Our Little Girl Turns 1 today!

You’re my precious little angel. You are my truest of true loves. You’re only going to be a baby once, but you’ll always be my baby girl.

One full year has passed since the journey began. Whew! It really does go by in a flash. From her incredible <a href="http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2007/11/12/how-to-have-a-3-minute-baby-a-true-story-about-a-rapid-and-easy-natural-labor-and-birth/"title="21st Century Parenting - How to Have a 3 Minute Baby" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2007/11/12/how-to-have-a-3-minute-baby-a-true-story-about-a-rapid-and-easy-natural-labor-and-birth/');">birth story to where we are today, I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. The incredible speed with which time passes after the birth of a child is offset by those times when she is crying, screaming, and inconsolable. That’s when time stands still. I love everything about this little girl, even those times when she is crying, screaming, and inconsolable.

Part of the festivities include a portrait of her in a traditional Korean hanbok. The dress she is wearing in the photo is one that is worn on a girl’s first birthday. You can see more photos of Twilli in <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/21stcenturydad/sets/72157606524471755/"title="21st Century Dad on Flickr" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.flickr.com/photos/21stcenturydad/sets/72157606524471755/');">my Flickr photostream.

A New Father and a New Man

I often say that I was born on August 7th, 2007 too. The birth of your first child changes you forever. My daughter’s role as my spiritual advisor continues to expand. No matter what happened in my past or what the crisis du jour is, my daughter is there for me as a reminder of how precious life is. She is the reason I want to be the best dad and the best person I can be.

Others Who Share a Birthday With Twilli

As a die-hard hockey fan, I’m pleased to know <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_crosby"title="Wikipedia entry on Sidney Crosby" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_crosby');">Sidney Crosby shares a birthday with my little one. He was born on 8/7/87, hence, he wears jersey number 87. Today is a significant milestone birthday for Mr. Crosby too. Twilli will enjoy some juice in a sippy cup. Sid the Kid barely missed drinking form Lord Stanley’s Cup this past spring. Today, he is raising a pint or two, or three or four or five…

Twilli has an affinity for metal objects. They hold her attention and sometimes find their way into her mouth. She likes metal. <a href="http://www.screamforme.com/"title="Bruce Dickinson" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.screamforme.com/');">Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, also celebrates today. His impressive vocal range earned him the nickname “Air Raid Siren.” We get to hear our little air raid siren when daddy extracts inedible objects from her mouth or when the magic boobies are not there when she wants them.

<a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/ernestobrown.jpg"title="Ernesto Brown" target="_self" >Ernesto Brown, a reader in Miami, has a daughter who shares a birthday with our Twilli. Happy birthday to you too.

You can take great photos today, with the camera you own right now.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/21stcenturydad/2729381248/"title="Twilli" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.flickr.com/photos/21stcenturydad/2729381248/');">Photography literally means, “writing with light.” The quality of the light dictates the quality of your photograph more than the camera you are using. Finding great light will improve the quality of your photographs more than buying a new camera.

Finding the Light

One of the best locations for a photograph is next to a window, preferably one facing the north. Professional photographers spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on specialized lighting equipment to duplicate this quality of light in the studio. You can have it for free.

I am a big fan of <a href="http://strobist.blogspot.com"title="Strobist - Learn How To LIght" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://strobist.blogspot.com');">using flash creatively, but knowing how to find great light is just as important as knowing how to create it. Besides, if you know how to find good light, you can use any camera.

What Settings Do I Use?

The best part about using window light is, you can fire away in PhD Mode, or “Push Here Dummy.” Just be sure to turn off the flash. You’re trying to avoid the harsh, unflattering look of direct flash here. There may be enough ambient light for the camera to decide flash isn’t necessary. Consult your camera’s manual to find out how to turn it off.

During the day, the light outside your house is several times brighter than the light inside. Don’t put your subject between the window and the camera, unless of course, you want a silhouette. Your camera may also have a “backlight” setting that helps you out in a situation like this.

I used my point-and-shoot camera in auto mode to take the photos you see here. I did a little tweaking in Photoshop, but with a little practice, you can get great images right out of the camera. You don’t have to plant your child right in front of the window. Open up those drapes or blinds and let the light come in. You’ll end up with a large and directional source of light that gives shape and definition.

