No. 17 - Pay it Forwards

{as Blogged here - but i thought it might be time to start catching up with this blog.......}

At the beginning of the year I decided to take part in the Pay It Forwards my friend Lizzie put on her FB status and I had replies from Helen, Helen and Rach on the blog and Sam and Lisa on twitter. Sam moved into a new house in January and I made her a little something then and its been a long time coming but I finally got my act together and got the rest of my Pay It Forwards gifts in the post this week. Hopefully they should have arrived with their recipients by now {if not then it might not be a surprise any more, oooops}. I also popped a package over to Lizzie last weekend, just because I thought she might like it too.

I decided that I was going to put a little package together of some things I thought might be fun to receive rather than sending just one thing. Plus, this way it gave me an excuse to try out some bits I had seen and couldn’t see a reason to make otherwise.

So this is what each recipient got;

*I saw some super cute doorstops in a shop in Bath and though – Hmmmmm, with this new sewing machine of mine I can easily make those. So I did. Not quite as professionally as the shop. But I bought some grosgrain and some stick on Velcro, and using some samples and ends of material I had I crafted some doorstops.

I made them by turning the fabric right side in, and sewed a band at the top, wider than the Velcro is. I then sewed the edges of the bag together. Then to make them stand up I created a flat bottom. I am not sure what that is called but you can see what to do here. I then sewed on the grosgrain as a little handle and covered where this was with the stick on Velcro. Voila. Done.

They have been delivered flat, but once filled with some rice or gravel they work a treat. As they were made from samples and ends, the one above is just one of the designs I made.

* I also made some cute little button earrings from some pairs of matching buttons I had. Again, all the gifts are different as I didn’t have more than one set of matching button. I finished them off by packaging them up on one of my classic moo cards.

*Next I bottled some ‘homemade vanilla into some 100ml plastic bottles. I made some rum vanilla extract earlier in the year, but it hasn’t been quite the vanilla success I had hoped so I’ll be keeping it for me. So I had to make some afresh with a vodka batch for the Pay It Forwards. It wasn’t started quite early enough for the recipients {I didn’t check the rum one early enough} to be able to use right away, but in a couple of months it’ll be perfect. And as the vanilla matures and gets used, it can be topped up with more vodka and vanilla and left to infuse again.

*And I also added a recipe card with a recipe for my favourite banana bread recipe on it. The recipe cards are postcards I had printed from moo. As one side is a shiny postcard I had to buy a new super fine marker to write on them.

Everything was then packaged up in some tissue, tied with bakers twine and then tagged with, you guessed it, more cards from Moo, this time some ‘Handmade with Love’ cards that are made from their free business cards offer {Google it if you fancy some}, with the bit that tells you it’s a free card craft knifed off and the corners rounded {and because I cut the free bits off, I have a stack of 15% off at Moo.com codes – if you want one, leave me a message and I’ll send you a code}.

Each package is a bit of a lottery as all the bags and earrings are different and I wrapped them, sealed the envelopes and then stuck on the address labels, so I am not sure who received what but I hope they like the package they get.

No.8 365 - A year in photo

I did it. I made another Blurb book - this time of my 2010 Shuttercal 365. It's been cool to look back on the year and make some sort of record of it. I know the Shuttercal does the whole recording the year thing, but this is like a wrap up of 2010.
Each month has a DPS consisting of the months Shuttercal and a shot from that month, and then there are 14 pages in the middle which are taken up with shots from the year, not in much order, but ones I liked.

I used the Bookify web programme as I cant download Booksmart {thanks to my antivirus not switching off}, but it worked pretty well, and although you don't have as much control or page layouts as with Booksmart, I think that it's done the job pretty well {and to be honest, it probably made the process about 100% quicker as I couldn't faff as much}.
With regards to the size and style - I went with the small square book with 40 pages, partly because the images of the month calendars I got from the Shuttercal pages weren't very big, and would be pixelated on a bigger page, and also partly because of cost! I have the book on order now so I'll be sure to post when I get it back in the flesh, so to speak.
If your thinking about making a book, Astrid at Hei Astrid has some great tips on making Blurb books {she is a Blurb book aficionado}. I second her suggestions to keep your photo libraries organised - this is the first year that I have organised my images as the year has gone on, and it has made it super simple to find my pics for this project. And, I like her like Blurb - its a simple site to use and having used a couple of other sites in the past, I think their printing is of a higher quality. I cant wait to get the book now.

Cushions - How to.

