Three events, two locations on today's calendar for the One Lappers. First off is two sessions at Carolina Motorsports Park, and then one at BMW Performance Center.

After the first event this morning. No suprise TSM and Leh Keen at the top, with Catesby Jones right on him. Only 1/2 a second over 3 laps. GT-R's at 1,2,4,5,9, and 11.

Daytona #1. A little bit of drama for the TSM team. At 130 mph during the warm up lap the car lost a right front tire. Since it happened before the timed laps started, they were able to borrow a tire, take a 10 second penalty and still finish in 3rd. GT-R's in 1,2,3,4,6,and 9 of the top ten. Not too bad.

“Hey guys. We did blow a tire but borrowed one and will be able to still run the first session. With a 10 second penalty though. We aren’t exactly sure why the tire blew and will likely never know because it really destroyed the underside of the fender. It went at around 130mph in nascar T4 on my warm up lap… It is very common to have tires blow on the banking as it is an extreme case scenario with loads and such.

Hugh from Chariots of Palm Beach is loaning us his tire for the day then we will get a new tire put on our wheel for the rest of the event. We can not thank him enough!!!!!

TSM 2013 Nissan GT-R

The first event of the day is over, and Top Speed is as usual sitting at the top of the field. GT-R's at 1,2,3 cementing them at the top 3 overall after a day and a 1/2 of competition(as of 9:40 am PDT). So out of the Top 10 for the 3 laps of Talladega #1, GT-R's were 1,2,3,5,6,7,8.

Talladega #2 starts at 12:30 local time. After Talladega the One Lappers head to Alabama International Dragway for timed runs and some bracket racing at 5pm and 5:30 local.

There is an error on the results from Talladega #2. Leh Keen and the TSM car was quickest. The next fastest car, a Dodge Viper was 7 seconds back. Once they get it corrected, I will get them posted.

Overall after two events today, with two more to come. GT-R's at 1,2,4,5. Will it be a clean sweep at the top? One Lap is going to have to GT-R's their own class.

One Lap of America Day 1: Skidpad and Autocross

Aeromotions wing on a serious looking Camaro from Canada

Gathering information as I get it from Facebook, blogs, and the One Lap of America page. OLOA updated their page this year, and its a nice upgrade.

First event of the day, Wet Skidpad. Driving around circles, on some wet concrete. As boring as an event as you can get. The fastest run ever, looks just like the slowest run ever. Either way GT-R's did well. Catesby Jones, and William Taylor(2009 overall winner) came in first with a 0.857 followed closely by the TopSpeed Motorsports entry of Douglas Wilks and Leh Keen (2010,2011,2012 overall winners). In third spot this year, the guys from Speedconcepts, Todd Treffert, and Tyson Timperly. Last year they finished 2nd overall in a GT-R, this year they are in a 2012 Mercedes SLS. Fourth spot around the wet circle was the Chariots of Palm Beach GT-R, third overall last year. Fifth overall was the Sleeper Racing Team driving a 2013 Nissan GT-R. Four out of the top 5 spots belong to GT-R's after the first event.

After the wetskid pad the teams headed over to Grissom Airforce base to do the cone dodging, I mean Autocross. Last year Leh won the event, hustling the big grey Nissan GT-R though the cones even quicker than the Autocrossing CRX. This year, not be be had, although it was kinda close. 0.004. CRX, GT-R, #6 GT-R, #7 GT-R, #9 GT-R.

Sticker day for the 2013 One Lap of America. A few cars are there, and more are on the way. The event starts May 4th and runs though May 11th. Can A Race GT-R Run 4x4?

Their question not mine. We normally associate 4X4 with off road or trucks, all wheel drive with cars. At least that is how I roll, and how I refer to them.

For GT3, all wheel drive is not allowed, so all the cars run rear wheel drive. Its not a disadvantage in this class with these cars. All wheel drive works well for a street car, works well under a variety of conditions, but generally for racing the weight, complexity, and drag rules out all wheel drive. Ricardo Divila has 55 years of racing experience, with over 2000 races, 380 in Formula 1. So he is the kind of guy you should listen too, but also have to read between the lines a little on a "NISMO" piece. Check out the video below, and subscribe to NISMO.tv.

