Top search engine rankings through SEO optimized web page content is explained here in detail. Top rankings are achieved through both on-site SEO optimized content and off-site backlinking practices.  If you drop the ball on either then you will not get the results you want – which are rankings in the 1 – 3 positions of the search engine results pages (SERP).

Keyword Analysis

Before beginning writing content you need to ensure you get the best SEO value out of a pages content. To ensure this start with keyword analysis. This will tell you what kind of traffic to expect when your rankings come in. The Google Adwords Keyword Tool is a great free tool that gives you number of monthly searches and more. Nothing like getting it straight from the horses mouth.

Latent Semantic Indexing – LSI

Once you have your list of targeted keywords you need to determine what keywords will be used on any particular page. Select no more than a few primary keywords for a page or blog post. Next you’ll need a list of keywords or keyword phrases that are contextually relevant to these keywords. This is due to the Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) attribute of current search engine algorithms. If you have a keyword density for your selected keywords and there are no other keywords that would fit into a normal conversation on the same topic then you will not get the best results. A good tool to find semantically related words is the Google Wonder Wheel.  Just do a regular Google search then click the left-side Google Wonder Wheel link.

SEO Optimize Body Content

Write the main body content first with keywords from the keyword analysis above.  Details of factors to consider and places to put your content are described below.

Solve a Customer Problem

If your content is valuable to others because it solves their problems then you can expect more interest. Content that focuses on only you and your company tends to get lower interest. Blog posts in particular should be focused on problem solving or providing illuminating information. An example would be timely information regarding industry breaking news like Apples press conference about iPhone 4 problems.

Write for the Internet User

Internet users are reluctant to read long passages of text. Limiting your paragraphs to 4 or 5 lines and bulleting out your main points increase the probability of your visitors reading what you write.

Keyword Prominence

A keywords prominence refers to where the keyword appears within a particular section of a page.  In general, to show importance you should place your targeted keywords at the beginning of the main body content, title tag, description meta-tag, keywords meta-tag, etc.

Optimized Keyword Density

Keywords At Top and Bottom

Make sure to start your body content with keywords, and end them with the same targeted keywords. This tells the search engines your intent that these keywords are important.

Anchor Link Text

A very important ranking factor is the text you use in text anchor links. Make sure to use keywords in this text, and make sure that the target page for the link points to a relevant page all about the words in the anchor text. Header (h1, h2…) Tags

Using a proper hierarchy of header tags starting with your important keywords is another important attribute used in ranking algorithms.

Keyword Bolding and Italics (Emphasis)

As you can see from this article, the important keywords are in bold and italics. This separates those words and signals importance to the search engines. Note that underlining text that is not a link is a usability problem because Internet readers expect links to be underlined.

Image Alt Tags

The image alt attribute is important for both SEO and accessibility – for visitors with disabilities that use readers to scan and read web page content for them. Make good use of these tags and make them both descriptive and keyword oriented for the search engines.

SEO Optimize Page Titles

The page title between the <title>Your Title Here</title> tags is what shows up in search engines as the link. As such, if the keywords that were typed in for the search are in this link then the user sees that link as relevant. You want it to be 65 characters or less, to start with keywords and persuasive to draw a click.

SEO Optimize Meta-Description

The description meta tag <meta name=”description” content=”Your description here.” /> should be 150 characters or less. This is the amount of text shown in the descriptive part of the SERP under the title link. if the search engine finds the keywords used in the search on the page then they’ll show an excerpt of the page content. If the keywords are not found on the page then the search engine will show the meta-description information. For this reason you want to make it persuasive and about the page content so it will draw a click and when the visitor arrives the content will be about what they searched for.

Moving a WordPress.com website to a self-hosted website WordPress.org based website is more straightforward than it may seem. You just have to move the database over and install a theme.

The big disadvantage to using WordPress.org to host your website is that you have a limited set of themes that you can use, and you cannot install plugins. The latter is a huge problem if you want a robust business website with search engine optimization (SEO) capabilities. WordPress plugins and custom code make a WordPress.org website a powerful Internet marketing engine.

