I have been using the Phantom A for about 7 weeks now and I have a pretty good grasp of the everyday performance of the device. This post which is part of a series reviewing the device (SEE: Unboxing, Hardware & Software Specs), will focus on how the Phantom A performs doing the tasks we need our smartphones for every day.

What tasks do I need a smartphone for?

Messaging & Social Networks. My day involves a lot of communication and messaging predominantly via email, Whatsapp and Skype. I use social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn) for some messaging and communication but mostly they are for staying in the loop about what is happening with family and friends.

Content. I need my daily fix of content and news, mostly business and tech news, consumed via Flipboard and audio podcasts, which I either stream or download. This means I push my device fairly hard. Admittedly since video makes up a pretty minor part of my daily content consumption, avid video users would push their smartphones harder than I do.

Games. This isn’t a consistent usage but some weeks I get into gamer mode and play pretty regularly.

So the question is, how does the Tecno Phantom A perform at these tasks I require?

Apps

I must admit that based on the specs of the Android devices that come out weekly and the perception that Android needs higher specs to perform reasonably, I have been pleasantly surprised by the experience with the 1.0GHz Dual Core processor of the Tecno Phantom A .

Email and messaging via my social networks, including checking notifications, switching between email and social accounts, do not cause any noticeable lags or stutters that will cause me to sigh and wish I had more raw power. The apps for Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google+ have all been handled easily by the processor. Email via Gmail and Outlook have also not given me any issues of note.

I originally started using the device with Google Currents and Flipboard as my news readers but I have switched primarily to Flipboard. Flipboard presents content beautifully at a relatively large cost of RAM. I can easily reach 300MB+ of RAM consumption and yet, I have no complaints.

In fact, internet access has hindered my use of apps more than any performance issues. This includes apps for streaming my favorite podcasts. I’m satisfied with the performance and cannot come up with any instance, I was frustrated because an app was struggling.

However there have been a few instances apps have stopped responding and I am uncertain if these were caused by bugs in the app or performance issues from lack of processing power or RAM. Uber Android geeks, any ideas on apps or methods to find out the general reason for an app failing? This might help me determine if the device is hindering me in any way.

Games

Gaming is one of the areas where raw specs being higher is always better. I have downloaded a couple of games, played three of these games actively. The first game I installed is Angry Birds Star Wars, followed by an interesting game called Pokopang tied into a messaging platform called Line, I was exploring. I have also in the last week installed Temple Run 2 and played it fairly regularly.

These games all have high quality graphics and I assume they are pushing the device hard enough for me to judge its performance, especially Temple Run 2. I have not tried any racing games or shooters, which also usually have high performance requirements.

I have thoroughly enjoyed gaming so far on the Tecno Phantom A. I have not run into any major issues around installing or playing games, although I should probably ask for some perceived ‘high end’ games and see if the device struggles.

Video

Video is another processor and RAM tasking activity on mobile devices. I am not an avid user of video on my Tecno Phantom A but the times I do watch video, the device has played them back without issue.

Storage

My general issue with the device in respect of apps have been worrying about running out of storage. 4 GB of internal storage seems to make me uncomfortable installing apps after a certain number of apps. I have developed an app cleaning habit, about once every two or three weeks, although I haven’t actually run out of space.

There were two days somewhere around week 4, when I got ready to complain about storage issues, since I couldn’t update the Chrome browser due to ‘insufficient space’. However it turned out to be a known issue with updating some apps and following instructions online (to clear the app data), Chrome installed perfectly without any further hitches.

That may have contributed to my new app cleaning habit, which makes me remove apps I am not using and merely installed to test. This is more an issue or perception than reality.

Battery Life

This is the most interesting part of everyday use of the Tecno Phantom A smartphone. The battery life is not exceptional, however it performs reasonably well, when compared to most smartphones.

The most unexpected aspect for battery life I noticed is that, using the Dual SIM capability seems to reduce the battery life noticeably for me. It is logically that two SIM cards running concurrently would reduce the battery life as twice the work is being by network radios. However since the device is sold for this very purpose it might been seen as a black eye but personally I use it mostly as a single SIM device.

Personally I think I noticed the battery life performance more since I sometimes stream podcasts during the commute home. It might be unfair since most smartphones at around 6pm – 8pm, after a full day of use, might probably be low on battery.