Nissan Juke-R in the US

The Juke-R, the child of a Nissan Juke, and a Nissan GT-R. Combined, they turn out some odd looking 530 horsepower(or is it 545 now?) mini SUV. Nissan has one here in the US, and Road and Track Magazine look like they were out playing with it today. Not a bad Thursday. Interesting to see the prominent NISMO sticker on the side and the plate.

April 2013 Nissan GT-R Sales : 103 Cars

2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Its May already. The older you get, the faster it all seems to go. The April 2013 sales are out for Nissan, and there were 103 Nissan GT-R's sold with a total year to date of 371 cars. Year to date that is up 7.8 percent. Total sales for the Nissan GT-R, since 2008 in the US is 6994. Not a huge number, but the US market may over take Japanese domestic market sales by the end of this year. May sales will probably be up slightly for the Track Edition that is coming up very soon.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan North America, Inc. today reported April U.S. sales of 87,847 units versus 71,329 units a year earlier, up 23.2 percent. Nissan Division sales rose 24.6 percent for the month at 80,003 units, driven by retail sales gains by top-selling models like Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and Rogue. Sales of Infiniti vehicles were up 10 percent over the prior year, to 7,844 units.

NISSAN HIGHLIGHTS

Nissan Division posted 80,003 sales, an increase of 24.6 percent over last April's 64,200 unit total.
Sales of Nissan Altima rose 35.4 percent to 21,991, driven by a 42 percent increase in retail deliveries.
Nissan Rogue crossover sales set a new April record at 11,904 units, an increase of 39 percent over the prior April.
Nissan Pathfinder sales were up 214.7 percent to 6,473, setting a new April record and marking the sixth consecutive month it posted an increase in deliveries of at least 145 percent. Pathfinder sales are up 180.9 percent in 2013.
Sales of the all-electric Nissan LEAF jumped 423.5 percent to 1,937, spurred by the move of vehicle assembly to Nissan's vehicle and battery assembly facilities in Smyrna, Tenn., as well as a substantial price repositioning to include a wider range of trim levels and added value. Year-to-date, LEAF sales are up more than 160 percent.
The all-new Nissan Sentra posted a 44.9 percent sales increase, at 10,734 deliveries.

Comments from Jose Munoz, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing – Nissan Americas:

"April was a very good sales month for the Nissan division, not only from an overall volume standpoint where we were up more than 24 percent, but also in retail where our sales rose more than 32 percent."

"In the first quarter of 2013, we improved our retail sales by more than 4 percent while reducing deliveries to fleet customers by more than 17 percent. INFINITI HIGHLIGHTS

Infiniti today reported sales of 7,844 units in April, an increase of 10 percent from 7,129 units during April 2012.

Deliveries of Infiniti G Sedan totaled 2,696, an increase of 29 percent.

Infiniti FX performance crossover was up 12.8 percent.

Sales of the Infiniti JX 7-passenger luxury crossover increased 24.1 percent to 2,580 in April.

Autobytel Tests the 2014 Nissan GT-R

Check out this video from Autobytel of their recent test of a 2014 Nissan GT-R. They say Nissan claims 2.6 0-60 and 10.6 for the quarter, which is off a bit. Motor Trend just did 2.7 and 11.0 in a Track Edition, which is the fastest GT-R they have tested to date. White with the amber red interior. This must be the same car that was at the recent auto shows. Watch the video below.

Oh Godzilla how we love you so! And now Autobytel finally gets to test drive this beast. The 2014 Nissan GT-R is easily one of the fastest production cars on the planet only eclipsed by the super high end exotics that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. For the money though, the GT-R is a bargain considering you get 545 horsepower for only $99,590. Sure there are cars more powerful costing less, but can they run 0-60 MPH in less than 3.0 seconds?

