If you are seeking a job, it is a good time to update your resume in MBA Focus or to upload one if you have not done so already. To be reminded of instructions contact the CMC.

As I mentioned last week, we partnered with 2 additional vendors that reach out to companies for MBA job postings. There is no cost for OneWire and a reduced monthly cost for Doostang. OneWire primarily targets financial services firms to post jobs and find matching resumes in OneWire's database. If you would like to have your resume searched by financial services firms, sign up at onewire.com.

Many of you are already using Doostang, a job listing resource only available to students in the top 20 MBA programs. If you would like to join for the first time, or upgrade to a premium account at the discounted rate, please sign up in the CMC. We will send your contact information to Doostang and you will receive the link to the partner page.

And, this week the CEO of MBA Highway, www.mbahighway.com, an MBA job and internship search website followed up with me about referring you to his company's website.
We will continue to urge students to actively work your networks, even if you apply to jobs listed with any of the above vendors. Just this week, I heard from two students who did a masterful job of networking in their respective fields and ended up with seemingly impossible jobs to obtain given the stiff competition. Both of them said they did endless networking and the job offers came from contacts that were 3-4 degrees of separation away from their original outreach.

Just About Jobs in NYC March 27

We have held two successful Just About Jobs events, in Boston and San Francisco, with 20 companies and 81 students participating. Don't miss the NYC event on March 27 - we have not held a Day in the Big Apple in previous years as most of our recruiters already originate from the Metropolitan area. However, since so many of you are seeking positions in this area we decided the time was right. Check the job postings in CJ Online for company details.

If you already have a job – don't miss Jodi Glickman's '02 presentation on April 7 when she will focus on critical communication skills and other success factors on the job. Jodi is an outstanding presenter.

If are seeking a job you will also benefit from Jodi's presentation as her rules of thumb apply to all communicators...and, you will soon have a job! I hope you are paying close attention to the deadlines for job listings in CJ Online and on JohnsonJobLeads-L. One of our alumni who responded about posting positions for the San Francisco Just About Jobs event wrote:

We have attracted over 30 companies for the MBA Project Initiative – companies hiring students on a short term basis after graduation. Look for more details soon.

CMC Advisors individual outreach to job seekers

The Associate Directors in the CMC will be contacting you in the next couple of weeks, if we have not heard from you recently, to talk about your job search. We want to make sure that you are aware of all the resources available to you and that you know how to use them. Please be prepared to tell us, if you haven't already:
-Your internship target, and alternatives you are considering
-What have been your efforts so far, what has worked, and what hasn't. We can help you think creatively about alternative or back-up plans for your search and we may be able to you refer you to alumni or other contacts at companies of interest to you.

Since reaching out to so many contacts about posting jobs and participating we'd like to share their thoughts:
One alumnus told us recently that he had taken a new position at a real estate investment firm. He said this about his success in finding his job: "Fortunately, I was able to network into my current position through a series of personal relationships. Kind of a long story but there were a million phone calls and emails before something stuck."
-It's important to be persistent.
-Don't give up if a contact doesn't return your phone call or email. Try at least three times.
-You can forward your original email, indicate that you know they are very busy and may not have read your previous email, and that you are still interested in talking with them.

An alumnus, who is reviewing resumes for Just About Jobs in San Francisco, made this suggestion for students: "One piece of feedback I would like to send to students: please save resumes in pdf format. A lot of the resumes I have looked at use a table in Word to help with formatting; however, when viewed (in Word) electronically, the lines are overwhelming and detract from the content. This makes a bad impression, especially at a company where simplicity of design is one of our core values."

Uncovering Job Leads

For the next two and a half months, the CMC staff will be continuing its outreach efforts to uncover job leads. To provide 49 students with interviews in Boston, over 120 companies were contacted by email and phone. We are making the same effort for the Just About Jobs events in San Francisco and NYC. CMC staff are also searching for MBA jobs listed on company web sites and calling to find the company contact so that we can help match students to appropriate listings. Other initiatives include periodic emails to all of our alumni, domestically and internationally reminding them to provide us with job leads. As Joe Thomas suggested in his most recent email to students, the CMC also encourages students to contact former employers to inquire about job opportunities and summer '09 short-term projects. You may be able to help connect a classmate. If you have accepted a job and continue to be contacted by companies, thank them for their interest and keep the door open for next year -- then ask if you can refer a qualified classmate.

