At least 300,000 Africans expected to die in pandemic: U.N. agency

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The COVID-19 pandemic will likely kill at least 300,000 Africans and risks pushing 29 million into extreme poverty, the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) said on Friday, calling for a $100 billion safety net for the continent.

Africa’s 54 countries have so far reported fewer than 20,000 confirmed cases of the disease, just a fraction of the more than two million cases reported globally. But the World Health Organization warned on Thursday that Africa could see as many as 10 million cases in three to six months.

“To protect and build towards our shared prosperity at least $100 billion is needed to immediately resource a health and social safety net response,” the UNECA report stated.

UNECA is also backing a call by African finance ministers for an additional $100 billion in stimulus, which would include a halt to all external debt service.The agency modelled four scenarios based on the level of preventive measures introduced by African governments.In the total absence of such interventions, the study calculated over 1.2 billion Africans would be infected and 3.3 million would die this year. Africa has a total population of around 1.3 billion.

Most of Africa, however, has already mandated social distancing measures, ranging from curfews and travel guidelines in some countries to full lockdowns in others.

Yet even its best-case scenario, where governments introduce intense social distancing once a threshold of 0.2 deaths per 100,000 people per week is reached, Africa would see 122.8 million infections, 2.3 million hospitalisations and 300,000 deaths.

Combating the disease will be complicated by the fact that 36% of Africans have no access to household washing facilities, and the continent counts just 1.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people. France, in comparison, has 5.98 beds per 1,000 people.

Africa’s young demographic - nearly 60% of the population is below the age of 25 - should help stave off the disease. On the other hand, 56 per cent of the urban population is concentrated in overcrowded slums and many people are also vulnerable due to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malnutrition.

Africa imports 94% of its pharmaceuticals, the report said, noting that at least 71 countries have banned or limited exports of certain supplies deemed essential to fight the disease.

“In a best-case scenario ... $44 billion would be required for testing, personal protective equipment, and to treat all those requiring hospitalisation,” it stated.

However, that is money Africa does not have as the crisis could also shrink the continent’s economy by up to 2.6%.

“We estimate that between 5 million and 29 million people will be pushed below the extreme poverty line of $1.90 per day owing to the impact of COVID-19,” the report said.

In this tiktok video, now gone viral, a black woman could be seen attempting to pass two black-suited men (ostensibly security) at a supermarket entrance. The black woman is prevented from proceeding into the supermarket. A white woman who comes after her is motioned to proceed while the black woman is still asked to go back as the two men chatted in Chinese.

The white woman could be heard saying to the visibly shocked black woman, "sorry I can not shop here."

Coronavirus: Lions nap on road during South African lockdown

Animals are slowly realizing the sudden disappearance of humans and in South Africa's Kruger National Park lions have been taking advantage to expand their leisure territory

Park ranger Richard Sowry was out on patrol on Wednesday when he snapped a pride sleeping on a road which would normally be busy with tourists.

But Kruger, like other wildlife parks, has been shut since 25 March as part of the coronavirus lockdown.

Big cats would usually only be seen by rangers on the roads by night.

How were the pictures taken?

As a ranger in one of Africa's largest game reserves, Mr Sowry performs an essential service and continues to work during the lockdown, checking on the wildlife and guarding against poachers.

A new study has discovered that the coronavirus can also survive on shoes, raising concerns about the footwear worn by hospital staff.

This week, coronavirus cases around the world hit 1.9 million, fuelling widespread panic about the spread of the virus.

Research has shown that the virus predominantly spreads through respiratory droplets in coughs and sneezes.

However, a new study has discovered that the virus can also survive on shoes, raising concerns about the footwear worn by hospital staff.

In the study, researchers from the Academy of Military Medical Sciences took swab samples from 39 coronavirus patients at Huoshenshan Hospital.

The team also sampled the air in the hospital, as well as the floors, computer mice, bins, sickened handrails, patient masks, personal protective equipment and the shoes of medical staff.

The results revealed that the floor contained relatively high levels of the virus.

In the study, the researchers, led by Zhen-Dong Guo, wrote: “The rate of positivity was relatively high for floor swab samples, perhaps because of gravity and air flow causing most virus droplets to float to the ground.

“In addition, as medical staff walk around the ward, the virus can be tracked all over the floor, as indicated by the 100% rate of positivity from the floor in the pharmacy, where there were no patients.”

