There are 492 grottoes in existence with some 45,000 square meters of murals, and 415 painted clay figures. It's worthy of the name of art treasure house of the Chinese Nation.

The 275 grottoes carved in the later period of the Sixteen Kingdoms are the earliest remaining ones. There were marked influences of Buddhism from the west regions upon the murals. Take for instance "Jataka of the Deer King". It depicts how the king rescues the nine-colored deer. The steed the king rides was painted vividly and in bright colors. The divided state of the South and North Dynasties lasted nearly 200 years until the reunification in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, when there were increasing exchanges, particularly in the cultural fields between China and the states in western regions. The Dunhuang arts made further progress and entered into its booming period. In the Tang Dynasty, the arts of the Mogao Grottoes were at its highest level. The murals are all illustrations of Buddhist sutras, each covering a large area, with some as big as 65 square meters, and encompassing a whole wall.

Legend and History
The first grotto at Mogao was chiseled in CE 366.

The History of Magao Grottoes
According to legend, the area that comprises the Mogao Grottoes was marshland at the time, and a monk by the name of Yue Zun, traveling home across the region, had a vision-like dream in which a thousand golden Budd has figured, therefore the monk decided to turn his dream into a reality, and the work on the grottoes then commenced.

Over the next thousand years, which saw the rise and fall of not less than sixteen imperial dynasties, the work of chiseling out the grottoes and of adorning them continued. The construction of the last grotto was completed during the Yuan (CE 1279-1368) Dynasty.

Li River China The Wonderful scenery

At the same time, through national allocations, requisitions and private donations, more than 220,000 additional pieces of cultural significance were added, making up for such omissions from the original Qing collections as colored earthenware from the Stone Age, bronzes and jades from the Shang and Zhou dynasties, pottery tomb figurines from the Han dynasty, stone sculpture from the Northern and Southern Dynasties, and tri-color pottery from the Tang dynasty. Summer Palace was the imperial garden in Qing Dynasty, and now a key scenery spot of China. The garden based on the arrangement and lay-out of West Lake in Hangzhou, and absorbed designs and styles of gardens in South of Yangtze River. Because of the enormous scope and irreplaceable significance, the Summer Palace was regarded the museum of imperial gardens. Before the Qianlong Kingdom, there are four big imperial gardens in the western suburb area of Beijing. However, they were not connected to each other and there was a lake called “Wengshan Lake” between them. In 1750 of Qing Dynasty, Emperor Qianlong made use of the Wengshan Lake and combines the four gardens into a larger one, named “Qingyi Garden”, which was the predecessor of the Summer Palace.
