character than having barely fulfilled the minimal requirements of your degree. Not only will a poor GPA be a glaring imperfection on your resume when you enter the workforce, a low GPA could cause you to lose a valuable scholarship or financial aid, or waste valuable student loan funds. Achieving a respectable GPA involves consistent effort and relentless dedication in every single class, and making up for a bad start is more difficult than getting on the right track from the beginning.

One important step toward earning a great GPA is being aware of how your grade is calculated in each class. Each professor should outline the system by which your grade will be calculated at the start of the class, and the grading system can vary greatly from class to class. Be sure that you are aware of each component making up your grade and work to diligently fulfill every requirement. If pop quizzes administered during class make up a percentage of your final grade, attend every single class meeting so you will not miss one. Failing to take advantage of every opportunity to earn credit will hurt your class grade and thus your GPA.

You may need to adjust your study habits to fit each class. Attending every class meeting and diligently paying attention to the professor’s comments about exams will give you an edge when it comes to testing in a particular class. Exam and quiz formats vary greatly, from multiple choice to essay to word problems, and studying in the wrong way can be detrimental. Also important is knowing what material will be covered on each exam. Does the exam strictly cover textbook material, or is all subject matter covered in lecture also fair game? Professors often incorporate a bit of both into their exams, so attending class and taking detailed notes goes a long way.

In addition to knowing grading policies and adapting study habits, earning a high GPA requires that you be consistent. Being prepared sometimes and winging it other times is not a good strategy for building your GPA. Earning a degree is not supposed to be easy, and the students who excel are those who are consistently prepared in every class.

The numerous distractions and temptations surrounding the typical college lifestyle can make it difficult for students to remain focused on their grades. Inevitably, many college freshmen do not make it past the first year. Non-sectarian Princeton University in New Jersey is a revered seat of learning, part of the elite Ivy League conglomeration of eight colleges, and has a long and rich history. Founded in the town of Elizabeth in 1746 as the College of New Jersey, this premier educational establishment was relocated to Princeton ten years after its formation, but didn’t change its name to reflect its new location until some 150 years later.

The original university’s building - the Nassau Hall - forms the centre point of today’s campus. It has been added to and changed function many times over the years, but still retains its original façade. During the college’s 150 year anniversary in 1896, Princeton adopted the title of Woodrow Wilson’s keynote speech: “Princeton in the nation’s service” as its informal motto. Wilson was then a faculty member, but six years later became the University’s 13th President and immediately set about enlarging and improving the college. Plans for a graduate school were finalized during his term of office and Wilson also doubled the size of the faculty. His vision and plans formed the basis of the university’s expansion and development for the remainder of the 20th Century. Indeed, during 1996-97 Princeton celebrated its 250th birthday, expanding its motto to include: “and in the service of all nations” reflecting the worldwide distribution of its alumni.

From its humble beginnings based around Nassau Hall, Princeton has now expanded to a 600 acre campus incorporating over 160 buildings and boasting 1,200 faculty members. There are over six million books residing on over seventy miles of shelving in the prestigious Princeton ‘Firestone’ library, and although the university traditionally focused on undergraduate education it has latterly turned to also providing Masters Degrees and PHDs as it increases its graduate education prospectus.

If you have been out of high school for a while and are tired of working in a dead-end career, you probably have considered going back to college. If you are intimidated about going back as an adult and are worried about being the only person over 25, don’t despair. According to statistics, since 1998 the number of adult learns has increased 41 percent making over 2.9 million students over the age of 35 going back to college.

If you are planning to go back to college, here are a few things to consider:

1. Flexibility is key. Many colleges and universities offer flexible course scheduling with classes offered nights and weekends. This means that if you are holding down a job while going back to school, you can often tailor your courses around your work. If you have children, many institutions offer campus childcare services. A third thing to remember is that you do not have to go back to school full time; your course load can remain minimal. But, if you are looking for financial aid, you may be required to take a specific amount of hours.

2. Make more money. The higher your education the higher your salary. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, employees with a high school diploma averaged $27,915 a year while those with a bachelor’s degree earned $51,206. Individuals with master’s degrees averaged $74,602. Statistics also show that seventy five percent of future positions will require at least some type of certification or licensure.

3. You didn’t graduate from high school. If you did not graduate from high school but received your G.E.D., don’t despair. Over 97 percent of colleges accept students with a G.E.D. diploma.

4. How will I pay? Paying for college through scholarships and financial aid is much of an option to adults as it is those just graduating from high school. There are various forms of grants and low interest loans that are offered regardless of your grade point average, financial need or credit history.

5. How will I get there? If your community does not have a college and you don’t have time to commute, there are now options. Courses today can be taken online or through distance learning programs. Check with the college or university you are interested in to discuss these options. Remember, if you take distance courses through institutes outside of your state, it may be more costly. You will get a financial break staying with a school in state.

6. Do your homework. After identifying what school you would like to attend, make an appointment with the academic advisor. Be prepared to have a few things with you such as old transcripts – that is if you have attended any college prior. Also, do some homework on what field of study you are interested in. 8. Check if your life experiences count for credit. Last, ask whether the institute you want to attend offers credits for life experience. Many schools do this through exams such as CLEP or DANTES. These are called ‘life experience credits’.