A Few More Tips

Your toddler is a fast little bugger. How many times have you missed the shot due to that darn shutter lag that point-and-shoot cameras still have? It’s gotten better, but there’s still a little lag time. It feels even longer if you’ve ever had the pleasure of <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/01/29/improve-your-family-photos-21st-century-dad-style/"title="Improve Your Photos 21st Century Dad Style" target="_self" >using a DSLR.

A tried-and-true method is to do a half-press of the shutter to let the camera’s auto-focus lock on. This will take a half a second or so. When your little one is in the frame, press the shutter all the way down. This should increase the number of keepers you get. Don’t worry about perfect focus. Your point-and-shoot camera has some fudge factor here.

You can Google “the rule of thirds,” for the long explanation. The short version goes like this: don’t put your subject dead-center in the frame. A slightly off-center composition makes for a more compelling photograph.

Get down on the floor! People and children look their best when the film plane (or sensor plane) is perpendicular to the floor. This works for pet pictures too. Standing up and shooting down distors perspective and makes heads loom large. Full body length portraits are actually taken with the camera at waist level.

Search Engine Traffic

Google Analytics is a valuable source of information and fascination. One of the facts you can glean is what keyword searches brought visitors to your site. The usual suspects like “dad blog” and “babies in the 21st century” show up regularly. This is the craziest search term that brought a visitor:

“Problems digesting corn.”

Whoever it was stuck around for over a half-hour and visited 12 pages.

RSS Feed is Now Ad-Free

If you get your 21st Century Dad fix through your feed reader, this is hardly news to you. The change has been in effect for a while now.

It finally dawned on me to subscribe to my own RSS feed. I can’t even say with 100% certainty that the <a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/21stCenturyDad"onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://feeds.feedburner.com/21stCenturyDad');" rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://feeds.feedburner.com/21stCenturyDad');">RSS Feed is ad-free. I haven’t seen it with my own eyes. I put faith in my act of unchecking the appropriate box on Feedburner’s control panel.

Ads have their place. Ads fill a need (like the hole in my wallet left by diapers). I don’t need to blast my readers with ads on the site and in the RSS feed. Part of the fun is to see what kinds of ads are served up. AdSense seems to think my readers want to know about mail-order brides whenever I write about biracial issues. I also see ads for 21st Century Insurance.

Now that my RSS Feed is ad-free, it’s just like having TiVO for your favorite blog. You can skip the commercials.

I just realized that I exceeded 100 posts to this blog while this one languished in its incomplete state in my Drafts folder. What blogger has the attention span to write 100 facts about themselves in one sitting? I made this list over time, and had forgotten about it.

Doing a “Top 100″ or a “100 things about me” list is pretty common for the 100th post. I’ve already passed 114 posts. Just pretend that 15 of my posts are utter crap and not worth reading.

Okay, there are a few gems in this list, but you’re going to have to click through to read them. I’m not going to blast the front page with 1634 words. Yes, that means you too <a href="http://www.buddhabelle.com/"title="Buddha Belle ...reaching for the Nirvana of motherhood" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.buddhabelle.com/');">JoJo. I know you never click on “Read the rest of this entry” when you’re blog-hopping, but this is too good to pass up.

I love pasta. When I make pasta, I don’t stop eating until it disappears.

I love sushi. I don’t stop eating until it disappears.

I taught myself how to cook when I was a teenager.

When I was 11 or 12, I was really bored and made a Boston creme pie from scratch.

I only eat eggs scrambled, in an omelette, as part of a breakfast sandwich, or as an ingredient in baking.

But I still know how to make the perfect hard boiled egg.

I never liked Korean food.

One time, my parents smuggled Burger King into a Korean restaurant and made me eat it under the table.

I was always messing with my dad’s cameras as a little boy. I eventually took a photography class in high school, learned how to shoot, develop, and print my own B&W pictures.

I discovered the guitar and photography took a backseat for a long time.

In high school, I discovered hair metal. Then I discovered metal metal, like Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, and Iron Maiden.

My favorite band for the longest time was Led Zeppelin. When I first heard Dream Theater, it was all over. I even had to get a tattoo and named one of my cats after the drummer.

I used to work at a music store. I hated it. I quit playing guitar while I worked there. Picked it back up a few years later.

Mary-Chapin Carpenter and Patsy Cline are my favorite female country singers. They won’t make the Maxim Top 100 (or the top 10,000 for that matter), proving that I really like country music and I’m not just in it for the babes.

I love country music, especially the old stuff.

I play a mean blues guitar, and thus, love that genre too.

I can’t play jazz very well, but I enjoy listening to it.

