Bngldeshi Popular Writer Film Director Humayun Ahmed Died New York Hospital

Famous Bangladeshi author, dramatist and film director Humayun Ahmed, 64, has died in a New York hospital after a nine-month battle against cancer.

DR Abdul Momen, the Bangladesh ambassador to the UN, told press that he had breathed his last at 11:30pm Thursday Bangladesh time.

Wife Meher Afroz Shaon, younger brother Mohammad Zafar Iqbal and publisher Mazharul Islam were at the Bellevue Hospital at the time of death.

Humayun Ahmed emerged in the Bengali literary world in the early 1970s and over the subsequent decade became the most popular fiction writer of the country. As a writer, Ahmed often displays a fascination for creating stories around supernatural events; his style is characterized as magic realism.

নিউইয়র্ক: জনপ্রিয় ঔপন্যাসিক হুমায়ূন আহমেদ মারা গেছেন। ক্যান্সার নিয়ে দীর্ঘদিন চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের একটি হাসপাতালে মৃত্যু হয়েছে তার।

জাতিসংঘের নিযুক্ত বাংলাদেশের স্থায়ী রাষ্ট্রদূত ড. আবদুল মোমেন বাংলানিউজকে বলেন, নিউইয়র্ক সময় বৃহস্পতিবার দুপুর ১টা ২০ মিনিটে (বাংলাদেশ সময় বৃহস্পতিবার রাত ১১টা ২০ মিনিট) বেলভিউ হাসপাতালে চিকিৎসাধীন হুমায়ূন আহমেদের মৃত্যু হয়েছে। লেখকের পারিবারিক সূত্রও বাংলানিউজকে মৃত্যুর বিষয়টি নিশ্চিত করেছে।

মৃত্যুকালে বাংলা সাহিত্যের জনপ্রিয় এই লেখকের বয়স হয়েছিল ৬৪ বছর।

হুমায়ূন আহমেদের মৃত্যুর খবরে নিউইয়র্ক, বাংলাদেশে শোকের ছায়া নেমে এসেছে। বিএনপির চেয়ারপারসন খালেদা জিয়া জনপ্রিয় লেখকের মৃত্যুতে শোক প্রকাশ করেছেন।

অন্ত্রে ক্যান্সার ধরা পড়ার পর গত বছরের সেপ্টেম্বরে চিকিৎসার জন্য নিউইয়র্কে উন্নত চিকিৎসার জন্য ভর্তি হন হুমায়ূন আহমেদ।

এরপর দুই পর্বে মোট ১২টি কেমোথেরাপি নেওয়ার পর গত মাসে বেলভ্যু হাসপাতালের অনকোলজি বিভাগের প্রধান ডা. জেইন এবং ক্যান্সার সার্জন জজ মিলারের নেতৃত্বে হুমায়ূন আহমেদের দেহে অস্ত্রোপচার হয়।

হুমায়ূন আহমেদের জন্ম ১৩ নভেম্বর, ১৯৪৮। তিনি একাধারে ঔপন্যাসিক, ছোটগল্পকার ও নাট্যকার।

Today Is the 4oth Independence Day of Bangladesh

Bangladesh muktijuddhas (freedom fighters) raising a flag

in honour of newly-independent Bangladesh

Today Gonoprojatontri Bangladesh (the People's Republic of Bangladesh) observes its 4oth independence day. In the early morning of March 26, 1971, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh before his arrest by the West Pakistani soldiers who had already started crackdown on the East Pakistanis (people of Bangladesh) before midnight of March 25. The birth pang of Bangladesh was in the form of the Bangladesh War of Independence that lasted for nine months. During this time, West Pakistani soldiers and their local collaborators killed three million East Pakistanis, raped three hundred thousand girls and women and made 10 million people leave their homes and take refuge in neighbouring India. Bangladesh muktijuddhas, trained by India, were engaged in guerrilla warfare with the West Pakistani soldiers and ultimately with the assistance of the Indian army liberated the country. On December 16, 1971, Bangladesh emerged as the newly independent nation.