Come to Careers 2.0 on Tuesday at 4:30 and learn how others led a successful job search as well as how Charles Hamilton '04 navigated the start-up world.

Starting Your Own Business and Best Practices

As you can sense, recruiters were making fewer internship offers this year. As I benchmark with my colleagues at other top MBA schools, the story is the same. Everyone is experiencing fewer recruiters making fewer offers. Come to Careers 2.0 on Tuesday, 4:30 in B-11 to share contacts and off-campus job search best practices. Two second-year students will be available to help address your questions.

Charles Hamilton '04, who was recently appointed Entrepreneur in Residence, came to the Johnson School from a non-profit. He used to sit in my office and lament about the cultures of the large corporations recruiting on campus. He didn't want to fit into that environment. When he graduated, he stayed local and became a serial entrepreneur. He was most recently the President of Novomer, a company based on Cornell technology that makes plastic from carbon dioxide. He grew the company from 2 to 25 employees and closed $6.6 million in equity investment from multiple venture capitalists. You can email Charles, through Outlook, to set up an appointment with him. You may think you are helping your peers by cancelling your interview; however, most employers are unwilling to provide alternate candidates. We want to avoid having companies travel to Ithaca for a half-empty schedule. Only cancel an interview if you have accepted an offer. It is not ethical to keep interviewing once you have accepted an offer.

MBA Nonprofit Connection: This semester the MBA Nonprofit Connection will send us approximately 45 screened, MBA-oriented job opportunities at the Johnson School on a rolling basis between mid-January and mid-March. The average compensation can be half the amount of profit sector jobs, however, the jobs address a range of issues including the environment, health, media, microfinance, philanthropy, social enterprise and venture philanthropy.

Just About Jobs: There is an information session this Wednesday at 4:30pm in B-10. Learn how to manage the process of the three off-campus interviewing events in Boston, Bay area and NY.

Careers 2.0: The CMC is holding weekly sessions, Careers 2.0, beginning February 3, a forum in which students can help each other find contacts and discuss job search strategies. Following each forum will be a brief "studio" session where students can get assistance in using LinkedIn and other professional networks, and receive feedback on cover letters and other employment-related correspondence. The forum is called Careers 2.0 and CAG decided to streamline titles by naming the job leads listserv, Careers 2.0-Online.

Job Lead Listserv: The new Officers of the Career Action Group (CAG) came up with the idea for a job leads listserv. Different from CJ Online where actual job descriptions are posted, JohnsonJobLeads, is a listserv to share company web site or job board positions that might help your classmates or to post leads from colleagues, friends, or family. Even if you have already accepted a position, you can still be helpful to your peers. All resident students have been subscribed and we hope you will participate. You can opt out.

Keith Cowing: Speaking of web pages, Keith had some great luck in his quest for "self-promotion" and a summer internship. He entered a submission to a competition on how to fix Digg's business model (a web startup that is very popular but does not make much money). The contest was run by a major tech and business blog, Silicon Alley Insider. Keith won the competition and they posted his winning submission along with his resume in one of their articles, along with some great comments. They get over a million readers a month so it's wonderful PR for Keith and his job search. It has already led to some introductions to recruiters. Congratulations, Keith!

If you are interviewing this week, I wish you the very best. If you are searching for jobs off-campus I'll see you at the information session on Wednesday.

Best, Karin

MBA interviewing 101

Welcome back Class of 2010! We missed you walking the halls of Sage. For those students interviewing on campus it will be a hectic couple of weeks. This Saturday we are offering another opportunity for a "just-in-time" mock interview. I hope you'll take advantage of it.