Most people do not consider the 2014 Nissan GT-R a very pretty car. In fact many may argue that the GT-R is one of the least sexy sports cars on the road. That's fine because the GT-R's designers are more concerned with function over form. Everything you see on this car, every crease, every duct, every line; is designed to make the Nissan GT-R faster. Up front the design is maximized to make the air flow faster. There are ducts in the hood to provide fresh air, the headlights are flush and extend a ways back, and the ridges in the bumper all move air in a specific way. On the side there is a unique cut that coupled with the mirrors and roof tunnel air to the back of the car through the spoiler. The 2014 Nissan GT-R is all about science hitting the road.

There are a few cars in this planet that exists solely to scramble the gray matter inside you head. The 2014 Nissan GT-R is one of those cars and it might just be the most approachable high performance sports car of the entire group costing under $100k. This car does things that cars costing far more can do, and it does it with a small 3.8 liter twin turbo V-6. Most of the time when you pop the hood on a modern sports car, the motor is hidden behind a bunch of plastic dress-up pieces, but on the GT-R the VR38DETT is right there in all its glory. This beautiful work of art was hand built in Japan. The engine produces 545 horsepower and 463 lb-ft. of torque. Power is sent through a dual-clutch 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The ATTESA E-TS is and AWD system works with Nissan's Vehicle Dynamics Control to help with handling and torque split.

On the inside the 2014 Nissan GT-R Premium is incredibly comfortable. The seats are heated and come with contrasting suede inserts. The BOSE Audio system consists of 11 speakers with 2 of them being mounted between the rear passenger seats. The trim features a nice helping of carbon fiber and brushed aluminum pieces which give the interior of the GT-R a modern sporty feel. Once you are in the car and have a comfortable driving position its time to play with all the gadgets. The information screen on the center stack is fully customizable allowing the driver to monitor a whole bevy of performance figures.

Once you are finally driving the 2014 Nissan GT-R, you realize this sports car is something special. The power and pull is amazing and Nissan claims 0-60 MPH happens in 2.6 seconds with the ¼ flying by in 10.6 seconds which is Bugatti Veyron and Lamborghini Aventador territory. The GT-R is not only wildly fast, but it handles amazingly wells, and stops super aggressively thanks to the carbon ceramic brakes. If you want the most bang for your buck period, the Nissan GT-R is the obvious choice.

First Test: 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition

Motor Trend put a 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition though its paces, and reported their results on their site. 0-60 mph improved by 1 tenth of a second to 2.7 seconds with the quarter mile going by in 11.0@125.1 mph. So close to a 10 second FACTORY street car. The price is creeping up and up with the price as tested as $116,710. Still tens of thousands of dollars less than cars with similar performance. 1.04 G on the skidpad ain't bad either.

They say the ride quality is improved, but it is still stiff. You can expect that from a car that will pull 1.04, and Nurburgring lap times in the teens.

It didn't take a day at the track to feel the difference in ride quality -- the improvement was evident five minutes into my drive. "Still sounds like a dump truck, but a quieter, softer dump truck compared to the 2013 model," noted associate photography editor Michael Shaffer.

No one has mentioned any real improvement on the brakes, other than the brake ducting. Still Motor Trend reports that the Track Edition stopped 11 feet shorter than the Black Edition. Probably just a car to car, track surface to track surface, difference.

he biggest improvement in the GT-R's performance was its stopping distance, with the red rocket coming to a screeching halt from 60 mph in just 94 feet -- 11 feet sooner than the Black Edition.

Autocar just published a story quoting Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer on the upcoming Nismo version of the Nissan GT-R.

Nissan's executive vice president Andy Palmer confirmed he had driven the prototype in Japan, but declined to reveal technical details beyond saying it will be "the fastest GT-R ever".

2013 GT3 NISMO Nissan GT-R

Starting at 545 horsepower for the 2013 and 2014, plus additional changes that went into the 2014, they are expecting the NISMO version to one up the SpecV and even the Track Pack versions. I expect the NISMO to be built off the Track Pack, and add to it. More power(+10%), more aero, more brake, more speed. "The majority of the exterior changes are aero and downforce related," said Palmer. "The production car record at the Nurburgring is the gold standard, and we expect to lower that."