The Real Independence Is Proven in Actions, Not in Words

A lot of water has passed through the rivers of Bangladesh, a lot of events took place in the country -- some are totally condemnable, some tolerable, others laudatory. In its 40 years of life, Bangladesh is now passing through its middle age. It's time to deeply reflect on the achievements and failures of this country that had gained its independence after profound sacrifices and pains of its entire population in 1971.

Being Bangladeshis, we must reflect on the following and prove the real independence in actions and not in words alone.

Are the fruits of independence being enjoyed by all Bangladeshis irrespective of religion, ethnicity and socio-economic-political status in the society?
How much freedom (personal freedom, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of the media including the press, freedom from encroachment of others, freedom from poverty) is being enjoyed by the people of Bangladesh?
How much discrimination is being faced by religious and ethnic minority groups in the country? What is really being done to reduce this discrimination?
Aren't indiscriminate and unnecessary hartals (general strikes), picketing and vandalism an encroachment on the rights and livelihood of other people?
Independence is supposed to provide opportunities to formation of political leadership in the country. In reality, same old leadership is holding on to the power in rotation depriving the formation, mentoring and maturity of new leadership. This huge gap is dangerous for the country.
How much has been done to look after the real muktijuddhas (freedom fighters) and birongonas (girls and women who had been raped during the Bangladesh War of Independence)?
Do our people know the real causes of and events that led to the Bangladesh War of Independence? Are our school, college and university textbooks portraying the true history of Bangladesh?
Forty years have already passed, but how much has been achieved in giving exemplary punishment to the war criminals who were engaged in crimes against humanity in 1971?

The SSC examination of 2011 was start in the month on 1 february 2011 under secondery and higher secondery education doard . At the first day six thousands five hundreds eighty three students ware absent and twenty three students expaled. We regret to inform you that, because of a computer programming error, the results of the 2012 Diversity Lottery that were previously posted on the Department of State Entrant Status Check website have been voided. The results were not valid because they did not represent a fair, random selection of entrants, as required by U.S. law. They were posted in error.

If you checked the Entrant Status Check website (http://www.dvlottery.state.gov) during the first week in May and found a notice that you had been selected for further processing or a notice that you had not been selected, that notice has been rescinded and is no longer valid.

A new selection process will be conducted based on the original entries for the 2012 program.

You submitted a qualified entry between October 5, 2010 and November 3, 2010. Your entry remains with us and will be included in the new selection lottery. Your confirmation number to check results on the Entrant Status Check website is still valid.

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:

Q: Why was it necessary to invalidate the names that were selected?

U.S. law requires that Diversity Immigrant visas be made available through a strictly random process. A computer programming error resulted in a selection that was not truly random.
Since the computer programming error caused an outcome that was not random, the outcome did not meet the requirements of the law, and would have been unfair to many DV entrants.

Q: Is the 2012 Diversity Visa Program cancelled?

No. The 2012 program will continue. The computer programming error has been identified and corrected. The Department of State will run a new selection using all the qualified entries submitted for the 2012 program (received between October 5, 2010 and November 3, 2010).

Q: Do I have to submit a new application?

No. You may not submit a new application. We will use all qualified entries received during the October 5 to November 3, 2010 registration period.

Q: Will you open a new entry period?

No. New entries will not be accepted.

Q: I checked the Entry Status Check website after May 1 and it said I had been selected. Can I apply for a DV visa?

Unfortunately, results previously posted on this website are not valid because the selection process was not fair or random. We will take the entries of all individuals who sent in their registration during the original October 5 to November 3, 2010 time period and run a new lottery. We regret any inconvenience or disappointment this has caused.

Q: How can I check the results of the new selection?

The new results should be available on this website on or about July 15, 2011. The confirmation code you received when you registered is still valid for use on the website.

Q: Was the Department of State hacked? Was my personal information at risk?

We have no evidence that this problem was caused by any intentional act. No unauthorized party accessed data related to the DV program.
This appears to be solely the result of a computer programming error.

Q: You said the Department of State would not contact DV entrants by e-mail. Why are you sending this one now?

Because of the computer error, we decided it was important to notify every person who might have seen incorrect information on the website. An e-mail was the fastest way to reach DV entrants.
Winners in the new selection process will not be notified by e-mail. The results of the new selection process will only be available on the Entrant Status Check website (http://www.dvlottery.state.gov) on or about July 15, 2011.