Remember when you are preparing for interviews:
-Know more than the Web site version of company information. Read articles about the company and have a good understanding of the position for which you are interviewing. Nothing makes a recruiter more critical than when a student does not really understand the job function in question. Talk to second years who interned there last year. Also, do some diligent research in the Management Library.
-Be clear on your short-term and long-term goals. Even if you are not certain about either, communicate confidence about your goals for purposes of the interview. You can always change your mind later but this is not the time to waver.
-Be concise in your answers. Think in bullet points and make sure you answer the question asked. You can find time at the end of the interview to communicate points not covered.
-Ask questions that could not be answered from reading the company web site.
If you read the book Monkey Business by Rolfe and Troob, you may recall the passage they wrote about MBA interviews: "The recruiters, after being asked one of these imbecilic questions, would generally respond with something akin to 'that's an excellent, excellent question'---what was really going through their mind was generally more along the lines of 'Come up here, Doughboy, so I can jam this Gucci loafer up your---so that the tassels bounce off your tonsils.'"
You can avoid the same fate by developing original questions that reflect your research and networking as well as genuine interest in the company.

I continue to hear from the employers that you are a strong class. I'm looking forward to hearing about your success over the next few months.

Best, Karin

Internship Searches Don't Take A Break

Some of the other top MBA Schools begin their summer internship recruiting in early January. Since you have almost five weeks off, it is important to use some of that time towards your job search:

1. As unemployment in the country increases, the pressure will intensify for your internship search. Make contact over the holiday break with the organizations in which you are most interested even if they are not hiring until later in the spring. Gaining experience this summer in your intended field should take precedence over concern about level of compensation.
2. For the companies that recruit on other campuses but not at the Johnson School, check out their web sites for internship resume submission deadlines. Most companies will bring on some students from non-core campuses to diversity their candidate pool. Network with Cornell alumni in those firms and ask them to contact HR on your behalf.
3. SAVE THE DATE for Super Saturday Interview Jam on Saturday, January 17, to provide you with "just in time" practice for internship interviews that begin 2 days later. Check your emails over the break for more information about registration.

Have a great few weeks away, stay healthy and enjoy your time with family and friends!

Best, Karin

Plan for your Off-Campus Search NOW!

We hear that many of you are looking for more support for your off-campus job search. We invite and encourage you to attend the "Success with the Off-Campus Search" program scheduled for 5:30 pm on December 2. You will learn how to more effectively use LinkedIn and hear from classmates that successfully navigated an off-campus search to land a position.

The following tips are from Keith Ferrazzi's book Never Eat Alone. They are good reminders for the November and December holiday breaks.

1.Feed people: There is no better way to be generous than by inviting a friend or colleague who may be alone during the holidays to your Thanksgiving dinner. It is an opportunity to build a strong networking relationship.
2. Make introductions: Introduce people from different parts of your life who might benefit from knowing each other. It is an ongoing puzzle, matching up the right people and the right opportunities. Never hoard your relationship equity.
3.Become a knowledge broker: Share information, by blog, by email, by Twitter, over lunch or however else. Focus on sharing information that helps people solve problems, however broadly defined.
4. Tell a story: Sharing your history is always a generous way to give something of yourself to a friend or colleague. Telling a real story about your past - with a beginning, middle, end, and maybe even a Kleenex moment - is even better. They will be happy for the glimpse of what makes you tick.
5. Mentor and get mentored: Perhaps the only thing you can do that is more generous than serving as a caring, consistent mentor to someone is asking someone else to mentor you - and then working your hardest to make them proud.

Have a great holiday.

Best, Karin

Summer Partnership Program

Only a percentage of your class is seeking careers in the non-profit sector. Yet, there are many organizations in need of MBA talent. After talking with my colleagues at Hass and Fuqua, I decided to purchase a membership in the MBA Nonprofit Connection. As it says on their website: The MNC was founded in 1995, works with business schools to offer MBAs access to meaningful career opportunities. Increasing numbers of non-profits have actively recruited MBAs to help them strengthen their management and advance their missions. As a student in a partner school, you can apply for positions that have been actively pursued by the MNC staff. The positions have been vetted for MBA level responsibilities. The first posting was entered into CJ Online Friday.

I recently watched a Swiss film titled "Vitus" that portrays a kid who struggles between his parents' dreams and his own. It's a good film and I mention it here because one of the movie lines is memorable: Referring to the stock market, the underage genius pianist portrayed by a real life genius pianist, also plays the stock market. He says, "It's great-where else can you earn 1000 percent and only lose 100 percent?" It's a good perspective to have during present market conditions.

