FEMINIST SOCIAL MEDIA PRAXIS

Jodi Nelson is a filmmaker, actor and musician. She is currently completing a PhD in Creative and Critical Practice at the University of Sussex. This week, we interviewed Jodi about her research project that explores contemporary feminism through digital networks.

re_activism:What do you think the 21st century feminist looks likes?

This is a very provocative question, because no one answer would be sufficient. It was exactly why I posed this question to my film subjects, both live and online. I thought with the pervasiveness of the online and social community crossing boarders, it would be an interesting topic to tackle. As we are a global society now, and social media allows us to communicate around the world 24/7, where those gender gaps, social morals and cultural biases would most definitely be at odds depending on who you asked and in which part of the world they hailed. This question allowed me to open up a broader topic surrounding feminism today, and specifically speak to those who are using online media as a means to express, share, comment and spread feminist agendas. Online activism is an endemic subject within itself with both pros and cons in this respect. But with the ideology of feminism being subject of a 21^stcentury movement, I thought it was a very necessary subject given our past movements in the first, second and third wave. I was curious as to what, if any, ‘wave’ we would be considered in now – or if we were in a wave at all? Specifically, I wanted to know what perceptions there were of a feminist today – and whether they [subjects] were one or not and how ideas were shaped?

Most all the subjects were very aware of the suffragettes and the third wave feminists. They knew who some of its champions were and what they stood for. But most of the subjects were keen to point out that a 21^st century feminist could be anybody. That feminists are no longer defined by race, gender or beliefs. Of course this is utopian thinking. But it was evident of a new generation of feminists being subjected to other points of views and different cultural and social agendas outside their own communities because of their connections within social media.

re_activism:Tell us a bit about your latest film and the production process.

‘What does a 21st Century Feminist Look Like?’ was an online film project, whereby I empowered my online communities in Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube to contribute to the narrative thread of the film. The fact that I was a ‘single girl in a virtual world’ designated the power of a single voice amongst a vast thread of people known and unknown who would contribute to a topic of my choosing.

The process was very interesting, difficult, insightful, frustrating and abundant all at the same time. Meaning, there was a giant learning curve in producing a project in this way and many unforeseen obstacles, but also celebratory moments. I had no budget, no crew and shot the film entirely using my Flip Camera and my mobile camera phone. Additionally, I re-framed recycled content found through sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Google to enable me to piece together a narrative from many collected sources.

When I began the project, I didn’t have a narrative. To the point, I had an idea, a focus, and a topic. But I had no roadmap for what those chapters were going to be. So instead, I decided I would start with questions posed to my live subjects and online community. Questions I myself had as a feminist. Curious beyond my own general knowledge, I didn’t want to weigh it down with academic rhetoric, so I sought out expert subjects at a local University in Tennessee, live subjects and online collaborators. I decided to create a sort of ‘road movie’ both in reality and online while I travelled across the United States. I wanted to vary my experience through place and time, while staying connected to my online communities as I travelled. Within each new city/state, question posed, call to action or online submission, a new idea was thrust forward – and before long I had over ten hours of footage and multiple angles in which I could explore in the postproduction process. What evolved was an expansive narrative that would eventually be the finished film.

Along with the film, I also kept a blog where I posted podcasts, as well as created a Facebook group and Twitter feed specifically for the film project. The podcasts evolved as the process moved forward. In this platform, I not only created content I felt might end up within the film itself, but would also be interesting to those who may be following the film’s journey as well. Then if they wanted to contribute, they would be able to do that by following, sharing, liking and commenting within the online community.

What was really interesting about the project, was that out of a chaotic, non-linear process, came a cohesive narrative that really captured what I wanted to say. I drove the narrative by posing questions and framing the discussion, but it was the community, which provided insight and direction. It was a creative process that at times was exhilarating, but at the same time could be quite frustrating, because I wasn’t in control of the process the entire time.

re_activism:How do you think digital media and social media praxis is shaping relationships within the feminist movement?