At the request of Nic's Notebook I have put together a little 'How-To' about the cushions I made. I am new to this sewing game so I'm not very technical I'm afraid.
I also didn't take any pictures whilst I was going along, so I hope it makes sense.

Once the cushion inner {IKEA Granat} had been bought I laid out the fabric on a flat surface and marked round the cushion with pins to get an idea of how big it was {if you put them side by side, the ones I made aren't quite the same size because of this. Maybe I should have used a tape measure? }
I cut out one piece of fabric the size of the cushion for the front of the cushion.
I cut another piece of fabric the same width as the cushion, but made sure it was about 8 inchs longer than the cushion was in length. This piece of fabric was then cut in half to make the back of the cushion.
These two pieces of back will eventually overlap so I folded one of the raw edges on either piece over {it was actually the edges I had just cut when I cut the longer piece in half.} and sewed it to form a neat edge.
The I pinned the right sides of the fabric together, so it was now wrong side out. I made sure the two back pieces I had just sewed overlapped by a couple of inches, trying to make sure that the outside of the flaps was about in the middle of the cushion. Because the flaps at the back are overlapping and were the same size, one of them hung over the edge of the seam a long way. The other fitted about right.
Now I sewed all the way round the cushion to form a square.
Once the edges were sewed - I trimmed the edges close to the seams so that the corners looked better and turned it the right way round.
There you go - cushions.

In case you missed the post on my main blog in which I tell you just how spoilt I was for my birthday - I got a bright pink sewing machine from the girls. I love it.
The bright pink sewing machine was threaded up on monday night, and last night {after a trip to Ikea to get parts of a friends birthday gift, where I also picked up cushion inners} I finally put it to work to make the cushions we have been wanting for our front room. I'd seen and consequentially bought the most amazing fabric in Ish on Sharrowvale Rd in Sheffield, after we'd decided that the room needed some colour {it has been a mix of beige and brown for a long time now} and I think, now they are done they're just what we needed. That beige sofa and beige throw are pretty plain.

I haven't quite ventured into putting zips on the cushions, as I have heard from a very adept sewing friend, that they're quite hard to do, but I am pretty happy with how they have turned out. I mean, how wrong could I go sewing squares.

Lets see how I get on when I am trying to make something a little more adventurous.......

30 things before I am 31.

As today is the day - the Big 3-0 - I thought maybe it's time for a new list.
There were a few items I didn't quite get round to on the last list but that I would still quite like to do, so I'm carrying them over. I think I'm allowed. After all it's my list.

I am going with the making and doing and changing side of things rather than things that might need me to spend a lot of cash to achieve them. I don't have that 'lot of cash' and I cant see anything bar a lottery win changing that in the next year!

So, the 30 things I aim to do before I'm 31 are;

Make macaroons.
Make new cushions for the flat. Something that says 'me' in the room – there isn’t much around the flat that is me or mine. It's very much my housemates space. And I have seen some gorgeous Orla Keirly-esque fabric too!
Run 5k. Not necessarily in a race, but all at once. Preferably without my lungs collapsing.
Become more self reliant. I have let myself rely on people this year and it's only lead to me being let down. If I rely on myself more I’ll only have myself to blame when I’m let down, right……
~~Make an item of clothing from a pattern, from scratch. {Clearly, I won’t be making the fabric, but you get the idea right?}~~
Read a book a month and and document it here.
Take a TTV picture or two. This was on the list last year but I failed. I have the camera now, thanks to Lizzy, but I need to mod it and make it work for ttv.
~~Making a Blurb book out of my 2010 Shuttercal.~~
And whilst I am at it - carrying on my Shuttercal 365 for 2011. I like having a documentation of the year.
Learn one new recipe a month. Be it soup, cake, a proper dinner or a snacky snack.
Take a class. I fancy letter pressing. Or a language. Or maybe the silk scarf class @vogue_ismybible saw and thinks we should attend.
Go to more gigs.
Vent less - I read a quote a while ago, that I can't quite remember totally, but it said something like '50% of people don’t care about your problems and the other 50% only care because it makes them feel better about their problems'. It made me think - they’re my issues. I should keep them that way. Especially around the people I have a feeling fall into that later 50%.
Sort out my finances.
Get a tattoo – this was on last years list, but since it took me a whole 27 years to decide my first one, a year to decide the next one might be a bit much. {this might be on lists for a while……..}
~~Host a dinner party {and not serve Fajita’s or soup!}~~
~~Take part in some Blogger events - I've really enjoyed the ones I did in 2010 - Pin it Forwards, the Souvenir Foto School classes and the August Break.~~

Go to the bit of the A625 that has collapsed. No idea why but I have a feeling it’ll be a little ‘end of the world’ like.
Get my knees on the way to being sorted.
Swim. I love swimming and I don’t do it enough.
To get back to the weight I got to pre-glasto. Before I gave up on the health kick and put the weight back on. Grrrrrrrr. I think I’d quite like to lose a stone, maybe one and a half of them. Two would be a dream.
Make frozen yogurt. I love ‘fro-yo’ but Leeds seems to be all out of good places to buy it.
Crochet something other than a beanie. Not that beanies aren’t useful, but I’d like to expand my skills.