I have run out totally once or twice when I used Skype for about 2 hours during the day on a weekend. Weekends also see me needing to charge more frequently as the phone hardly leaves my side as I do chores, eat and other weekend activities.

I have found the power bank handy to help give a boost to the device from time to time, most especially weekends when I push it harder than usual.

Conclusion

I would love more battery life out of the Phantom A but then again this is the most common complaint about most smartphones. Battery technology has remained the same as manufacturers put more higher resolution and power sapping displays in smartphones.

Overall this device continues to surprise me more and more each time I evaluate it. Tecno Phantom A users out there, share your everyday performance stories about the device. I would love to hear different experiences based on how people use their devices.

The Tecno Phantom A, as described in the first part of this review, is a mid-range device from Tecno Mobile (Facebook, Twitter) which impressed me on first look. This post will look at the Tecno Phantom A specs, both hardware and software, and provide some insight on what the specs mean for real world use.

Slim, Thin Profile

The Tecno Phantom A is a mere 9.1mm in thickness. This means the Phantom A is slimmer than an iPhone 4S (9.3 mm) and far slimmer than a Lumia 920 (10.7 mm) and it is also just 5mm thicker than a Galaxy S3 (8.6mm). At the mid-range end of the smartphone market such a slim profile device is very impressive.

Awesome Display (5 inch, HD Display)

The screen is one of the best items on the Tecno Phantom A specs sheet. At a whopping 5 inches with an HD resolution (720 x 1280px), browsing the web and watching videos on this device is awesome. I must admit I have always thought 5 inches was too big of a screen size for a smartphones and indicated as much in previous posts and discussions online. I just became a fan of big screens.

I still cannot get over putting such a huge slab to my ear to receive calls but the experience of a big HD display for all other activities mitigates that perfectly. Is it possible moving from a Windows Phone 7.8 device with 480 x 800px (WVGA resolution) to an HD resolution is influencing my love of this display? Maybe. But however you look at it, the screen on the Phantom A is very, very good, period.

Stock Android (Android Jelly Bean 4.1)

Another thing to love about the Phantom A is its use of stock Android, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to be precise. Stock Android means there are no extra bells or whistles added to the OS by the manufacturer. It is the pure, unadulterated version of Android as put out by Google.

As a new Android user (I am not a full convert yet), this is a real asset, as it allows me I want to judge the OS on its merits. Android is not the simplest OS and OEM variants, according to public consensus online, usually do more harm than good. The exception is camera enhancements, where the OEMs seem to shine over stock Android.

I am not sure what the upgrade path to Jelly Bean 4.2 or 4.3 is for the Tecno Phantom A . I will investigate and hopefully provide an update in one of the subsequent posts.

Tecno App Assistant™

Continuing in the line of adding value to entice consumers to choose their devices, the Tecno App Assistant™ provides one click installation for a number of apps pre-loaded on the device. These apps can be installed without downloads or buying from the Google Play store.

The Tecno Phantom A app assistant comes packed with over 30 apps covering Social, Utilities, Education, News, Entertainment, Games and Web Surfing, all free! An initial scan reveals a few apps which are worth having, especially since they are free for Phantom A owners.

Quick Office Pro: My favorite of the 30 apps, Quick Office Pro is $14.99 on the Play store, available for free on the Phantom A. QuickOffice Pro as the name suggests is a productivity suite and PDF reader. It supports Microsoft Office docs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). I initially installed it thinking it was free for all Android users as Google recently acquired, QuickOffice Inc, the company behind this app.

Flash Share: This is a Tecno app that allows users to share files directly with each other using direct peer to peer connections over WiFi. This means big files can be shared in seconds. Watch the product video for Tecno Flash Share

There are also apps for Ghanaweb; MyJoyonline and PeaceFM Online but I honestly have not tried them yet.

Here are all the specs in a easy to digest format.

Tecno Mobile has released a new flagship dual SIM device named the Phantom A with a campaign dubbed ‘Innovation Liberated’. I am excited to say I have been given a device to test and review. There are two main reasons for my excitement.

First, I have never used a device from one of the supposed mid-tier to lower end handset manaufacturers but the Phantom A from Tecno has me genuinely excited about this tier in the smartphone market.