I feel the process of making this film project and case study puts its stamp on the shaping of these relationships between the subject of social media and feminism. In the past feminists had to be on the streets to make their voices heard. Now feminists can use social media to express, share and be heard. Who is listening? Well, that is another discussion altogether. But digital media does do its best to be a proponent and a voice for the unknown. Meaning, feminists no longer have to have large amounts of money, community, place or time to be able to express their views, or petition, or champion a cause. Social media praxis gives the subject and its new champions a venue or a vehicle, if you will, for feminists and non-feminists to be exposed to daily discourse of the rights and wrongs within their own locale, or around the world. People can choose to turn it on or turn it off, but one thing that is different than before, is that we are getting our information from our peers. Organizations can skew ideology for personal agenda and favor. In a system of distrust, social media allows communities to surround themselves with people they like and trust. Therefore, when news is shared, it is perhaps more valid, then listening to it on the radio or on the news because of where it came from.

I also think that social media is a perfect vehicle for women, who can be held back in public places. Specifically what comes to mind are the women in the Middle East whose social and religious culture might perhaps prohibit them from expressing ideas not held in public favor. There have been many blogs from that region where women are expressing ideas of feminism in the basic sense – just having access to school, jobs, and careers outside of their narrow social roles. This is a huge movement and these platforms have been an expansive agent for change. I think it will continue to grow and expand as more and more people take advantage of the social media platform and utilize it in creative ways.

re_activism:Is a plurality of voices on feminism now being heard online?

To a certain degree yes. I think for the countries where Internet is being monitored, or prohibited, then of course these feminists are not allowed to express their ideas in a public forum. That doesn’t mean they aren’t sharing it amongst their own communities. But in the public sphere so far as the social media is concerned, yes I do believe there are a plurality of voices being expressed and heard. I have found a tremendous variety of women and men who are feminists expressing their voices through a multitude of social media platforms. And while they don’t all agree to the specifics of what feminism is they do agree mostly in that it is about equality. It’s that measure of equality, however, that is a bit fuzzy. The traditional framework of feminism has been established through its earlier movements. But those images of the burning bras and anti-men movements unfortunately still shade the truth of what the feminist movement is about. Dr. Cajka, who speaks in my film, states that in the beginning women didn’t want to be chattel, they wanted to own property. Then they wanted control over their bodies, and birth control. Then it was equality amongst the sexes, job equality and equal pay. Today, we are still fighting for these same rights. And while some of these may be easier to accept and be obtained, there is still great inequality today in every place in the world. Sometimes it feels as if we have achieved everything feminism set out to conquer, but the truth is there will always be work for us to do. Social media provides a platform for the plurality of voices to express themselves and continue the feminist agenda. New ideologies, as well as, the trusted establishment are there side by side for everyone to see. It’s now about choice. And those choices are something that can be identified within a shared online community or influenced by a celebrity or even an everyday person posting on YouTube.

re_activism:What’s next for you, the project and digital feminism?

My research and case study in this sense are completed. But I want to move the film and its content into a more transmedia sphere. Meaning, there are many other media platforms that my film can exist upon. Such as a coloring book for youth, a feminist traveling e-book, a CD of feminist road songs, etc. The film is now out online for viewers to see. But I want to take that content and put it on a new platform, StoryPlanet, which will allow for a variety of narrative structures for the content to be housed. There is a lot of footage remaining that didn’t make it into the final cut of the film and I would like it to see the light of day. These clips can be further utilized to expand the discussion and be housed on media outside of its completed form and make new connections within the social media sphere.

I think beyond this initial film, the entire experience has given me the opportunity to see it is possible to create outside the traditional box. It has opened up possibilities within those cheap technologies available, online platform creation and collaboration with subjects outside of the realm of traditional documentary folds. The reflective aspect of the film and research has provided a much denser context of the subject than I had envisioned at the beginning of its conception. Knowing this has enabled me to expand my creative process and utilize other tools that are now available to me and to the online publics for further creative projects. And this is very exciting.