Best concert ever: Tie. Every Dream Theater concert I’ve been to.

Other great concerts I’ve been to: Guns’n’Roses and Soundgarden, New Year’s Eve 1991, 28th row; Metallica, 5th “layer” of people in the general admission section right by the stage;

When I was in 5th grade, I never admitted that I liked Madonna. All the guys said, “if you like Madonna, you’re gay. I listen to Motley Crue.” I was gay because I liked a woman and these guys were manly men because they liked a bunch of men dressed up like women?

Instruments I can make noise on that resembles music: guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, violin, cello, upright bass, saxophone, drums, recorder.

I love Broadway musicals. I’ve seen Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats.

The musical I’d most like to see is Chess.

My favorite movie of all time is The Sound of Music. I’ll never get sick of watching it.

I want to make play clothes for my children out of the old drapes in the governess’ bedroom.

The first two DVDs I ever bought were The Sound of Music and The Princess Bride.

I’ve never purchased a TV in my life, yet I’ve had as many as 5 in my possession at once.

I’d rather wait to buy the Family Guy DVDs instead of watching the episodes on TV.

I have tattoos, all of which are invisible in business attire.

I joined the Zeta Psi fraternity in college.

I didn’t graduate from college, but not because I partied. I was burned out on school and felt like I was living someone else’s life.

I bought a digital camera so I could sell stuff on eBay. It rekindled my interest in photography.

I currently use a Nikon D80 with an assortment of lenses and lighting gear.

I am dying to do some shooting with my old Nikon film SLR to prove that I can do special effects without Photoshop.

As a child, I could speak Korean well enough to fill the communication needs of a 7 year old. That ability has been lost.. And replaced with the ability to speak Spanish well enough to get my ass kicked in Little Havana.

I had 2 Swedish girls as roommates once.

Oh wait. You’re reading a blog. You can take a bathroom break or grab another cold one from the fridge and pick up right where you left off. You can do it as often as you want. If you have a laptop, you don’t even have to miss the action. Take it with you into the bathroom and continue reading.

The easiest way to annoy me is to try and have a conversation with me from the other room. Talk to me face to face please.

I served as President of my Toastmasters club.

Diet Pepsi.

Guinness… At room temperature.

All dark beers should be enjoyed at room temperature.

I take my coffee with cream and sugar.

I like my scotch neat or with a little water. Brings out the complex bouquet of flavors.

Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.

Most of the time, I’m drinking water.

I’m a part-time vegetarian. The longest I went without eating meat was a 2 week stretch. I usually go a few days here and there.

It’s comforting to know that Guinness fits within a vegan lifestyle.

Reasons I won’t go vegan: cheese, butter, real dairy creamer for my coffee, gelato, a good Philly cheese steak from within the city’s boundaries, Texas BBQ, sushi, the orange chicken at Panda Express,

I prefer meat without bones. I make an exception for buffalo wings and the occasional plate of baby back ribs.

The spicier the better. Did you know that spicy food gives you an endorphin rush?

And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. A list of 100 things is a long list. We need a break at the midway point. Did you enjoy the halftime performance by Google AdSense?

I can write and draw with both hands simultaneously in mirror image.

I was born left-handed, but my parents held on to just enough of their traditional Korean values to “correct it.”

My sister writes with her left hand, but she does everything else right-handed.

I play basketball left-handed, but shoot right-handed.

I play golf right handed… And very poorly.

I can play tennis equally bad left handed as I do right handed.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to do something left-handed OK and be kick-ass at it right handed so I can use that line from the movie, The Princess Bride.

I know enough about most sports to fake it during conversations about sports. Follow one sport closely enough (hockey) and you can pull it off.
My dream job would be as a starting goalie for an NHL team.

My realistic dream job would be photographer and blogger. The only change I have to make is to make money at doing those things.

I was on the varsity wrestling team in high school

Some of you already know that Portnoy has not been doing well. At the vet’s recommendation, we were planning to have him put down after a few days, so we could say our goodbyes. Fortunately, he wasn’t in pain, just feeling “blah” all the time due to anemia. I was afraid that I would find him curled up in a dark and quiet corner of our house. My fears were confirmed on Tuesday.

Portnoy and his litter mates were abandoned at a construction site. One of our friends took them in and found new homes for each of them. Portnoy found his way into our home and our hearts in November of 2006.

