On Saturday, December 16, the gameday excitement kicks off early at the Coca-Cola Fan Fest, where interactive games, face painting, and a chance to meet your favorite team mascots await in the Silver Lot outside Independence Stadium. Visitors coming from the east or west should be warned there is a major construction project along I-20 through Bossier City. The good news is that the project is progressing well and on-schedule. In fact, many drivers are finding there is not a significant delay associated with the construction zone. That means I-20 is still a viable way to get to the Aquarium. If drivers prefer to go around and use I-220 to get to the Aquarium, they should exit on North Market Street and take that into Downtown Shreveport.

Erin Buchanan, Public Information Officer, DOTD, says construction is progressing well. Phase 1 is almost complete, and in about a month, phase 2 will commence. In phase 2, traffic will move to the outside (right) lanes, and the major reconstruction work will begin with the removal and replacement of the inside (left) lanes. Motorists should also expect to see the orange cones and barrels replaced with concrete barricades to ensure traffic isn’t crossing over into lanes that are actively under construction.

Traffic impacts in general are not producing significant delays for those who are choosing to travel through the work zone. DOTD is still encouraging everyone to pay attention to what’s ahead of them, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, and drive responsibly through the project area.

Dedicated individuals are tirelessly working to enhance I-20, benefiting both our local residents and visitors. Witnessing the ongoing progress and improvements in our city brings us great joy!

DOTD advises that the safety of our locals, travelers, and construction workers are a top priority during this time of rebuilding our roads in Shreveport-Bossier. Drivers should pay attention to signs and be prepared to encounter work zones, stopped vehicles, and make smart decisions while they are behind the wheel. The event highlights Shreveport-Bossier’s culinary scene, just a three-hour drive from Dallas. It’s more than just food; it’s a driving force in our culture. “Louisiana Goes Lone Star” will inspire travel and give Dallas a taste of Northwest Louisiana.”

Visit Shreveport-Bossier is highlighting another local legend of a restaurant this week. If you love fresh, warm tortillas with honey, salsa, and EZ-squeeze butter, you know this is going – Posados Café!

A family favorite in Bossier City since 1996, Posados Café is located across the street from Heart of Bossier shopping center on the Old Minden exit off I20. This is one of the many local favorites who have been affected by the ongoing construction project that is set to last 2 and a half years. Posado’s Café has seen a decline in their lunch and dinner attendance since the project started. Restaurants rely greatly on the support of the community during times like these.

They have culinary specials all week long! Last week it was Chicken Fajita Wednesday for $13.99 and Enchilada Thursday for $8.99! Not to mention, every week is Taco Tuesday at Posados Café, of course. Follow the official Posados Facebook page for information about their food offerings!

To avoid I-20 construction and still get to Posados Café, here are a few alternate routes:

1. Southbound:  Benton Road exit from I-220 and go SB toward Barksdale Blvd/Hwy 72. The restaurant will be on the left at the intersection.

2. Northbound: Take Texas Avenue downtown and go NB over the Texas Street bridge. Take a right onto Traffic Street. Turn left onto Barksdale heading NB. The restaurant is on the left.

Nestled in Louisiana’s picturesque countryside lies an unassuming gem, the Heritage and Harvest Tour, held annually in the fall. This event invites both locals and visitors to embark on a journey through time, exploring the rich history and vibrant culture of the region. A Scenic Beginning

The Heritage and Harvest Tour kicks off on Highway 3049, just north of Shreveport. Travelers can easily follow the tour route by keeping an eye out for the distinctive heritage tour signs. The communities along this route include Dixie, Belcher, Gilliam, Hosston, Mira and Ida. This historic tour is part of the Boom or Bust Byway, a road trip aficionado’s dream come true, spanning 136 miles across four parishes in North Louisiana – Caddo, Bossier, Webster and Claiborne.