Q: I thought I was selected, and I sent application forms to the Kentucky Consular Center. What should I do now?

Those forms will not be processed by the Kentucky Consular Center, because they were submitted in connection with the lottery result that was voided. We cannot reimburse you for any costs, such as postage, that you may have paid to send these forms to the Kentucky Consular Center. You should check the Entrant Status Check website on or about July 15 to see if you are selected in the repeated lottery selection process. If you are selected again, we ask that you simply follow the instructions given in the notification letter, including the step of mailing your completed application forms to the Kentucky Consular Center, once again.

Q: I thought I was selected. I am in the United State and contacted US Citizenship and Immigration Services about adjustment of status. What should I do now?

USCIS will not process any adjustment of status cases based on the voided DV selection process. If you already paid the $440 DV fee to the USBank lockbox based on your belief that you had been selected, you may request a refund from KCC through the following mailing address:

Cox's Bazar:
Cox"s Bazar is a town, a fishing port and district headquarters in Bangladesh. It is known for its wide sandy beach which is the world's longest natural sandy sea beach.It is an unbroken 125 km sandy sea beach with a gentle slope. It is located 150 km south of Chittagong. Cox’s Bazar is also known by the name "Panowa", the literal translation of which means "yellow flower". Its other old name was "Palongkee". The modern Cox's Bazar derives its name from Captain Cox (died 1799), an officer serving in British India. In the 18th century, an officer of British East India Company, Captain Hiram Cox was appointed as the Superintendent of Palongkee outpost after Warren Hastings became the Governor of Bengal. Captain Cox was specially mobilised to deal with a century long conflict between Arakan refugees and local Rakhains. The Captain was a compassionate soul and the plight of the people touched his heart. He embarked upon the mammoth task of rehabilitating refugees in the area, and made significant progress. A premature death took Captain Cox in 1799 before he could finish his work. But the work he had done earned him a place in the hearts of the locals and to commemorate his role in rehabilitation work a market was established and named after him as Cox's Bazaar ("Cox's Market"). Although Cox's Bazar is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Bangladesh, it has yet to become a major international tourist destination, due to lack of publicity.

Other tourist attractions near Cox's Bazar:

Maheshkhali: Maheshkhali is a small island (268 square kilometres) off the Cox’s Bazar coast. The island offers panoramic scenic beauty and is covered by a range of low hills, about 300 feet (91 m) high, streatches through the center of the island and along its eastern coastline. The coasts of the island on the west and north form a low-lying tract that is fringed by the mangrove forests.Adinath Temple, a temple of Shiva, and a Buddhist pagoda are also located on this island.

Sonadia Island: Sonadia Island, a small crescent shaped island of only 9 square kilometres, it is 7-km north-west of Cox's Bazar. The western side of the island is sandy and different kinds of shells are found on the beach. Off the northern part of the island, there are beds of window pane oysters. During winter, fisherman set up temporary camps on the island and dry their catches of sea fish. Sonadia Island supports the last remaining part of mangrove forest in southeast Bangladesh. Sonadia's mangroves are distinct from the well-known sunderbans, due to their development in a coastal lagoon setting rather than in a delta. Another attraction of this island is the sight of game birds migrating here in great numbers during the winter seasons.

Teknaf:
Teknaf a place situated by the side of Naf river is the southernmost part of mainland Bangladesh. This also marks the end point of Cox's Bazar beach. Tourists usually come here to have a river cruise along beautiful Naf river, which flows between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

St. Martin's Island: St. Martin's Island a small island in the northeast part of the Bay of Bengal, about 9 km south of the tip of the Cox's Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. It is the only coral island in Bangladesh. It is about 8 km west of the northwest coast of Myanmar at the mouth of the Naf River. The local name of the island is "Narical Gingira", also spelled "Narikel Janjina/Jinjera", translated from Bangla, meaning 'Coconut Island'. St. Martin's Island has become a popular tourist spot. Three shipping liners run daily trips to the island. They are Kutubdia, Sea-Truck and Keary-Sindbad. Tourists can book their trip either from Chittagong or from Cox's Bazar. The surrounding coral reef of the island has an extension named Chera Dwip. The island is home to several endangered species of turtles, as well as the corals, some of which are found only on this island.