Portnoy is named after Mike Portnoy, the drummer from <a href="http://www.dreamtheater.net"title="Dream Theater - The Official Site" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.dreamtheater.net');">Dream Theater. I have been a fan of the band for over 15 years, having seen them in concert multiple times. I have even met Portnoy’s namesake on a few occasions. He was always friendly and outgoing, just like the cat named after one of progressive rock’s greatest drummers.

Shortly after bringing Portnoy home, we arranged for a checkup with the vet. This is when we learned that he has the feline leukemia virus (FeLV). At first, we were admonished for taking such a cat in, but the vet fell in love with him too. We were told that his odds of surviving the first year were slim. He lived to be almost two years old.

Portnoy loved to groom himself

Kittens are fast little buggers. They’re hard to catch. He seemed to teleport from one part of the room to another, so we called him “Teleportnoy.” We started appending names and words with “noy.”

While Renee was pregnant, I called her “Pregnoy.”

When Twilli would go on her serial breastfeeding binges, we’d call her the “Nursenoy.”

Portnoy started off as the smallest of the three cats, but grew to be quite large. Sometimes we called him “Biggernoy.”

One question we often got was, “does he complain a lot?” Most people know the title of the Philip Roth novel, “Portnoy’s Complaint,” but don’t know the story. It’s one of those quips that get diluted with repetition, just like the E.T. references I endured all through grade school. Those who actually know the story got a hearty laugh when I said, “no, he doesn’t complain, but we were sure to get him neutered.”

This is especially difficult for me since Portnoy is the first cat I’ve known since he was a little kitten. I never had pets growing up, but got introduced to James and Boo when I met Renee. I call them my “step-cats.”

Renee thought a kitten might allow Boo to call upon her maternal instincts. Instead, James took on the parent/mentor role with Portnoy and they became best buddies. James and Portnoy slept at the foot of our bed every night.

Portnoy enjoys his nap.

Portnoy will be missed. He was such a great cat.

Portnoy’s Complaint

I took Portnoy to the vet earlier this week and the end is near. The feline leukemia virus has ravaged his body. He has already beaten the odds by living nearly 2 years with the disease. We thought we were in the clear when he grew to be the largest cat in the house. Now he has lost nearly half his body weight.

I was really hoping he’d stick around. I always thought that when Twilli starts talking more, she’d try to say his name and end up mispronouncing it “Porno” or “Po-Po.”

The Busy Dad Blog

When I first found <a href="http://www.busydadblog.com"title="The Busy Dad Blog" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com');">The Busy Dad Blog, I thought, “cool!” I’m not much of a drinker these days, but hanging out with certain people suddenly increases my alcohol tolerance consumption. I imagined Busy Dad could be one of those people to me.

So I start getting connected with Busy Dad. We follow each other on Twitter. I checked out his <a href="http://busydad.stumbleupon.com/about/"title="Busy Dad's StumbleUpon Page" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://busydad.stumbleupon.com/about/');">StumbleUpon page. I started to see even more similarities. This is getting eerie. He loves to cook, plays the guitar, and he likes country music too? How many Asian dudes like country music? I’m having a hard enough time finding anyone I know who likes country music. Everyone you’ve met who says,”I listen to everything,” usually follows up with, “…except country.”

It hit me the last time I was at Panda Express to get my Orange Chicken fix. I go back home to see the reference to the <a href="http://www.busydadblog.com/entries/the-little-things.html"title="The Busy Dad Blog - The Little Things" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com/entries/the-little-things.html');">double order of Orange Chicken on his site. Just hit CMD-F and type in “Panda Express” to find the reference. You PC folks can hit “CTRL-F.”

Last week, I made a flippant remark about The Busy Dad Blog being the Chinese knock-off of 21st Century Dad. Hmmm…

Digital photography is a passion of mine. Sometimes, things get a little too digital.
The NHL released the 2008-09 schedule. Although I am a long-time fan of the game, I still can’t get excited about the <a href="http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=368489"title="NHL Winter Classic" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.nhl.com/nhl/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=368489');">Winter Classic.
I’ve Been Tagged!

JoJo at <a href="http://www.buddhabelle.com/2008/07/15-years-in-nutshell.html"title="Buddha Belle ...reaching for the Nirvana of motherhood" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.buddhabelle.com/2008/07/15-years-in-nutshell.html');">BuddhaBelle has tagged me with this meme. When I hit her blog the other day, I could hear the rattle of the little metal ball and the swoosh swoosh of paint inside the can. In my long and illustrious blogging career, I’d only been tagged once before. If you see a Mongolian woman wearing a hoodie and carrying a backpack, tell her I said hi.