Meanwhile, the results also revealed that many of the medical staff’s shoes tested positive for the virus.

The researchers said: “Half of the samples from the soles of the ICU medical staff shoes tested positive. Therefore, the soles of medical staff shoes might function as carriers.”

Based on the findings, the researchers are urging medical staff to regularly wash and disinfect their shoes.

The researchers added: “We highly recommend that persons disinfect shoe soles before walking out of wards containing COVID-19 patients.”

Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the coronavirus first emerged late last year, revised sharply upwards its death toll from the disease, admitting people died at home and cases were missed as hospitals struggled to cope in the early days of the outbreak.

The adjustment, detailed in a social media post by the city government on Friday, increased the death toll by 1,290 - about 50 percent - bringing the total to 3,869. The revision brought the number of dead across China to 4,632.

Residents of Wuhan have been warned to stay indoors and strengthen protection measures, a few days before travel restrictions on the city at the centre of the pandemic are scheduled to be lifted.The city’s top official urged vigilance as authorities sought to ward off a second wave of infection from incoming travelers.

China has reported more than 81,600 cases of the virus since the outbreak began, including 3,322 deaths, but the level of transparency around the figures has been questioned. Until this week China’s national health commission was not including people who tested positive but showed no symptoms in its tally. On Friday it reported 31 new confirmed cases, including two locally transmitted infections. Four people died, all of them in Wuhan.

Spain has reported 3,477 new coronavirus cases and a daily rise of 517 deaths Monday, bringing the total number of fatalities to 17,489, the country’s health ministry said. The number of daily deaths has fallen; the death toll the day before had been 619.

The self -proclaimed pastor from Kenya prophet Owuor has allegedly said he begged God to postpone the end of the world, which he had predicted to end on April 12th.

Recall that the prophet had last week made a public prophecy that the world was Going to end on the 12 of April by midnight. And since the prophecy, people in his native country Kenya and the rest of the world had been on the alert for the rapture.

The Kenyan prophet also shared with his congregation his claims that he would be assassinated in the City of Jerusalem but would be taken up to heaven by God. In his claims, the prophet said after his assassination, his body would be abandoned and denied burial.

Owuor, popularly referred to as the “Mightiest Prophet of the Lord” by his congregants said he would exit the scene just like Jesus Christ did but that his will be after he completes his witnessing assignment on earth.

It however came as a shock to many that nothing happened at the exact time the cleric predicted and many began to call him fake.

Owuor was however alleged to have stated before the due time that he had begged God for forgiveness on behalf of sinners in the world and then asked Him to postpone the coming of the Christ.

To The Xenophobic South African

If you do not know when the rain began to drizzle upon you, it's unlikely you'll know when it ceases, but you'll be left drenched all the same.

Most South African blacks have chosen to remain oblivious of matters that truly matter. They do not truly understand why they have become such ravage and a near-minus from the general economic equation of that great nation. And it's not because of other Africans who come in to pick up jobs they, the South Africans blacks, could not do or will not do; or setup businesses they obviously lack the acumen conceive or run.

The greatest question you must ask is: why do employers prefer to give jobs to other Africans? The answer will make you smarter.

The average, educated inclusive, South African black believes he's poorer because migrants blacks with, often times, better thinking and willingness get jobs; or, as the case really is, create a living in their country, when in reality, they are jobless because they're are lazy and have refused to develop and lay legitimate claim through engenuity like their Indian and European counterparts who control more than ninety percent of the South African economy. The black South African expects the government to provide their every need, pursue stress free life and find a way a way to latch on to drugs.

Apartheid aside. Without the whites and Indians, the Chinese and other nationalities, South African would have been just another African country with a suffering wildlife and a bad government. So black South Africans must know they're dishing no favours, yet.

Since the return of majority rule, black South Africans have yet to make any resounding success beyond the personality of Mandela. The black South Africans are yet to make any tangible or meaningful mark on that nation beyond frivolous bickering and perennial murder of their kind.

So rather than kill off other Africans who are beginning jump into the fray and grabbing the opportunities that a globalised South Africa provides, they must wake and smell the coffee. It's not yet late.

The economic emancipation of black South Africans will not come through xenophobic attacks on other Africans, or hostile racist dislodgement of other nationalities.