Second, I am about to begin my first real foray into using Android as a primary device, since I moved from BlackBerry to Windows Phone. I have dabbled here and there with Android, mostly troubleshooting other people’s devices, even though I was not an Android user myself. So in a sense, we have two firsts for me.

This post is based around my first experience with the Tecno brand and specifically the Phantom A. It will focus on my first impressions and setting up the phone up to start its life as my primary device over the next few weeks.

Tecno Phantom A: First Look

At first glance, there is no mistaking that this device is styled similarly to a lot of other smartphones in the Android ecosystem. Rectangular slab with the three familiar buttons at the bottom, proximity sensor and speaker grill on top, control buttons at the side. It is perfectly acceptable to me and will be satisfactory to most consumers.

There are a few striking things to note when you first see the box containing the Tecno Phatom A. Tecno is putting their competitors on notice by dipping a toe into the premium end of the market with its product packagaing and branding. This beautiful external packaging instils confidence you are getting a well made product, a perception important to mid tier brands.

The external product packaging is excellent and will instil confidence in buyers

What’s in the Box?

The Phantom A comes in a beautifully packaged box which contains the smartphone and a plethora of minor accessories, a flip case and what I personally think is the game changing bundled accessory, a free power bank for additional battery capacity on the move.

Inside the main package are three additional boxes which house the smartphone, the Flip case and the power bank.

Tecno Phantom A Kit: Smartphone + Power Bank + Flip Case

The smartphone itself feels solid in the hand and light, feather light actually compared to my LG Quantum Windows Phone (which I still love, I think?). My device is black but there is a white variant of the Phantom A. It is a Dual SIM device but I am going to use it mainly with my Airtel SIM, which is my pseudo data SIM. The battery is partially charged as is common with most devices these days and I was able to setup my Airtel SIM.

The Accessories

The Tecno Phantom A comes with a set of expected minor accesories:

Ear Phones + Additional Ear Buds (White, would have preferred black but not a deal breaker)

Charger + Mini USB Cable (doubles as the data cable)

MicroSD Card (8GB with about 7.5 GB available): This is already installed in the slot in the phone.

Flip Case

These days of course the first thing you do with a new smartphone is protect its beautifully designed exterior. So of course on comes the case. The bundled flip case replaces the existing battery cover and provides a nice and seamless way to protect the phone. It snaps on easily, although removing it requires bravery the first few times.
TIP: To open the cover, start at the Bottom Right of the phone which has a subtle notch for opening and work along the side of the phone. Complete opening from the Top Right of the phone, until you get the case loose.

Tecno Power Bank (MPB02)

The Tecno power bank bundled with the Tecno Phantom A, is rated at 2200 mAh and rated for about 50 hours of standby time. It is charged via USB and it also doubles as a torch (cute but not essential). I will be doing real world testing of how the power bank performs when the smartphone battery is low.

The Price

The Phantom A is priced aggressively at approximately GHC 520.00, roughly about $250. This puts it in the price range of a Huawei W1 Ascend (GHC 499 at IPMC) and the Lumia 620, both Windows Phone 8 devices which were on my purchase list, as solid replacements for my aged LG Quantum.

At GHC 520, the Tecno Phantom A is priced to sell and competitors must work hard.

This price is also what makes the additional power bank such a compelling bundled accessory and a smart move by Tecno. Doing some quick math I would peg it at about GHC 20 – GHC 40 in additional value bundled free along with the Phantom A.

Expect a couple of more posts on the hardware, software and other aspects of the device as I subject it to the grueling tasks that comprise my day. I am most excited about the prospect of reading blog posts and articles on this large HD screen.

As you can tell I am excited to explore Android and some of the unique features and apps built into the the Tecno Phantom A.

Any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. Please limit it to what’s in the box and the general look and feel as I am within my first few days of use. Any apps, tips and use cases to test for and try out to help you better judge the capabilities, suggest them in the comments.

Several years ago my phone was an extension of my left brain. Could not live without it. I relied on it for everything from movies, news to drug dosages. I kept updating and adding applications to maintain the significance of my handset or better still my brain.

A year or two later and I was playing catch up. Changed my device everytime a new one was released and still will not catch up. My status was eroding and I found myself needing a new handset or notebook to do those things I now could not.