Think back on the last 15 years of your life. What would you tell someone that you hadn’t seen or talked to for 15 years? How would you sum up your life?

You get 10 bullet points. A list of 10 things to summarize you. At the end of your list, tag 5 more people and send on the love.

I found a ton of people I knew from high school on Facebook, but it’s still a great feeling to run into someone randomly while you’re out and about. It’s not such a great feeling when it’s at a place where the front windows have bright neon and are otherwise blacked out. I don’t know this from first-hand personal experience, but you get the idea.

15 years ago, I was in at the University of Maryland, living in the Zeta Psi fraternity house. We were the nerd frat, so I don’t have too many juicy stories.

I have a beautiful 11 month old baby girl and a 14 year old stepson. They’re the best! My daughter can say “dada dada babadaba dada abba.” She loves me and she loves Swedish pop music. She’s already cruisin’. Any day now…

I moved back home to Florida in ‘95.

I live in Davie now. Yeah, the redneck part. Yeah, you know, where all the buildings have a western theme. There’s even a rodeo arena. When I met my wife, she experienced total culture shock.

Yup. Cut off all my hair. It was down past the middle of my back before I gave it to Locks of Love.

I got totally hooked on Dream Theater. They’ve become my favorite band.

Yeah, I still play a little guitar. My stepson plays, and it’s been fun teaching him a few things.

I got into <a href="http://www.21stcenturydad.com/2008/01/29/improve-your-family-photos-21st-century-dad-style/"title="21st Century Dad - Photography" target="_self" >photography again. I bought a digital camera so I could sell stuff on eBay, but I started taking more pictures. I hated how it takes forever after pressing the shutter to get a picture and I missed the creative control I had with my old SLR film camera. I bought a Nikon D70 a while back. Now I have the D80 and I love it.

My wife and I started a <a href="http://www.dominant-paradigm.com"title="Dominant Paradigm, Inc." target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.dominant-paradigm.com');">web and graphic design business a couple years ago. We’re changing things up a little, choosing to work with only a few select clients, diversifying our efforts to include PowerPoint presentations, photography, and blogging.

My wife and I both have parenting blogs. I write 21stCenturyDad.com and she writes at <a href="http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com"title="21st Century Parenting" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com');">21stCenturyParenting.com.

She’s also <a href="http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2008/06/04/wears-the-baby-wednesday-new-twilli-pie-podegi-fun-in-the-sun/"title="21st Century Parenting - The Twilli Pie Podegi" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.21stcenturyparenting.com/2008/06/04/wears-the-baby-wednesday-new-twilli-pie-podegi-fun-in-the-sun/');">making baby carriers. She adapted a traditional Korean podegi, and incorporated some design features from the really pimped out Scandinavian style mei tais. Her unique selling proposition is to use vintage reclaimed fabric for the decorative parts. One of the best features is when she salvages old pants to make functional pockets. It’s so much better than using a stroller. She can multi-task like crazy and the baby loves it.

Twitter

I am an early adopter of many things. It’s a natural human desire to be the first person to do something. <a href="http://dadofdivas.blogspot.com/2008/06/who-are-rulers-of-your-kingdom.html"title="Dad of Divas" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://dadofdivas.blogspot.com/2008/06/who-are-rulers-of-your-kingdom.html');">Dad of Divas prompted me to join <a href="http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad"title="Follow me on Twitter - 21stCenturyDad" target="_self" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://twitter.com/21stcenturydad');">Twitter and I am having a blast. I have already found several of my regular blogger buddies and made some new friends. The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FDeluxe-Plastic-Toilet-200SLOW-000%2Fdp%2FB000H7YJCG%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dhi%26qid%3D1215155489%26sr%3D8-8&tag=21stcenturydad-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325"onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FDeluxe-Plastic-Toilet-200SLOW-000%2Fdp%2FB000H7YJCG%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dhi%26qid%3D1215155489%26sr%3D8-8&tag=21stcenturydad-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325');" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FDeluxe-Plastic-Toilet-200SLOW-000%2Fdp%2FB000H7YJCG%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dhi%26qid%3D1215155489%26sr%3D8-8&tag=21stcenturydad-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325');">toilet seat spurred a lot of comments and tweets. I thought for sure <a href="http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=gunecologist"title="Gerry Phillps - Gunecologist on YouTube." target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=gunecologist');">the hand-fart guy would be more popular. Pragmatism wins over sheer laughs.