Things I learnt

I think it’s about time to look back on the list. There are some things I have learnt about myself with this first attempt at a list;

The simple things are the ones that might just slip you by. They are the ones I thought i might be able to pick up later and I clearly haven't done. Like making a font. I am sure in the new two weeks I can make one, but it's about the easiest one on the list!
And I have failed at list items that were money driven. I couldn't own a fancy handbag - i don't have the money to buy a fancy handbag. But I did buy myself a nice everyday bag, and my mum bought me a lovely holiday bag, and maybe I am not a fancy bag person....I would like to be, but since I can't be, I am pretty happy to put this goal to bed!
Nor do I have the cash to buy a bike to ride more. I tried to ride my dad's but its too big and the one he offered me didn't have gears so it would have been useless in Leeds, but not riding a bike seems to be doing me ok so far!
And I had neither the money OR holidays left at work for a real road trip - but the boy and I did take a lot of little trips. We drove ourselves round the Algarve. We took fancy routes to friends houses for the weekend. We made little trips that counted.
I’ve not got me that tattoo I want either – not through lack of trying. I've had two appointments lined up, but I just don’t know what to get. It took me a good 10 years to decide the last one, I’m not sure this one can be decided yet…..
And this whole cooking a meal a month for the boy – well, it might have worked, but he isn’t very good at letting me in the kitchen unless I’m baking and still then he tries to have his say…….
I also wanted to see Katie and Liz more. And I have seen them this year, but definitely not as much as I’d have liked. But I have some more visits lined up with them for 2011.

I know I have a couple of weeks left to complete the list, but I can't see myself getting a bike, taking a road trip or buying a fancy bag or some of those other bits - so, I think I'm just going to abandon those goals. But you know, as I've said before - it's been nice to have the list and it's definitely something that I want to carry on.

No. 25 - Keep a plant alive for over 6 months

In May I bought an Orchid. I didn't brag about it.
I thought better of announcing that I was going for this one. I am too used to killing plants. And a couple of months ago I thought I had failed. The flowers started dropping off. In numbers they started falling, until there were just two left.
So I googled it, and it turns out it's normal. That's what they do.
And recently I noticed that there are new little red nibs forming on the stumps of old flowers.

I guess I might be able to cross this one off the list......

My party invites arrived from Moo. {You can tell this is an easier list item to do can't you.}

I love them.

I created the images for the from and back in photoshop using the size guide templates on Moo. {I am not very talented in photoshop, but I can do enough to get me through a day, so it's ok for me} I then uploaded them to the site as a front and back image. It's super easy to do.

Once they arrived I rounded the corners to make them look more like a liftpass, popped a hole in the top and used a little bakers twine to finish them off.

I also bought some Glassine envelopes {from Ebay} and made some super cute stickers {also on Moo, as they were on offer} to complete the look;

I love them. Even if I do say so myself.

Now I just have to work on creating a suitably tacky space.

My Cocodot liftpass styleeee invite

So, I appear to be REALLY running out of time fast on this list.

I might just try and set aside a couple of weekends to make sure that I get through this list. I am not good at failing things of my own creation.

But one of the points I am cracking on with is the party. That’s a super easy and fun point to get started on.

I don’t think that it will spoil anything {as the invite is there for all to see} to let you know that I am planning a après-ski themed affair {and if you are invited, you will already know anyway}. It took a while to decide if I wanted a theme, but well, I love a good bit of Apres Ski time and we thought it would be silly not to run with a theme that can be as widely interpreted as this one!

But just a little warning - It will be suitably tacky.

The invites went out this week – I sent them through Cocodot. You can not imagine how much I love this site. I send so many cards through it these days, and the invite service allows me to email people AND post the invite to their facebook walls. It also means that I can see who has opened the e-vite and keep a track of the guest list. {Yes, I know it WOULD be easier to set up a facebook group and all that jazz, but I really WANTED to use the cocodot system.}

There will also be some actual invites going out to some people. These haven’t come back from being printed yet though, or been modified, so you can not see them I’m afraid.

