Driving any vehicle requires a bit more care and attention when driving around in the rain, as they start behaving differently and often lose grip so have a look at the points below and remembering them the next time it raining and you out on your mobility scooter.

Avoiding Puddles

Try and avoid puddles as much as possible, because you can’t see how deep they are and you might ground your scooter out or even get a puncher which could then slow you down and get you even more wet. Also be considerate to others and try not to splash people because you know how annoying it is when it happens to you and you don’t want to give people that use a mobility scooter a bad reputation.

Keep The Electrics Dry

As we all know electrics and water don’t mix to well, if water does get onto the electrics the scooter may stop working or even start acting erratically. To prevent this from happening you could get a tiller cover which helps in preventing water from getting to the electrics located with the head of the scooter. If you have an electric wheelchair or powerchair you can also get a joystick cover which will do the same job.

Drive Safety

It is important that you take extra care when you are travelling when the floor is wet and if you are driving in puddles then please drive slower as you don’t want the mobility scooter to aquaplane and then lose total control.  Also remember that your stopping distance will be increased much the same as it would with a car.

Safe at Home

If you are at home and your planning to go out and it does start raining, you might want to rethink about going journey, is it important that you need to go out now or can it wait for an hour or so to see if the rain stops.

What To Do If You Do Get Caught Out

It will happen at some point, but no matter how much you plan your journey you will get caught out. With the dark night drawing in and fireworks night just around the corner, it’s the time of year went many people are travelling about at night whom don’t normally do so.  But if you are using a mobility scooter or powerchair below is couple of points to consider to make sure you are safe when travelling about  at night!

Lights
Many medium size and large mobility scooters and powerchairs already have lights fitted but many smaller portable products don’t have lights fitted as standard so you might need to think about fixing some additional lights. The best way to get light fitted is to look at push bike lights which can then be mounted onto the tubing to provide a visible light to other pavements and road users, one of the benefits of this is that the lights won’t drain the battery pack so you will still get the distance you normally achieve.

Plan Your Journey
If you are travelling about in the dark it is always advisable to plan journey and use well-lit road as much as you can, when crossing the road make sure that you are visible and not between two parks cars because when you are using a mobility product you are unfortunately lower down and might not be seen by road users.

Reflective items
A large range of reflective products are available to ensure you are visible of an evening so you might want to consider purchase something such as a reflective rest or jacket which will also keep you warm! But a reflective bag is also available which slips onto the back of the seat. Most electric mobility products have reflective stickers mounted onto the back but you can also purchase reflective strips which can be mounted higher allowing it to be more visible other pavement and road users.

Keep In Contact
Try and inform people of your movements and if you are travelling to someone home why not give them a call when you are on your way (and get them to get the kettle on!). Also do the same when you are travelling back, just to keep yourself safe!

To proud to use a mobility scooter
Do you know someone who could really benefit from having a mobility scooter or a powerchair but are too proud (or even stubborn) to have one! This is something which we see all the time, with many people choosing to struggle or suffer in pain. Some people see that using a mobility scooter might be a form of giving up or laziness but that is far from the truth.