Best, Karin

The NovAspire Experience

This week begins the required practice interview requirement with NovAspire. You will be in a group with three other students and a professional executive coach. Each student has the opportunity to be interviewed. Your classmates and the facilitator then provide feedback and constructive suggestions for improvement. You also receive a DVD recording of your interview to take home and view. Make the most of this experience by making some time before the interview to:
-Practice your pitch out loud
-Have at least 2 PAR stories ready for the common desired skills in MBA candidates: leadership, team experience, conflict resolution, failure, greatest achievement, persuasion or selling of products or ideas.
Most students find this to be one of the most valuable CMC programs of the semester.

Two more Industry Guides were completed by the Management Library in cooperation with the CMC. You can now find the Marketing and Finance guides, in addition to Consulting, at the Industry Guide link of our home page Nav bar. I urge you to use them. There are also Exxon/Mobil and Citi FMA briefings, a CMAM Passport meeting and Marketing Passport personal coaching sessions. Plus, both local area consultants, John Neuman and Dick Shafer are here this week and open for advising appointments. I also urge you to set up your required practice interview this week with a second year student (your career work group career coach or another group's coach or any other second year). Just make sure they complete the electronic evaluation form so that we know you have completed one of the requirements. The reason I'd like you to complete the interview this week is that you will be more prepared for the mock interview with the professional executive coaching group arriving next week. Many first year students tell me after they have the NovAspire interview that they wish they had prepared better for it to make the most of the experience. We know you are very busy with your core classes but these practice sessions are critical to your success in obtaining the internship you desire.

Best, Karin

The Truth About You

That is the title of the talk given by Marcus Buckingham on Friday for Johnson School students. Mr. Buckingham worked for Gallup as a senior research where he interviewed thousands of employees at every career stage. In his presentation, he emphasized several points that are critical to career satisfaction:

-Your interests are a very good clue to your strengths. Your interests are part of a pattern inside you. As you find yourself happy and in the zone, write down what you are doing.
-A strength is something that makes you feel focused, in the zone, with time whipping by. If, after you have done it, you feel fulfilled, it may be a strength. Take time to write down your strengths as you act them out.
-What you do in a job is more important that where you do it or who you do it with.
-The perfect job is not found, but created. There are parts of every job you like and don't like. Carve out the job to fit your interests and strengths. You do the other parts but you concentrate on your strengths and therefore you succeed and find satisfaction.

In his took kit that he provided to attendees there is a notebook. He suggests for a week writing down all the activities that make you feel strong. And, all the activities that make you feel weak. Concentrate on your strengths and look for a job, carve out a job that allows you to incorporate those strengths.

Good advice.

Best, Karin

Are You Ready?

On Wednesday, October 22, at 10:00-12:00 a.m. (Annabel Taylor Hall) the CMC is offering the third program in a series that started at Orientation. This experience receives rave reviews from students! You will be asked to sign up for one two-hour slot in which four students will have brief digitally recorded interviews with the coach. Students will provide feedback to one another as well as receive comments from the professional coach. Sign-ups will be available at the beginning of November.

For these interviews you are responsible for:
-Signing up for your NovAspire Mock Interview in the CMC
-Staying for the entire two hours of your time slot
-Dressing in business attire for the mock interview
-Bringing a blank DVD to the interview as you keep the recording for later review

CJOnline Training
You must attend a CJOnline Training session in order to participate in on-campus recruiting. Go to the "Search for Events" tab
-Under "Event Type" use the drop-down menu to select "Career Management Center Event"

You can sign-up for either presentation day:
November 14 at 4:30 p.m.
December 3 at 4:30 p.m.

We will continue to post details about these requirements, including a list of second year career coaches, on our CMC home page, left Navigation Bar.

Many of you are asking about access to the Cornell Alumni Directory. You should know that you are the only students at Cornell given access...ordinarily only alumni have access. However, several years ago I was able to convince the Alumni Affairs Department that with your level of experience and maturity you could be trusted to professionally manage the communications. We provided your contact information to alumni affairs and to the third party vendor that manages the directory in August. We have contacted them four times to speed up the process. We were told you would have access last week. It should be very soon.

Best, Karin

It's time for...Resumania!