Now I just need to find myself something suitably tacky, neony and ski-suity to wear.

So, month 9 of 2010 is over {wtf? where did the year go?} and I still have so much left to complete on my list - and the weekends are filling up - I need to start doing things that don't just revolve around keeping my housemate company in the week! She will be off travelling soon so I need to stop and make sure I am doing things for me!

But September was the weddings of Rich&Karen and Jane&Mark, and a week in Portugal, and the A-Z souvenir foto school and the boy being ill. And, very importantly - it was the month that Lizzie had her beautiful baby boy - Brody!

I stumbled across 3 120films that had been languishing in a drawer for some time, so I made the trip across town to Snappy Snaps and got them developed.
I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo slack though - some of these shots are from LAST summer. Yes, that's right, summer 2009.

Living by Lists

Years ago I lived by a list that was taped to the inside of my wardrobe door, behind the scarves that hung there, hidden from anyone who came round. Hidden from anyone but me.

I used to check it almost daily to make sure I had done everything I needed to. The list had important items on it that made my life a thousand times easier, such as;

Make sure there is milk and bread at all times.
Make sure there are clean socks for the ex.
Make sure his shirts are washed.
Make sure you take the bin out before he knows it is full.
Check for lunch foods. & Fizzy pop. There must be cans of coke.
Have you done the washing up?

The list was longer than this, but I have forgot some of the terribly important points on it. But if I missed some of these items then I got the silent treatment, or there was shouting, or sometimes, things, like pots, got thrown. If we didn’t have bread from sandwiches, or milk for cereal, or cans of drink then the day started badly. When socks hadn’t quite dried yet from the last nights washing I have memories of hair drying them on the sly so that I didn’t the brunt of his anger. If there were no clean shirts. Well. There never were no clean shirts. No clean socks caused so much trouble I didn’t dare.

I kept to this list religiously.

For the last year and a bit in the house I just moved from we had cleaning lists. The cleaning list that caused such upsets - it was rarely adhered to. And when it was followed, it wasn’t followed by all the residents – I mean, since when do the stairs need hoovering EVERY week?

For my first few months in that house, Sam and I got in trouble regularly for neglecting the hoovering of the stairs. We cleaned the important places, like the kitchen and bathroom. But the stairs……… After Sam moved out and I didn’t have someone to get in trouble with, I tried harder, and other people took over the neglecting of the cleaning o the stairs mantle. But the cleaning rota appeared without fail and occasionally a note was left for the people who had cleaned least.

Now, I am trying to live by a more fun list. This list.

But I have to say, I have been neglecting it somewhat – I am now under 6months from my 30^th {GULP} and there seems to be quite a lot left on this list to be completed.

I keep looking at it in relation to what I have planned, and how I can steer what I am doing towards the list.

Going forwards there is a new point to the list;

NO.0 - make a concerted effort to try and ‘do’ more of the things on this fun list.

The boy started my panic in my decidedly uncompleted list by pointed out to me that I owe him 3 meals. That is 3 months whereby I haven’t cooked him anything. {No, that is a lie, I made him a bacon sandwich last weekend. Admittedly, he made me tapas, and paella and chicken kebabs this weekend, but who’s counting right?}

So;

No. 16 - This morning I dropped off 3 120mm films at snappy snaps to get developed. I know at least one of these films is from last summer. Maybe all of them are.

No. 13 - The bank holiday weekend will be spent on the boat.

No. 19 – Fingers crossed a London & Lizzie trip are on the cards soon. If we can make that happen it’ll be 2 get togethers in about 3½ months, which for us, will be an impressive feat! And I saw Katie at Glasto......

No. 7 Shaping up

At some point in 2009 I started to expand.

It was nothing unusual – I have a history of ricocheting between sizes – it doesn’t make me happy when I get bigger, it makes me pretty miserable if I am honest, but I know that it will happen.

I began to notice it when my skinny Baxter’s started to fit tighter and tighter, until my blue ones no longer looked acceptable and the black ones gave me the dreaded muffin top.

It got so bad, I did something I haven’t done before and just thought ‘screw it’ and bought the next size up. I though this time maybe I had expanded to stay……..

But I have some good news people – those bigger sized jeans are TOO big now. And the black ones, the ones with the muffin tops, I realised today those muffin tops aren’t there anymore.

You have no idea how happy this makes me.

All those days of dressing-less salads for lunch and dinner. Of annoying the boy with ‘is it healthy?’ questions when he cooks for me. Of not drinking those empty booze calories in the week. Of avoiding random midweek meals out. Of 6am runs. They have started to work.