A highlight of this year’s tour was the dedication of a community mural. The mural, lovingly crafted by local artist Diane Long, graces the wall of the Shreve Memorial Library in Gilliam. The people of Shreveport-Bossier have been feeling it lately with the ongoing construction on I-20. Some people more than others – especially local restaurants near the construction zones. This week, Notini’s Italian Restaurant in Bossier City, off the Airline Drive exit, is in the spotlight.

Visit Shreveport-Bossier had the pleasure of visiting their restaurant, and they mentioned the construction has affected their routine lunch crowd. Locals and visitors can support this Bossier staple by stopping by and checking out their daily specials.

On Monday nights, they have a lasagna dinner special for $11.99. If you stop by on Wednesday, they have all-you-can-eat spaghetti with UNLIMITED garlic bread for $4.99 – that’s the dream right there. Notini’s also has lunch specials every day of the week. This week, they have a 1/2 Stan’s sub that comes with chips, combo salad, and a drink, all for $8.99. It’s worth mentioning, this is the perfect place to stop for lunch if you are on a time crunch. With their always helpful staff, they had lunch orders out quickly.

With one look around, it’s obvious why this place is a Bossier City classic. In 2019, Notini’s almost closed its doors. The Shreveport-Bossier community was hit hard with this information. Thankfully, local entrepreneurs intervened, and they were able to keep the tradition that is a gallon bucket of Notini’s spaghetti alive.

To avoid I-20 construction and still get to Notini’s, here are a few alternate routes:

•Southbound:  Airline Drive exit from I-220 and go SB toward Texas/Hwy 80.  The restaurant will be on the right just before the big intersection.

•Northbound: Take Airline Drive NB and go through Texas St. intersection.  Restaurant is on the left.

•Eastbound from Downtown Shreveport:  Exit I-20 at Spring Street and take Texas St to Airline Drive intersection and turn left.  Will be on the left.

•Westbound from Haughton area:  Take E. Texas/Highway 80 westbound and turn right at Airline Drive.,  Will be on the left.  If coming on I-20, exit at I-220 and then get on E. Texas/Highway 80 WB.

The Essence of Hispanic Identity

Being Hispanic is more than just a label; it’s a vibrant tapestry of culture, history, and identity that flows through our veins like a river of shared memories and traditions. It’s the rhythm of salsa, cumbia, banda and folkloric music that quickens our hearts, the rich flavors of Abuela’s cooking that warm our souls, and the colorful threads of our heritage that weave a unique story. Being Hispanic means embracing a deep sense of family, where gatherings are not just occasions but celebrations of love and unity. It’s the resilience passed down from generations who have faced adversity with unwavering strength, reminding us that our roots are firmly planted in the soil of determination. It’s the language that connects us to our ancestors, allowing us to carry their voices forward. Being Hispanic is a celebration of diversity within our community, a reminder that we are bound not just by blood, but by the shared dreams and aspirations of a people who have carved their mark on history. It’s a mosaic of emotions, from pride to nostalgia, that define our essence and make us who we are. And so, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the contributions and achievements of Hispanic individuals and communities that have enriched the cultural fabric of the United States.

The Historical Tapestry of Hispanic Growth in NWLA

My journey in Shreveport, Louisiana began in 2002, a time when glimpses of fellow Hispanics were rare, primarily confined to my ESL class at Creswell Elementary or visits to Nicky’s, one of the few Hispanic-owned restaurants in the area. The language barrier was my first formidable challenge, as communicating with classmates, teachers, and strangers often felt like an intricate game of charades, a skill I had yet to master. This reality echoes the experiences of countless Hispanics across the United States.

Fast forward to 2007, Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath saw an influx of people from New Orleans to Northwest Louisiana, including numerous Hispanic families who chose to make Shreveport, Bossier, and Haughton their home. By then, the Latino population had grown substantially, leading to the emergence of resources like VITA Latina Magazine, which served as a vital link for Spanish-speaking communities, guiding them to essential services and products.