Here are the simple steps to transfer your WordPress.com website to a your own hosting:

1. Create your new hosting account. We recommend either Bluehost or Hostgator.
2. Install WordPress in a one-click install through your control panel.
3. Find a theme for the new website. You can find many free themes by doing a Google search for free WordPress themes. If you want a theme specific to a niche then add the name of your niche to the search.
4. FTP upload your theme to your website. The theme folder and all of its contents will be placed into the /public_html/wp-content/themes/ folder. I use the open source FileZilla as my FTP client. It just works.
5. Enable your theme by going to Appearance > Themes, clicking the one you want to enable then click Activate “Your Theme Name” at the top-left of the preview screen.
6. Export the WordPress.com database and save to your local hard drive. To do this, in your WordPress.com account go to My Dashboard > Tools > Export. Save this file to your desktop hard drive.
7. Import the exported file into your new hosting account by clicking the menu options Tools > Import > WordPress. Select the file you exported from WordPress.com and click submit to import all of your old websites data.

Many job search tools, job searching tips and job openings websites are listed here for those off of their game in this economy. I am in the business of finding jobs so here are several tried and proven methods of being most effective in your job hunting efforts.

Finalize and Create A Complete, Up-To-Date and Polished Resume

It is literally you to most of the people that you send it to. To make it more personal consider placing onto it a picture of yourself smiling and in a good mood.

Build it at Monster.com and make it very complete. They are the resume professionals so this is a good place to start for layout and content. Take your time and come back several times to ensure it is what you want to use to represent yourself. Once you have your resume completed, do one of the following:

1. Print the Monster resume to PDF. If you don’t have a PDF utility then this is free: http://www.primopdf.com. Install it and it becomes a printer driver. You just print to it. Then sign up for email agents at some of the sites listed below and email your updated resume in pdf format to them.
2. Copy the html from your resume (menu items View > Source in your browser) on Monster into a text file and post it on a website. If you don’t have a place to post it I can post it on mine and I’m happy to do that. Place a link to your resume on the business card. Look at examples, and make it a great effort. It is a real psychological boost and it makes you feel like you are really out there. Of course, you first need to think about your desired position, like Editor, Software Engineer, Accounting Specialist, etc. Note: Applicant isn’t a very convincing occupation so you’ll need to be a bit more specific.

Setup Job Search Tools from MotionT

To automate searching for leads and jobs I use tools from MotionT that automatically scours any city you want for categories and keywords you are looking for. Tools from MotionT have a 7 day free trial. They have a Job Finder (http://motiont.com/jobfinder.aspx) and a Leads Finder (http://motiont.com/leadsfinder.aspx). You might try both. Since the tools come with a free 7 day free trial be ready to be answering a lot of leads when you install any of them. If you like the tool then buy it. They are very reasonable in cost.

Once installed it will automatically perform your searches and email you if desired. I use it every day and it works great. Detailed instructions for these tools are at the bottom of this email.

Some of the email agents below allow you to set up job search criteria then receive emails when jobs are listed that meet your criteria. A lot of these are tech jobs, but there are several sites that are for jobs in general.

Once installed it takes only seconds to get leads based on any keywords. The free trial expires after 7 days so use it as much as possible in those 7 days. I recommend pourchasing the one you like the most.

Their job and leads finder tools provides free leads! There are lead services that cost some good money. I have acquired real and long-term customers from this tool already. You configure it, then it brings in continual leads as often as you set it to. It is the best tool I have found to scan for requests of your interest.

Here’s what you do:

1. Download it from the above page and install it
2. Do a simple keyword research to find the keywords most used based on the ones you are looking like: copywriter, copy writer, editor, etc. Use this free Google tool to see what are the most searched and used keywords: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.
3. Click the Categories tab on the left and check jobs and gigs.
4. Click the Locations tab on the left, open up the United States then click the checkbox beside each State where you want to scan. You can open each State and click Cities to refine your geo-target. You can just check the United States checkbox to run the scan for all of the cities and states in the US.
5. If you want this search to run on pre-determined intervals click the Add as Alert checkbox.
6. Click the Alerts tab on the left and set a number in the Check every x minutes box. When you minimize the tool it will run every x minutes, so make sure that if you do run it periodically that it doesn’t bog down your computer. I just run each scan in the Alerts tab first thing in the morning then respond to these leads early so I have all day for them to respond to my emails or calls. If you want an email each time this scan runs then click the Send alert via email checkbox. If you are an RSS aficionado and want to subscribe to the notifications via RSS then check that box and subscribe to it. Sound and alert notifications are also possible by checking the appropriate checkboxes.
7. To start the search click the Advanced Search button at the top. For your first search you may want to set Posted to Within 3 Days or more, but keep in mind that if you keep this setting this will bring in multiple copies of the same Craigslist request. I always have it set to within 1 Day to make sure that the leads I get are fresh. See the other options in this Advanced Search dialog then click the Search button. This will perform the search and create the Alert as specified.