It is my hope that in a way, my film project not only inspires those who collaborated in its making, but that it becomes part of the collective discourse of online feminism, which continues to evolve and expand.

Documentary Release!

Reflective Practice – An Update

Hello online community. I’ve been knee-deep post production on the film Single Girl and while I’m going thru the process of this aspect of production, it enables me to reflect on the practice of the very nature of the making of the film.

First, I certainly couldn’t have made the film without you (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace -now defunct, and YouTube). My online communities have made a tremendous contribution to the making of the film. It’s interesting that when I sit back and look at all the content and coverage I’ve collected, shot, shared and received, that I now see what a tremendous amount of sifting I have to do in order to string together a narrative thread.

When I set out to make the film, I wanted to uncover what it means to be a 21st century feminist, somewhat of a personal journey, but also to put up a mirror in the collective online social stratosphere and see who or what would come back. Come to find out….a lot! Sifting through interview segments and subsequent video archival footage has given me so much content I could make several films! Which I’m truly grateful for.

For now, I have settled on a personal narrative. A first-person film where I am the subject of the film itself, but surrounded by all of the participants – YOU – who engaged with me during the production of the film, who shared, commented and created content in which I could use within the frame work of the film.

Every time I sit down to edit, new thoughts and new ideas emerge; as it’s really tough to sit down and focus on the task at hand, but thankfully ideas are starting to gel and a central theme is beginning to merge.

I’ll keep you posted on the film’s post production advances and thank you again for your support.

Women Who Travel Alone – Where in the World?…

I have been traveling over the course of three weeks from the States, to the UK and back again across country East to West Coast. Traveling is exhilerating, exciting and validating to me as a woman. We take for granted that we can travel alone to cities and countries alone without needing a guardian or chaperone.

It wasn’t too long ago that women traveling alone came with a stigma. The lonely, crazy, type that didn’t have a family to call her own and therefore, was forced to eat alone, sleep alone and walk alone.

But, as a feminist, and believing in all things equal – women have just as much right to travel wherever they please – even to foreign countries. Now, of course we have to take precautions, especially in areas where the men are not quite so evolved, or the culture prohibits women traveling alone. We have to take special precautions because we are susceptible to being easily overtaken physically, conned-emotionally or just simply easily frightened being a single female in situations where we aren’t familiar with our surroundings, or the culture, people and environment around us.

However, I wouldn’t change a thing. I deserve to see the world, experience all that it has to offer, meet and explore, eat and sleep under a different sky, try new foods, see beautiful architecture, museums and works of art. I deserve this just as much as a man, and I have the means and resources to do it. I don’t have to ask anyone.

As I travel, I encounter all kinds of situations where I’m reminded that even though I feel free, a bit rebellious, and having many guilty pleasures that only travel can bring; there are situations that women traveling alone should avoid all together. Safety first. Adventure second. Not to be a pessimist, or take all the fun out of being spontaneous – but best laid plans…. and all that.

I find that having researched where I’m going, having maps, phone numbers and directions help me not get into a sticky spot. I’m traveling to Istanbul in September, and I’m hoping my worldly travels will aid me in my first Muslim country visit. I’m very excited, but also really nervous because it’s more different than anything I’ve ever experienced before – but that’s the whole point!

Muslim Women Arrested in France for Wearing Face Veils in France

HUH? Yes, it’s true – read about it here! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13031397

What’s your thoughts on the subject? In the BBC report, the French police state they haven’t arrested the two women for wearing face veils, but rather for protesting without a permit…sounds fishy, but true and the fact that it has made international news, is indicative of it being a major issue of cultural rights, citizenship, religious freedom and civil rights/human rights.