The competition was brighter, shinier and had all sorts fancy things they could do. My only oppurtunity to brag was that we all spent the same amount if not more to get our phones. Hmmm.

Fast forward another few years and I’m starting to feel good all over again. Something says its good I stayed true to the handset, I’m about to be rewarded. All I love plus a bit more.

For a Blackberry fanatic like me the new Blackberry Z10 is a breath of freshair. There’s reason to hunt for news about it again. I smile when I see a picture and a blackberry is with me in my dreams after several years.

I don’t care how many of the available and announced apps are android ports, I don’t care how close it looks to the competition, I don’t care that it has no physical keyboard (yet), all I care about is that I will be relevant again and I can leave behind my notebook.

I have not seen a BlackBerry Z10 yet, let alone play with one, but I’m saving towards that and I will put up a review, albeit biased.

PS. Vodafone Ghana has announced they will be launching the BlackBerry Z10 on their network.

Samsung however has proven to us that its limitless what you can do with 21st century technology and creative minds. Hence, the SAMSUNG GALAXY CAMERA.

The camera also comes with exciting features like a Smart Pro’ technology which allows users to choose from a series of preset scenario options which automatically adjusts the camera’s settings in order to capture the perfect photo.

The super versatile Samsung Galaxy Camera also allows users to shoot and share high quality photographs and video spontaneously from anywhere and anytime using the easy-to-navigate menu system that gives stunning clarity, and allows them to edit and share their photos instantly sacrificing picture quality.

The ‘Smart Content Manager’, an innovative on-device organization tool which intelligently creates folders, tags faces, and even suggests which pictures to delete when they don’t come out as desired. It also features a comprehensive set of 35 powerful photo editing features through the ‘Photo Wizard’ and Movie Wizard’, which allows users to make professional quality edits on the go, in addition to creating and editing expert-quality videos easily with the touch screen.

Once the images have been taken, the convenient ‘Auto Upload’ feature automatically saves precious photos into the cloud via Samsung’s ‘AllShare’ tool. The ‘Share Shot’ feature also allows images to be shared instantly with users able to share photos at the same time they shoot.

The Samsung GALAXY Camera boasts a large and vivid camera display – a 4.8”(121.2mm) HD Super Clear LCD screen; allows perfect picture-taking with a 21x super long zoom lens and a super-bright 16M BSI CMOS sensor, and is supported by a quad-core processor that enables fast web-browsing and multi-tasking, as well as high-speed image processing without a significant impact on battery life.

Wednesday October 24 is the United Nations day. On this day in 1945 the Charter of the United Nations was signed.

The Charter of the United Nations is the foundational treaty of the international organization called the United Nations. It was signed at the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center in San Francisco, United States, on 26 June 1945, by 50 of the 51 original member countries (Poland, the other original member, which was not represented at the conference, signed it two months later). It entered into force on 24 October 1945, after being ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council—the Republic of China (later replaced by the People’s Republic of China), France, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (later replaced by the Russian Federation), the United Kingdom, and the United States—and a majority of the other signatories. Today, 193 countries are the members of the United Nations.

According to Wikipedia a wiki is a website which allows its users to add, modify, or delete its content via a web browser.

A site like bbc.com is not a wiki because you cannot add, modify or delete content in your web browser as a user. The most you can do is comment on an article or media. However on a wiki like this, via your browser, you can easily modify or add content by clicking the “edit” link.

Some popular wiki sites include Wikipedia, Answers.com, Traveller’s Point, Pornopedia and so on. Ward Cunningham developed the first wiki software.

Are wikis social media?

Social media refers to platforms that allow for creation and exchange of user generated content. Wikis are social media platforms and the social quality of wikis lie in the collaboration of users to create user generated content, and the exchange and discussions that occur on these platforms.

Kaplan and Haenlein in their Business Horizons (2010) article, identified six different types of social media. This includes collaborative projects (for example, Wikipedia), blogs and microblogs (for example, Twitter), content communities (for example, YouTube), social networking sites (for example, Facebook), virtual game worlds (e.g., World of Warcraft), and virtual social worlds (e.g. Second Life).

Wikipedia- Social media

Features of wikis

The major features include:

Wikis allow all self- proclaimed users to edit or create pages within the sites under the guidance of administrators.

Pages with related topics and discussions are easily linked on wikis.