Typical websites have usability issues which deter potential clients and customers leaving them with confusion and frustration. It can all be fixed. This how-to quick reference guide is intended for anyone about to design a new website, or those that have a website that doesn’t perform to their expectations.

Usability – The Numbers

* Forrester Research studies estimate that approximately 50 percent of potential sales are lost because visitors can’t find information and 40 percent of visitors do not return to a website when their first experience is negative.
* According to usability expert Jakob Nielsen, website re-design based on usability standards can increase online sales by 100%
* Usability projects can return 5-10 times their cost in the first year.
* A comprehensive usability project can improve website results by 83%. Since your competitors will probably incorporate some of the changes you implemented, this can settle out to 68%.

Page Layout And Structure Usability

* Web design quality enhances credibility – just do it
* Error free HTML (or XHTML) and CSS ensures consistent cross-browser page rendering. A discombobulated website will kill your credibility.
* Whitespace usage increases comprehension by 20%
* Golden Triangle is important. That is the top-left of the page above the fold (before scrolling). Jakob Nielsen’s user scrolling study showed that only 23% of visitors scroll on their first visit to a website.
* Faces not looking at you – if a face image is looking somewhere other than directly at us, we’ll also look in that same direction. Take advantage of this by drawing your users’ attention to the most important parts of your page or ad.
* Search box size counts – 27 character search box shows all search text in 90% of searches according to Jakob Neilsen
* Header and footer should be separated in design from the main body of the page

Website Navigation Usability

* Consistent navigation – make sure navigation appears in the same location on web pages
* Text is king – use descriptive text in navigation links, not images, java applets or flash
* Location feedback – provide the user with information about where they are with breadcrumbs, hyperlink styles, colors
* Sitemaps – provide a visitor sitemap with a website outline and important links
* Call to action or navigation boxes should not look like ads because visitors automatically skip over them
* Homepage navigation placed on the top of the page performs best

Text Characteristics Usability

* Dominant headlines will immediately draw the visitors eye
* Headlines first words must grab your attention immediately. If they are keywords then you also get an SEO benefit out of it.
* Headings, subheads, phone numbers and date/times should be used and formatted consistently. Using a logical progression of h1, h2, h3, etc. tags helps the readers understanding of the page information hierarchy and is also a good accessibility feature.
* Standard fonts of 12 points or more maximize reading speeds
* Black text on a white background increases reading speeds up to 32%
* Sentence case (only first word capitalized) is important for reading speed and comprehension
* Bold and italics should be used sparingly, and ideally to emphasize keywords relevant to the topic

Link Definitions Usability

* Blue links are the most standard color for links
* Underline links – this is also standard and good for accessibility reasons
* Visited links should be a different, more pale color
* Link hover color should light up the link with brighter colors
* Red or green links should be avoided due to the preponderance of color-blindness
* Don’t underline text that is not a link
* Don’t show normal text in link colors
* Don’t use bold-facing as a hover effect. Making the font wider will cause the text to re-align.
* Link titles can be used for the hover effect to describe where the link is going – also a great accessibility feature
* Link text should describe the page they are linked to
* Tabindex is a great method for defining logical tabbing through elements
* Menu links should usually not follow the rules above

Writing Standards Usability

* Write for scanning – internet readers don’t read long paragraphs. Keep paragraphs to 3 sentences, group logically and provide ample but not too much information.
* Bullet points should be used as much as possible
* Bold and italics should be used for your most important words. This is also a big SEO factor – search engines take more heed when you emphasize keywords and will consequently rank you higher for them.

* Jakob Neilsen points out that tests with 5 users will find 85% of site problems and 15 users will reveal them all.
