Where you position your conservatory or orangery in respect to your property can have quite an effect on how you use it. Two key criteria need to be considered before you agree the designs, 1) the position of your conservatory in relation to the sun, and 2) the position of your conservatory in relation to your property. We will explore both now.

The positioning of your conservatory/orangery in relation to the sun

North Facing
A north facing conservatory or orangery will need a bit of planning if you are planning to use the building all year round. It will receive much less direct sunlight so you will need to consider heating and insulation to ensure it is comfortable to use during the cold winter months.

Less direct sunlight will bring advantages since you will get less of the greenhouse effect enabling you to use the room comfortably all year round (assuming you have heating). So from that point of view it would make an ideal office or something similarly.

So initially a north facing conservatory or orangery may appear like the worst of the four options, but some people often prefer it especially if they are going to put their conservatory or orangery to this sort of use.

East Facing
Since the sun rises in the East, an east facing room is ideal for breakfast rooms. They are perfect for the morning coffee on a balcony experience, but at least with this you are shielding yourself from the weather. In addition, easterly winds can blow quite cold so you would need to consider the heating options to ensure you can use it all year round.

South Facing
A south facing room will get most of the sun for most of the day. This will be a benefit in winter since you will need less heating as what sun there is will come into your conservatory or orangery to heat it. Hi there! Welcome to the world of independent living! Perhaps it's your first time to live on your own, away from your parents, away from your old neighbors. Now I assume you have already settled down everything in your new apartment. The couches are in, the television set is functioning and you have just stocked your fridge with food that will last the whole week.

But wait, does your refrigerator sound noisier than when you first bought it? True, living independently has its perks but now, you have to deal with this problem alone. You can always take your refrigerator to the repair man but how will you know if it's a real problem? To save your time, effort and of course, your money, you have to be able to know when you can take action or when time to have the fridge repaired.

Here are the common problems many households experience all over the globe.

1. My fridge is not cool enough
For it to be able to function properly (its main function being the preservation of your food), your fridge should have a temperature between 38-40 degrees Fahrenheit. If you sense that your fridge does not give off enough coolness, or is already giving warm air instead, first check your thermometer. If it really has a warmer than usual temperature, try to adjust the thermostat controller inside the refrigerator..

If after 6 hours the temperature still did not change, check the fan if it's running. If it runs fine, check the condenser coils. Some models have their condenser coils at the front while most have them in the back. Remove the protective cover and vacuum the accumulated dust and dirt. You can also use a stiff brush. If the dust and dirt have hardened or if they are greasy, wash with soap and water.

You can also try defrosting the fridge. Remove all the perishable foods and items from your fridge and from the freezer. Turn the refrigerator and the freezer off and leave all the doors open overnight. Replace the food in the morning, turn the thing on, put the thermostat to a middle setting and check the temperature after 6 hours.

After cleaning the condenser coils and defrosting the freezer and you still find the temperature warm, check the door seal. In some cases, broken door seals do not seal off the cool air inside the fridge and so warm air can enter. If the seals are broken, you will have to go to your local store and replace them with new ones.

2. My fridge leaks
This is a very common refrigerator problem. Water (that is hopefully not flooding your kitchen floor right now) may come from different sources from inside the fridge. If your refrigerator has a water or ice dispenser, it is highly possible that the lines to the dispenser are broken. Once these lines are broken, you may have to replace them with new ones.

If your refrigerator unit has a defrost tray or a drain pan underneath, try to check it for holes and cracks. You can also try to clean your drain tube. It can be in the floor of the refrigerator or at the back, on top of the wall. Use a turkey baster to clean it and put a mixture of half gallon hot water with a half cup of bleach through the opening. This solution will go into the drain pan. After cleaning the drain tube, empty the drain pan.

There may also be water on the ceiling of your fridge. This may come from a clogged drain in the freezer. If water comes from this source, try unclogging your drain or remove the divider of your fridge and freezer and then dry the insulation.

3. My fridge gives off a loud noise
Also one of the most common refrigerator problems, noisiness of the fridge is now often dismissed as a basic feature of the said appliance. However, most of the time, noise is one sign that there's something wrong with your unit.

Noise, like water leakage, may also come from different sources but more often than not, it comes from the inside. If the noise is coming from the inside of the fridge, it is very likely that your fan is causing it. Oftentimes, especially if your fridge has been with you for quite a while, the fan will gradually become noisy, making chirping, squealing or even groaning sounds. To find out if it's causing the noise, open the door. If the noise becomes louder when the door is open, have your fan checked.