Wikis are not blogs. Individual blog posts of a blog are usually created by individual authors. However on wikis, multiple users (sometimes hundreds) may collaborate to work on a single page. Content generation by users is not usually done at the same time but over time. Wikis exist by collaborative effort.

Wikis can accommodate various media like videos, audio files and photographs in addition to texts.

Some benefits of wikis

A wiki like Wikipedia (English) is a great educational resource. It serves as a rich online reference for a variety of topics. Currently there are 4,000,000 encyclopedia articles free for use on Wikipedia.

Traveller’s Point has a wiki which allows travellers to share experiences and update existing ones on the site as travel information change. Wikis are great for sharing publicly and privately.

Wikis can be used as very simple yet functional websites.

They also offer space for project development and discussions.

In business wikis are important. An article by Forbes speaks on the importance of wikis to entrepreneurs, as platforms for complex project-management, advantageous page rank on search engines, grouping of related information for quick access and so on.

Wikis in Ghana

Currently the most popular wikis in Ghana that Ghanaians also contribute to include Wikipedia and other wikis by Wikimedia Foundation.

Wikis are not too popular here. However there are individuals and a group — Planning Wikimedia Ghana (PWMGH), encouraging the use of wikis and contribution of content to them. However PWMGH’s focus is on Wikimedia Foundation project sites.

Wikimedians

As social networking sites and blogs are encouraged for business, educational, political and other uses, social media groups should create the awareness for the use of wikis also. Their uniqueness and how best people can make use of their qualities should be put forth, to give people and organisations more social media options.

Gmail news!

According to Mashable, Gmail now allows you to search within email attachments. All you need to do is start your search with “has:attachment” then your search query.

Samsung is suing Apple?

In what seems like a classic example of tit for tat, Samsung is suing Apple because the iPhone 5 is LTE capable, which according to them is an infringement on Samsung’s patent. In a statement issued Samsung said: “…we have little choice but to take the steps necessary to protect our innovations and intellectual property rights.” The question now is, “Will Samsung win?”

#DidYouKnow

Because the iPhone is a competitor of Taiwanese phone company HTC, Hu Yu-wei, Taiwan’s information minister has been criticized for posting a picture of an iPhone 5 on his Facebook wall with the caption: “Bolster consumption and economy.”

Pay to promote yourself on Facebook

According to Mashable “Facebook announced on Wednesday U.S. users will now be able to promote their personal posts to friends for a fee.” Would you pay to let your friends know what you just had for lunch? Not quite. However users who might make good use of this feature include those who have something for sale and celebrities with ‘big’ announcements to make.

F is not for Facebook. It’s for Fashion

Mark Zuckerberg whose fortune fell by $423 million on Thursday to $10.2 billion but gained one billion active users of his website this week, has said in an interview on NBC’s Today that he wears the same thing every day. Fyi Steve Jobs and Albert Einstein did the same.

Mark Zuckerberg‘s sister, Arielle, is now a Google employee.

Randi Zuckerberg Tweeted about it.

I have one comment on this post though. Arielle, don’t go spying.

Google Street View and HTC OneX+
Google’s Street View is now available on mobile browsers, and HTC One X+ brings faster processor, more battery life

#TechGh

My Joy Online reported this week that mobile penetration hits 98% in Ghana. This means that there are about 24,438,983 mobile phone lines in the system. The report clarified that “this does not necessarily mean over 24 million Ghanaians have mobile phone lines, because some individuals have more than one mobile line, while others do not have. “

Still on telecommunications Airtel offers huge discounts to Hajj pilgrims.

What’s New!

Youtube releases some cool new features including video branding. Read story on ReelSeo.

Excerpt: Within the last 24 hours, YouTube has just added a feature called “InVideo Programming” under the Settings tab. Clicking on it gives creators two options. You can now “brand” all of your videos by uploading an icon that represents you, and you can also “feature” a video on all of your other videos, giving creators the chance to push a video across their entire catalog.

Steve Jobs

This week the world celebrated Steve Jobs, co founder and predecessor to Tim Cook at Apple Inc. (February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011)

Due to the raging patent war, read about the war he declared on Android which he considered a stolen product and see tonight’s featured video Apple vs. Samsung and the Campaign Against Google from Minute MBA by OnlineMBA.com on Vimeo.