Bandarban: Bandarban lies three hours away from Cox's Bazaar by bus. The Buddha Dhatu Jadi, the largest Buddhist temple in Bangladesh, located in Balaghata, 4 km from the town, is an excellent place to visit. This Theravada Buddhist temple is made completely in the style of South-East Asia and houses the second largest statue of Buddha in Bangladesh. The waterfall named Shoilo Propat at Milanchari is also an excellent site. In addition, the numerous Buddhist temples, known as kyang in local tongue, and vihars in the town include the highly notable the Rajvihar (royal vihar) at Jadipara and the Ujanipara Vihar.

Rangamati: Rangamati One can reach Rangamati from Cox's Bazar either via Chittagong or Bandarban. Rangamati offers several attractions including local tribal museum, Buddhist temple, tribal markets, hanging bridge and even the palace of traibal kings. The major attraction of the district is Kaptai Lake. It is a man-made lake in the Kaptai upazila of Rangamati District. The lake was created as a result of building the Kaptai Dam on the Karnaphuli River, as part of the Karnaphuli Hydro-electric project. The beautiful view of surrounding green hills has turned the lake into a wonderful spot for boating and cruising.

The government of Bangladesh has recently provided an updated Ramsar Information Sheet on its Sundarbans Ramsar site, first designated for the Ramsar List in May 1992, enlarging its area from 596,000 to 601,700 hectares. Now to be called "Sundarbans Reserved Forest", this Ramsar and World Heritage site is one of the most important mangrove forests in the world and has been significantly threatened from a number of directions for many years. The nearby Sundarbans mangrove forest across the border in India is not yet a Ramsar site but it is hoped that it will be soon. Ramsar's Liazzat Rabbiosi has distilled from the new RIS a brief summary of the site's main ecological and cultural features, and that's available, with photographs, right here. The Sundarbans Reserved Forest ('the Beautiful Forest') is located between 21°27' and 22°30'N, 89°02' and 90°00'E at the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers, which together with the innumerable small channels and creeks flowing into the Bay of Bengal dissect the whole area creating the largest contiguous mangrove forest in the world. The site is a hotspot of rich flora and fauna, home to a number of unique and globally or nationally endangered species of plants like rare Sundri (Heritiera fomes), Gewa (Excoecaria agallocha), Passur (Xylocarpus mekongensis), animals like endangered Royal Bengal Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), vulnerable Pallas Fishing Eagle (Haliaeetus leucoryphus) and Masked Finfoot (Heliopais personata), and critically endangered River Terrapin (Batagur baska), all listed in the IUCN Red Book, rare species of shark (Glephys gangeticus) and very rich avifauna with 315 species of which 84 are migratory. At this transitional zone between freshwater supplied by rivers and saline water pushed by high tides from open sea, many fish species such as Penaeus monodon, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, Lates calcarif, Metapeneaus monoceros and Pangaisus pangaisus depend for spawning and juvenile feeding on the Sundarbans aquatic habitat. The wetland is remarkable for protection from the tidal surge generated from the cyclonic depression in the Bay of Bengal. About one third of the total area is used as protected area for the conservation of biological diversity. In addition, the abundant fish and biomass resources (namely timber, fuelwood, pulpwood, leaves, shells, crabs, honey and fish) are harvested by local communities. There is a shipping route through the Sundarbans. The area's religious and cultural importance is reflected in a religious festival once a year which attracts local Hindu devotees and in the venerable ruined Hindu temple of Sheikh at Shekher Tek. The reduction in fresh water flow due to water diversion, the construction of dykes combined with the pollution of the industries and the ports of Khulna and Mongla have tremendously affected the plant and fish population of Sundarbans. The site is notable for the long history of scientific management with protected areas established along the southern periphery of this mangrove wetland. There are eight field stations that provide data for a number of ongoing studies and researches. Recently an information and education center was established at Khulna and a new Integrated Sundarbans management plan is under preparation under the Sundarbans Biodiversity Conservation Project funded by Asian Development Bank.