What’s your thoughts on the matter? Here in the US, we can pretty much wear what we want. We don’t have a law that outlaws, fines or forces Muslim women who wear their face veils in public. Why has France passed this law? What do they hope to gain from this new movement? Safety? Public issue? Religious indoctrination? French pride? Government power? Is it a citizenship issue, as they state in this article? If these women are to be publicly humiliated, fined and forced to take citizenship courses – do they have to lose their own identity? Each French food? Completely disregard their heritage, culture, religion and personal freedoms – just to live in France? Take the POLL to see what the general consensus is.

Tattoos – Body Art or Mutilation?

“I shall now mention the way they mark themselves indelibly, each of them is so marked by their humor or disposition”. This quote, written by the naturalist Joseph Banks in 1769 in his written journal, was the first reference to the word ‘Tattoo” (or ‘Tatau’, which is Samoan).

Historically, tattooing has been practiced for centuries around the globe. Why then is it such a controversial issue today? Despite there being certain taboos on the subject, it is a widely practiced art.

“Tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status and rank, symbols of religious and spiritual devotion, decorations for bravery, sexual lures and marks of fertility, pledges of love, punishment, amulets and talismans, protection, and as the marks of outcasts, slaves and convicts. The symbolism and impact of tattoos varies in different places and cultures. Tattoos may show how a person feels about a relative (commonly mother/father or daughter/son) or about an unrelated person.” (Wikipedia)

I think in this context, tattoos secure their relevance in our society today, just as a painting, piece of music, theatre or film serves us spiritually and artistically. Once again, women, there is a great divide over who owns your body and who has the right to do with it as you please. Annoying, isn’t it?

As a tattoo lover, I see no problem with tattoos, regardless the size, shape, color or body part for which it stands. Nor the reason for which it is chosen. This is a personal statement for which everyone has the right to choose for themselves.

Now granted, in our society, there are certain careers, social groups and cultural biases that makes this self-expression nil. Jobs which require conservative dress and mannerisms cannot have employees with blatant tattoos showing in public.

So, therefore, it does denote more than just an artistic freedom- because you are having to ‘hide’ it from employers, family, friends, etc.? Different tattoos represent different things in people; how they look, represent themselves, what clubs [people] they belong to, jobs they hold, family units, country, region, city, town and heck; neighborhood!

It’s such a riveting conversation, that even my two tattoos that I have on my body, get notices, most of the time with positive accolades. But mine are, yes, girly and tasteful – whatever context you want to put that in, but for me they are my personal statement. Markers of my life experiences. Reminders of my life, challenges, triumphs, experiences and roads less travelled. And ultimately, my choice when it comes down to it. Despite initial grumblings from the parentals, it has since gone by the way-side. But I was also in my 20s when I got my first one. When is age appropriateness – well, appropriate? There is an 18 and over law in effect for a reason – but only in the US to my knowledge.

I think they are cool, unique, beautiful and addictive. They denote a certain mystique, allure and sexiness — for some. Others see it as mutilating my body that will be stretched and faded out by the time I’m 70. – I say, hell, I’ll just re-do them at 70!

In the context of tattooing prisoner, or POWs, that is a completely different means altogether. Forcible markings are not the conversation I’m warranting here. I’m talking about beauty, self-image, confidence, feminist rights and choice for women to have tattoos and piercings as a god-given right to their body and over what is done to it without repercussions, ostracism, banishment, abuse and/or being outcast because of one’s personal choice.

Motherhood & Feminism; the Truth

This Wednesday at 12pm and 7pm EST I will be streaming a speaking engagement by Dr. Amber Kinser. Her bio describes her as “…a powerful feminist writer, speaker, mother, and professor. Kinser draws on feminist thought and activism, her doctoral training in family communication, and 18+ years experience as a mother to explore how women who choose to mother can do so as powerful people. She agrees with celebrated author Ann Crittenden that attention to mothering is the great unfinished business of feminism. She intends to get all up in that business.”