New Friends, New Sites

Finding great new sites is a high and a letdown. You find something really cool, blog about it, then 20 people tell you it’s old news! It’s all part of that natural desire to be the first one to find something cool. <a href="http://discoveringdad.net/"title="Learning what it means to be a good Dad" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://discoveringdad.net/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://discoveringdad.net/');">Discovering Dad, <a href="http://www.joeprah.com/"title="Joeprah - Parenting with Humor" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://www.joeprah.com/');" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.joeprah.com/');">Joeprah, and <a href="http://www.busydadblog.com/"title="Parenting Without A Helmet" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://www.busydadblog.com/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com/');">The Busy Dad Blog would fall under the, “Guess what I found!!!! Oh….” category. But I’m cool. They’re following me on Twitter.

<a href="http://www.busydadblog.com/"title="Parenting Without A Helmet" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://www.busydadblog.com/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.busydadblog.com/');">The Busy Dad Blog

Jim Lin writes a fine blog. Like many dad bloggers, he started offering parenting tips. Then he transitioned to his personal accounts of fatherhood when he discovered that his posts about Fury were so wildly popular. (<a href="http://dadthing.com/"title="A Dad’s View On Parenting - And Mom’s Too Sometimes" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://dadthing.com');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://dadthing.com/');">Jared at DadThing.com made a similar shift on his blog.) We’re both Asian-American dudes with dad blogs. Our blogs are about the same age. We both like to cook. There are so many similarities, you’d think he was the Chinese knock-off of 21st Century Dad.

<a href="http://mamanuggle.com/"title="Every mom loves to (s)nuggle" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://mamanuggle.com/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://mamanuggle.com/');">Mama Nuggle

A special thanks to Jeremy at <a href="http://discoveringdad.net/"title="Learning what it means to be a good Dad" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://discoveringdad.net/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://discoveringdad.net/');">Discovering Dad for introducing me to her. <a href="http://mamanuggle.com/"title="Every mom loves to (s)nuggle" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://mamanuggle.com/');" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://mamanuggle.com/');">Mama Nuggle is brand new to blogging. You will definitely enjoy your visit to her site. I met them both on Twitter. Jeremy writes one of the best dad blogs around. His new site theme looks great. It’s a “magazine style” WordPress theme similar to what Tyler at <a href="http://www.buildingcamelot.com/"title="Building Camelot" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.buildingcamelot.com/');">Building Camelot has implemented. <a href="http://www.buildingcamelot.com/2008/07/09/please-pardon-the-mess-while-i-renovate/"title="Building Camelot - Please Pardon the Dust While I Renovate" target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.buildingcamelot.com/2008/07/09/please-pardon-the-mess-while-i-renovate/');">Tyler’s new blog design is awesome. Suddenly, the randomly changing header image on my blog doesn’t seem as cool anymore.

Old Friends, New Sites

I started reading <a href="http://frugaldad.com/"title="Making Frugal Cool Again" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://frugaldad.com/');" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://frugaldad.com/');">Frugal Dad before he was popular. Nya nya nya. <a href="http://frugaldad.com/"title="Making Frugal Cool Again" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/blogroll/http://frugaldad.com/');" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://frugaldad.com/');">Frugal Dad is on FIRE!!! He got 72,766 page views in June! He just launched the <a href="http://frugaldad.com/forums/"title="Frugal Dad Forums - A place for fellow frugal folks to gather and share money-saving tips." target="_blank" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://frugaldad.com/forums/');">Frugal Dad Forums earlier this week. Don’t fight your natural human urge to be an early adopter. Join the discussion and learn how to save money. In the last edition of <a href="http://frugaldad.com/2008/07/06/sunday-conversation-kids-and-money-matters-edition/"rel="bookmark" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://frugaldad.com/2008/07/06/sunday-conversation-kids-and-money-matters-edition/');">Sunday Conversation, Frugal Dad answered the question I submitted.

They update the list with new cities and transit systems regularly.

I may not have been an early adopter of Twitter, but <a href="http://www.reneeandelliott.com/2007/11/21/my-experience-with-public-transit-in-south-florida/"title="Permanent Link to My Experience With Public Transit in South Florida" rel="bookmark" onclick="javascript:urchinTracker('/outbound/article/http://www.reneeandelliott.com/2007/11/21/my-experience-with-public-transit-in-south-florida/');">I started riding the bus long before gas was even $3.00 a gallon.
