			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&rsquo;s nearly the time of year when a multitude of enthusiastic runners hit the streets to take part in the annual London Marathon. The marathon is now such a well known part of the sporting schedule that many people would undoubtedly be surprised to learn that the first ever London Marathon was organised in 1981. </p>
<p>The notion for the race came from two ex-athletes, Chris Brasher and John Disley. Chris Brasher is famed for his input as pace-maker in the first four minute mile, and for gaining a gold medal in the Olympic steeplechase in 1956. Pictures show him participating whilst wearing huge glasses &ndash; perhaps if he was alive and participating today he would choose much safer contact lenses or Laser eye surgery! </p>
<p>In any case, the two athletes had heard people enthusing about the New York Marathon, and wanted to find out what was so special about it, so they made a commitment to enter themselves for the marathon the following year. The event had such a huge impact on them and when they returned to England, they decided to investigate whether it would be possible to put on a similar event in London.   </p>
<p>Through newspaper contacts a discussion was organised with representatives from all the organisations which would have to approve the idea if it was to happen. It seems that, once a workable route had been suggested, agreement was reached fairly quickly and the inaugural London Marathon took place in March 1981. For that first race, approximately 20,000 people completed an application to take part, and around 7,700 were accepted of which 6,255 actually completed the race.</p>
<p>One of the stipulations when suggestions for the event were drawn up was that no public funds should be utilised to pay for the expense of organising the event, so sponsorship was required to ensure that all expenses could be met. The organisers were fortunate with the timing, as Gillette had just ended their cricket sponsorship and were searching for a new sporting sponsorship deal. That first race was sponsored to the princely sum of £75,000. Since then, sponsors have changed a number of times with the current sponsors Virgin taking over from Flora in 2010 having signed up to a five year sponsorship deal.                   </p>
<p>The event route has changed little during the last thirty years. The only real change from the first few years is that the race now concludes in The Mall rather than on Westminster Bridge. There have been a couple of small changes, but apart from that it has continued to remain much the same ever since the very first race. But on the other hand, technology has become ever more capable since then. Precision timing utilising a beam similar to that given out by a Laser eye gives exact timings for the elite runners as they reach the finishing line and break the beam. Ever increasing television coverage from every conceivable angle means that no viewer needs to miss anything, though after many hours of looking at a multitude of runners storming or staggering past, you may reach the point when you feel that you are a candidate for corrective glasses or <a href="http://www.lasereyesearch.co.uk/" target='_blank'>Laser eye surgery</a> to get your eyes focusing properly again!     </p>
<p>Anyone watching the race will know only too well that many of the runners are taking part in the race to make money for their favourite charity. Three quarters of those who participate do so to raise money and it is estimated that over five hundred million pounds has been raised for good causes during the last thirty years. Some charities are members of a scheme via which they are guaranteed a specified number of places in the marathon, and they can then award them to their supporters in exchange for a specific amount of sponsorship income.                </p>
<p>The race provides some great publicity for London itself as so many viewers all over the world watch on their television sets whilst the runners go past well known London landmarks including the Cutty Sark, Tower Bridge, Canary Wharf, Parliament Square and Buckingham Palace. It sometimes seems a pity that the event can&rsquo;t be held to coincide with some other big London happening &ndash; perhaps combine it with a huge firework display and beams of light shooting across the sky from <a href="http://www.lasereyesearch.co.uk/" target='_blank'>Laser eye</a> equipment. Who knows if something along those lines will take place sometime in 2012 during the Olympic Games though?</p>
<p>As much as anything though, the event is about the thousands of entrants. Of course, there are the outstanding athletes who do the marathon as a proper world class race, but the huge majority are just ordinary people who decide to see if they can run just over twenty-six miles in order to help others. Anyone who has seen the event will recall only too well the variety of costumes, the selection of charities splashed across clothing and the joyous camaraderie shown by all of the runners and by the crowds along the route.