Don’t get me wrong. I am nowhere near my university days of thin-ness, and I am pretty sure I will never reach that size again {and to be honest, I kind of looked a bit ill when I was at my smallest} but it gives me hope that when I am sat by the pool with the boys family in September, I won’t feel awful.

Now, I just have to keep up with all this good work………

No. 5. Live on my own.

So I won’t quite be achieving this on this year BUT I am moving out of the ‘house of death’ as one former resident calls it and into a lovely little pad with my friend Sarah.

We both realised living alone in Leeds could be pretty pricey, and to be honest I am not that great at being on my own all the time {trust me – I am no good at not talking - I’d end up chatting to myself way too much to still think I was sane!} so we decided to get me out of the house, and her out of her super expensive flat and into a shared place.

As crazy as it might sound to those in the know about my housemates - I am actually going to miss them. I won't miss the mess and the random people they bring home at 4 in the morning or the rudies noises that permeate through the ceiling, but, if nothing else, they keep me {and my work mates} amused with their antics.....

But I am very excited about the new place - we have less than a month before we'll be in there, and i'll have a new space to make my own again.

No. 26 - Take a road trip with Jim

So I have had to adapt this one slightly as I am fast running out of holiday days from work and there are things popping up left right and centre that are eating into them……{and my cash}

Earlier this year the boy found out he is being sent to India to work. He’s off out there in August for a couple of weeks, and maybe again in October for a few months, so the plan was for me to go out for the end of his October trip, and us take a little journey to a few places, but ridiculous the costs of the flights, and my dwindling holidays put paid to that plan.

However we did book some flights over the weekend and we are planning a little road trip for ourselves in September. His sister is getting married at the end of September on the Algarve in Portugal, so instead of us going for a short 3 day break we have booked flights Wednesday – Wednesday, and a car, but not accommodation, so either side of the wedding we can have a little explore of the towns and cities on the coast there.

And the place they are getting married looks absolutely beautiful – it’s a little resort called Olhos de Agua, and the choices for the ceremony all look out on the sea. It’s going to be stunning.

This weekend, what with the being sick and generally not wanting to do a lot, I thought it would be the perfect time to create this blurb book I have been thinking about for a while as a little holiday memory book - It annoys me that I don't have things readily available to print so much any more.

In an attempt to kickstart me getting back into Yoga I am going to be taking the Bohemian Babe course over at Pop Fizz.

I haven't done a e-course before but the course sounds perfect to fit in with my getting fit for Glastonbury aim too {which has taken a little hit this week as I have been trying to shake some hideous cold that just wont seem to leave me}. The course will give me 3 yoga classes a week, and nutritional advice and finishes on summer solstice, 2 days before we leave for the festival.

I shall let you know how I get on. I have to say I am really looking forwards it.

P.s. Have you seen Pop Fizz before? I hadn't but Rhian of Rhian Caroline introduced me to Nicole's blog last month, and i have been reading back and forwards since.

April was night's out. Trips to Manchester. Bit of nature.

4 months down.

I'd like to take more interesting pics next month. That is the plan. Although, it's a cheap month I am planning to have so maybe it might be hard to do?

Have you seen the Glastonbury line-up?

Some of it got announced yesterday - loads of people are complaining about it, but I'm pretty excited about it.

And I am pretty sure that it's going to be really easy for Sam and I to see 10 bands we've never heard of - just as long as it's not on Friday - every band I want to see is playing Friday, and all at the same time. What are they playing at?

no 7. Shaping up

So, I went for run no.2 last night.

I now have another couple of shaping up goals to aim for after Glastonbury now so I have to get this exercise thing moving;

The boys' sister is getting married, abroad, in September.
And he is off to work in India for about 6 weeks in October. Which means a weeks holiday, hopefully in Kerala, for me at the end of it.

Both of which will require me to wear nice clothes. And little dresses. My little dresses, that I love so much, don't really fit all that well right now.

Right onto the run;

The lungs still felt like they wanted to escape.
The knees started to hurt a little {but with their issues, that's was to be expected}

But I made it a little bit further this time before I walked. The housemate kept telling me just a little further, just a little further, and it worked. And we went one road further before turning home. It did mean finishing the run on a long slope though.

We've set a 5k challenge for me in 8 weeks time, which I guess would be just before Glasto - which might work out just perfect. I don't want to be huffing and puffing my way through those fields again.

But I thought exercise was meant to make you healthier - I seem to have acquired a non-smoker's smoker's cough. Why is that people? Why?