Powerful indeed. She is also the author of ‘Motherhood and Feminism‘ and the Chair of the Communications Department at East Tennessee State University, she is also the former Head of the Women’s Studies Department at ETSU.

I have heard Dr. Kinser speak and she is a very passionate person about her subject, a strong working mother with strong opinions about raising children, feminist rantings and women who chose to become mothers in the social sphere of the idea of motherhood in today’s testy environment. I think she’s pretty darn awesome and certainly extremely knowledgable on the topic.

Being a single girl (in a virtual world, nonetheless…) myself, I find it an interesting topic of debate. Many women whom I’ve spoken to, my mother included, who chose to raise children and work in a career, or those women who have raised children and decided to not pursue a career seem to still be finding their place in a society in which seems to debate what is really the face of feminism in motherhood. Which one is right vs wrong. Why do we have to choose at all?

My mother raised two daughters and put herself through two college degrees, while her husband worked to support us all. Sacrifices made, mostly her young single-dom, but a ‘job’ of raising children nonetheless, she was proud to have chosen – even today, there are no regrets. But raising two independent daughters, who have chosen not to marry or have children, through our own single Odyssey, is something that has us each seeing ‘feminism’ in a different light.

Would my parents like to see me married? Of course? But they have long since given up that argument. Why have I chosen the single life? Quite simply,I’ve climbed the career ladder for 20 years, traveling the world, learning about myself and my place in it and haven’t slowed down long enough to stop and pursue that road. Honestly, I’ve never sat still long enough to carry on a serious relationship; even though engaged briefly once in my very young life. Maybe, that deterred me. These are questions I still ask myself from time to time when the issue comes up.

Why again, did I choose this path, when my raising and environment was from a loving, two-parent home? Maybe, I decided long ago that I didn’t want the responsibility of raising children, while I was still discovering myself? Maybe, I watched my mother juggle so many responsibilities, I thought it looked ‘too hard’. Maybe, it was the times (80s) when I lived as a teenager, where everything was the ‘Me generation’; the Gen-Xer’s, who were going to take the world by storm and not toe the line to any corporate jobby or fall in line the same matriarchal role as our baby boomer mothers had. A generational shift happened – I wanted it all! And still do, but 20 years later after my idealistic 20s, I know better.

At one time in my 20s, I did think I could have it all. Marriage, kids, career, travel, adventure, creativity, art, music…but I was kidding myself because there is always something sacrificed; and in my case – I felt it would be my individual freedoms. I guess that’s why I think this debate between Motherhood and Feminism is such an interesting topic.

So many women who proclaim they are feminists, divide and conquer claiming they are better feminists than others because of (fill in the blank). Whether they are mothers who have chosen to stay at home and raise children, or leave their children in daycare while they pursue a career, or even women who choose not to have children or get married and ‘selfishly’ go along their merry way — who is the ‘better’ feminist? Why can’t we just all get along and see that there are both benefits and sacrifices just simply from being a WOMAN in general?

We have so much to learn from each other. We’re already fighting ‘the man’ – imagine if we could step outside the dogma and see the beauty and freedom that we have fought for actually is working…though we still have work. As Dr. Kinser says ‘…there is a great unfinished business in feminism’ (taking it out of context to fit my statement here).

Will I ever get married? I don’t know. Will I ever have children? At 40 now, it’s doubtful, though adoption is never out of the question. But that is a personal choice, not based on science, society, culture, or peer pressure – but rather, I feel as a feminist, that I shouldn’t have to make these decisions or conform to any particular ‘ideal’ of what a feminist looks like in the 21st century because of some outdated rhetoric or indoctrinated fem-speak that dictates how I should and shouldn’t live my life or make my own choices according to the equality and freedom I deserve as a human being – and yes, that includes YOU governments who impose their morality and judgements on women who chose what to do with their own bodies. (Whew! That’s a long sentence)…breathe…

Don’t get me started on that topic. We’ll save that one for the next time…