There is no "real" record at Nurburgring for production cars. Just the unofficial videos and posturing by the various car manufacturers. I don't count any of the small one of, 5 off supercarish tube frame, carbon fiber things as anything even near a production car. The first real car on the list, the Dodge Viper ACR did a 7:12:13 in 2010. Lexus LFA Nurburgring package did a 7:14.64, and a Corvette C6 ZR1 did a 7:19:63 in 2011. The quickest Nissan has claimed for the GT-R was a 7:19.1 or 7:18.6?, but they had traffic which slowed the car about 1/2 a second.

NISMO speculation from Top Speed

"Nurburgring records", have to be put in quotes when people play with the numbers that much. No one around to see how "stock" any of those production cars actually are. If they are done under independent observers, under a real race condition where the cars are inspected, then there might but some real validity However the videos get played, the forums, blogs and magazines report them, so maybe unofficial is just fine.

Record Breaking 85mph ReFuel of Nissan GT-R - Fifth Gear

Now this is a bit different. In order to break a record of 142 miles covered in an hour with a production car, the team from Fifth Gear needed to be able to get some extra range out of a Nissan GT-R.

At 150 mph, the GT-R was going to get 8 mpg and would run out of fuel at 130 miles, so they came up with what they say is inspired by jet aircraft. When I was in the Navy, we did this same kind of thing, its called UnRep, or underway replenishment. To fuel the ship, or the car, the two vehicles come along side, a line or hose is sent across, and fuel is pumped.

This video shows their practice session, but no mentions if they managed to break the record. They also quote the car at 530 horsepower which is a 2012 model, the 2013 up is rated at 545 horsepower in the US. Check out the video below.

One of my favorite grassroots events is coming up May 4- May 11, the Brock Yates One Lap of America. Starting at Tire Rack in Indiana, the group of One Lappers travels 3,380 miles over the course of the 7 days.

Last year Nissan GT-R's came 1,2,3,7,and 8 out of the top 10 cars overall, with Leh Keen and Doug Wilks taking the top spot.

Eight second street car. Streetable car. Street car. This GT-R weighs in at 4150 lbs, and gets it done on the quarter mile, turning in a 8.89@159 mph pass. That is in 1320 feet it went 159 miles per hour. In what some cars take to hit 60 mph, it hit nearly 160 mph. No its not the fastest GT-R in the US, its not the first in the eights, but I will just about bet your street car doesn't go 8's. Check out the video below.

A few months back I did a photo shoot and interview with Jacob Leveton for PAS Magazine about the NISMO R32 Nissan Skyline GT-R's I imported under Show or Display.

One small error. You don't need to bring in every car though a Registered Importer, just any car not over 25 years, or not under Show or Display. If the car is newer than 21 years, and coming in under Show or Display, you need an ICI.

You’ve become a bit of a guru on getting a car imported legally. In general, what does it take to bring a car into the U.S.?

You’ll need to bring any car in through a Registered Importer, which can bring it up to current Federal standards, but there are a several agencies you will need to be aware of, as each has its own requirements.

How does the Show or Display exemption work?

If you can convince the NHTSA the car you're trying to import is historically- or technologically-significant and it agrees, you can bring it in for “show or display” purposes, drive it on public roads for up to 2,500 miles per year, etc. There are many rules around it too; production numbers typically have to be fewer than 500 produced. It’s basically referred to as a Bill Gates / Paul Allen rule. Those guys pushed the law through to make the Porsche 959 legal for import. If you want to get a law like this changed, you may need Bill Gates and Paul Allen money.

Other cars on the “Show or Display” exemption list include: the McLaren F1, Bugatti EB110, Ford RS200, BMW Z1, Mercedes CLK-GTR Roadster and Lamborghini Diablo GT. Each had to be requested by someone who wanted to bring the car into the US, and get it approved. If it’s less than 21 years old, still needs to meet emissions regulations, so it needs to be brought in by an ICI (Independent Commercial Importer) who will have to bring the car up to emissions specs.