Since those early days, the Hispanic population has flourished exponentially. This growth is evident in the thriving Latino businesses rooted in our region. We now boast over 25 churches offering services in Spanish, a testament to our community’s deepening roots. In various fields, from medicine to law, accounting to entrepreneurship, Hispanics have risen to the top of their professions. New Mexican restaurants and taquerias continue to open, a testament to our community’s collective spirit of growth and support. Many of these new ventures trace their origins to former employees of pioneers like Mr. Elias Sifuentes of Nicky’s Mexican Restaurant and Mr. Pancho of Trejos.

We celebrate companies like PPT or M&N Concrete, the builders, laborers, roofers, and masons who have secured major contracts, contributing to the region’s infrastructure and fostering opportunities for new businesses. What’s truly remarkable is that this progress has been accomplished by the first significant generation of Hispanics to establish deep roots in our region. We are now nurturing the second generation of young adults, poised to graduate from high school, carrying forward the legacy of their heritage.

It’s worth noting that the rich tapestry of our Hispanic population extends beyond Mexican heritage. We proudly encompass a significant presence of individuals with Honduran, Salvadoran, and Nicaraguan roots, alongside families hailing from Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. Our community’s diversity is a testament to the vibrant mosaic of cultures and traditions that enrich our Hispanic heritage.

Hispanic Heritage Month 2023

This year, we come together in Shreveport-Bossier to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of exciting events that pay homage to our vibrant culture and community.

We kick off the season by welcoming Bossier City’s first-ever Hispanic Health Clinic, ensuring accessible healthcare services for our underserved Hispanic community, complete with Spanish-speaking professionals and affordable prices.

From September 15th to 17th, the aroma of exquisite Hispanic cuisine fills our restaurants, offering special dishes and drink specials at venues like Ki’ Mexico, El Potrillo, Taqueria San Miguel, El Mariachi, Taqueria Mi Palmar, and El Novillo, among many others where flavors come alive, and the spirit of Viva La Revolucion thrives.

On September 30th, HHA (Hispanic Heritage Association) collaborates with Broadmoor Baptist Church to host the Hispanic Information Fair. Over 30 local vendors will provide information in Spanish, empowering our local population. The event also features seminars on finance, homeownership, and immigration.

Mark your calendars for October 14th when we gather at the Shreveport Aquarium for the Hispanic Heritage Festival, an event organized by the Hispanic Heritage Association of NWLA. Here, you’ll savor dishes from six different countries, enjoy live music and captivating performances, and witness the presentation of scholarships benefiting young adults pursuing higher education in Shreveport-Bossier.

Get ready for an incredible celebration at the State Fair of Louisiana’s Latino Day, a growing event that has become the region’s largest Latino gathering. Stay tuned for more details about this year’s festivities, featuring top musical acts like La Reunion Norteña, La Tropa Vallenata, Grupo Reyado, and DJ Lashes, promising a day filled with captivating music and dance that will touch your heart. Alongside these performances, expect to be delighted by folkloric dance artists and an array of vendors serving the Hispanic community, enhancing the overall experience. Lastly, on November 4th, HHA presents its inaugural Day of the Dead Festival, a special celebration deeply rooted in Mexican and Spanish traditions, honoring those who have come before us. The event will feature a Catrina contest, an Altar display contest, mariachi performances, Aztec dancers, and a magnificent display of 12-ft Catrinas. This free-to-enter event will be held at Festival Plaza in Downtown Shreveport.

In conclusion, Hispanic Heritage Month in Shreveport-Bossier is a time of celebration, reflection, and unity, highlighting the extraordinary contributions of our Hispanic community to the region’s cultural tapestry. All Shreveport-Bossier locals have surely heard by now that I-20 in Bossier City will be under long-term reconstruction. This is one of those projects that nobody wants to happen, but we know the payoff will be much greater than the sacrifice. Visit Shreveport-Bossier will be focusing on local businesses affected during the 2-year process that will need your support.

Visit Shreveport-Bossier will be sharing alternate routes to get to businesses in areas of town such as Flying Heart Brewing & Pub in the East Bank District, Texas Roadhouse and the newly opened Habacu’s off on Old Minden Road, and many more.