This week the Career Action Group (CAG) is sponsoring Resumania on September 30 and October 1. This is a great opportunity to have your resume reviewed one last time before you submit it to the online resume database viewed by employers. The Career Action Group includes 9 students who work on your behalf to provide career programming throughout the year. They work closely with the CMC and play a big role in organizing the Career Work Groups. Resumania is an event that allows you to get your resume reviewed by second year students in your target functional area. There will be 30 second year students reviewing resumes on Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:30 in the atrium and 15 more on Wednesday, in the atrium.

This week, I heard from 6 alumni who reached out offering to assist students with career issues in one of the most dramatic weeks we have experienced in some time. That says a lot about the Johnson School community. Our alumni are accessible and willing to help the School in so many ways. Some of these alumni have been matched with students for practice interviews on October 17 in NYC and others as career coaches. I shared an email with a couple of the career clubs from an energy trader in Houston, urging students to think more broadly about their career options and preferred locations. He also attached a few current job openings. Your investment in your MBA education allows you to become a member of this great student/alumni network.

If you have not completed your career marketing plan on pages 13-17 of the CMC Career Workbook, now is a great time to do so. It is really helpful in clarifying your thoughts and getting more specific with your action steps. It will help your CMC advisor or career coach to more effectively assist you to reach your goals.

I just finished Randy Pausch's book, The Last Lecture. This is the former professor at Carnegie Mellon who died last year at a young age of cancer. Much of what he wrote is memorable, but I especially liked this quote from Seneca, a Roman philosopher: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity". I'm sure some of you have read or heard that quote before. In this economy, it is especially telling as you never know where that opportunity is lurking, but you can be sure it is there. I also saw the movie Man on Wire this weekend. This is the story of the Frenchman who walked the wire attached to the roof between the World Trade Center buildings. He lived what Walt Disney espoused , "if you can dream it you can do it".
Best, Karin

Bus Trips and Briefings!

On October 30,and November 6,13, and 20,the School will provide buses so that you can build your network with alumni and other contacts working in NYC. The CMC staff asks the visitors for their cards. Some of the company representatives and alumni are not bringing their cards and that is intentional. It’s one thing to receive thank you notes from students after an interview schedule of 12 people. Imagine the volume of email when 50 – 100 students attend a briefing. If there is one person in particular you’d like to thank and the CMC does not have their contact information (all business card information is entered into CJ Online the day after the briefing), write to the HR contact for the company. Or, write to another Johnson graduate in the firm and ask if you can obtain the email. You also might find the contact information through LinkedIn or JAC (Johnson Alumni Connection).

I’d like to hear your thoughts about briefings. Are you finding them valuable? This blog is intended to be an exchange. I’ll read your comments and respond as appropriate. This week there is another great line-up of companies – BCG, TD Securities, Morgan Stanley, Welch’s Foods and more. Go to CJ Online for the most up-to-date information.
Best, Karin

CMC '10 Blog

From the comments I received, it seems many of you had informative conversations with the alumni and recruiters at the Career Fair on Thursday. The golf tournament provided additional opportunities to connect with employers. This week brings company briefings with Citi banking, Lazard, Liberty Mutual, Unilever, IBM, Citicards and P&G. Even if you are concentrating your job search through off-campus contacts, you should consider attending some of the briefings to gather current trend and industry information that could be helpful to you in your conversations with other organizations.

Remember to keep notes on important conversations noting name of contact, date, and issues discussed. Keeping careful records of conversations will help you immensely in follow-up communications.

Cornell Career Services is sponsoring a Career Fair this week. Since many of you will be attending the Career Fair on Thursday you may find it an opportune time to put your "pitch" to good use. In your Workbook, read and complete the exercises up to and including page twelve that addresses "the pitch". One of your classmates has offered to provide assistance with your pitch...he has experience as an improvisation actor and is a good coach at providing constructive feedback. He promises not to turn this into a comedy routine. If you're interested, let me know.
-As you develop your resume you may want to take a look at resumes of students from prior years. Go to the FAQ link below and you will find information about the MBA Focus Resume Book link.
-In your spare time, you might find some articles of interest in the most recent version of Jungle Magazine. http://www.eyemag.se/core/showpage.php?PROJECTNR=2709&SITEID=daf1b
Best, Karin

'10 CMC Blog

GREETINGS MBAIs -- This blog and the CMC website are new to you and to us!