Instead they must pursue a genuine mental re-orientation which will lead to true empowerment. Because right now they've got their eyes on their toes while other have theirs on things that are worthwhile.

Hating others for doing what one could and can not do is a further assertion and acceptance of one's inability: this South African blacks must know.

Twenty years after the fall of apartheid the table seems to have turned as white ghetto community are springs up in Munsieville, west of Johannesburg, South Africa.

These Reuters Photographs taken in some of the 80 white squatter camps capture some of the most appalling images of life in the squalid white ghetto camps. According to statistics there are 4200 white South Africans living in poverty.

The houses in the community are mainly makeshift, made with rusty roofing sheets, decrepit trailer homes and old woods. Children could be seen going to school barefooted and seemingly jobless men smoke and roam and line up for free food.

Many white south African have fallen on hard times due to change brought about by the global economic meltdown. Since the end of apartheid in 1994 many unskilled white south African who are believed to have benefited from the old regime enjoy little or no sympathy.

The Gambia has banned female genital mutilation (FGM).

The president, Yahya Jammeh, said last night that the controversial surgical intervention would be outlawed. He said the ban would come into effect immediately, though the government is yet to draft legislation to enforce it.

Female genital mutilation involves cutting female genitalia of young girls, usually removal of their their labia and clitoris, which often leads to lifelong health complications, including bleeding, infections, vaginal pain and infertility.

Statistics indicate over 130 million women worldwide are subjected to the procedure.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Pageant judges have crowned a new winner of Zimbabwe's 4th annual "Mister Ugly" contest, upsetting supporters of the crowd favorite who called the winner too handsome and prompting rioting at the event.
Judges on Saturday chose 42-year-old Mison Sere, citing his numerous missing front teeth and a wide range of grotesque facial expressions, over William Masvinu, who had held the title since 2012.
Masvinu and his supporters mobbed the judges upon hearing their decision, claiming that Sere was "too handsome" to win and his ugliness wasn't natural since it was based on missing teeth.
"I am naturally ugly. He is not. He is ugly only when he opens his mouth," maintained Masvinu, gesturing at his rival.
"Do we have to lose our teeth to win? This is cheating," shouted another contestant, Patrick Mupereki. While no one was injured, there was a great deal of pushing and shoving as the results were announced and insults were hurled at the judges.

1. Karl Landsteiner discovered blood
types in 1901 by observing that blood from people of different types would clot when mixed together. He later classified them as A, B and O.

2. ABO isn’t the only blood grouping
system, however. There are currently 33 systems recognized by the International Society of Blood Transfusion, with monikers like Lutheran, Duffy, Hh/ Bombay and Ok.

3. Blood type refers to different
molecules on the surface of red blood cells. A mismatch of these molecules between donor and recipient can trigger a fatal immune reaction after a blood transfusion, as the recipient’s body attacks the outsider blood.

4. But not all blood types matter for all transfusions. Some variants are very rare, or exist only in certain ethnic groups, so the danger of getting a mismatch is, for most people, low.

5. The Junior blood type was formally classified just two years ago when researchers pinpointed the molecule responsible for it. The vast majority of people are Junior positive, but more than 50,000 Japanese are Junior negative. For them, a mismatch can cause a dangerous reaction.

6. Blood types aren’t unique to humans. Dogs have more than a dozen, for example.

A total of 43 more fossilized Dinosaur eggs have been found by construction workers. According to reports, this new discovery was made in the Chinese city of Guangdong on Sunday. This will further enrich the country's dinosaur egg collection which is already the highest in the world with close to 17,000 thousand eggs. Researchers are already working to identify which species of dinosaur they belong to.

The 28,360 solar panel field is expected to power 15,000 homes. The project in just 12 months, and cost $23.7 million. the field is expected to generate 8.3 megawatt of electricity for 12 million people. Now, don't ask why Nigeria hasn't thought of this.

A 200 Years Mummified Monk Found Alive, Said To Be State Of Medication

This preserved body of a 200 years dead monk was discovered in the lotus position, covered in animal hide, last week in the Songinokhairkhan district, close to the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar.

Forensic examinations are being carried out on the remains, which investigators believe belong to a man who may have been a Lama, or a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism.
Now, an expert has claimed the monk may have been in a rare spiritual state known as "tukdam".