Over the next 2 years, I-20 from Hamilton Road to Industrial Drive will be down to one lane. Workers will be tearing out the original pavement from the 1960’s and rebuilding the roads from the inside out. These long-term lane closures will be both Eastbound and Westbound, so each direction will be down to one lane only.

It’s no secret that this will disrupt daily driving routines, but it’s a great opportunity for everyone to be mindful of small businesses near the interstate that will be affected. It is critical that community members and travelers support local businesses during this construction project which will ultimately have a positive economic impact on Shreveport-Bossier when finished.

About 60,000 – 90,000 cars drive on I-20 every day – that’s travelers AND locals. Visit Shreveport-Bossier will be periodically posting alternate routes and highlighting our local hot spots that are throughout the area of construction that will need your continued support. Visit Shreveport-Bossier had the chance to visit Mr. Morell at his dairy farm located at 4743 Highway 169, Mooringsport, LA 71060, which happens to be the only dairy farm in Bossier, Caddo, and De Soto parishes. My only advice is to MOOve on over there and taste the best chocolate milk of your life! Which, contrary to popular belief, does not come from just the brown cows.

Farmer Randy Morell, and his wife, Ann Morell, built this farm from scratch. Upon first impression, this may seem like a small quaint farm. Now, how dairy you make that assumption? One look around and you’ll see this is a full blown operation. When you pull up, if you’re lucky, you might be greeted with some of the sweetest baby cows who’ve just graced the world with their presence (one week ago!). The Jersey cows at Morell farms feed and grow for around 22 months before they can produce delicious milk to be processed into whole milk, chocolate milk, cream, or butter.

While touring the Dairy Farm, Mr. Morell will guide you into his hand-built facilities where visitors will get their first lesson in milk processing. Did you know that milk comes out of the cow at approximately 102 degrees Fahrenheit? It is then sent to the cooler where it is immediately chilled to around 36 degrees. It is then heated up again to 145 degrees and held there for about 30 minutes. This is just one thing that sets Morell Dairy Farm’s local milk aside from big box stores is that they use standard pasteurization, not flash pasteurization. Flash pasteurization denatures some of the proteins in milk which can make milk difficult to digest. Standard pasteurization allows them to preserve vitamins and retain a higher percentage of protein in their milk. After being heated up again for 30 minutes, the milk is cooled down to less than 45 degrees and is finally ready to be packaged by Mr. Morell himself.

Randy Morell delivers his milk on a daily basis to various locations around Shreveport-Bossier. Rhino Coffee and Dripp Donut in Downtown Shreveport are just two of the many places you can find their quality milk. If you’re from Northwest Louisiana, you’ve probably heard of Thrifty Liquor and Cuban Liquor’s eggnog daiquiris! The year is 2023 and we’re celebrating our 53rd Annual Pride Month, nationally. From one of the most notable riots in history at the Stonewall Inn to the present day, we’ve been celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride since 1970; United States President Bill Clinton dubbed June “Gay & Lesbian Pride Month” in 1999. 

So what is Pride all about and why a whole month? Well, we’re glad you asked and we would never leave you without information! Pride Month specifically is set aside as a time to acknowledge the struggle for civil rights by members of the LGBTQ+ community and the ongoing pursuit of justice and equal treatment under the law while also celebrating all of the accomplishments and contributions of our friends, family and affiliates within the community locally, regionally, nationally and globally.

Fun Fact: Did you know that in May of 2022, Shreveport’s City Council voted to make June Shreveport’s official Pride Month? 

So, now that you’re up to speed, let’s talk about Pride Month celebrations in Shreveport-Bossier! Here’s how you can get in on the fun:

Drag Shows

If you’re familiar with our local performance scene you’re aware that from Friday to Saturday we are delighted with stunning drag nights from Korner Lounge and Central Station to some of our newest pop-up drag performance venues Bear’s on Fairfield and Ernie’s. To enter these spaces you must be 21+ with a valid ID to get in on the fun. Meet these requirements and you are dancing the night away as performers work the floor for tips and applause in intricate, often multi-layered costumes and impressive towering wigs.
